This is IU East
Indiana University East grew out of an extension established at Earlham College that was operated by Earlham and Indiana University. In 1967, the arrangement was expanded to include Purdue and Ball State universities and the extension became the Eastern Indiana Center of Earlham College.
In 1969, reflecting the community’s response to this opportunity to take state university courses at home, Richmond citizens formed an association known as Eastern Indiana Community College, Inc., to raise funds for the construction of a new campus. Following a successful campaign in which they raised over $1 million, members of the community col-lege organization, with the consent of the four education institutions involved in the center, requested Indiana University to establish a regional campus in Richmond to assume responsibility for the operation.
The Indiana General Assembly approved this plan, and on July 1, 1971, the East-ern Indiana Center for Earlham College became Indiana University East, the sixth campus in the Indiana University regional system. On October 3, 1972, ground was broken at the new campus site north of Richmond. The first building, an all-purpose academic facility named Whitewater Hall, was completed in late 1974 and dedicated February 23, 1975.
Ground was broken for a new library/classroom build-ing on August 8, 1990. It was dedicated as the Brice E. Hayes Hall on June 12, 1992.
The third classroom building on the IU East campus was completed in May 1995. The building, which was dedicated as Middlefork Hall on June 12, 1996, houses the fine arts program and classrooms and
laboratories for the School of Education and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. In 2009, the building was renamed Tom Raper Hall in recogni-tion of the largest gift in IU East’s history.
The fourth building, dedicated as Springwood Hall in November 1999, houses the Graf Recreation Center, University College, the Chancellor’s and Campus Life offices, as well as general and spe-cialty classrooms. Additionally, the IU East Henry County Danielson Learning Center was dedicated in May 1999 to serve the citizens of Henry County. IU

How high can they raise the bar?
“Raising the level and achieving success,” is the goal
for the 2011 Indiana University East women’s tennis
season, in the words of first-year Red Wolves coach
Erskine Ratchford.
IU East begins its second NAIA season Aug. 25 at
Midway College.
The Red Wolves went 1-13 during an inaugural
season made challenging with a midseason coaching
change and a shorthanded roster.
IU East built optimism for Season Two with a 2-5
mark during a short spring season and a strong re-
cruiting class.
“We are a young team, but the players’ hard work,
competitive desire and intense practice matches have
formed a strong team that will challenge and surprise
the college teams they will compete against this sea-
son,” Ratchford says.
The rosterIU East added a “great group” of recruits to a strong
nucleus of players who competed during the 2010-
11 school year.
“All of the players started the season in good condi-
tion and are continuing to work hard,” Ratchford
said.
Redshirt junior Courtney Ecker (Centerville, Ind./Indi-
ana Institute of Technology) will play at the top of the
Red Wolves’ singles and doubles lineup.
Ecker has great touch at the net and enough power
to match shots with opposing schools’ No. 1 play-
ers.
Redshirt junior Kristi Henderson (Cambridge City,
Ind./Lincoln High School) played No. 1 singles for
most of the 2010-11 school year and will benefit
from that experience in 2011-12.
Henderson’s all-court game makes her effective in
singles and doubles.
Sophomore Cheltsi Hinners (Centerville, Ind./Center-
ville High School) is perhaps IU East’s most im-
proved player after tying for the team lead in singles
wins from the No. 3 spot in 2010-11.
Hinners added consistency to her already power-
ful strokes and is ready to win in the top half of the
lineup.
Redshirt senior Brittany Bueter (Elkhart, Ind./Indi-
ana University) improved her forehand to go along
with an already strong backhand.
Bueter matched Hinners for the team lead in singles
wins in 2010-11 from the No. 2 position. She also
will benefit from a season playing against top-of-the-
lineup opponents.
Redshirt sophomore Catherine Penland made re-
markable improvement during the 2010-11 season
and adds to the Red Wolves’ depth in 2011-12.
Season PreviewRed Wolves ready to raise the bar in 2011
Continued on Page 9
All four of IU East’s recruits could crack the starting
lineup.
Freshman Emily Underwood (Milton, Ind./Lincoln
High School) made rapid progress during her final
high school season and the past summer and is
poised to play in the top half of IU East’s singles
lineup.
Underwood has consistent groundstrokes, good court
movement and can out-think many opponents.
Redshirt sophomore Paige Froman (Rushville, Ind./
Ball State University) made quick progress during
the preseason to solidify her spot in the singles and
doubles lineups.
Froman is one of the Red Wolves’ most powerful play-
ers with a big serve and groundstrokes.
Freshman Kara Haynes (Brookville, Ohio/Brookville
High School) is a consistent player with good foot-
work and lots of match experience.
Haynes should enjoy success from the No. 5 and No.
6 singles spots.
Freshman Katie Pyle (Celina, Ohio/Celina High
School) will redshirt the 2010-11 season but will
give the Red Wolves a boost, particularly in doubles,
in the very near future.
“Just like the Red Wolf pack, the strength of this
team is the number and quality of the team mem-
bers,” Ratchford said.
Ratchford is officially a first-year coach, but he is no
stranger to the Red Wolves pack. Ratchford served
as a volunteer coach during the 2011-12 school
year.
The scheduleThe Red Wolves will play four home matches at Glen
Miller Park in Richmond.
IU East’s home opener is Aug. 28 against longtime
Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference cham-
pion Indiana University Southeast.
Most of the Red Wolves’ matches are against KIAC
opponents. The KIAC moved to a double round robin
format and added an eighth women’s tennis program
(St. Louis College of Pharmacy), meaning IU East
had to reserve 13 match dates for KIAC opponents.
The Red Wolves will play non-conference matches
against NCAA Division II opponents Oakland City
University (twice) and Central State University and
one match against crosstown opponent Earlham Col-
lege.
The KIAC tournament is Oct. 29-30 in Owensboro,
Ky.
The goalsRatchford lists three primary goals for the 2011-12
season:
1) Increase competitive capability and challenge all
opponents

2) Achieve a winning season
3) Forge a ‘team’ to build an ongoing and established
program
The Red Wolves were picked to finish fifth in the
eight-team KIAC in a preseason poll of league coach-
es, but Ratchford thinks IU East could be the sur-
prise of the conference.
“This will be the first year the women’s tennis team
will have a full roster of players to fill all spots in
singles and doubles,” Ratchford said. “And all of
the players are strong in playing skills and will be
competitive in the coming matches to be played this
season. This will provide the spectators and Red Wolf
fans with a competitive and athletic women’s ten-
nis team that will produce entertaining and exciting
sporting events.”

Erskine Ratchford, a
nationally ranked ten-
nis player who resides in
Richmond, was named
men’s and women’s ten-
nis head coach at Indi-
ana University East on
Aug. 1, 2011.
“I am excited about the
upcoming tennis season
and feel that we have a
great group of men and women players who look to
be competitive this year. It is a privilege to have the
opportunity to work with and lead these men and
women in the upcoming matches,” Ratchford said.
“I will do my best to properly represent, instruct,
direct and develop a winning program that is reflec-
tive of the successful traditions of the other sports
programs at IU East.”
Ratchford has ranked in the top 100 in the nation
and the top 10 in the Midwest in his age group.
He served as a volunteer coach for IU East during the
2010-11 season.
“The only thing that could make this news better is if
we could also let Erskine play in our lineup, because
he is that good of a player” said IU East assistant
athletic director Kyle Wright.
“He developed a strong rapport with our players last
season and is the perfect person to push our teams to
a level of contending for conference championships
and national tournament appearances on a regular
basis.”
Ratchford is a North Carolina State University alum-
ni. He previously was Director of Engineering for
Marvel Industries in Richmond.
“IU East and east central Indiana can be a hotbed
for tennis because of its location between several
strong tennis communities,” Ratchford said, noting
IU East’s proximity to cities like Dayton, Indianapolis
and Cincinnati.
“Players who come to IU East have a great opportu-
nity to take advantage of the resources that are avail-
able to tennis players in this area.”

A day-by-day look back at the 2010 Indiana Univer-
sity East women’s tennis season. It was the inaugu-
ral NAIA season for the Red Wolves women’s tennis
program.
September 9 - The opening chapter begins! The new Indiana University East women’s tennis pro-
gram faces crosstown foe Earlham College in the first
match in the program’s history. Experience won out
as Earlham posted a 9-0 win. IU East has five players
on its first-year roster and defaults the No. 6 singles
and No. 3 doubles matches, as it will do throughout
the season. “For this being our first match I have
nothing but good feelings,” said IU East coach Mike
Sherer. “I’m proud of the girls for giving 100 per-
cent effort. It’s great to have our first match ever. I’m
proud that’s been accomplished.”
September 13 - Conference debutIU East hosts Midway College in its first Kentucky
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match. The Red
Wolves fall 9-0, but Cheltsi Hinners and Brittany
Bueter play a close match at No. 1 doubles.
September 14 - A surprise shake-upMike Sherer resigns as men’s and women’s tennis
coach, effective immediately. Sherer stepped down
for personal reasons. “We thank Mike for doing the
heavy lifting to get our tennis programs off of the
ground,” said IU East athletic director Mark Hester.
“We wish him nothing but success in the future.” IU
East assistant athletic director and sports informa-
tion director Kyle Wright coaches the team for the
remainder of the 2010 season.
September 17-18 - A taste of successEach member of the Indiana University East wom-
en’s tennis team picked up at least one individual
victory during a two-day, four-match trip to Kentucky.
The Red Wolves lost all four matches, but recorded
several individual milestones. Cheltsi Hinners and
Brittany Bueter recorded the first match victory in IU
East tennis history with a No. 1 doubles win at Berea
College on Sept. 17. Catherine Penland picked up
the first singles win in the IU East program’s history
with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles against Brescia
University on Sept. 18. Kristi Henderson became the
first IU East player to earn a single-doubles sweep
when she won both of her matches against Brescia
despite a foot injury. The Red Wolves won four of
seven contested matches against Brescia, but lost
the match 5-4 because of the two defaults required
with a five-player roster.
October 2 - Closer than the score indicatedIU East lost 9-0 against then-unbeaten Asbury Uni-
versity, but the points and games were much closer
than they were in the first meeting between the Red
Wolves and the Eagles. The match finishes just be-
fore rain moves into the Richmond area.
October 10 - A look at the leadersIU East drops its final home match of its inaugural
season 9-0 against eventual conference champion
Indiana University Southeast.
October 16 - A close callIU East falls 5-4 against Berea College in the second
of two matches played at Indiana University South-

east. The Red Wolves fell 7-0 against eventual con-
ference champion IU Southeast earlier in the day. IU
East won four of the seven contested matches against
Berea and came one third set supertiebreak from
pulling out a team victory. Brittany Bueter and Cheltsi
Hinners won their No. 1 doubles match and also won
their singles matches.
October 20 - A hard hitIU East falls 9-0 at Midway, the hardest-hitting team
in the conference.
October 23 - Winners!IU East defeats Alice Lloyd College 5-4 in the first
of back-to-back matches against the Eagles at Berea
College. “There would have been no justice in the
universe if the ladies had gone through this season
without enjoying the reward of a team victory,” said
Red Wolves coach Kyle Wright. Lizzie Shepherd
claims the pivotal No. 4 singles match with a 10-5
win in a third set supertiebreak. IU East falls 5-4
in the rematch later in the day. The Red Wolves win
nine of the 14 contested matches on the day. Cath-
erine Penland finishes the day with a 3-0 record in
singles and doubles.
October 29 - The opening chapter concludesIU East completes its first women’s tennis season
with a 9-0 loss against No. 2 seed Asbury University
in the quarterfinals of the Kentucky Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference tournament in Berea, Ky. The
