The State of IndianaIndiana is located in the

Midwestern region of the United States.

The weather is humid with cold winters and warm wet summers. It usually doesn’t get colder than 15° F in the winter or hotter than 90° F in the summer.

Indiana was ranked 8th in the top 20 tornado-prone states.

Indiana means “Land of the Indians”. The Indians played a big part in Indiana’s history.

Paleo-Indians were the first people on Indiana land, after the Ice Age, they came to hunt Mastodons.

Starting in 1679, French explorers and fur traders arrived. The Indians would guide and trade with them.

Indiana land in the French and Indian War, then gave up claim after losing the American Revolutionary War.

The U.S. made Indiana land part of the Northwest Territory, the Indians fought hard against U.S. control but states were formed.

Indiana became the 19th state on Dec. 11, 1816. Corydon was the capital, but in 1825 it was changed to Indianapolis.

Indiana became the first western state to mobilize. Indiana provided many men for the Union, and was part of the Underground Railroad.

Indiana recovered from the Great Depression during World War II, when Indiana became the 8th ranking state in making military supplies.

The 2014 Indy 500 was won by Ryan Hunter-Reay for $2.49 million. Top Speed 230 mph.

Took 13 years to build 1888-1901, out of oolitic limestone from Owen County, Indiana.

Stands 284 ft 6 in (15 ft shorter than the Statue of Liberty)
