Mobile Medical ClinicThe rural population frequently lacks access to even the most basic health care. Often, traveling to the nearest doctor is too strenuous and expensive, let alone the costs for treatment. Many ailments would be easily remedied. However, left untreated they can have grave consequences and in some cases be fatal. With one parent deceased, the family usually slips into even greater poverty. With the Mobile Medical Clinic healthcare is brought directly to the villages. A doctor, two nurses, a pharmacist, and a driver visit the rural population and administer health checks, treatments, and education. During two days a week the team takes a jeep to the Jawadhu Hills, a plateau so remote the larger vehicle cannot climb it.

Mobile LibrarySince books are expensive and libraries few and far between, children from poor families lack access and therefore reading ability. This is disastrous considering how reading is the gateway to all education. The Mobile Library has the capacity of carrying 2000 books into the slums and villages for distribution. These books enable children and youths to feed their fantasies, nurture their interests, and widen their horizons. The library is a simple but very effective step of breaking the cycle of poverty through education.

Educational Sponsorship Program To ensure the continuation of their studies, a special fund and tutoring program has been set up for students from especially unprivileged backgrounds. The adolescents receive money for tuition and housing and are closely supported throughout college. This empowers them to become self-determined adults. The girls who previously lived in the Sarasvathi children’s village also enjoy this care. Due to their younger age, the staff meet with them more often to offer counsel and guidance when needed. Whenever possible, these efforts are undertaken in close cooperation with the students’ families.

Arunachala Rising Sun – Who We AreArunachala Rising Sun supports the small but effective aid projects maintained by Regenboog India Foundation in and around the city of Tiruvannamalai, South India. We are motivated by Regenboog‘s dedication to empowering people from precarious walks of life to lead an existence full of opportunity. Regional natives make up the Regenboog team. This facilitates a deep understanding for the challenges facing impoverished locals and for sustainable solutions that are tailored precisely to the population’s needs. While we follow Regen-boog’s activities with great attentiveness and delight we limit our involve-ment to fundraising in Europe. In our efforts we make a point preserving and forwarding every donation to India in its entirety. Our administrative expenses are therefore covered by sponsors. This way we can ensure that donations generate the greatest possible benefit for the people that need it.

Evening Schools Children whose families cannot afford sending them to a private institution have little opportunity to advance their education in the often overcrowded and underfunded public schools. Given those circumstances, the escape from poverty is impossible. The evening schools, taking place daily at different locations in the city and surrounding villages, offer a learning space to pupils from public schools. They are tutored by professionals, are able to ask ques-tions and deepen their understanding of the curriculum. Besides academics, the students are also trained in social responsibility.

JANUARY Village children gather around the mobile library deciding which of the over 2,000 books to read next.

JULY From time to time Regenboog offers vocational training to adults, enabling them to earn a better living.

AUGUST The entire village gathers around the mobile clinic to receive routine checkups and vital medications.

MARCH If it was not for Sathya and her team from the mobile clinic, this elderly woman would be left completely without health care.

SEPTEMBER Renukadevi attends the 5th grade at Arunachala Village School and dreams of becoming a doctor.

APRIL When it comes to her education, Gayathri goes the extra mile. She wishes to work at Regenboog India Foundation as a social worker someday.

OCTOBER The government schools’ libraries are often ill-equipped. The mobile library makes sure the children still get practice.

MAY The warming climate has exacerbated the already precarious conditions for many subsistence farmers, who depend on the annual monsoon.

NOVEMBER Before class starts at this evening school, students are already comparing their notes.

JUNE Since the Jawadhu Hills are so remote, the mobile clinic also visits the public schools in this region.

DECEMBER During a pooja, foods are offered in biodegradable bowls made of dried banana leaves.
