• Long ago people lived on farms.• They had no machines to help them

and they had lots of jobs to do.• Everyone had to help, the Mums

and Dads and the children.• Other people came to work on the

farm. They lived in the same house too.

• Then they invented machines to help to do the jobs.

• Now they did not need so many people to work on the farm.

• People began to move to the towns to work in the factories.

• The factories needed lots of copper and tin to make things.

• Some people became miners. They went down into the dark and dusty mines.

• It was very dangerous.

• Men and boys worked in the mines.• The ladies and girls and small boys

worked on top of the mine.• What jobs do you think they did?

• At the end of the day they would have a long walk home in their wet clothes.

• There were no cars or buses.

• Sometimes children went to school.• They wrote on slates• They had to copy the teacher’s

writing

• Can you see the cane and the hat for people who were being silly?

• Do you think it was fun being a child in the Industrial Revolution?
