PRESENTATIONIn the year of the centenary of the Catalan Hiking Federation (FEEC), it gives us great pleasure to invite you to discover some of the most beautiful corners of southern Catalonia.

Between 3 and 10 May 2020 we will be holding the second Catalonia Trek Festival, an event where you can get to know the finest landscapes of the Costa Daurada and the Terres de l’Ebre, the two tourism brands of the counties of Tarragona. This is an area of extraordinary natural beauty, where the mountains virtually spill down into the Mediterranean, and where human and cultural influences go back to the times of the Roman Empire.

We are looking forward to showing you some of the most spectacular locations in the mountains of Tarragona: from the Sierra de Montsant to the Prades Mountains, travelling along the hiking trails that run alongside the sea on the European E12 long-distance trail. We’re also keen to show you such iconic spots as Siurana, one of the most beautiful villages in Catalonia; the historic trails among the ancient vineyards in the Priorat region, where some of the finest wines in the world are produced; and an excursion into the mountains of Tivissa, where the first hiking trail on the Iberian Peninsula was marked out and where we will follow part of the E4 and E7 long-distance paths.

The discovery of this region on foot is a fundamental part of the Catalonia Trek Festival, but it is not the only one. We should not overlook the wonderful cultural attractions of the regions we will be visiting. From ancient Roman Tarraco, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to a tour of the Cistercian Monastery of Poblet; from the Dry Stone Route of Mont-roig del Camp to the Modernist legacy of Reus. Nor should we forget a visit to the Ebro Delta, one of the most fascinating natural enclaves in the Iberian Peninsula. We’ve put together an offering that will satisfy every type of rambler, hiker or trekker. During the week, you will be accommodated at the Hotel Best Cap Salou, located on the sea front of the Bay of Salou in the most attractive part of the town. This three star hotel offers a host of facilities and services and has direct access to the beach and the E12 trail.

Welcome to Catalonia! Welcome to the counties of Tarragona!

HIKING ACTIVITIES

1. L’Ametlla de Mar - El Perelló

Distance: 12 kmAltitude difference: +400 mApprox. duration (not counting stops): 4 hDifficulty level: medium

The section of the GR-92 (European long-distance trail E-12) that runs between the towns of L’Ametlla de Mar and El Perelló, in the county of Baix Ebre, has become a real classic in the hiking world in Catalonia. The reason for this is quite simple: it runs alongside one of the most beautiful stretches of the Catalan coastline. The path provides a genuine balcony over the Mediterranean, with rugged cliffs, coves of

the most spectacular emerald green, and pinewoods that come down to kiss the water’s edge. It is a real treat for the eyes at any time of year. Leaving the fishing port of L’Ametlla de Mar, the path runs for 12 kilometres as far as the beach of El Perelló (Ampolla). This hike is a must for discovering the local coastal paths and some of the most exquisite coves – many of them completely unspoilt – in Catalonia.

2. Siurana

Distance: 6 kmAltitude difference: +200 mApprox. duration (not counting stops): 3 hDifficulty level: easy-medium

The town of Siurana was the last Muslim stronghold in the region known today as Catalonia. Tortosa and Miravet had already fallen, yet Siurana still resisted. Its sheer rock faces and imposing castle formed an imposing barrier and made this spot virtually impregnable. However, Siurana’s fate was already sealed. The story

goes that, moments before the defeat, the daughter of the Wali of Siurana, the beautiful Abdelazia, appeared galloping on a magnificent white horse towards the cliff edge near the castle walls. When she reached it, the animal took an enormous leap and together they plunged to their deaths in the void. The unbelievers found

an imprint of the horse’s hoof embedded in the rock as proof of the pureblood’s final race to carry Abdelazia to immortality. The proposed hike invites you to dream about Moorish princesses and the glorious golden years of Siurana, but above all it allows you to revisit two of the most evocative historic approaches to this unique and captivating place. It may not be a long hike, but it is particularly

spectacular for its views, the sheer rock faces, and its medieval trails. The path of La Trona, which may be very high yet does not pose any difficulty, is a true wonder of nature. Siurana is unquestionably one of the most fascinating places in Catalonia thanks to the power of both its natural setting and its history. At the end of this activity, participants will have free time to wander around the town at their leisure.

The Sierra of Montsant is one of the most singular natural spots in Catalonia. This stunning rocky massif has been shaped by erosion over the centuries into a series of sheer rock faces, caves and deep gorges. From the picnic area at Sant Antoni (Ulldemolins) we head to the chapel of

magical and isolated spots on a mountain range that, in itself, a real spectacle for the eyes. The hiking trail runs parallel to the River Montsant and then along the Fraguerau gorge or ravine. The rocky walls we pass during the whole walk could leave nobody unmoved. They are composed of thousands of rounded shapes that your imagination will conjure into the appropriate image. It is really worth stopping to contemplate the stunning beauty of the landscape as well as catching your breath. The final section, heading towards the chapel of Sant Bartomeu, starts by crossing a suspension bridge over the River Montsant. The path then gets progressively narrower until, without even realising it, we come to the foot of the rock that supports the chapel. This is a truly special and magical place, and knowing that a number of people lived here in complete isolation is quite fascinating.

4. Altafulla – Tarragona

Distance: 9 kmAltitude difference: +200 mApprox. duration (not counting stops): 3 h 30’Difficulty level: easy

Another classic hiking route of the Tarragona counties is this footpath between the mouth of the River Gaià (Altafulla) and the Long Beach of Tarragona. This is a fantastic walk that runs along some of the most beautiful coastal paths in the Mediterranean on the GR-92, passing such spectacular and iconic locations as Tamarit Castle, one of

the most enduring images of Tarragona. Both ancient and beautiful in equal measure, its walls simply exude history. All kinds of individuals have used it as a home, and the castle itself has served a whole range of different purposes, most notably as a lookout stronghold. This is hardly surprising, as the castle, which was built in Romanesque style in the eleventh

state. The walk through the Forest of La Marquesa runs through woods of Aleppo pine parallel to the coast, so if you start from the east you eventually reach Tarragona’s Long Beach. The vegetation exudes a sense of peace and seclusion, and once you’ve been walking for a while you will find yourself in the midst of pines, scrub, juniper bushes closer to the coast, and some fan palms. This landscape reflects the original vegetation of the Costa Daurada, always shaped by the Garbí wind (south-westerly) that helps to give the coastal shrubs and trees their leaning stance.

century, stands right on the coastal path next to the sea. Other points of interest on the route include the fortified tower of La Móra (sixteenth century) and the wonderful coves of Roca Plana and Cala Fonda, among others. The final feature of special interest on the path is the Forest of La Marquesa (The Marchioness), somewhere that may be close to the road and only eight kilometres from the city of Tarragona, but is very secluded. This spot was saved from urban speculation thanks to its owner (a Marchioness, hence the name) who in the 1960s refused to sell the land and has kept it in its natural

5. Escaladei

Distance: 9 kmAltitude difference: +350 mApprox. duration (not counting stops): 3 hDifficulty level: medium

This is a fantastic route around the Monastery of Escaladei, on the southern side of the Sierra of Montsant. This walk is recommended for anyone who wants to soak up our historic and cultural heritage in a beautiful natural setting. The upward section follows a gentle rise that starts at the village of Escaladei, passes the Monastery, and links up with the old Carthusian Path via La Pietat. During

the second part of the hike, we will pass beneath the overhang of the largest outcrop of the Sierra de Montsant. The downward section offers an impressive aerial view of the ruins of the Escaladei. Its majesty even today makes it easy to imagine the historical and architectural importance of the monastery at the peak of its splendour.

- 16 -

The hike is complemented by a visit to the Monastery of Escaladei. Walking through it, you learn how in the twelfth century the monks from the Carthusian Order came from Provence to build a monastery here and thus found the first Carthusian settlement in Spain. They chose a unique setting, protected by the mountains of the Sierra Major de Montsant, where a shepherd had a vision of angels climbing to heaven up a stairway that appeared over a large pine tree, hence the name Escaladei or “God’s stairway”. The monastery existed until 1835 and enjoyed periods of great splendour. Over the course of seven centuries the monks tended the fields, built windmills and spread the practice of vine cultivation. The Prior (who lent his name to the county, Priorat) was entitled to deliver basic justice and served as the general mayor of the villages in the central

part of the county as we know it today, which more or less matches the area of the Designation of Origin of Priorat wines.

With the Ecclesiastical Confiscations of Mendizábal (1835) the monks were suddenly evicted, deprived by decree of their lands and obliged to abandon their cells and cloisters, their church and lodgings. In just two years the majestic monastery was reduced to a pile of ruins as a result of continuous sackings and pillage. Today you can visit the ruins on a guided tour of the outside of three cloisters, the church and the refectory, as well as one of the cells which has been faithfully reconstructed. The Monastery of Escaladei is thus an absolute must for anyone interested in taking a journey back in time to the origins of the county of Priorat.

*This activity cannot be done on a Monday as the museum is closed.*When registering for this activity, you will need to pay a supplement of €6 for the guided tour of the Monastery

6. Capafonts

Distance: 9,5 kmAltitude difference: +450 mApprox. duration (not counting stops): 4 hDifficulty level: challenging

This is a lovely circular hike through the heart of the Prades Mountains, one of the most solitary and attractive massifs in the mountains of Tarragona. It is a very varied route which starts and finishes in the town of Capafonts and takes in some spectacular sights such as the spring of La Llúdriga, the birthplace of the River Brugent; the cave of Les Gralles, a spectacular hemispherical rocky formation with a 60 metre waterfall; and the amazing stone arch of El Pont de Goi, which welcomes you to the plateau of

Motllats (whose name comes from the Latin monte latus, broad mountain). At Motllats, at an altitude of 1,000 metres, the landscape has been forged by the force of the winds that blow here so often, modelling the shape of the trees and shrubs which are smaller and more twisted than normal. We return to Capafonts on the other side of the ravine, with the option of entering the magnificent caves of Grèvol and La Foradada. In short, a very varied and attractive hike that will certainly not disappoint!

7. Tivissa

Distance: 9 kmAltitude difference: +425 mApprox. duration (not counting stops): 3 h 30’Difficulty level: medium

Tivissa is the cradle of the long-distance hiking trails in Spain. Indeed, in this very town, which stands in the midst of some spectacular mountains, the very first red-and-white long-distance marker was painted in 1975, specifically at the chapel of Sant Blai. This identified the GR-7, the first fully-marked long-distance trail in the Iberian Peninsula. The route runs through some of the prettiest scenery in the area; leaving Tivissa, we ascend the spectacular trail of La Llena along a beautiful cobbled path which leads to the highest point of the route. We then hike along a broad

track with unparalleled views of Tivissa before starting the last part of the hike which brings us back to the town along the GR-7. We will make a stop at the chapel of Sant Blai to hold a brief commemorative ceremony as a tribute from the Catalan hiking community to the European long-distance trails, as it is in this very spot that two of the three European trails that traverse Catalonia converge: the E4 and the E7. After the tribute we will return to Tivissa along the GR-7 in less than 30 minutes.

*This activity will only take place on Wednesday 6 May

8. Tarragona

As a result of the Roman Empire’s conquest of the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal), the Roman administration set up a series of provinces, one of which was Hispania Citerior, the closest to Rome, with Tarraco (today’s Tarragona) as its capital. The first Roman settlement in the area was a military encampment whose objective was to consolidate the conquest of the Peninsula. Little by little, the military outpost turned into a city, which

is how Tarraco came to be founded in the third century BC. The city of Tarragona, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000 due to its Roman archaeological remains, is an amazing city, where the Roman legacy can still be found in an old quarter that preserves the essence of the medieval city intact. This is the real World Heritage of Tarragona! A heritage made up of monuments that represent momentous periods in history,

of nooks and crannies that transport you back to Roman, medieval, modern and Modernist times, yet also a heritage forged by people, human stories, little moments, and emotions. During this excursion we will also visit the Devil’s Bridge (also known as the Aqueduct of Les Ferreres), a Roman aqueduct that was built in the first century BC. Measuring 127 metres long and 27 metres high, it was used to

transport water from the River Francolí to the ancient city of Tarraco. It is one of the most monumental and best-preserved aqueducts dating from the Roman Empire and the largest one in Catalonia. Finally, we will also visit the National Archaeological Museum of Tarragona which houses a comprehensive exhibition portraying eight centuries of the history of Tarraco.

9. el monestir de Poblet i Montblanc

Can you imagine delving into the world of mysticism and embarking on a study of what were once the leading cultural centres of the Middle Ages? The Costa Daurada was a hub of culture during those times, when a style of monastic life based on hard work and study swept across Europe. The order of the Cistercians originated in France and eventually settled in the counties of Tarragona. All around the monasteries they built administrative buildings, hospitals, chapels, artisan’s workshops and farms.

Today we can revisit this medieval life on the Cistercian Route, which takes in the three monasteries of Poblet (listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO), Santes Creus and Vallbona de les Monges. Our trip will focus on a guided tour of one of these three monasteries, Poblet, which is the most famous and monumental of the three. It is a stunning architectural complex and the largest inhabited Cistercian monastery in Europe. Almost all the original buildings are still standing, which were constructed according to the

GR-175 (the Cistercian Route), which is a lovely walk of around 30 minutes. The excursion is complemented by a guided tour of the monumental and artistic features of the medieval town of Montblanc. Various sections of the walls, the imposing church of Santa Maria, the church of Sant Miquel, the hospital of Santa Magdalena and the main town square all make the ideal scenario in which to explain some of the most important events in the history of Catalonia and the Legend of Legends (St George, the dragon, and the rescue of the princess, which allegedly took place in the town of Montblanc).

requirements of a vibrant and constantly expanding community that enjoyed the protection of the sovereigns of the Catalan-Aragonese Confederation, especially Pere III the Ceremonious (1336-1387), who made the monastery his dynasty’s Royal Pantheon. Poblet is the largest monastery on the Cistercian Route and of the three (two monasteries and one nunnery) it is the only one that is still home to an active community of monks. In 1991 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. One of the added attractions of a visit to Poblet is that we reach it on foot from the village of Espluga de Francolí along the

10. wine tourism and a walk in the Priorat region

The Qualified Designation of Origin (DOQ) of Priorat covers a small area of no more than 20,000 hectares, of which only 1,600 hectares are planted with vines. The landscape is extremely rugged – “cataclysmic” in the words of Josep Pla, the finest Catalan writer of the twentieth century. This makes growing vines very difficult, demanding and expensive. The vines produce very little compared to other winemaking regions. However, they

do offer exceptional grapes which, when placed in the hands of their passionate winemakers, end up as wines that are acclaimed all over the world for their distinct character and extraordinary complexity. In the ground floors of several ancient houses in the DOQ Priorat you will still find dedicated winemakers and oenologists working to produce just a few thousand bottles. The wine comes from vines that were planted when it was still a

sin for women to show their ankles! These bottles are shipped off to wine merchants in New York, Zurich, Cape Town and many other far-flung destinations.Nearby, new wineries and new plantations consistently underscore the commitment to this region. Priorat is not an easy land; nothing comes for free, yet even so it has managed to seduce a number of wine connoisseurs who love the wines produced by this slaty terrain. The DOQ Priorat is full of wineries, always quite small ones, and despite the difficulties involved many of them are prepared to welcome visitors and share their raison

d’être: a passion for wine and the region that brings it to life. We propose a visit to the Buil & Giné winery, located in one of the most attractive corners of the Priorat region, with a wine-tasting and a selection of artisan tapas made with traditional local ingredients. Before visiting the winery we will take a walk between the villages of Cabacés and Vilella Baixa, about eight kilometres (suitable for every ability level) at the very heart of the Priorat region, along the old path that links the two towns. This is a very comprehensive day out that you’re bound to enjoy!

*When registering for this activity, you will need to pay a supplement of €20 for the visit to the Buil & Giné winery, wine tasting and tapas

11. the Natural Park of the Ebro Delta

The Ebro Delta is the largest wetland in Catalonia. Covering an area of 320 square kilometres, it is considered to be the most important aquatic habitat in the Western Mediterranean after the Camargue in France. Finding a harmonious balance between its natural features and human activities has never been easy to achieve. However, its considerable environmental value endures in the face of the significant human settlement of much of its area and its important agricultural role.

Our proposal for this excursion is to visit the Ebro Delta Eco-Museum where visitors can learn about the human and natural values of this unique ecosystem. We will then embark on a four kilometre walk from Riumar to the Port of Deltebre. Riumar has a fine sandy beach flanked by a beautiful series of dunes, extending almost four kilometres along the eastern part of the Delta, and is one of the very few beaches with a dune system in Catalonia. Along the route there are several observation points for spotting the Delta’s native birdlife and wildlife.

CULTURAL ACTIVITIES

12. the Modernist Route of Reus and the dry-stone huts of Mont-roig del Camp

Sensual shapes, organic motifs and brightly-coloured fantasy: Modernism has always had a strong personality in Catalonia. Apart from Barcelona, where the influence of Modernism is known to all, the city of Reus, just ten kilometres from Salou, is another of the Catalan epicentres of this artistic movement so characteristic of the second half of the nineteenth

century. Reus was transformed thanks to the contributions of great architects such as Antonio Gaudí, Lluís Domènech i Montaner and Josep Puig i Cadafalch. The Modernist Route of Reus takes you on a discovery tour of the façades of the 26 most interesting Modernist buildings on a very pleasant walk through Reus city centre. To help your appreciation of the

The construction method of these huts consisted of laying rows of dry stones, one on top of the other, without any kind of mortar to hold them in place. The stones needed to have a slight downward slope towards the outside to make it difficult for rainwater to get into the hut, forcing it to run off outwards. The dry-stone huts of Mont-roig del Camp have a remarkable range of styles and shapes. Some 141 huts in a good state of conservation have been listed and some of them – the ones we will be visiting – have the status of monuments. Their doorways face the south to take full advantage of the sun and protect them from the strong mistral winds. Inside some of the huts you will notice some small cavities; those along the ground (cocons) were used to keep water and wine cool, while other ones, at mid-height, served to protect food from being reached by wildlife or as troughs for the animals that worked the fields with the farmers.

façades of the selected buildings, there is a plaque in front of each one giving its name, the date it was built and the name of the architect. Some of the highlights on the Modernist Route include works by Lluís Domènech i Montaner (the Pere Mata Institute, Casa Navàs, Casa Rull and Casa Gasull), whose stylish elegance also influenced other Modernist buildings constructed in Reus. In this respect it is worth mentioning the buildings by Pere Caselles, who collaborated with Domènech on the Pere Mata Institute and went on to design a large number of buildings in the city. It is also worth mentioning the work of Joan Rubió i Bellver, a disciple and collaborator of Antoni Gaudí.In the afternoon, after a picnic lunch, we propose getting to know the area around Mont-roig del Camp with its agricultural landscape and most notably its famous dry-stone huts, a form of construction that was recently listed by UNESCO as being of intangible cultural heritage.
