Indoor positioning system

1 An indoor positioning system (IPS) is a network of devices used to wirelessly locate objects or people inside a building. Generally the products offered under this term do not

comply with the International standard ISO/IEC 24730 on real-time locating systems

(RTLS). There is currently no de facto standard for an IPS systems design, so

deployment has been slow. Nevertheless, there are several commercial systems on the

market.

1 Global navigation satellite systems (GPS or GNSS) are generally not suitable to

establish indoor locations, since microwaves will be attenuated and scattered by roofs, walls and other objects. However, in order to make

positioning signals ubiquitous (can be obtained everywhere), integration

between GPS and indoor positioning can be made.
