William Ruh, CEO of GE Digital, said yesterday during his keynote at Congress that the last decade was more about the consumer internet. “But by and large if you look at the industrial world, it really didn’t take advantage of any of this technology in a meaningful way.” The reason for this shift, he said, is that for 20 years from 1990, we saw 4 per cent productivity gains every year in the industrial world. “Then 2011 happened, and since then we have had 1 per cent productivity gain. So if you are an industrial business today you are trying to get back to that 4 per cent productivity,” Ruh said. Chuck Robbins, Cisco CEO, agreed, noting that almost every company in the world is thinking about how to use technology to fundamentally change their business models for the future. Robbins believes we’re on the front end of the most phenomenal technology revolution that we’ve ever seen. “The pace of change is something we’ve never witnessed before,” he said For example, digitisation will boost the number of connected devices from 18 billion to 50 billion by 2020, said Robbins, and to hundreds of billions of connections in the decade after that, so the opportunities are vast. GE’s Ruh warned that if industrial companies do not embrace digitisation, they will not be able to compete in the next decade. If they can figure out how to capture the efficiency benefits, “this is probably the biggest opportunity we have seen in two to three decades”, he added. While the last decade was all about the consumer and enterprise internet, “the next decade is the industrial internet”, he said. Robbins noted that governments in many cases are leading the thought process and developing digitisation strategies to address everything from economic growth to job creation to more efficient travel. He pointed to initiatives Cisco is carrying out in China, India, France, Italy, Spain and the UK. “When it comes to healthcare, education and other citizen services, these country leaders actually get it. They are driving a very aggressive agenda, which is great to see.” Companies are also starting to recognise they have a societal obligation to re-skill people being disrupted by automation technologies. “The good news is that we’re getting ahead of the discussion about what we need to do, either retrain employees, so they are better equipped for the jobs associated with this revolution, or educate them to do different jobs,” he said. The once fast-rising firm missed its 2015 handset target of 80 million by 12 per cent and also reportedly failed to reach its $1 billion target for revenue from internet services. The flagship models – which will be early users of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 – are targeted at both the domestic Chinese market, which has been slowing, as well as international markets – although India was the only one name-checked. Xiaomi VP Hugo Barra said the new Snapdragon chipset makes the devices “insanely fast”. The 820 reportedly is twice as fast as the Snapdragon 810 and offers “double the performance with half the power consumption”. The Mi5 Pro comes with a 3D ceramic body that Barra claims is extremely durable and wear-resistant, but is not common in devices because it is 75 per cent more expensive than 3D glass (which is used for the Mi5). Chinese smartphone playerXiaomi yesterday unveiled itslatest flagship smartphones,

the Mi5 and Mi5 Pro, as it attemptsto turn around its fortunes aftermissing its handset target last year.

Karim Khoja, Roshan CEO,urged the global communitynot to forget the ongoing

connectivity issues in Afghanistan,in light of recent problems in otherparts of the world.

Khoja founded Roshan in 2003and is one of six providers in thecountry, and the company now hasmore than 7 million subscribers.

In his Mobile is Digital Inclusionkeynote, Khoja opened up on someof the issues that exist in operatingin Afghanistan, a country thatcontinues to be plagued by politicalinstability.

“We have a bomb almost everyday in Kabul, and it causeswidespread devastation,” he said.“But the good news is our networksstand up, emergency services getthrough and people can call theirfamilies – that’s our version ofdigital inclusion.”

Khoja also praised some of hismain rivals in the country, includingEtisalat, MTN and Afghan Wirelessfor deciding to invest in the country.

And in a subtle hint, he suggestedthat global internet giants shouldalso help the cause.

“If it wasn’t for Roshan, and theother three operators investingmore than $2.4 billion in thecountry, Facebook, WhatsApp, theUN, and people at MasterCard,wouldn’t be able to do anything inAfghanistan,” he said.

“It’s important to understandwhat mobile operators invest in,and we do need a return on our investment.”

Roshan CEO opens up onAfghanistan challenges

Martin Sorrell, chiefexecutive of advertisinggroup WPP, bemoaned

some shortcomings in his industrythat mean mobile advertising is stillnot taking off as much as it should.

“Probably the mobile revolutionhas not registered yet withcompanies, although it might haveregistered more ironically with thelong tail than it has with largercompanies. But it still has notpenetrated companies to the

degree it should have,” he saidduring the afternoon keynote,Mobile is Commerce yesterday.

He referenced research byanalyst Mary Meeker whichshowed an underinvestment by theadvertising industry in mobile,alongside an overinvestment inanalogue newspapers andmagazines.

As to why, Sorrell looked insidethe advertising industry for anexplanation:

“Some of the things are to dowith the industry we are part of. We

haven’t adapted. When people talkabout creative industries they aretalking about Don Draper [of MadMen], they are not talking about thenew definitions.”

There are many “creativepeople” such as software engineersinside the industry too, he pointedout, as an example of changingroles. It’s a question of definition.“We haven’t contextualisedcorrectly yet. A lot of what we see,and not in mobile but digital, is notcontextualised effectively as itshould be.”

He connected this shortcomingwith a rise in talk of adblockers atCongress. “The launch of anotheradblocker and people are obviouslythinking hard about it,” he said.

HPE wins Swiss,Argentine telcodealsHewlett Packard Enterprise(HPE) won network dealswith Swisscom and TelecomArgentina’s TelecomPersonal. It will supply NFVtechnology to Swisscom andexpand and upgrade part ofthe Argentine company’score network.

Veniam,Qualcomm teamfor demoVeniam and Qualcomm aredemonstrating aconnectivity platform forconnected cars and smartcities at MWC. Veniam’sproducts combine DSRC(dedicated short-range)connected vehicletechnology, 4G, Wi-Fi andmesh networking to providehandoff between networkinfrastructure and vehicles.

Barra also said the companyachieved a “technical breakthrough”with the rear camera, featuring four-axis optical image stabilisation (theiPhone has two), which reduces blurwhen the phone is moved whiletaking photos.

The rear camera has a 16MPsensor and a sapphire glass lens.The front camera is 4MP, the sameas the Mi Note. It also comes withQualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0,which is said to be 20 per centfaster than the previous generation.

Ian Fogg, head of mobile at IHSTechnology, said the Mi5 has“innovative design elements and thevery latest hardware technology”,but Xiaomi needs to do more withits software ecosystem tosignificantly grow its businessbeyond its home market of China.

“Until Xiaomi tackles thefundamental international issueswith its portfolio, its shipmentgrowth will continue to be low,”he said.

With its new “subdued design”,this is the first time a Xiaomi devicecomes with a home button. It alsohas a fingerprint sensor. The Mi5($262) and the Mi5 Pro ($354) willbe available in China from 1 Marchand will come to India and othermarkets soon.

The smartwatch market will“increase exponentially” inthe years to 2018, hitting $20

billion in revenue and eating intothe market for health and fitnesstrackers, according to GfK dataprepared for Mobile World Daily.

Smartwatches will generate morethan 50 per cent of the demand forwearables at the end of the period,with one smartwatch sold for every

ten smartphones.Assuming that more vendors will

enter the market, increasedcompetition could lead to cheapermodels with added functionality,and smartwatches could“eventually cannibalise health andfitness trackers”.

However, before that happens, thegrowth in health and fitness trackersis expected to continue, driven bylower price points and increasedadoption among healthcare providers

and in the workplace, with more than100 million units being sold in 2018.

For 2016, the report forecaststhat 50 million smartwatch unitswill be sold in North America, 33million in China, 17 million inWestern Europe and 16 million indeveloped APAC, a shift from 2015,when developed APAC made up 81per cent of the total market.

Locators, which track theposition of the wearer, are verypopular in China, where theyaccount for 30 per cent ofwearables sold last year. However,unless they move into new markets,they are expected to be slowlycanniballised by other devices.

Uptick in smartwatchpopularity – GfK

Facebook maintains that itsefforts to bring the internet toa much wider audience are

progressing, as it focuses on tacklingthe issues of cost, access andawareness which remain the biggestchallenges to adoption today.

Yael Maguire, Facebook’sengineering director and head of itsConnectivity Lab, told Mobile WorldDaily: “We’re tackling thesechallenges in different ways –

addressing issues of affordabilityand awareness with Free Basics andthe challenge of access toinfrastructure with some of the newtechnology we’re working on in theConnectivity Lab.”

“In the Connectivity Lab, we’reworking on technologies like lasercommunication systems, solarpowered aircraft and satellites that aremore appropriate for remote regionswith different population densities.”

Maguire confirmed that it wastesting laser communications in

real-world conditions, but declinedto offer any update to earlierreports that the technology wasdelivering data at 10s of Gb/s –approximately 10x faster than theprevious industry state-of-the-art.

Facebook is still in the early daysof testing its aircraft technologyand lasers, confirmed Maguire, “butyou can expect us to have more toshare on progress on those in thecoming months.”

“Eventually, the hope is that ourlaser communications system can beused to connect our aircraft with eachother and with the ground, making itpossible to create a stratosphericnetwork that can extend to the mostremote regions of the world.”

The company is reported to havebeen testing a lightweight drone thesize of a small commercial airlineras part of ambitious plans to bringthe internet to remote areas isthrough a network of solar-powered internet drones.

Early days forFacebook’s lasercomms trials,admits exec

Personalisation and optimisingservices for specific targetgroups are both crucial for

the mobile sector, especially giventhe trend of on-demand services,according to Kakao’s chief businessofficer, John Jung.

“Service providers capable ofcapturing both aspects ofpersonalisation will grasp the heartsof users,” said the Kakao executive,who will be speaking in today’sPersonalisation and On-DemandContent session.

Last year, the South Koreancompany got approval to set up anonline-only bank and it is “busy settingup the entity, figuring out employmentconcerns, security issues andequipment”. It will apply for finalapproval in the second half of this year,in the hope of launching a service bythe end of 2016 or early 2017.

“Kakao Bank will provide bankingperfectly suited for today's mobile

lifestyle and will offer financialservices to those underserved bypre-existing banks,” Jung said.

In the meantime, the companyhas its hands full with services likeKakao Taxi, which has attractedmore than 20,000 drivers – close to80 per cent of registered cabdrivers in its home country – sinceit launched in March 2015, and hasrecorded 70 million accumulatedcalls as of January 2016.

“We will continue to work onshifting the habits of our users toexpand the user base, while expandingto other services such as a premiumtaxi service called Kakao Taxi Black in2016,” said the executive.

“Kakao has proved itself multipletimes as a habit-changer over time,from the way people communicateto the way people consumecontent,” he continued.

Just last month, the companyunveiled a deal to buy a controllingstake in South Korea’s leadingmusic streaming player, Loen

Entertainment, for $1.6 billion.The buyer believes “music is a

powerful content genre in the mobileera, one which can set trends thatinfluence the global pop culture. Bycombining Kakao’s variousplatforms and content services andLoen’s leading music content, weexpect tremendous synergy thatcould establish a foundation forfuture global expansion”.

Commenting on operating inSouth Korea, he said it is “one ofthe few countries where adomestic search engine still carriessignificant dominance overGoogle” and believes a localpartner is of “utmost importance”for building a successful businessin the country.

He said advanced infrastructure,high ARPU and population densitymake South Korea open to newopportunities, although culturalsensitivity and language barriersact as challenges, especially forforeign businesses.

Energy company Shell’sinvolvement in thedevelopment of connected

cars is a “natural fit”, according toDavid Bunch, global VP of retailmarketing at the company.

Shell is currently in the processof co-engineering a concept citycar in collaboration withautomotive firm Gordon MurrayDesign and engine specialist GeoTechnology, pledging to come up“with some solutions to the world’senergy and mobility challenges”. Itis also developing mobile paymentservices directly from in carscreens, among other innovations.

Speaking to Mobile World Daily,Bunch believes there won’t be “manytechnology developments as excitingand transformative of the connectedcar”, and said he saw the company’srole in the space as providing supportfor platforms that matter to customers.

“With the imminent introduction ofautonomous cars, consumers will belooking for smarter ways to ensuretheir vehicles remain charged orfuelled,” said Bunch. “That’s where

our work in connectivity comes in.”With autonomous cars widely

expected to run on electricity, andnot internal combustion engines,questions have also been raisedabout the future demand for fuel,one of Shell’s primary resources.

Bunch addressed the issue,stating that Shell wants to play anactive role ensuring both “energyand car manufacturing industrieswork together to develop possiblesolutions for customers”.

Shell drivingsupport forconnected carapplications

BlackBerry acquired UKsecurity firm Encription,bolstering a move into

cybersecurity consulting that wasalso announced here at MWC.

The company has created aProfessional CyberSecurityServices practice which will offerorganisations consulting services,tools and best practice.

BlackBerry was tight-lipped onthe detail of the Encription deal,which closed late last week (19February).

Talking about the move intoconsulting, David Kleidermacher,BlackBerry’s chief security officer,said: “We had capabilities internallybut now we have launched thatpractice externally.”

Another announcement involveda partnership with Microsoft thatenables BlackBerry to offer secureenterprise solutions via the former’sAzure cloud platform.

The deal means enterprises can optto install and manage their BES12deployment through Microsoft’scloud platform, giving full access totheir BES12 licences while benefitingfrom the Azure architecture – andwithout having to invest in their ownIT infrastructure.

The third, and final, announcementfrom BlackBerry was the expansionof its existing partnership withSharecare, a digital health firm. Thetwo have now launched a newchannel via BBM, which offersconsumers answers on theirsmartphones to their health questionsthrough expert information from thelikes of the American Cancer Societyto licensed medical staff.

During the Q&A following theannouncements, the company wasguarded, declining to offer anyupdates on its handset business, forinstance in terms of plans for moreAndroid devices beyond the Priv. Thecompany instead pointed to an updateit made at CES 2016 in January.

Patrick Collison, co-founder andchief executive of US paymentscompany Stripe, used his

keynote presentation yesterday tospeak about Atlas, a beta productdesigned to help entrepreneurs basedin developing markets “gain access tothe same business infrastructureenjoyed by tech companies here inEurope or the US”.

Collison spoke of an unevenplaying field, where startups outsidethe G20 – which depend on theinternet to grow their businesses –are often excluded from theinternational banking system andcannot accept payments in differentcurrencies.

One way to get round this would befor emerging-market startups to

incorporate in the US or Europe, butCollison said it could take months –and chew up lots of resources – if theyembarked on this process themselves.

Stripe Atlas is designed to getround that problem. The producthas been developed in partnershipwith Silicon Valley Bank, whichwill provide newly-establishedbusinesses with US bank accounts.

Stripe is also working with lawfirm Orrick to provide standardisedpaperwork and with PwC toprovide startups with freeconsultancy advice. “We’re alsoworking with AWS [Amazon WebServices], which are going toprovide a smoother and easier on-ramp to their services.”

Collison asserted that companiesthat sign up to Atlas could beaccepting payments within a matter

of days, with a “fully-fledged US bankaccount”, as well as a Stripe account“to charge customers from anywherein the world”.

He added that Atlas was in invite-only mode, to hold back what hethinks will be huge demand and tomake sure that customers areproperly served.

Expansion, however, is in thepipeline. Aside from US-basedaccounts, Collison wants to addother places – or “hubs” – whereinternet-based startups fromemerging markets can beincorporated.

Growth is on the cards for Stripetoo. Collison ruefully noted thatStripe, while present in 24 countries– after only four years in operation– it still left 170 countries where itdid not have a presence.

When it comes to theopportunity to monetisecustomer data, mobile

operators still have their work cutto improve the level of trust amongsubscribers, according to a panel ofmobile network vendors andoperators at Congress this week.

Matt Beal, director of innovationand architecture at VodafoneGroup, said the operator has areasonable trust relationship withits customers. “But we have a lot todo to strengthen that,” he said,noting that this applied to the telcoindustry as a whole.

In terms of how the companywould seek to monetise data, Bealsaid Vodafone has a fairly basicapproach: to try to give customerswhat they want, when they want it.He suggested that real-timetransactions rather than monthlypayments would be one way forward.

Yogesh Malik, group CTO ofVimpelCom, had a toughermessage for telcos, saying that thetelecoms model in its current state“will not survive”.

More needs to be done to drivecustomer engagement and security,he noted, suggesting that mobileoperators should be taking an Uber-like approach to storing data and

engaging with customers, creating a“segment of one”.

Rima Qureshi, group SVP ofstrategy at Ericsson, said that evenbefore the industry looks at how itcan monetise data, it should first goback to basics and understand thevalue of what the telecoms industrywas first established to provide:voice and text services.

“As an industry we have hadaccess to all the same data fordecades but we have notmonetised it,” she said. “We arenow obliged to monetise it in a waybecause in some respects the valueof the services we are providinghas been lost.”

Many of the benefits to LTE-U seem to be focused on the operator. Whatare the gains for the end-user over free or low-cost Wi-Fi?If the operators’ make better use of all their potential spectrum assets, theycan process more data, and support more services for consumers. What’smore, they will make their networks more reliable and robust, and create theopportunity for personalised, localised services.Enhancing the service capability through LTE-U will actually enablecustomers to get the maximum benefit from their data allocation and enjoyan overall better mobile data experience. And let’s not forget that LTE-U willimprove the economics of service delivery for operators and encouragecompetition – all of which is good news for customers.

Are there differing views among operators as to the benefits of LTE-U, andwhat are the factors behind this?The end goal for all operators is to deliver the best sustainable service theycan to their customers, and to do so at an affordable price. To do this, everyoperator is looking at a network modernisation programme. Of course, they are at different stages of that evolution and therefore havedifferent views of what’s next. But I believe that, in the end, every operatorwill recognise that LTE-U has a role to play in that transformation and that itprovides an opportunity to deliver new services and open up new markets.

Is the Wi-Fi industry likely to push back against LTE-U – and what could itdo? Who is best placed to moderate this debate?Those vendors and Wi-Fi operators that have invested heavily in the technologywill be concerned about the impact LTE-U could have on their business. At Small Cell Forum we have already been working on Wi-Fi integration andalso have a group that I lead which is looking specifically at the licence-exempt space. We’re well placed to moderate this debate and that’ssomething we’ll address in the conference panel here at MWC.

How does LTE-U fit into the small cells roadmap – why will the two be aneffective combination?Firstly, our roadmap is defined by our operator members, it matches thedrive to network densification, and looks to boost coverage and capacity byusing all the available spectrum.The best network performance gains will be achieved by having themaximum understanding of the network environment and all the availableresources. With a fully-integrated small cell, this is easy to achieve as thedynamic allocation of radio channels can be controlled by the small cell on anear instantaneous level.

What are the timeframes for LTE-U to move through pilots towards fullcommercial launch?There are so many variables here – the local licence requirements, theoperators network plans, and the handset availability for starters – but thingsare moving, and moving quickly. Verizon has already announced plans todeploy, Qualcomm is now actively testing in Germany, and I think we’ll seecommercial launches as early as this year.

Dutch energy supplier Enexissaid the reason to deploy itsown, private MVNO service

was to avoid being locked to aparticular SIM card provider ormobile operator.

“We had been searching for anacceptable solution to our smartmeter deployment plans for twoyears with regard to wirelessconnectivity,” said Frank Bodewes, atelecoms consultant with Enexis,speaking at Wednesday’s Reinventionof the MVNO conference session.

“The Dutch energy regulator waskeen to see the smart meterprogramme move ahead, but it tooktwo years to involve and convinceour telecoms regulator that aprivate MVNO was the right wayforward.”

Bodewes admitted that the utility

firm had looked at wirelesstechnologies other than cellular, butwas persuaded by the requirednetwork coverage.

“We considered using smart orprogrammable SIMs but didn’twant to be locked to a particularsupplier. This was a real issue for us.”

The company claims to be thefirst to launch a private MVNOservice with the singular objectiveof connecting the three millionsmart meters that will beprogressively installed across its

customer base by 2020.“We consider our private MVNO

approach the most cost-effectivesolution to connecting smartmeters. We don’t have anyambitions to use the network forothers services, and we’re unable tolaunch anything in the publicdomain,” said the Enexisconsultant.

The company recently confirmedthat Sagemcom had been selectedto supply smart meter wirelessmodules developed by SierraWireless.

MulteFire, an LTE-basedtechnology for small cellsoperating in unlicensed

spectrum, now has the support of11 vendors and interest is startingto strengthen.

Unlike Licensed Assisted Access(LAA), which sees unlicensedspectrum used alongside existingLTE technology, MulteFire deliversLTE in unlicensed spectrum withoutthe need for an anchor channel.

The technology is designed toboost the performance andovercome Wi-Fi’s biggest issue –limited coverage area. Its coverageand capacity will be similar to LAA’sperformance in unlicensedspectrum, said Stephan Litjens, theMulteFire Alliance chair and headof innovation steering at Nokia.

“MulteFire is a fully standalonesystem that can augment existingnetworks, and has many use cases inverticals, including public and privatevenues, as well as for fixed operators,

ISPs and cable operators,” he said.The MulteFire Alliance is billing

it as LTE-like performance with Wi-Fi-like simplicity that enhancesoverall cellular coverage.

Co-existence between licensedand unlicensed LTE has come a longway from the early days whenoperators thought there would bemajor obstacles. The group also saidit has been careful not to disrupt theexisting Wi-Fi ecosystem.

A few years ago these two groupsprobably wouldn’t be holding a jointdiscussion and sharing drinks later,joked Signals Research CEOMichael Thelander, during a paneldiscussion. The industry hasevolved, he added, party because ofeducation, but also because there’sa better understand of how LTE-Uand LAA perform.

He cited the example of AT&Tnot long ago taking a wait-and-seeattitude, but recently movingtoward a trial. “They haven’tcommitted to deploying it, butclearly they are starting to see an

interest in the capabilities.”One powerful application is to

cover the unconnected, the nextfour billion people, in emergingmarkets by making it more costeffective for new types of players tocover areas that have less of aneconomic incentive to cover, saidAthonet CEO and founder KarimEl-Malki.

Ruckus COO Dan Rabinovitsj notedthat the DNA of the Wi-Fi industry ismore focused on enterprises than thecellular operators. He argued thatthere’s an opportunity for fixed-lineplayers, which have strongrelationships with enterprises butnever had licensed spectrum, to takeadvantage of MulteFire.

The MulteFire Alliance technicalspecification group is developingthe MulteFire specification basedon 3GPP Release 13 and Release 14advancements.

Son, who spoke at the GTISummit, said the average human IQis 100 and the most intelligent hasan IQ of about 140.

“That’s 40 per cent more brain

power. But 30 years from now whatwill be the IQ of artificialintelligence? It will be 10,000,versus 100 for humans. Of coursecomputers will be much smarterthan us and quicker than us.”

Son forecast 20 years ago that thenumber of transistors in a chipwould surpass the number ofneurons in the brain in 2018. Hecalculated the number at 30 billionchips. In 30 years, he predicts thenumber of transistors on a chip willbe one million times higher than thenumber of neurons in the brain.

intelligence will power a wave ofsmart robots of all sizes that canrun and swim like humans. "Willthat be good or bad? I say that willbe interesting,” he noted, eliciting achuckle from the audience.

No,we don’t. The size of spectrum islimited. The only solution is toevolve the technology, which willmake things happen.”

The 5G technology roadmapwill include Wi-Fi and theuse of unlicensed

spectrum bands, said Nokia’shead of e2e mobile networksolutions, Peter Merz.

“Wi-Fi has become a de-factoservice and needs to be integratedinto 5G,” claimed Merz at a panelsession on 5G technology,timelines and applications. “Whilethe use of unlicensed spectrumneeds agreed standards, it could beconsidered a goldmine for 5G,offering huge potential.”

This viewpoint was supported byKen Stewart, Intel’s chief wirelesstechnologist for its platformengineering group.

“802.11’s roadmap will run

alongside that of 5G,” said Stewart.“The IEEE standard provides a veryimportant ecosystem, and isthought to carry more than 50 percent of today’s wireless data traffic.The development of 802.11 willcontinue, and will include supportfor IoT applications in the future.”

However, the Intel exechighlighted the effort involved todesign and develop thesemiconductor technologynecessary to support 5G integratedwith other wireless standards.

“5G will require profoundsemiconductor and softwaredevelopment for the devicemarket. There is a hugeengineering effort needed if we’reto meet the timescales.”

A side effect of this, according toStewart, will be the disappearanceof a physical SIM card, especially insmall devices. “Operators should beable to embed this functionality intothe device, but it has implicationson how security is managed andperceived by the subscriber.”

On a more philosophical note,Stewart said that the wirelessindustry could never really perceivea use for the megabit speeds it wasinventing. “I’m still not sure what theuse case will be for 5G, but our pastefforts have always paid off.”

No silver bullet exists forsecuring the Internet ofThings (IoT), and the

responsibility lies with allstakeholders, from users through tonetwork operators, according toTelenor Connexion.

Jimmy Johansson, the company’sinformation security and privacyofficer, told Mobile World Daily thereare no specific products ortechnologies that can mitigate allpossible threats in one swoop, to makeevery solution completely secure.

He complained about thecontinued lack of understandingabout security. “Not the fact that itmust be considered, but moreabout the profound importance todo it properly.”

Asked who should takeresponsibility, he said everybody hada role. “Actually I cannot think of ascenario where this is not the case.”

Since companies and individualsknow they cannot protect

themselves completely, theimportant thing is to be able todetect anomalies and address themquickly to minimise damage.

Johansson believes end-to-endencryption of payload isnecessary, instead of just relyingon an encrypted VPN-tunnel. “ButI also want to note that privacyconcerns are among the bigchallenges for IoT.”

He noted that the internet is notdesigned with national borders –and the differences in local lawsand regulations that comes withthem – in mind.

“For cellular connectivity, andespecially with roaming where datausually crosses many nationalborders, properly implemented,strong, end-to-end encryption ismandatory for data to stay secretand unprocessed until it reaches itsdestination and can be decryptedand verified for integrity,” he said.

When it comes to watchingvideos, including longerformats, convenience

wins over quality, said JimmyMaymann, executive vicepresident and president at AOLContent and Consumer Brands,during a keynote at 4YFN.

“Mobile is a convenient device,almost an extension of your bodyfor the younger generation.Audiences value convenience overviewing quality when choosing adevice. Mobile will win any daybecause it is the easiest device tocarry around,” he said.

This has far-reachingconsequences not only on contentconsumption but on contentcreation itself, as anyone with amobile device is now a potentialcontent producer.

According to Maymann, 55 percent of mobile data consumptionin 2015 was video-led and 85 percent of all content on the internetwas created by individuals.

“They have been empowered

and want to create content,” hesaid. “[With a traditional]broadcasting model, you can’treport from an event unless youhave five cameras. This model isbeing disrupted, people have thepower in their pocket to becomecreators.”

The shift from print to digital hashad a profound impact on mediaand seen titles disappear afterfailing to adapt to the new digitalreality.

Maymann predicted that the shiftfrom desktop to mobile is going tohave much deeper consequences.

“Mobile is the first device, thefirst platform and it means as adeveloper it becomes the placewhere you start everything you do.Don’t make the same mistakespaper newspapers did ten yearsago, by putting paper contentonline. If you already have a lot ofcontent, you need to challengepeople in your organisationbecause it is much easier to takecontent from a small screen to alarger screen than vice versa,” he said.

User concern about privacy ison the rise, a finding borneout by a number of surveys,

and the issue is attracting theattention of some heavyweightregulators, according to DenelleDixon-Thayer, Mozilla’s chief legaland business officer.

Citing the National Cyber SecurityAlliance’s consumer privacy indexand its own internal studies, Dixon-Thayer told Mobile World Daily: “Userprivacy and the way companieshandle user data is top of mind for uson both mobile and desktop – and wesee a significant risk of losing trustunless we collectively focus on theuser and actively bring the user intothe value exchange.”

Regulators have turned their eyestowards the subject. US FederalTrade Commission chair EdithRamirez urged companies toaddress the security and privacyrisks arising from connected homes.

Meanwhile, the EuropeanCommission has also looked intoInternet of Things (IoT) and dataprotection. It says companies mustlook at security and privacy

challenges from the draft stages ofdeveloping a product, according toMozilla.

The perception of what isacceptable, in terms of howcustomer data is used, varies byregion, she said. In countries likeBrazil and Germany, people aremore likely to consider privacy afundamental right, and as a resultlegislation tends to have higherprotection standards, she said.

The US contrasts here becauseprivacy is perceived as a valuerather than a right: great to have inan ideal world, but susceptible tocompromise, added Dixon-Thayer.

In another observation, shepointed out how device formfactors continue to evolve but thereis no consideration of how toengage with users about data andprivacy policies. The pressure fallson the network.

Instead the industry needs to lookat shifting responsibility for privacyand security to the client side.

“The more control of theinformation you put in the user’shands, the less that responsibilityand liability is on the server,” saidDixon-Thayer.

Sebastian Tolstoy, VP ofbusiness development atEricsson, said it will likely

take a combination of continueddevelopments in operatornetworks, business models andpartnerships with innovators in newtechnologies to bring internet toeveryone in the world.

“In the coming five years we willnarrow the gap from nearly half toless than 10 per cent of the globalpopulation that lacks mobileinternet coverage. That issignificant,” Tolstoy said.

For its part, Ericsson is looking topartner with other innovators tohelp eliminate the remaining gap.

“For example, Ericsson andFacebook established anInnovation Lab for Internet.org in2014 and later that year our worktogether yielded network insights todrive up to 70 per cent appcoverage improvement on operatorXL Axiata’s network,” Tolstoy said.

The Ericsson executive pointedout that many consumers indeveloping markets first experiencethe internet on a smartphone,usually due to limited access tofixed broadband.

“It took over five years to reachthe first billion smartphonesubscriptions, a milestone that waspassed in 2012, and less than twoyears to reach the second billion.The 4 billion mark is expected to be

reached by 2016, according to thelatest Ericsson Mobility Report. Soto some degree it is rectifying itself.Especially as the cost of devices iscoming down – basic smartphonesnow run below $35,” he said.

Indeed, greater deviceaffordability is encouraging newsubscribers in developing regions.Growth is expected to beparticularly strong in the MiddleEast and Africa due to a young andgrowing population and rising GDP.

“Several countries in the AsiaPacific region will experience astrong subscription uptake over thenext five years – so much so thatAsia Pacific will generate 40 percent of total smartphone traffic bythe end of 2021,” Tolstoy added.

UK operator EE is steppingup efforts to enhanceconnectivity in public

stadiums, but revealed that dealingwith content rights and venueowners remains a big challenge.

EE’s head of video and mobilecontent, Matt Stagg, told MobileWorld Daily that the company,recently acquired by BT, foundworking with stadium owners andcontent rights owners the mainbarrier when developing innovativetechnology within stadiums thathost high profile sporting eventsand concerts.

Stagg said both parties had to“recognise the role of theconnected experience for their fansand work with us to deliver that”.

“This is all about enhancing thelive experience, not taking awayfrom it,” he added.

EE last year vowed to make theUK’s Wembley Stadium the mostconnected in the world, anddemonstrated a live LTE networkdelivering 400Mb/s speed, as wellas using LTE Broadcast to provideexclusive live and replay content ata high profile football game held atthe venue in May 2015.

Stagg also noted that therequirements for connectivity“differed extensively depending onsport and venue”.

“Football is all about access toreplays and highlights from multipleangles, while motor racing requiresreal time footage of an entire race”.

“Currently, as cars go past youhave nothing to do but listen to

commentary until they come back,”he said. “Using 4G technology cangive the fan access to multipleangles, and also comes with realtime statistics, drive and pit lanecommentary – the experience canbe as rich as you want it,” he said.

At Mobile World Congress 2016,the company, along with Finnishvendor Nokia, is also demonstratingMobile Edge Computing servicesover an LTE network, which it saysis designed “to enhance customerexperience in high traffic locations”.

Partnerships andinnovation required tobring internet to all

Growing consumer concernover how private data isbeing used is undermining

confidence in the ability of mobileoperators to protect thisinformation and will impact thepotential to develop morepersonalised mobile services,according to new research.

A survey commissioned bySyniverse examined consumerattitudes to mobile privacy amongmore than 8,000 people across eightcountries, and found that more than50 per cent of people trust mobileoperators and brands from othervertical sectors less today than theydid three years ago, with 70 per centof consumers now not trustingthem to safeguard private data.

An overwhelming majority ofconsumers (89 per cent to 94 percent) also admit to having at leastsome concern when sharing datawith brands in the retail, financialservices, travel and hospitalityvertical markets as well as withmobile operators.

Mary Clark, chief marketingofficer of Syniverse, which providestechnology and services to mobile

operators, said it is wrong to assumethat consumers will willingly sharepersonal data in return for morepersonalised services.

“Consumers are far from willing,”she said. “What is clear above allelse is that brands and mobileoperators face a ‘privacypredicament’ that must be overcomefor mobile to continue to flourish.”

Syniverse said some of the findingsare “alarming” for mobile operatorsplanning to develop personalisedservices. For example, fewer than 20per cent of consumers are willing toshare more rich “contextual” data,such as location, browsing historyand shopping habits.

“Personalisation depends onpeople’s willingness to sharepersonal and contextual

information to enhance their mobilejourney, and that’s largely missingat the moment,” said Clark.

“Consumers clearly do not feelthat their mobile experiences havebeen significantly improved to dateby the sharing of personal data.”

However, the executive said thestakes are too high to give up onpersonalisation, with too manybusiness models and engagementstrategies at risk. She said all playersin the mobile value chain must nowrethink how they obtain and usepersonal data, with transparency ofparamount importance.

“It is on this foundation that a new‘mobile privacy pact’ will beestablished to ensure business modelsand engagement strategies of thefuture are fully realised,” Clark added.

Privacy concerns erodingconsumer trust in mobileoperators, research finds

Companies that make smartconnected devices rangingfrom wearables through to

connected cars will now be able tointegrate Visa payments capabilityinto their products and services.

The Visa Ready programme,which already includes mobiledevice manufacturers, is now beingextended to include the broad varietyof connected devices associatedwith the Internet of Things (IoT).

The first IoT companies to jointhe Visa Ready programme willfocus on payments for wearables

and automobiles. Initial Visa Readypartners include Accenture, Coin,Giesecke & Devrient, Fit Pay andSamsung, which will work withdevice manufacturers includingChronos and Pebble.

Luke Fromowitz, co-founder andCTO of Chronos, said there is “noquicker or more convenient methodfor payments” than “payment on thewrist”, for example.

Fit Pay, meanwhile, hasdeveloped its own paymentplatform services for wearabledevices and will now be able tointegrate the Visa card network.

CEO of Fit Pay, noted that this is “acritical step to bringing contactlesspayment capabilities to a wholenew generation of IoT devices,including Pagare – a payment smartstrap we have developed for thePebble Time”.

All partners in the Visa Readyprogramme will use the Visa TokenService (VTS) security technologythat replaces payment accountinformation found on paymentcards, such as the 16-digit accountnumber, with a unique digitalidentifier that can be used toprocess payments without exposingactual account details.

MVenturesbcn, which is the entrepreneurshipprogramme of Mobile

World Capital BarcelonaFoundation, is partnering withFrance-based accelerator Numa tocreate an accelerator programmewith global reach in the city ofBarcelona.

The programme will focus onprojects related to innovativemobile solutions. “We are reallyhappy about partnering with Numabecause we share the same vision,”said Aleix Valls, CEO of MobileWorld Capital Barcelona, to MobileWorld Daily.

Founded in Paris in 2000, globalinnovation network Numa hasaccelerated 104 startups since2011, raising on average €500,000per startup and a total of €50million. In total, 80 per cent ofstartups accelerated by NUMA areactive today.

It runs accelerator programmesin Russia, India, Morocco andFrance, and plans on deploying itsmodel in 15 countries by 2019.

Commenting on theannouncement during a panelsession on corporate venturing at4YFN, Olivier Mougenot,investment director at Numa, saidhe hoped the new venture was thefuture of acceleration in Europe.

Valls added: “We will create a realbridge between the two ecosystemsand we have the ambition to createa digital global hub in Europe.”

Startup selection will start inMay with the goal of starting thefirst four-month bootcamp inBarcelona in November. In total,ten startups will be chosen toparticipate every year.

The new joint venture will take asix per cent equity stake in all

participating start-ups. In return,startups will receive a convertiblenote of €50,000 to fundinvestments during the programmeand fund their relocation toBarcelona.

If everything goes to plan, moreaccelerators of the same kind couldopen their doors in additionalcities. “If this works well then wewill launch other programmes,”said Valls.

mVenturesbcn andNuma launch aEuropean accelerator

UK-based mobile virtualnetwork operator ThePeople’s Operator (TPO) is

to enter new markets. “We have launched in the UK and

in the US and our plan is to go asglobal as possible, as fast aspossible, starting later this year orearly next year,” said Jimmy Wales,chairman of TPO, during a keynoteat 4YFN on Wednesday.

Wales also co-founded onlineencyclopedia Wikipedia.

TPO, which differentiates itselffrom other operators and MVNOsby redistributing ten per cent ofevery subscriber’s bill tocharitable organisations, hasgrown its subscriber basesubstantially in 2015.

The number of UK subscribersincreased by 50,000 to a total of70,000 in 2015. TPO estimates thatit will have 75,000 subscribers inthe US by the end of the year. “Weare aiming for two per cent of themarket in UK and in the US by2021,” said Wales.

Established in 2012, TPO wentpublic in late 2014, raising £20million. The operator has today amarket capitalization of £57million, which is significantly lowerthan its initial market capitalisationof £100 million.

In 2015, TPO launched anadvertisement-free social networkincluding TPO Giving, a fundraisingplatform that prides itself in nottaking a cut.

“We are very cause-driven. Whenyou are joining TPO, you aresupporting a particular cause. The10 per cent comes out of themarketing budget,” said Wales.

To market itself, TPO reliesheavily on word-of-mouth andactivity on its social platform ratherthan traditional advertising.

“We have to compete like anyother mobile phone provider,” saidWales. “We can’t afford to be thecheapest in the market but we haveto offer good value. Because wedon’t have a big marketing budget,it is crucial that our customers goout and sell the proposition andsign other people up.”

Virgin, Bosch, BMW andZurich have all chosen toengage with the startup

community to boost innovationwithin their organisations – but theyhave all chosen different ways ofleveraging external skills.

According to consultancy firmHeywood and Sons, there is no one-size-fits-all corporate innovationmodel, and organisations choose onaverage 2.5 different methods.

Using various innovation modelsis exactly what Virgin does. Thecompany has a long tradition ofventuring into new areas, such astelecoms, travel, space andholidays, among others, via bothinternal and external initiatives.

“We have a 40-year history andhave created nine 1-billion-dollarcompanies using differentinnovation models. We are alsotoday an active corporate investor.Innovation is in our DNA,” saidClaudia de Antoni, investmentprofessional and director at Virgin.

Virgin Media has also launchedan accelerator with TechStars inLondon.

Bosch has created IoT Labs andchosen to partner with a universityto stimulate its internal R&D.

“When the topic of IoT came up,Bosch thought it was time to trynew ways of innovating. But wehave a long history of acquiringother businesses and also ofcreating small businesses,” saidMarkus Weinberger, director ofBosch IoT Labs, a partnership thatfocuses on innovations within thesmart home and connected devices.

“We not only do Powerpointengineering. Instead we try andtransfer ideas to colleagues atBosch, to feed new features andnew functionalities into theirproduct roadmaps. And if we donot find the right enthusiasm aboutit, we can spin off our own startup.”

Bosch did just that with smarthome security startup Comfylight,in which it has retained a stake.

For BMW, Gregor Gimmy,founder and head of Startup

Garage, said internal corporateventuring efforts have their merits,but believes the very reason theywant to work with startups isbecause these are highly specialisedand not constrained by the existingcorporate environment.

He refers to their model as a co-development partnership.

“For startups to [survive], theyneed to work with a big corporateat one point. We are seeing manyaccelerators out there. But what arethey really achieving?” he asked.“Maybe instead of being a venturecapitalist for startups we should bea venture client,” he added.

The BMW innovation modelentails that startups becomesuppliers from day one in order tovalidate their product with BMW’sR&D. “They can share networksand they have a foot in theenterprise. They can prove thetechnology works and there is noneed for exclusivity. If theproposition is convincing, we hookyou with R&D and pay you.”

Insurance company Zurich haschosen yet another path, relying on

internal innovation but starting withzero budget (BMW invests €4billion in R&D very year).

“We believe innovation shouldcome from the employees internallyso we set up a process for ouremployees to become moreinnovative,” explained ZavierTuduri, CEO of Servizurich.

Servizurich does not have a specificteam working for innovations. Itapplies two rules: no Powerpoint anda prototype within three months. Theinnovators must then seek buy-infrom the organisation to go ahead anddevelop a real product.

The company is also workingwith the 350 startups present inBarcelona.

SDN/NFV evolution-- what’s next?1. SDN/NFV -- FROM TALKS TO DEPLOYMENT

The telecommunications and IT industries have been working on SDN/NFV standardizationand demonstrations for at least two years. Last year, in particular, we saw significantadvancements towards SDN/NFV commercialization. Most of the architecture standards, andthe MANO interface (arguably the most difficult component for integration), have nearly beenfrozen by ETSI. More and more commercial cases of virtualized solutions have beenannounced, including the swapping out of legacy EPC and IMS solutions.

We see network virtualization expanding from core to access, and from mobile to fixednetworks. Ultimately, entire networks will be restructured based on SDN/NFV and multi-tiered data centers. With a distributed data center architecture, each virtualized networkelement can be deployed on selected physical data centers according to performancerequirements or other policies, a scheme that we call cloudification.

This cloudification approach, together with the MANO system, creates resource andmaintenance efficiencies, which will help operators deal with the increasing capacity andthroughput requirement of the 5G era. But, is that all? Of course not. One fundamentalaspect of this network and service evolution is network slicing.

2. WHAT IS NETWORK SLICING, AND WHY IS IT NEEDED?

The idea behind network slicing is to create the flexibility to deliver one or more performanceelements (such as capacity, throughput…) to a third party, in combination with any group ofnetwork functions and in different configurations. For example, Company A needs an internalcommunication system with voice and SMS for only 1,000 users, while Company B needs aninternal communication system with voice and video for 2,000 users.

With a legacy solution, operators would have to deploy two sets of such systems withdifferent functions and configurations, or select a customized solution with multi-tenantcapability. Since each system would only support a very small number of users, it would notbe feasible from a Return of Investment (RoI) perspective.

In this case, a virtualized solution is more appropriate. Operators would only need to buildtwo different software versions and instantiate two communication systems on one datacenter, using one software version for each company. Allocated resources would be justenough to satisfy the requirements of each company. This solution would make the businesscase, and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), feasible when compared with the legacy solution.However, two drawbacks remain. One, is that each enterprise customer would need adedicated software version. The second, is that the communication system vendor wouldhave to perform some customizations. These two may present a challenge when approachingthe enterprise market.

The same situation exists for public network service. For new service innovation, operatorshave to rely on system software vendors to implement customized system releases, even forsmall service layer enhancements based on existing lower layer functions. That is reasonwhy a further evolution from SDN/NFV is still needed. This architecture should support thecapability of network slicing, which could provide any combination of existing micro functionswith different capacities and configuration to third parties (maybe the operator’s R&Dengineers or any group of small startup companies). With this architecture and capability,any third party could implement service customization, network-based innovativeapplications and services.

3. THE NEXT STEP: A CLOUDIFIED APPLICATION FACTORY

In our view, a network with these capabilities will evolve from a system that only providesnetwork services directly to subscribers to a factory: a PaaS platform. Developers canleverage the basic functions provided by this factory to create a variety of new cloudifiedapplications.

To give developers as much flexibility as possible for new application and service innovation,the network should be restructured using a modular architecture, where componentmodules are disaggregated from one another based on function, and not anymore on theirlogical position in the network. All these software components (within a components library)provide an open interface to be integrated by third parties. This factory provides anintegration framework that defines the integration rules and ensures the integration is asdesired by the developers.

To ease the developing process, the factory should integrate the develop environment, testtools, automatic verification tools, etc.…. Since a new application is based on other opencomponents provided by the factory, a continuous integration and deployment environmentshould also be provided, to reduce the resource requirements on the developers' side. Andbecause, unlike common web or IT applications, network applications have SLA (ServiceLevel Agreement) guarantees, performance benchmark tools are of great importance. Thispart of the factory works as the development framework for the developers.

One burden for most operators is network maintenance. Vendors must allocate considerablestaff resources for post-sale support, which is the reason why large vendors are most timesselected as the main providers. The maintenance staff requirements would still be achallenge for personal developers or small startup to enter this industry. A solution to thisproblem is the integration of the operation framework to the factory. Like the MANO systemdefined by ETSI, the operation framework provides lifecycle management of the cloudapplication all the way from deployment, scaling up/down, upgrading, self healing, toshutdown. All these management functions should be carried out automatically, to save asmuch staff resources as possible. A real-time monitoring system is needed within thisframework to provide real-time monitoring of the platform -- lower layer resource loads,upper layer KPIs and messages over the network. This is not only important to guaranteeSLAs but also helps developers in their debugging process.

A logical architecture example of this system is Cloud Works (solution of ZTE) in the abovefigure. The framework Portal is a unified portal for developers and maintenance staff toaccess the platform. This architecture enables end to end support for application innovation,from the initial phases of development, all the way to support, and maintenance.
