First A350 XWB takes to the skies on its maiden flight

A new chapter opened in Airbus’ 43 year his-tory as the first A350 XWB, the world’s most ef-ficient large twin-engined commercial aircraft, powered aloft for its maiden flight at Blagnac in Toulouse, France. Equipped with Rolls-Royce Trent XWB turbofans, the A350 XWB first flight took place over south western France. An international crew of six was on board, comprising two Flight Test pilots, one Test Flight engineer and three Flight Test engineers. This first flight marks the beginning of a test campaign totaling around 2,500 flight hours with a fleet of five development aircraft. The rigorous flight testing will lead to the certifica-tion of the A350-900 variant by the European EASA and US FAA airworthiness authorities, prior to entry into service in the second half of 2014 with first operator Qatar Airways.

LIAT takes delivery of first ATR-600

Regional airline LIAT Limited started its fleet upgrade with the first new ATR 72-600 air-craft delivered on June 13th. This first ATR in LIAT’s fleet is being leased from the lessor GECAS (GE Capital Aviation Services). This is the first of a total of eight ATRs (four 68-seat ATR 72-600 and four 48-seat ATR 42-600s) that will be introduced into LIAT’s fleet.

British Airways poised to become first airline in Europe to introduce both the Airbus A380 and the Boeing 787 into its fleet

British Airways will take delivery into the UK of its first two 787s on consecutive days, June 26th and 27th, followed by its first A380 on July 4th. Keith Williams, chief executive, said: “The delivery of these exciting air-craft opens a new chapter in Brit-ish Airways’ history. We are proud to be leading the way in Europe in operating both these aircraft types. “Over the next 12 months, we will take delivery of new long-haul aircraft at an average rate of one every two weeks. Following their arrival, both aircraft types will begin a complex ‘entry into service’ programme, which will see pilot and cabin crew training taking place at Manston Airport in Kent, customer service trials at Heathrow and short-haul flying for both aircraft, including flights within the UK.

Boeing forecasts demand for more than 35,000 new airplanes

Boeing projects a demand for more than 35,000 new airplanes over the next 20 years, valued at $4.8 trillion. The company released its annual Current Market Outlook (CMO) on June 11th, in Paris, forecasting the world fleet to double over the next two decades. Both passenger traffic and cargo traffic are expected to grow 5% annually. The single-aisle market, served by Boeing’s Next-Generation 737 and the future 737 MAX, is the main driver of the forecast and continues to show strength. 24,670 new airplanes will be needed in this segment due to the growth of low-cost carriers and airlines from emerging markets. Widebodies, such as Boeing’s 747-8, 777 and 787 Dreamliner, also make up a large part of the forecast. 8,590 new airplanes will be needed in this segment, fueled in part by airlines replacing their older fleet with new, more fuel-efficient airplanes. The market for new airplanes will continue to become more geographically balanced over the next two decades. Asia-Pacific, including Chi-na, will lead the way in total airplane deliveries.

New Airplane Deliveries: 2013-2032Asia-Pacific: 12,820, Europe: 7,460, North America: 7,250, Latin America: 2,900, Middle East: 2,610, C.I.S.: 1,170, Africa: 1,070, World Total: 35,280

Seymour said that in the wake of the suc-cessful maiden flight on Friday of Airbus’ new “composite” wide-body, he would fully expect at least a flypast at Paris this week.

“I imagine Airbus will make every attempt to do so, but regulators have strict poli-cies over airshow flying. It may be a little too soon.”

Boeing will have two 787s on show - a Qatar Airways and British Airways aircraft. “That programme has obviously suffered this year from the battery issues, so Boe-

ing will be looking forward to pushing the PR machine on to these smart-looking - and game-changing - aircraft.”

He added that smaller manufacturers such as Embraer and Bombardier are likely to make attempts to grab the headlines in the very competitive 90-120 seat market.

Seymour concluded that Mitsubishi of Ja-pan would “love to have a clear plan for the MRJ (Mitsubishi Regional Jet), prob-ably the most advanced regional jet, but it needs to gain orders on the global stage to be a success”.

Bell Boeing awarded contract for 99 V-22 Osprey Tiltrotor aircraft

The Bell Boeing V-22 Program, a strategic al-liance between Bell Helicopter Textron and Boeing, was awarded a five-year U.S. Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) contract for the production and delivery of 99 V-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft, including 92 MV-22 models for the U.S. Marine Corps and seven CV-22 models for the U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command. Valued at approxi-mately $6.5bn, the contract is structured to provide nearly $1bn in savings to the U.S. government compared with procurements through single-year contracts. The contract also includes a provision permitting NAVAIR to order up to 23 additional aircraft.

Deliveries from the agreement, which is a cost-effective alternative to annually con-tracting for the aircraft, begin in 2015. “This multi-year contract provides unprecedented savings for the U.S. Army and American tax-payers,” said Col. Fokker Services successfully completes (K)DC-10 cockpit upgrade program for RNLAF

Fokker Services successfully completed the (K)DC-10 Cockpit Upgrade Program (“CUP”) for the Royal Netherlands Air Force (“RNLAF”), a key milestone as this is the second up-graded aerial refueling tanker to come into operation. In 2005 Fokker Services signed the agreement with the Defense Materiel Organization (“DMO”) who managed the modifi-cation of the DC-10 (transport aircraft) and two (K)DC-10’s (aerial refueling tanker) for the RNLAF. Fokker Services partnered with Boeing for the design to enhance the (K)DC-10’s to meet the current and future requirements of the civil aviation regulations to operate and access global air space and meet de-manding current and future military mission requirements. The first aircraft (DC-10) was re-delivered on April 2011 after com-pletion of a develop-ment phase by Fokker and Boeing to integrate next generation technology (avionics) which meet the RNLAF system requirements. As the design for the two tanker aircrafts contained minor variances compared to the DC-10, the modification was accelerated resulted in re-delivery of the remaining two aircraft within 18 months.
