2011-12 Men’s Cross Country Guide
This is IU East
Indiana University East grew out of an extension established at Earlham College that was operated by Earlham and Indiana University. In 1967, the arrangement was expanded to include Purdue and Ball State universities and the extension became the Eastern Indiana Center of Earlham College.
In 1969, reflecting the community’s response to this opportunity to take state university courses at home, Richmond citizens formed an association known as Eastern Indiana Community College, Inc., to raise funds for the construction of a new campus. Following a successful campaign in which they raised over $1 million, members of the community col-lege organization, with the consent of the four education institutions involved in the center, requested Indiana University to establish a regional campus in Richmond to assume responsibility for the operation.
The Indiana General Assembly approved this plan, and on July 1, 1971, the East-ern Indiana Center for Earlham College became Indiana University East, the sixth campus in the Indiana University regional system. On October 3, 1972, ground was broken at the new campus site north of Richmond. The first building, an all-purpose academic facility named Whitewater Hall, was completed in late 1974 and dedicated February 23, 1975.
Ground was broken for a new library/classroom build-ing on August 8, 1990. It was dedicated as the Brice E. Hayes Hall on June 12, 1992.
The third classroom building on the IU East campus was completed in May 1995. The building, which was dedicated as Middlefork Hall on June 12, 1996, houses the fine arts program and classrooms and
laboratories for the School of Education and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. In 2009, the building was renamed Tom Raper Hall in recogni-tion of the largest gift in IU East’s history.
The fourth building, dedicated as Springwood Hall in November 1999, houses the Graf Recreation Center, University College, the Chancellor’s and Campus Life offices, as well as general and spe-cialty classrooms. Additionally, the IU East Henry County Danielson Learning Center was dedicated in May 1999 to serve the citizens of Henry County. IU

IU East Cross Country CourseThe Indiana University
East cross country
programs compete and
train on the IU East
Cross Country Course.
The course is the IU
East athletic depart-
ment’s only on-cam-
pus competition facil-
ity. The first meets on
the course took place
in 2010. The Red Wolves cross
country program plans bring inter-
collegiate competitions to IU East
starting in 2011.
The course is located behind
Hayes Hall on the east side of the
campus. The course includes open
grass and wooded areas. The roll-
ing terrain and gradual uphill fin-
ish provide a good test for runners.
Runners spend a majority of a
race running around two giant
grass loops that form a figure-eight
around two fields. Spectators on
high ground can watch most of a
race as the runners wind around
the grass loops.
The course also includes a section
of wooded trails to challenge run-
ners midway through a race.
Competitions start in the northeast
section of the course, an area with
plenty of space for a large starting
field. Races finish near Hayes Hall,
giving runners immediate access
to shelter and locker
facilities.
Local high schools
will compete on the
course during the fall
of 2011. Coaches
and runners can get a
preview of the course
during the annual Run
With the Wolves 5K
each summer.
Coaches and runners
can contact IU East
cross country coach Pam Mertz at
765.966.5067 or [email protected]
to arrange for a tour of the course.
The improvements to the course
were possible thanks to the gen-
erous support of Reid Hospital &
Health Care Services.
Athletics SuiteThe Indiana University East ath-
letic department is housed in a

The Indiana University East Cross Country Course opened in the summer of 2010.
Can they finish strong?
The answer will determine the success of the
2011 Indiana University East men’s cross coun-
try team, which opens its fourth NAIA season on
Sept. 1
A solid group of returnees gets support from a six-
runner recruiting class, the most decorated group of
signees in IU East’s cross country history.
IU East coach Pam Mertz says the men’s team has
done everything she asked to get ready for the 2011
season.
The big question: Can the newcomers make the tran-
sition from the 5K high school cross country distance
to the 8K NAIA cross country races.
In other words, can they finish strong?
If so, this could be the best season in IU East men’s
cross country history, and the Red Wolves will send
multiple runners to the NAIA National Champion-
ships.
If not, this still shapes up as the deepest Red Wolves
teams yet, a team capable for contending for a
top-three finish in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Ath-
letic Conference meet.
“I can’t say enough good things about the good
things the guys have done,” Mertz said.
“Our team looks solid. More summer training was
logged this year and I look forward to getting the
season started.”
The rosterIU East returns four of the top five runners from the
2010 lineup.
Junior Justin Taylor (Waynesville, Ohio/Wilmington
College) was the Red Wolves’ No. 1 runner through-

out the 2010 season. He became the first IU East
men’s cross country runner to earn a national NAIA
Runner of the Week award with his performance at
the Kentucky Christian University Late Knights Run.
Sophomore Aaron Myers (Lynn, Ind./Randolph South-
ern High School) and redshirt sophomore Brandon Arnett (Lynn, Ind./Indiana University) both were IU
East’s No. 2 runner at times in 2010.
Redshirt senior Tim Lowman (Eaton, Ohio/Miami Uni-
versity) was a consistent No. 5 runner.
The holdovers will be pushed by six newcomers, all of
whom posted high school 5K times faster than the IU
East 5K school record.
“Our top five has numerous possibilities,” Mertz said.
Freshman Aaron Buchler (Genesee, Mich./Genesee
High School) was an all-state track and field runner
and a state cross country qualifier during his senior
year
Fellow freshmen Dylan Newman (Fountain City, Ind./
Northeastern High School), Jayke Thompson (Green-
field, Ind./Greenfield-Central High School) and Seth Prince (Albany, Ind./Delta High School) all helped
their teams qualify for an Indiana semistate race in
2010.
Freshman Taylor Gray (Richmond, Ind./Richmond
High School) is a two-time Indiana regional qualifier
who won the inaugural Wayne County Open meet on
the IU East course.
Freshman Isaac Wilson (Eaton, Ohio/Eaton High
School) helped his high school team advance to an
Ohio regional race.
“The guys are working very hard and putting them-
selves in position to have a good year,” Mertz said.
“If they can handle the transition from the 5K (high
school distance) to 8K (college distance), they can
have a very good season.”
The scheduleThe schedule sets up the Red Wolves for a strong
finish.
The season opens for the second consecutive year
with the Chick-fil-A Invitational at Asbury University
on Sept. 1.
The Red Wolves will race against the state’s best on
Sept. 16 during the Indiana Intercollegiates at Indi-
ana University.
IU East runners traditionally earn some of their best
finishes at the Earlham College Invitational, this year
on Oct. 1.
The Red Wolves expect fast times at the flat, fast
Wilmington College Invitational course on Oct. 14.
IU East is scheduled to host a meet on Oct. 8. The
Purdue University ‘B’ team is expected to take part
in the October meet.
The Red Wolves will build toward the Kentucky In-
tercollegiate Athletic Conference meet scheduled for

Nov. 5 at Yellow Creek Park in Owensboro, Ky., the
home course for Brescia University.
“We have a schedule that will prepare us for the big
meets at the end of the season,” Mertz said.
The goalsIU East was picked to finish fourth in the KIAC in a
preseason poll of the league’s coaches.
Mertz thinks the Red Wolves could finish in the
league’s top three.
IU East also hopes to send at least one runner - and
maybe the full team - to the NAIA National Champi-
onships.
“I like what I’ve seen from the guys and I really think
we could surprise some teams,” Mertz said.

Pam Mertz got the Indi-
ana University East cross
country program moving
in a hurry.
Mertz was appointed as
IU East men’s and wom-
en’s cross country coach
in August of 2009.
“We’re really happy we
could get somebody of
Pam’s caliber on board,” said IU East athletic direc-
tor Mark Hester. “We have a strong running commu-
nity in Richmond, and she will allow us to tap into
that interest and become a strong program.”
Mertz helped the Red Wolves make an impact at the
national level during her very first season.
Two IU East runners advanced to the 2009 NAIA
National Championships under Mertz’ direction. The
Red Wolves’ men’s and women’s cross country teams
both earned Scholar Team recognition from the NAIA.
Mertz’ recruiting efforts more than doubled the size
of the Red Wolves’ roster for an eventful 2010 sea-
son. The 2010 season included IU East’s first home
meet, first women’s invitational title and first NAIA
National Runners of the Week. The Red Wolves again
were represented at the NAIA National Champion-
ships.
The new goal is to win Kentucky Intercollegiate Ath-
letic Conference team championships and take full
IU East teams to the NAIA National Championships.
Mertz is a well-known figure in the Richmond area
running scene.
Mertz qualified for the Indiana state finals in cross
country and track and field as a high school athlete
at Hagerstown (Ind.) High School. She competed in
NCAA Division I cross country and indoor and out-
door track and field at Ball State University.
She assisted with the Hagerstown girls program in
1996 and 1997.
Mertz is a six-time champion of the Wayne County
Challenge, a local running series. She resides in the
Richmond area.

Brad Pitcher, a former
Richmond High School
cross country head
coach, was named as-
sistant coach for the
Indiana University East
men’s and women’s cross
country teams in the
summer of 2011.
Pitcher served on the
cross country and track
and field coaching staffs for Richmond Community
Schools for 16 years.
He coached seven Indiana state champions (five
outdoor and two indoor), four state runners-up and
13 all-state performers in cross country and track and
field.
“Brad only makes our cross country coaching staff
stronger,” said IU East athletic director Mark Hester.
“He is very knowledgeable about running in general
and running in this area in particular, so he will be a
valuable asset for our cross country programs.”
Pitcher ran cross country and track and field for four
years for Walnut Hills High School in Cincinnati. His
5K personal best in high school was 16:03.
Pitcher then ran cross country and track and field
for Earlham College. He graduated from Earlham in
1992.
His best career 5-mile/8K time was 26:51. He ran a
10K in 33:52.
He is an active runner who has competed in mara-
thons, half-marathons and countless 5K races.
He won his age group in the Wayne County Chal-
lenge local running series in 2010.
“We are lucky to get him,” IU East cross country
coach Pam Mertz said. “He has lots of coaching
experience, and he also is a runner, which is some-
thing that helps in recruiting.
“The program is expanding and we were needing
another coach, someone who could just pick things
up and go. He will really help us.”
Pitcher promises prospective Red Wolves “you will
get better.”
“I can’t promise you the world, but you will get bet-
ter,” Pitcher said. “We offer a lot of opportunities.
“We are going to build a team. You will be part of a
team atmosphere and improve together, individually
and as a team.”

Indiana University East’s athletes travel in style on this bus. The “Wolfmobile” design was recognized in an international competition in 2010.
A day-by-day look back at the 2010 Indiana Univer-
sity East men’s cross country season. The Red Wolves
hosted a meet for the first time and produced the
program’s first NAIA National Runner of the Week.
September 2 - And they’re off!The Indiana University East men’s cross country
team opens its third NAIA season with a fifth-place
finish out of seven teams on a toasty day at the
Asbury-Jessamine Special at Asbury University. The
5K race gives the Red Wolves a preview of the ter-
rain that will be used for the conference meet later
in the season. Justin Taylor (15th place) and Pat-
rick Smith (23rd place) finished in the top 25 and
earned t-shirts.
September 7 - A day of firstsJustin Taylor won the first intercollegiate meet on
the new Indiana University East Cross Country
Course, finishing the 5K race against Cincinnati
Christian University in 18:18. “That was the goal
going in, to get first,” said Taylor. “I’ve got to keep
improving and get my time better, but the goal going
in was to get first. I didn’t want to settle for any-
thing less in the first meet on our home course.”
It was the first home meet for IU East and the first
on-campus NAIA intercollegiate athletics event in IU
East history. IU East claimed five of the top seven
spots. CCU did not field a complete team, giving
IU East the team win in the first dual meet in the
cross country program’s history. IU East honored
Reid Hospital & Health Care Services, the course’s
signature sponsor, prior to the race. “A big thanks to
Reid,” Mertz said. “It was nice to see everybody out
here for our first meet.”
September 17 - Going the distanceIU East recorded the program’s best 8K team time to
date at the Indiana Intercollegiates at Purdue Uni-
versity. “It was their first 8K race of the season and
they took the challenge and worked together and ran
well,” Mertz said.
October 2 - Improvement across the boardAll five IU East runners posted their best times to
date at the Earlham College Invitational. Justin
Taylor finished 13th in 28:40 and earned a t-shirt.
Brandon Arnett finishes 19th in what proves to be a
season-best 29:49.
October 8 - Running with the bestIU East ran “good times” at the Shawnee State
University Invitational, even though the Red Wolves
trained hard right up to the day before the meet.
Shawnee State, which would finish fourth at the
NAIA National Championships, won the meet.
October 15 - Happy HomecomingJustin Taylor leads IU East with a season-best 8K
time of 28:24 at the Wilmington College Fall Clas-
sic. Taylor ran for Wilmington as a freshman. Patrick
Smith runs his season-best of 29:31.
October 30 - T-shirts and trophies!IU East finished second in the team standings at
the Kentucky Christian University Late Knights Run.
The second-place finish is the best team finish for
IU East’s men’s cross country program. Four of IU
East’s five runners received t-shirts for finishing in
the top 20. Justin Taylor finished third in 29:02.

Aaron Myers is fifth in a season-best 29:30. “This is
great,” Mertz said. “It’s just the beginning of what we
can win and what I expect us to win in the future.”
November 3 - National honorsJustin Taylor is named the NAIA National Men’s Cross
Country Runner of the Week based on his perfor-
mance at the Kentucky Christian University Late
Knights Run. Taylor and Carlie Rider - winner of the
NAIA National Women’s Cross Country Runner of the
Week honor - are the first NAIA athletes of the week
in IU East history. “I never thought I would get to
coach national runners of the week!” Mertz said. “I
am happy for Carlie and Justin. They are awesome
young runners who are a joy to coach.”
November 5 - The finishing kickIU East concludes the 2010 season with a fifth-place
finish in the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Confer-
ence meet on the hilly course at Asbury University in
Wilmore, Ky. Justin Taylor leads the Red Wolves with
