Storage

Care in storing and handling radi-ographic films is extremely important.Sealed packages of film are affectedby heat; opened packages by humidityas well as heat.

Ideally, store all film packages in anarea properly shielded from pene-trating radiation and at a tempera-ture of 10 to 24°C (50 to 75°F ).Store opened packages at 30 to 50percent relative humidity .

Store processed radiographs at 16 to27°C (60 to 80°F ) and 30 to 50 percentrelative humidity.

Storage, Handling, and Safelight Information

Safelight RecommendationsSafelights provide illumination for personnel to worksafely in the darkroom without fogging the exposed orunexposed film.

For darkroom illumination that will not harm industrial x-ray film:• Use a filter such as KODAK Safelight Filter 6B /brown, with a KODAK Safelight Lamp. Frequentlycheck the lamp and filter for cracks that would allowwhite light to leak through and fog the film.

• Use a standard pearl 15-watt bulb in the safelightlamp. Heat from bulbs of higher wattage may damagethe fragile safelight filter.

• Position the safelight lamp at least 1.2 meters (4 feet)from the work area.

• Do not expose x-ray film to safelight for more than oneminute.

• Always place the safelight filter in the housing so thatthe label is right-reading. If the label is wrong-reading,the filter will not have as long a life expectancy.

HandlingPlace packages of film on edge to avoid pressure-marking the film, and so that the date is clearly visible.Use older dated film first.

Handle radiographic film carefully toavoid physical strains caused by pres-sure, creasing, buckling and friction. Donot draw film rapidly from the carton, film holder, or cassette, nor handle it inany way that could cause static electri-cal discharges.

Handle film packages with interleaving paper with thesame care as those without interleaving paper. Whenhandling radiographic film, cleanliness is essential.

Relative Exposure Factors of KODAK INDUSTREX FilmsThe relative film speeds in these tables are based on matched radiographs at a density of 2.0 above gross fog.Use these values as starting points for calculating exposures. Because of rounding, averaging procedures, differ-ences in radiation quality, processing conditions, etc., differences may occur between these values and specificpractical situations.

KODAK NDT Exposure CalculatorThe KODAK NDT Exposure Calculator is designed foruse with iridium and steel to provide the proper expo-sure, based upon material thickness, distance, sourcestrength and exposure factors and is available fromyour local Kodak Area Manager.

KODAK INDUSTREX Calibrated Step TabletThis tablet is intended for use in the calibration of densitometers and similar equipment used in making diffusetransmission density measurements. The tablet is exposed on INDUSTREX M Film, perhaps the most consistentindustrial x-ray film on the market today.

The strip has 17 density steps ranging from less than 0.20 to greater than 4.20. Each strip is calibrated accordingto the ISO Standard for Diffuse Visual Transmission Density and in accordance with ANSI PH2.19-1990, ISO 5-2:1991, ANSI PH2.18, and ISO 5-2:1984. All density measurements are made within a circle 3 mm in diameter atthe center of each step with the strip identification number facing the densitometer diffuser.

The density values given are traceable to NIST through traceable calibrations of the instrumentation utilized in thecalibration process. This process was additionally verified by measurement of an NIST X-ray Film Step Tablet,Standard Reference Material 1001.

Artifacts parallel to the direction of film travel:

Surface drying streaks a. Under-replenished fixer a. Increase the fixer replenishment rate.• narrow wavering bands b. Dryer is too hot b. Set the dryer at the recommended• mottled, washed out temperature or at the temperature• randomly spaced required to just dry the films.• seen by reflected light

Delay streaks Chemical build-up on the developer re-wet Clean the re-wet roller. Raise the • narrow bands (widths vary) roller solution level in the developer tank.• randomly sized• plus density• from the leading edge through only part of the film

Artifacts occurring randomly on the film surface:

Wet pressure Exhausted or contaminated developer • Check for kinked replenishment lines.• plus density • Increase the rate of developer• faded blotches replenishment.• overall graininess • Drain the developer tank and fill it with• decreased contrast fresh chemicals.

• Check the condition of the replenisher(age, oxidation, etc.).

Soft emulsion Inadequate hardening in the fixer step • Increase the rate of fixer replenishment.• scratches on the emulsion • Check for correct mixing volumes (do• “pick-off” or “orange-peel” not dilute).

• Check that the fixer is not exhausted;replace with fresh fixer if necessary.

Radiographic Equivalence Factor

The equivalence factor is used to calculate the equivalent thickness of steel. The equivalence factor for copper, from the chart below, at 220 kV is 1.4. To calculate the equivalent steel thickness, multiply the thickness of cop-per by the equivalence factor. For example, 0.5 inches of copper is equivalent to 0.5 x 1.4 = 0.7 inches of steel.Use a steel chart to determine the exposure for 0.7 inches of steel at 220 kV.
