D10 Materials and Processes SPEAKER

ETH Polymeric Materials

Our group focuses on the development of new methods for the synthesis of smart polymers and polymeric nanomaterials. We routinely exploit controlled radical polymerization strategies to produce polymeric materials with controlled architecture, molecular weight, dispersity and functionality. We subsequently seek to understand the self-assembly of polymeric materials into nanostructures where all properties can be controlled (e.g. size, shape, surface, core). This allows us to target a range of applications in the material and biomedical field.

D4 Materials and Processes Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy (PAS)

Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy (PAS) is a non-destructive method employing the annihilation characteristics of anti-matter. Positrons, the anti electron, have a unique sensitivity to their immediate electronic environment on the nanometer scale and offer complementary insight compared to established techniques. D3 Materials and Processes Qzabre GmbH QZabre is a recently founded ETH Spin-off. Our expertise is imaging magnetic fields and currents at the nanometer scale. Don't rely on simulations, but verify them! Our technology is based on atomic defects in diamond: nitrogen vacancy centers. By locating one of these at the apex of a scanning tip, we can achieve unprecedented sensitivity and resolution, enabling you to image miniscule stray fields, or non-destructively track current flow in integrated circuits.

E5 Cyber-physical Systems ETH Interactive Geometry Lab

We present a stretch-sensing soft glove to interactively capture hand poses with high accuracy and without requiring an external optical setup. Our device can be fabricated and calibrated at low cost, using simple tools available in most fabrication labs. To reconstruct the pose from the capacitive sensors embedded in the glove, we employ a deep network architecture that exploits the spatial layout of the sensor itself. The network is trained only once, using an inexpensive off the-shelf hand pose reconstruction system to gather the training data. The per-user calibration is then performed on-the-fly using only the glove. Comparing against commercial data gloves, we achieve a 35% improvement in reconstruction accuracy.

A8.5 Technology for Health* Prolongate Most protein-based drugs have a short circulatory half-life in the patient and therefore require frequent injections, which are expensive and a great inconvenience. The most popular strategy to extend the circulatory half-life of protein drugs is chemical conjugation with a "stealth polymer", which reduces elimination via the kidneys. Currently, this modification can only be achieved following purification of the protein from the production host. The central innovation of our work is a microbiological process in which genetically modified bacteria produce ready-to-use protein drugs, modified with a natural sugar polymer. The sugar polymer used is also found in the human body and on the surface of certain pathogenic bacteria that use it to camouflage themselves from the immune system. Our approach significantly simplifies the production process and yields a precise, well-defined product compared to state-of-the-art technologies. In our startup we are planning to apply this platform technology to develop a robust pipeline of next-generation protein drugs.*Prolongate is part of the ETH Pioneer Fellowship Program and will exhibit at the booth of the ieLabs (A8).

ETH Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing

Our research revolves around computational methods to convert image-like sensor data into models of the world. The data we are interested in comes from various sources, including consumer cameras, airborne mapping cameras, laser scanners, range cameras, optical and RADAR systems on remote sensing satellites, etc. The output we aim to deliver are maps and models of the environment, such as virtual 3D object models, or maps of elevation and land-cover. We focus on automatic image interpretation, i.e. we aim to create computer systems which can, with minimal user interaction, extract both accurate geometric measurements and useful semantic interpretations of the observed world from the image data.

A8.1 Sustainability* FenX After the London Grenfell fire in 2017 and Paris agreement on climate change in 2016, there are increasing demands for non-flammable and environmental-friendly insulation materials. FenX exploits mineral waste and transforms it into highly porous foams that can be produced through advanced processing methods, such as 3D printing. This allows FenX to produce porous materials with excellent thermal properties simply by exploiting abandoned and widely available materials. More importantly, FenX’s foams can be fabricated at ambient temperature releasing no CO2 emissions and are 100% recyclable. *FenX is part of the ETH Pioneer Fellowship Program and will exhibit at the booth of the ieLabs (A8).

C7 Sustainability Gilytics ETH Spin-off Gilytics breaks down the complexity in linear infrastructure planning (e.g. power lines, pipelines, roads, train tracks). Relying on GIS data and satellite images, algorithms calculate routes for new linear infrastructure projects in a few seconds and display the results in a realistic 3D environment. The cloud-platform makes the decision and planning process 50% faster than existing methods and enables transparent and interactive stakeholder engagement.
