1. INTRODUCTION
The SPIE IIT Guwahati student chapter came into existence officially on 30th of October, 2015 at
the premises of Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati due to a proposal brought forward by
some like-minded research scholars of the Department of Physics. The chapter was initially
started with 21 student members and gradually the number increased to 30. The primary aim of
the chapter is to popularise the field of optics among undergraduate students of the north-east
India. The students of most of the colleges and universities of north-east India are quite unaware
of the various scopes and developments in the field of optics, as they rarely get the opportunity to
explore the field. Moreover, they do not have a core course on optics as they have for the other
fields.
1.1 Objective
The SPIE IITG student chapter is first of its kind in north-eastern part of India. We take this
opportunity to inspire the students of the north-eastern part of India towards the field of optics
through some events or awareness drive at various schools, colleges, institutes and universities,
so that they are driven towards the field of optics or related areas. We aim in highlighting the
various scopes, researches, developments, inventions, etc. in the field of optics and its related
areas. Every year we plan to organize membership drive to enrol more number of UG/PG
students into our chapter and work with some definite objectives, so that we can make our
presence feel in the national arena.

2.4 SPIE Invited Lecture
We have organized the first SPIE invited lecture at IIT Guwahati in association with Dept. of
Physics, IIT Guwahati on 3rd of October, 2016 (9:30 am - 10:30 am). The lecture was delivered
by one of the eminent personality in the field of optics and photonics, Prof. Prasanta Kumar
Datta, Department of Physics, IIT Kharagpur.
Brief Bio-sketch of the Invited Speaker:
Prof. P. K. Datta, joined the Department of Physics, IIT Kharagpur in 2000 and developed a
laboratory for ultrafast nonlinear optics with funding from various Government agencies in India
and international Collaboration projects funded by JSPS, Japan, Ministry of Education, Italy and
ICTP, Italy. Presently he is working on ultrafast science by developing femtosecond pump-
probe, THz Spectroscopy, Z-scan and time-resolved MOKE facility in his laboratory. He
received his undergraduate and post graduate degree from Calcutta University, and PhD from
Burdwan University. Before joining IIT Kharagpur, Prof. Datta worked in various scientific
positions at Centre for Advanced Technology (DAE), Indore, DRDO, Pune and Physical
Research Laboratory (ISRO), Ahmedabad. He did his postdoctoral research work on different
aspects of nonlinear optics at Pavia University, Italy and Strathclyde University Scotland, Heriot-
Watt University, Scotland, Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, Pisa, Italy, University of Michigan,
USA, INRS, Montreal, Canada and Universita Cattolica, Brescia, Italy. He has 62 publications in
internationally refereed journals and have produced 8 PhDs so far.
Title of the Talk:
Optimized generation of terahertz radiation for phonon spectroscopy of doped GaSe Crystal.
Abstract:
Introducing the different methods of THz generation and their pros and cons, the optical
rectification applied in a ZnTe crystal with a femtosecond optical pulse at 800nm for the
generation of efficient and wide band-width THz radiation will be described. The effect of pulse
shape and its chirping on the efficiency and bandwidth of the generated THz radiation will be
presented. The generated THz radiation is used to obtain time domain THz absorption
spectroscopy in doped GaSe to identify the combinational phonon modes.
Outcome:
The event was quite successful and about 45+ research scholars along with faculty
members of the department attended the talk.
Being a regular member of SPIE for years, Prof. P. K. Datta also shared some important
information about SPIE.
