INDIA‟S PERFORMANCE AND PLACE OF HANDLOOM

INDUSTRY IN THE GLOBAL MARKET

The present chapter has been devoted to analyse India‟s place and performance of

Handloom Industry in the global market. The chapter has been divided into two sections.

Section-1, presents India‟s place and performance of Carpet and Floor Covering

Products in the global market and Section-2, presents India‟s place and performance of

Home Furnishing Products such as Bed Linen, Table Linen, Kitchen Line and Toilet

Linen in global the market.

Section-1

5.1 Carpet and Floor Covering Products :

The study has identified 15 items of carpet and floor covering products whose HS-

Code (4-digit) and HS-Code (6-digit) along with their description given in the Table 5.1.

Table 5.2 presents India‟s export of Carpet and Floor Covering products having

HS-Code 5701,5702,5703,5704 and 5705. This table illustrates that the export of these

Carpet and Floor covering products was of Rs. 1893.77 crores in 1996 and to the extent

of Rs. 3928.74 crores in 2009. In 2007-08 the handloom export of India suffered badly.

Consequently the export of the Carpet and Floor Covering products also has been

adversely affected by recent global recession. And the export of Carpet and Floor

covering products rapidly decreased. The annual compound growth rate of Carpet and

Floor Covering products i.e, 5701 , 5702, 5703, 5704 and 5705 was 8.90, 0.77 , 13.62,

36.49, 5.82 respectively. The values of annual compound growth rate of these products

indicate the growth of export of carpet and floor covering products.

major importers of this product are European Union , United States , Germany, Turkey

and Italy. European Union is the major importer of Carpets & other textile floor

Turkey and Italy. India has the utmost share i.e. 40.95 % in Turkey and the least share

i.e. 5.82% in Italy.

Germany, Turkey and Italy. The United States, Germany and Turkey gives 1st

preference to India for the import of products having HS-Code 570110. The European

Union awards 2nd , and Italy awards 4th rank to the carpets & other textile floor

coverings of wool or fine animal hair, knotted . In view of this, Indian products in

general, are facing tough competition from Iran, China, Nepal and Pakistan. The

European Union imports carpet and floor covering mostly from Iran followed by India,

Pakistan, Nepal and Turkey. Indian carpet and floor covering are cheaper than those of

the Iran but EU prefers quality, designs and pattern of Iranian carpets and floor covering

despite India‟s low price per unit. Iran uses modern technologies in developing graphics

and computer generated design. Common motifs include scrolling vine networks,

arabesques, palmettes, cloud bands, medallions, and overlapping geometric

compartments rather than animals and humans. Figural designs are particularly popular in

the Iranian market and are not nearly as common in carpets exported to the west. Iran,

was covered with superb Persian carpets. Sheep were specially bred to produce fine wool

for weaving carpets.

European Union and Turkey give second preference to the Indian products with HS-

general, India is facing tough competition from China, Turkey and Iran. China’s modern

design and low price are attracting new customer base. Product mapping with the

consumer preferences is necessary for the future growth of the carpet. Indian carpet

industry will find it difficult to compete with Chinese industries in terms of volume and

prices.

In recent times Iranian carpets have come under fierce competition from India

producing fakes of the original Iranian designs as well as genuine cheaper substitutes.

Most of the problems facing this traditional art is due to absence of patenting and

branding the products as well as reduced quality of raw materials in the local market

and the consistent loss of original design patterns. The absence of modern R&D, is

causing rapid decline in the size as well as market value of this art.

on quality. Indian carpets can be of high quality but because of demand of low quality,

high quantity goods, Indian carpet quality is on a decline. At the same time, China‟s

manufacturing structure being largely different from that of India surpasses us in

volumes. In fact, China produces in bulk and since the carpet especially hand tufted

varieties are completely mechanized , India gets a beating in the volumes of hand tufted

production. Though the exporters in India are trying their best to compete, the hands fail

before machines. It was learnt that China‟s government supports both in manufacturing

and in research and development (R&D). The Chinese constantly innovate worker

friendly machines that can weave and produce more carpet in a short time.

1996 and to the extent of Rs. 1912.57 crores in 2009. In 2007-08 the handloom export of
