Delhiexplore New and Old Delhi, welcome dinnerExplore Delhi, capital and political hub of India. Delhi has been

continuously inhabited since the 6th century BC and has served as acapital of various kingdoms and empires. It has been captured,ransacked, and rebuilt several times, and modern Delhi is a group ofseveral cities spread across the metropolitan region.

Explore Delhi Start your exploration of New Delhi with a drive pastIndia Gate, the stone arch of triumph bearing thenames of 85,000 Indian Army soldiers who died inWorld War I.

Take some time to soak in the view at Humayun’sTomb, built in the mid-16th century by the seniorwife of the second Mughal emperor. This is the firstsignificant example of Mughal architecture in India,and one of the most beautiful buildings in the city.The elements of its design are echoed in the TajMahal. The building is squat with high archedentrances topped by a bulbous dome andsurrounded by formal gardens. Found at thegardens are the red-and-white sandstone and black-and-yellow marble tomb of Humayun’s wife and,somewhat surprisingly, the tomb of Humayun’sbarber!

If you have the energy, visit Dilli Haat, a traditionalvillage market, which includes a food and craftbazaar, displaying the richness of Indian culture. Youmay have the opportunity to have Henna painted.

Delhi to Agradrive to Agra, visit the Red Fort of Agra, sunset at the Taj MahalThe origins of the city of Agra can be traced back to the days of the

Mahabharata, the epic poem of Great India when it was calledAgrevana, meaning “the edge of the forest.” Agra served as capital forthe Mughal Empire during the 16th and 17th centuries and flourished asa center of art, drawing inspiration from Persian, Islamic, Turkish,Byzantine and Indian styles. It has been immortalized ever since by theTaj Mahal – a magnificent marble mausoleum that epitomizes love, yetAgra has so many more monuments that tell a rich narrative of thetides and times of Man.

Drive to Agra Leave Delhi this morning for Agra, which is about athree-hour drive. Arrive in time for lunch at yourhotel.

Agra Fort The Red Fort of Agra was founded by EmperorAkbar in 1565 on the right bank of the Yamuna. Thewalls of Agra Fort are made of red sandstone andcontain palaces, audience halls, and mosques. Thepalace is notable for its smooth blending of Hinduand central Asian architectural styles.

Agra to Jaipursunrise at the Taj Mahal, drive to Jaipur, visit Chand BaoriJaipur is known as the Pink City, a rather idealized description of the

terra-cotta-colored lime plaster that coats the old part of the city’swalls, buildings, and temples. The reasons for painting the town pinkare unknown, but various theories, but the most popular reason is thatpink is the traditional color of hospitality, and the city was freshlypainted and paved with pink gravel to warmly welcome Edward VII forhis visit in 1876. The city is painted pink once every 10 years by theMunicipal Corporation.

Sunrise at theTaj Mahal

Visit the Taj Mahal at sunrise, allowing you a glimpseof the monument with the changing backdrop of themorning sky, watching it go from a dull gray to ashimmering white as the sun rises.

Drive to Jaipur Leave Agra and drive to Jaipur this morning. Enjoylunch en route. The total drive will take just over fivehours.

Visit ChandBaori

On the way to Jaipur, visit Chand Baori, one of thelargest stepwells in the world. Enjoy the view as youlook down on this cross between a coliseum and anM.C. Escher painting.

Jaipurexplore the Amber Fort, learn to cook traditional Indian dishesThe history and times of Jaipur are deeply entwined with the stories of

royal princes and princesses, with grand Mughals and later with visitingdignitaries from the British Royal family or 20th century royalty like theU.S. Presidential families. Modern Jaipur plays host to all of them and tomany thousands who come here, enchanted by all that the city has tooffer. Jaipur is undoubtedly a city of kings and queens and itsdistinctive architecture clearly emphasizes this. Even so it has atimeless appeal, since many of the traditional crafts patronized by 18thcentury rulers are still thriving. There are streets that are famous forjewelry, tie-and-dye, pottery, “meenakari,” leatherwork, and stonecarvings.

Amber Fort Visit the Amber Fort, an opulent four-level palaceconstructed of red sandstone and marble. Soak inthe history of the palace and enjoy the stunningarchitectural photo opportunities.

Jaipur to Pushkardrive to Pushkar, spend the afternoon at the Pushkar Camel FairPushkar is a pilgrimage site for Hindus and Sikhs, and is filled with

temples. Most of the temples in the area are from the 18th century andlater, as many temples were destroyed by Muslim conquests in thearea. The most famous temple is the red-spired Brahma Temple.

Head to Pushkar this morning. The drive will takeabout three hours.

Pushkarspend a full day exploring the Pushkar Camel FairPushkar is famous for its camel fair, an annual, multi-day livestock fair.

Apart from trading of livestock, it is an important pilgrimage season forHindus to the Pushkar Lake. Cultural events and competitions includedancing, tug of war, and a longest mustache competition amongothers.
