Background and GoalsThe Life Sciences Series was launched in 2014. Its first edition in 2015 will, for the sixth time, focus on indus-trial biotechnology and the bio-economy. It is published in English and will appear in February 2015.

The bio-economy is becom-ing visible: in the European transport sector in 2013, 4.7% of the energy consu-med came from renewable sources, with a goal of 10% by 2020. Bioplastics are also taking off: the Institute for Bioplastics and Biocompo-sites expects to see global capacity increase five-fold to over 6,000 tonnes by 2017. The ”Halbzeitkonfe-renz Bioökonomie” demonstrated that ”Biobased” is already part of our everyday lives; bicycles, lubricants and wedding gowns are now being made from renewable raw materials.

The EU is positioning itself for the post-oil era. Scandinavia‘s wood and paper industry is a major source of raw materials, Belgium and the Nether-lands have the most bio-refineries and pilot faci-lities; Macedonia is planning to build a large cellu-lose bio-refinery with DuPont and Ethanol-Europe – Investors should start paying attention now. The purchase of Butalco by the global market leader in yeast production Lesaffre shows that early exits are possible. Those who fail to take part will miss out on the likely boom.

MarketBioplastics are not confined to soda bottles, packaging or wall dowels. FourMotors, with Ger-man singer Smudo at the wheel of the bio-racing

car, are taking pole position. DSM and Daimler are making chassis components from castor beans, Reverdia is offering bio-succinic acid for sustainable resins and coatings, Evonik is producing bio- polyamide, and Evolva biotech vanillin.

POET-DSM, Abengoa and DuPont are building cellu-lose refineries for in excess of USD 700 million with an annual capacity of 80 billion gallons in America‘s corn belt. The technology is flowing to the raw materials.

Capital and Stock ExchangePrivate Investments remain a bottleneck factor in Europe. The raising of USD 40 million of equity capital by agro-biotechs SGB and Fulcrum Bioenergy contrasts with the EUR 8.1million round of financing by enzyme specialists Direvo in Europe. France and other countries are sup-porting R&D with tax relief. Under Horizon 2020, ”Synergistic Funding” is financing projects with a range of funding pots.

Success StoriesBulk consumers are starting pilot projects and establishing value-added networks. Lufthansa is testing Amyris‘ bio-kerosene farnesene. Clariant is successfully testing its second generation fuel in Mercedes vehicles. BASF is also producing bio-succinic acid in a joint venture with Corbion Purac.

Key Topics By-product power sourcesWaste streams of lignocellulosic biomass are a new resource. But are energy-crop monocultures sustainable? What happens to whey, fl ue gas, pulp residues and other waste products? Europe already uses ¾ of its biomass, where do competitions arise? Which recyclable materials can be isolated directly, where is fermentation the only option? Is Bio-Naphta the cost-effective drop-in solution?

Factories of the FutureUntil now, research and development has primari-ly taken place in Europe and the United States, yet, considerable biomass is available in countries like Brazil, Indonesia and Russia. Are new industries developing in these countries? What cooperative relationships, business relationships and logistics networks are being developed? Which biotechnolo-gy strategies are countries like Norway, Canada and Malaysia pursuing? Will mega-clusters such as BIG-C connect them?

FinancingAccording to the European Investment Bank (EIB) there aren‘t any fi nancial bottlenecks in Europe. If

this is true, where are the multi-million investments hiding? Will the low-interest rates contribute to ad-ded private investments? Where is the round tab-le for the bio-economy, bringing banks, companies and policy-makers together? Is shale-gas deterring investors? Which classes of molecules are being forced out, which are being fostered? Will the focus on molecule specialities remain solely on cosmetics and food?

Further TopicsSuccess stories, technical papers, interviews with experts, market overviews and statistics in ”Indus-trial Biotechnology all refl ect the current times. Focusing on technology, fi nancing and investment, this edition reports on the latest trends in indust-rial biotechnology in the customary, in-depth way. Stock-exchange listed as well as small and medium sized businesses and investment forecasts all stand together on an equal footing to kick-start a wide-ranging debate on the further development of the biotech sector. At the same time a forum for colla-borations is created with profi les.

The Life Science SeriesLife Sciences, have been a signifi cant sector and technological focus of GoingPublic Magazin for around 16 years. Apart from cover stories, focus areas and transaction reporting (rounds of fi nancing, stock market launches, mergers, acquisitions etc.), up to fi ve specials appear annually. The GoingPublic Life Sciences Series was launched in 2014. Four issues will be published in 2015: “Industrial Biotech-nology“ (No. 1, 1/2015, 21.2., engl., approx. 64 p., 6th year), “Personalized Medicine“ (No. 2/2015, 18.4. approx. ca. 48 S., 5th year), “Biotechnology“ (No. 3/2015, 12.9., approx. 190 p., 17th year) and “Health“ (No. 4/2015, 31.10., approx. 64 p., 9th year.).

LifeSciencesUpdate supplements the offer since March 2013 as a monthly digital newsletter with editorial highlights, news, event tips, previews, reviews, cross links and more. The website www.goingpublic.de/lifesciences shows the range of editorial contributions on the internet. Here you can fi nd advance reports from the magazines, but also company reports about rounds of fi nancing, investment trends, mergers and acquisitions (M&A) and (patent) law topics, studies and events. The mission: cross media connection (magazine – web – event) of life sciences with knowledge and net-works relating to company fi nancing and the capital market.
