DriveIT Low VoltageAC DrivesHigh productivity with low energyconsumptionLow Voltage AC Drives are used to control the speedand torque of a standard induction motor, theworkhorse of the industry. ABB is a major player inboth motors and drives worldwide. With the drive themotor has a smooth starting with no inrush current,which reduces the plant maintenance cost.

AC drive technology extends the motor speed rangefrom zero to high above the rated speed increasingthe productivity of the driven process. The drivereduces the machine speed and saves energy when alow capacity is enough. The AC drives made by ABBand used around the world reduce CO2 emissions bytens of millions tons annually.

Accurate speed control of the manufacturing processoptimizes the quality of the end product. DirectTorque Control (DTC) invented by ABB has improvedthe control accuracy and by making speed encodersunnecessary.

Through versatile connectivity the drives made byABB can be easily integrated with different processautomation systems fulfilling the requirements ofIndustrialIT.

Our offeringABB Low Voltage AC Drives power range is from0,12 kW to 4,3 MW for voltages from 200 V to 690 V.With a step-up drive practically any motor voltagecan be chosen. Drives are made for markets withboth 50 Hz and 60 Hz supply frequency.

The Low Voltage Drives series include models to suitvirtually any application or operating environment witha complete selection of enclosure ratings, combinedwith highly flexible control and communicationcapabilities.

Micro Drives are compact and easy to use. They arewidely used in pump, fan and conveyor applicationsin small industry and buildings. Small machinerytype drives look similar but they have morefunctionality and connectivity to suit to controldifferent low power but intelligent machineryfunctions.

Integral drives and motors are compact packagesfor speed control solution in harsh environments inindustries and utilities. In addition to ABB motorsthe drive can be mounted on motors from othermanufacturers and if needed the drive is availableas a wall mounted variant.

Standard drives for low and medium power range aresuitable for many industrial, utility and commercialbuilding applications like pumps, fans, conveyorsand plant machinery. For the same power rangesingle drives with DTC are suitable for moredemanding machines in industry like extruders,decanters, centrifuges, different metal industryapplications etc.

Regenerative drives are available for power rangesfrom 11 kW to 1100 kW. These can be used forapplications where repeated braking with highefficiency is required. This principle is also suitablefor continuous power generation as in windpowersystems.

For different process control applications ABB hasdeveloped an engineered drive system for multiplemotor line-ups. The system is utilizing a commonDC busbar design, which is cost-efficient with lessspace and high energy efficiency. ConnectivityThe drive communicates with the environment inseveral ways. The communication is an essentialelement for successful IndustrialIT. Thecommunication goes through different types ofconnections:

Control Panel is the most common Man MachineInterface (MMI). The panel usually has push buttonsfor START/STOP, LOCAL/REMOTE, RESET,DIRECTION OF ROTATION, SPEED setting and

PARAMETER settings. The ABB control panels havean alphanumeric display for reading of drive statusand value of different parameters.

Hard wired I/O is the traditional communicationchannel between the drive and the controlledprocess. Most common inputs are interlockings,reference signals and measured actual values.Typical outputs are relay contacts for RUN andFAULT signals and interlockings between processmachines.

Fieldbus connections are used for communicationbetween drives and process automation systems. ForABB drives this connectivity is achieved with adedicated gateway concept between the fieldbussystems and ABB Distributed Drive CommunicationSystem (DDCS). DDCS is a high speed optical linkproviding fast data transfer and excellent noiseimmunity.

Drive OPC is a software package which allows OLEfor Process Control (OPC) communication betweenWindows applications and ABB drives using DDCS.It is ideal for integrating commercial PC monitoringsoftware and ABB drives. OPC is an open interfacefor factory automation and a key technology forIndustrialIT.

The Integrated Drive (DCE 400 plus; 20 - 130 kW)is the easiest way to replace an existing DC drive.AC fuses, auxiliary transformer, motor fan starterand a main contactor are already integrated.

DCS 500 (10 - 5000 kW) is the Standard DC Drivewith a modular hardware structure. Free programmingsoftware is possible via function blocks. The 12-pulse configuration enables a power range up to10 MW and more.

EngineerIT EnergySaving and Efficiency

Variable Speed Drives save energy andthe environmentThe main reason to use variable speed drives inindustries, utilities and buildings are to improve thequality of the main function of the process. Goodexamples are: even thickness of a metal sheet,constant water distribution pressure or comfortableindoor climate in an office.

A very important additional benefit with variablespeed control is the optimizing of electrical energy inthe process. Most of the processes are running withvariable load and the variable speed control alwaysadjust the speed to the optimum and the energyconsumption is reduced to minimum.

Energy savings may be tens of percent whencompared to constant speed systems, which arecontrolled by mechanical ways like throttling controlof pumping systems.

ABB has been a leading company to apply energyefficient AC drives for pumps and fans, which aremost suitable for energy saving with variable speedcontrol. It is estimated that the ABB AC drivesdelivered 1991-2000 to pumps and fans contributeevery year to energy saving of 54 TWh whichcorresponds a 45 million tons reduction of CO2

emissions.

Energy Calculator for Pumps is for comparing energy,money and environmental savings with variablespeed AC drives compared to throttling, on-offcontrol and hydraulic control of pumps.

Q. What is IndustrialIT Enabled?

A. This designation describes products from ABBand selected partners, which are equipped withstandard information characteristics necessary tosupport the component as part of a broaderIndustrialIT system. ABB tests and certifies thetechnologies for compliance at one of four levels -ranging from presentation of base productinformation in common electronic formats, toextended aspect data that may be exchangedbetween components to optimize the system inwhich they are working.

Q. What is an Aspect Object?

A. This unique software shell bundles electronicproduct characteristics (Aspects) - such asinstruction manuals, drawings, remote controlfaceplates, and configuration tools - into a“virtual” replica of the real component, formouse-click access to the information required toinstall, configure, operate, and optimize it.
