Indian National Movement- Liberalist
Causes Of Indian National Movement:
• Western education - Macaulay had instituted a western educational system in India with the sole aim of creating a class of educated Indians who could serve their colonial masters in the administration of the ‘natives’.
End of the old social order
• British imperialism put an end to the old social order of the country.
• This was resented by many Indians.
भारतीय राष्ट्रीय आंदोलन के कारण:• पश्चिमी शिक्षा - मकैाले ने शिक्षक्षत
भारतीयों का एक वर्ग बनाने केएकमात्र उद्देचय के साथ भारत में एक पश्चिमी िैक्षक्षक प्रणाली की स्थापना की थी जो ’मलू ननवाशसयों’ के प्रिासन में अपने औपननवेशिक स्वामी की सेवा कर सकती थी।
पुरानी सामाश्जक व्यवस्था का अतं• ब्रिटिि साम्राज्यवाद ने देि के पुराने
सामाश्जक व्यवस्था को खत्म कर टदया।
• इस पर कई भारतीयों ने नाराजर्ीजताई।
Socio-religious reform movements
• Socio-religious reform movements of the 19th century helped a great deal in the rise of nationalism in India.
Economic policies of the British
• The oppressive economic policies of the British led to widespread poverty and indebtedness among the Indians especially farmers.
Legacy of the Revolt of 1857
• After the Revolt of 1857 and its bitter crushing by the British, there was a deep racial tension between the British and the Indians.
सामाश्जक-धाशमगक सधुार आंदोलन• 19 वीं सदी के सामाश्जक-धाशमगक
सधुार आंदोलनों ने भारत में राष्ट्रवाद के उदय में बहुत मदद की।
अगें्रजों की आर्थगक नीनतयां• अगें्रजों की दमनकारी आर्थगक नीनतयों
के कारण भारतीयों वविेषकर ककसानों में व्यापक र्रीबी और ऋणग्रस्तता पैदा हो र्ई।
1857 के ववद्रोह की ववरासत• 1857 के ववद्रोह और अगें्रजों द्वारा
कुिल टदए जाने के बाद, अगें्रजों और भारतीयों के बीि र्हरा नस्लीय तनाव पैदा हो र्या था।
National movements outside the country
• There were many national movements outside the country that inspired the Indian nationalists like the French Revolution, the American War of Independence and so on.
Ilbert Bill controversy
• This also exposed the true nature of British colonialism to the educated Indians.
The Moderate Phase Of The Indian National Movement
The time period from 1885 to 1905 can be called the ‘Moderate Phase’. The leaders of this phase are called moderates.

श्जन्होंने फ्ांसीसी क्ांनत, अमेररकी स्वतंत्रता सगं्राम और इतने पर भारतीय राष्ट्रवाटदयों को पे्रररत ककया।
इलबिग ब्रबल वववाद• इसने शिक्षक्षत भारतीयों के शलए
ब्रिटिि उपननवेिवाद के वास्तववक स्वरूप को भी उजार्र ककया।
भारतीय राष्ट्रीय आंदोलन का मध्यम िरण1885 से 1905 तक की समय अवर्ध को 'मध्यम िरण' कहा जा सकता है।इस िरण के नेताओं को मॉडरेि कहाजाता है।
The Indian National Congress (INC)
• Formed in 1885 by Allan Octavian Hume, a retired British civil servant.
• First session was held in Bombay under the presidency of Womesh Chandra Bonnerjee in 1885.
• First session was attended by 72 delegates from across the country.
• Viceroy of India at the time was Lord Dufferin.
• The Congress was formed with the intention of discussing problems faced by the people of the country irrespective of caste, creed, religion or language.

• 1885 में एक सेवाननवतृ्त ब्रिटिि शसववल सेवक एलन ऑक्िेववयन ह्यूम द्वारा बनाया र्या।
• 1885 में वोमेि िंद्र बोनजी की अध्यक्षता में बॉम्बे में पहला सत्र आयोश्जत ककया र्या था।
• पहले सत्र में देि भर के 72प्रनतननर्धयों ने भार् शलया।
• उस समय भारत का वायसराय लॉडगडफररन था।
• कांगे्रस का र्ठन देि के लोर्ों की जानत, पंथ, धमग या भाषा के बावजदू होने वाली समस्याओं पर ििाग करने के उद्देचय से ककया र्या था।
Moderate phase (1885 – 1905)
• Moderate phase of the Congress (or the
national movement) was dominated by
the ‘moderates’.
• They were people who believed in British
justice and were loyal to them.
Prominent moderate leaders
• Dadabhai Naoroji
• Known as the ‘Grand old man of India.’
• He became the first Indian to become a
member of the House of Commons in
Britain.
• Wrote ‘Poverty and Un-British Rule in
India’
Womesh Chandra Bonnerjee
• First president of the INC.
मध्यम िरण (1885 - 1905)• कांगे्रस (या राष्ट्रीय आंदोलन) के
मध्यम िरण में 'मॉडरेि' का विगस्व था।
• वे ऐसे लोर् थे जो ब्रिटिि न्याय में ववचवास करते थे और उनके प्रनतवफादार थे।

• Founded ‘The Hindu’ newspaper where he criticised British imperialism.
• Also founded Tamil newspaper ‘Swadesamitran’.
• Co-founded the Madras MahajanaSabha.
Sir Surendranath Banerjee
• Also called ‘Rashtraguru’ and ‘Indian Burke’.
• Founded the Indian National Association.
• Founded newspaper ‘The Bengalee’.

Methods of the moderates
• They believed in peaceful and
constitutional methods to demand
and fulfil those demands.
• Used petitions, meetings,
resolutions, pamphlets, memoranda
and delegations to voice their
demands.
• Their method has been called 3P –
Prayers, Petition and Protest.
• Had complete faith in the British
justice system.
• Confined to the educated classes
only. Did not try to employ the
masses.
उदारवाटदयों के तरीके • वे मांर् और उन मांर्ों को पूरा करने
के शलए िांनतपूणग और सवंैधाननक तरीकों में ववचवास करते थे।
• अपनी मांर्ों को आवाज़ देने के शलए यार्िकाओं, बैठकों, प्रस्तावों, पिे, ज्ञापन और प्रनतननर्धमडंलों का इस्तेमाल ककया।
• उनकी पद्धनत को 3P कहा र्या है -प्राथगना, यार्िका और ववरोध।
• इनको ब्रिटिि न्याय प्रणाली में पूणग ववचवास था।
• केवल शिक्षक्षत वर्ग तक ही सीशमत है। जनता को रोजर्ार देने की कोशिि नहीं की।
• They aimed only at getting political rights and self-government under British dominion.
Successes of the moderates
• Indian Councils Act of 1892 was the first achievement of the INC.
• This Act increased the size of the legislative councils and also increased the proportion of non-officials in them.
• They were able to sow the seeds of nationalism in the people.
• They popularised ideals like democracy, liberty and equality.
• They exposed many draining economic policies of the British.
• उनका उद्देचय केवल ब्रिटिि प्रभतु्व के तहत राजनीनतक अर्धकार और स्व-िासन प्राप्त करना था।

अर्धननयम, INC की पहली उपलश्धधथी।
• इस अर्धननयम ने ववधान पररषदों के आकार में वदृ्र्ध की और उनमें र्ैर-अर्धकाररयों के अनुपात में भी वदृ्र्ध की।
• वे लोर्ों में राष्ट्रवाद के बीज बोने में सक्षम थे।
• उन्होंने लोकतंत्र, स्वतंत्रता और समानता जसेै आदिों को लोकवप्रय बनाया।
• उन्होंने अगें्रजों की कई आर्थगक नीनतयों को उजार्र ककया।

and opposed child marriage
and imposed widowhood.
Indian Councils Act 1892
• It was passed by the British Parliament to increase in the size of the legislative councils.
• It was the first step towards a representative form of government in modern India.
• र्ोपाल कृष्ट्ण र्ोखले और एम जी रानाड ेजसेै नेता भी समाज सुधारक थे और उन्होंने बाल वववाह का ववरोध ककया और ववधवापन को लार् ूककया।
भारतीय पररषद अर्धननयम 1892• ब्रिटिि संसद द्वारा इसे ववधान पररषदों के आकार में वदृ्र्ध के शलए पाररत ककया र्या था।
• यह आधुननक भारत में प्रनतननर्ध सरकार व्यवस्था की ओर पहला कदम था।

• They could not asksupplementary questions.
• The legislative councils wereempowered to make new lawsand repeal old laws with thepermission of the Governor-General.
• सदस्यों को बजि पर सवाल पूछने का अर्धकार टदया र्या था (श्जसे भारतीय पररषद अर्धननयम 1861 में रोक टदया र्या था) या जनटहत के मामले लेककन इसके शलए 6 टदन कानोटिस देना पड़ता था।
• वे पूरक प्रचन नहीं पूछ सकते थे।
