EN. AZLI HILMI BIN FAUDZI@MD RAWIconsturction departmentIn construction department, they responsible to construct substation and overhead pole. Usually, contractor will do the initial work like dig hole for joining, places the switchgear or transformer, place the pole and the other work. Apart from that, TNB also responsible to shut down the substation that involved in the construction before the contractor start doing their job to avoid accident from happening. The important work in construction job is joining cable to make sure that the new substation will get the supply to operate . Furthermore joining cable is done when there is breakdown which happened because the cable is damaged.

Breakdown of cable

Low Voltage Overhead LinesPresently all new lines are constructed using aluminum. Copper conductors are used only for repair of copper lines.

Advantages of Aluminum :cheaper than copper lighter and easier to handleless scraper value, not prone to theft

Disadvantages of Aluminum :softer than copper and required careful handlingoxidizes easily making connections more difficult

Poles For LV Overhead LineFour types of poles are used in the TNB :Wood PolesPre-stressed Spun Concrete polesReinforced Concrete Poles

The functions of poles are:To support conductors and accessories such as fuses and cable boxesThe safety clearance from the ground, building are maintained

The standard lengths are:10 meter- for HT cable (HV)9 meter - for overhead mains (LV)

High Voltage CableThe 11kV supply that feeds into switchgear comes in the XLPE cable (HV cable). In one cable, have three cores (R, Y, B) which is connected to the three terminals of incoming feeder of the switchgear. From the switchgear, the supply goes to the HV side of the transformer through XLPE cable

SITE VISIT

Site visits are essential before planning starts. The following can be obtained from site visits.a) Sources of supplyb) Types of loadsc) Site information on:TreesGround conditions and terrainOther services on site such as telephone lines and water mains.Drains, stream, ponds etc

Metering unitType Of Metering Used To Consumer :a) Ordinary power consumer meter (OPC meter) b) Large Power consumer meter (LPC meter)

Type of meteringThere are three types of metering1. Single phases metering (OPC meter). The current value uses in fuse about 10-50 A. Use two wire connected from supply to meter board consumerHaving one cut out and one neutral link

2. Three phase metering (OPC meter)The current value uses in fuse about 10-60 A. Used four wire connected from supply to meter board consumerHaving one neutral link and three cut out

3. Large power consumer meter (LPC meter). Use digital electronic meterUse current transformer
