A survey by the Electrical Safety Councilrevealed that of the 39 per cent of consumerswho had had work carried out, less than halfhad received a certificate confirming that ithad been completed satisfactorily.
More than 50 per cent of those questionedwere unaware that there was any kind ofregulation relating to common electrical jobsaround the home, such as fitting a new powershower, adding new sockets or installinggarden lights.
The ESC is encouraging householders tomake their homes safer by installing RCDs -residual current devices - whichinstantaneously cut off the current whenthere is an electrical malfunction. They arepotential life-savers especially when usingmowersand hedge trimmers
The hard work lurkingbeneath the surfaceGARDEN ponds and water features willneed topping up and tidying over the nextmonth or so.
Experts at the Royal Horticultural Societyadvise using a spray attachment on the hose pipewhich will aerate the water and provide a health-ier environment for the fish.
Clearing debris lurking in the depths of thepond will reduce weed growth, improve the waterquality and prevent the release of toxins thatcould harm fish or wildlife.
Dead foliage and blooms should be removedfrom waterlilies and other aquatic plants. It isalso a good idea to cut back any marginal plantsthat are getting out of hand and to skim blanketand floating weeds.
Fitting nets or safety grilles over a pond is anessential safety precaution in gardens whereyoung children play, and will also preventleaf-fall in the pond. In the event of a heatwave,when sultry temperatures are forecast overnight,
water features should be left on, as oxygen levelswill be lower.
A dry spell is ideal for catching up on paintingand preserving jobs. Sheds, fences and gardenfurniture will all benefit from a fresh summercoat. Newly planted trees and shrubs often needmuch more water than we might expect, so keep
checking on them and don't let them dryout.Plants in baskets can be cut back beforefeeding, which can encourage new growth andhelp revive any displays which are starting tolook tired. You can also take cuttings of patioand container plants for next year.
The RHS recommends that most perennialweeds are best dealt with in the summer, whilethey are in active growth. Digging out oftenworks, but applying a weedkiller can be morepractical, particularly for large areas.
Lawns should be mown regularly. In hotweather, set the mower at a slightly higher levelthan normal. July is usually the latest time toapply a liquid summer lawn fertiliser, especially ifa spring feed was not given. A soluble feed andweed product may be useful if there are weedspresent in the lawn.
