SOA is a software architecture model

SOA is a win-win solution for organisations. An

organisation can easily choose to replace a few old

systems with new enterprise application like ERP and still

continue to use old systems that cannot be replaced

As it is based on interoperability and open standards, the

web services that are published by an application can be

subscribed by other applications for usage. This provides

decoupling of certain processes and allow flexibility as well

eBay employs SOA as a software-based integration tier to

manage more than two petabytes of data. eBay is made

up of more than six million lines of code and the company

rolls out more than 100,000 lines of new code every two

weeks. In addition, there are 30,000 software builds perweek. eBay uses both component-oriented and service-

oriented architecture technologies.

They have built a service architecture and uses it to

enable integration across dissimilar technology stacks. Forexample, they have enabled open inter-operation between

C++ and Java technologies via services."

Banking Sector is one area which has been highly affected

by the implementation of SOA in their processes.

SOA offers an approach to banking payments that is a

progressive solution with lower costs of operations thanother alternatives. The inherent flexibility allows new

payment channels and new payment sources and targets.

An SOA solution can even enable the opening of an

account for multiple product lines that is seamlesslyintegrated with multiple back-end systems. The benefits

can include not only lower costs, but increased revenue

and optimized customer relationships

SBI and TCSs BaNCs

The BaNCS system is based on service-oriented

architecture (SOA) and is platform and database

independent.

The implementation of the Tata Consultancy Services(TCS) BaNCS system at the State Bank of India (SBI)

represents the largest core systems project ever

undertaken.

Core systems modernization has allowed the State Bankof India to centralize computer processing and operations

functions, offer new banking products to all the citizens of

India, reverse a trend of customer attrition, and

consolidate its affiliate banks. Additionally, the bank can

Future Scope of SOA in India

In today's world, new business opportunities heavily

depend on their IT infrastructure availability

SOA is now being deployed by most of the enterprises to

optimise their systems and reduce IT costs.

Enterprises should not go ahead with SOA as a three-year

or five-year plan. It is a long-drawn process. It is a journey.

Most of the companies have been looking for ROI from

SOA implementation immediately, which should not be the

case,

Also, a lot of organisations have found it difficult to

incorporate it into its systems due to large number of

changes required. SOA should be implemented in rather a

step-by-step method

With almost all the companies incorporating IT in their

businesses, and the enterprises and corporations

nowadays are dominated by various applications like ERP

and CRM.

Organisations have to differentiate themselves based on

the standard applications and packages they implement.

To change the standard package the enterprise has to put

in a lot of money and time.

Enterprises can customise most of their applications

based on their business demands, and then combine all of

them within the same architecture. This can be done in-

house.

SOA can help them gain competitive advantage in the way

they use it in their systems

Hence, SOA though has been in the indian industries for

quite a while now, it still is expected to show further growth

as it can integrate smaller enerprises with the larger

enterprises and also help the various organisations to

optimise their processes better.
