Notes: 1. This year there are fewer songs than last year, but some of them are quite ‘wordy’ so we suggest that these are the ones which children should start learning first. 2. Two songs - O what a beautiful morning and When you wish upon a star will be signed throughout using Makaton sign language for the deaf and partially hearing. As with all the other songs it is the quality of singing which is of paramount importance so, if you find that the actions are unduly preoccupying or confusing your pupils, forego the signs in deference to the singing. 3. The songs include call and response, unison, 2- 3- and 4 part singing plus choral speaking. Lyrics include vocabulary in Latin, Portuguese, Spanish, Swahili, and Zulu.

1. JAMBO Jambo (echo) Jambo (echo) Jambo everybody, jambo (echo) Repeat Teachers notes Jambo means “hello” in Swahili and this will be used as a call and response song to open the concert. It is also an exercise in controlling the volume when singing though, however loud the music gets, the children should never shout. On the CD there are 8 beats/clicks to count in the singers but at the concert there will be no introduction so please ensure that the children watch the DVD so that they know how the conductor will indicate who's turn it is to sing.

*****************************************************************************************

2. SCOO BE DOO SONG

1 Doo – doo – doo – doo-de-doo (echo)

2 Scooby dooby dooby dooby doo-doo-doo (echo)

3 Scoobedy doobedy doobedy doobedy doo-doo-doo (echo)

4 Bup du-wap bup du-wap (echo)

Teachers notes: This is another call and response song and once again, please ensure that the children watch the DVD so that they know how the conductor will indicate whose turn it is to sing. Once we've sung it through as a call and response, we will then sing it as a 4 part round and we will carry on singing until the signal to stop. One extra thing to note: when practising this song, please make sure that the children listen for two Bup du-waps before singing the echo.

3. OH WHAT A BEAUTIFUL MORNING Oh what a beautiful morning Oh what a beautiful day. I got a beautiful feeling Everything's going my way. All the cattle are standing like statues All the cattle are standing like statues They don't turn their heads as they see me pass by But a little brown sparrow is winking her eye. Oh what a beautiful morning Oh what a beautiful day. I got a beautiful feeling Everything's going my way. All the sounds of the earth are like music All the sounds of the earth are like music. The breeze is so busy it don't miss a tree And an old weeping willow is laughing at me! Oh what a beautiful morning Oh what a beautiful day. I got a beautiful feeling Everything's going my way. Oh what a beautiful day.

Teachers notes: The actions for this song will be in Makaton sign language which the children can learn from the DVD. At the last line, the children can sing either the high or low line, whichever pitch is most comfortable for them and sounds best.

4. YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE You are my sunshine, my only sunshine You make me happy when skies are grey You'll never know, dear, how much I love you. Please don't take my sunshine away I'll always love you and make you happy If you will only do the same. But if you leave me for another, You will fill my heart with pain. You are my sunshine, my only sunshine You make me happy when skies are grey You'll never know, dear, how much I love you. Please don't take my sunshine away

Teachers notes: None

5. BRING ME SUNSHINE

Bring me sunshine, in your smile, Bring me laughter, all the while, In this world where we live, there should be more happiness, So much joy you can give, to each brand new bright tomorrow,

Make me happy, through the years, Never bring me, any tears, Let your arms be as warm as the sun from up above, Bring me fun, bring me sunshine, bring me love.

Bring me sunshine, in your eyes, Bring me rainbows, from the skies, Life's too short to be spent having anything but fun, We can be so content, if we gather little sunbeams,

Be light-hearted, all day long, Keep me singing, happy songs, Let your arms be as warm as the sun from up above, Bring me fun, bring me sunshine, bring me love.

Teachers notes: There are a lot of words in this song so it may be helpful for the children to start to learn it early in the term. If they recognise it as the Morecombe and Wise signature tune, please ensure that they sing it as does the vocalist on our CD rather than in the Morecombe and Wise style.

6. TOMORROW IS ANOTHER DAY Ooh lullah lay,

Another evening fades away,

I know the golden sun won't disappear for long

Because tomorrow is another day

(And I say ….......)

Repeat as a four part round

Teachers notes: This will first be sung in unison and then as a four part round. For the round section, on the CD each group sings the song through twice, after which they keep repeating the line 'Tomorrow is another day' until all groups are singing the same. If all goes well in the performance, we may keep the round going for longer, so what the children will need to do is watch the conductor who will give the signal (demonstrated on the DVD) for repeating the last phrase and thus bringing the song to an end.

7. CATCH A FALLING STAR

Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket Never let it fade away. Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket Save it for a rainy day.

For love may come and tap you on the shoulder Some starless night And just in case you feel you wanna hold her You'll have a pocketful of starlight

Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket Never let it fade away. Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket Save it for a rainy day.

For when your troubles start a-multiplying, And they just might, It's easy to forget them without trying With just a pocketful of starlight.

Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket Never let it fade away. Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket Save it for a rainy day

Save it for a rainy day Save it for a rainy day

Teachers notes There will be some simple actions to this song which are shown on the DVD. At three points in the song (at the end of the introduction and at the end of the two verses) there is the sound of an unaccompanied glockenspiel that sounds like an echo. The children should listen out for this before starting to sing. Please also note that the very low note only occurs in the last line of the song.

8. SWINGING ON A STAR Would you like to swing on a star? Carry moonbeams home in a jar? And be better off than you are? Or would you rather be a mule? A mule is an animal with long, furry ears He kicks up at anything he hears His back is brawny and his brain is weak He's just plain stupid with a stubborn streak And, by the way, if you hate to go to school You may grow up to be a mule. Would you like to swing on a star? Carry moonbeams home in a jar? And be better off than you are? Or would you rather be a pig? A pig is an animal with dirt on his face His shoes are a terrible disgrace He's got no manners when he eats his food He's fat and lazy and extremely rude And if you don't care a feather or a fig You may grow up to be a pig. Would you like to swing on a star? Carry moonbeams home in a jar? And be better off than you are? You could be swinging on a star - You could be swinging on a star - You could be swinging on a star.

Teachers notes: This song is quite wordy so I would suggest that it is one of the first that the children learn. It will not be signed but we will use Makaton signs as cues for a few of the words (see DVD).

9. WHEN YOU WISH UPON A STAR

When you wish upon a star Makes no difference who you are Anything your heart desires Will come to you

If your heart is in your dream No request is too extreme When you wish upon a star As dreamers do

Fate is kind She brings to those to love The sweet fulfilment of Their secret longing

Like a bolt out of the blue Fate steps in and sees you through When you wish upon a star Your dreams come true

Teachers notes:

We will use Makaton sign language for this song which the children can learn from the DVD. The singing should be very slow and sustained.

10. SANBONANI

Sanbonani, sanbonani why do you cry? Sanbonani, sanbonani we will be together. Sanbonani, sanbonani no need to cry The sun will shine on the other side. Everyone has a different tune; A little voice that they listen to. Some may hear the perfect truth Some may be mistaken You were born in a troubled land Now you feel you must make a stand But if you just put out your hand I know it will be taken. Sanbonani, sanbonani why do you cry? Sanbonani, sanbonani we will be together. Sanbonani, sanbonani no need to cry The sun will shine on the other side. Sanbonani, sanbonani why do you cry? Sanbonani, sanbonani we will be together. Sanbonani, sanbonani no need to cry The sun will shine on the other side. The sun will shine on the other side.

Teachers notes:

Sanbonani means 'Good evening' in Zulu and the version we will be singing is very similar to the PJ Powers one which is on Youtube. The actions in the chorus will be slightly different in our performance so please use our DVD.

11. SAMBA LELE Samba, samba, samba Lelê. Samba, samba, samba Lelê. Samba, samba, samba Lelê. Pisa na barra da saía, lala. Samba Lele's very poorly, He broke his head and he surely Needs to be given a treating, Rather than given a beating. Samba, samba, samba Lelê. Samba, samba, samba Lelê. Samba, samba, samba Lelê. Pisa na barra da saía, lala. Boys who are dancing the samba, Shouldn't show off to their friends or Step on the toes of the ladies And spoil the hems of their dresses. Samba, samba, samba Lelê. Samba, samba, samba Lelê. Samba, samba, samba Lelê. Pisa na barra da saía, lala.

Repeat

Teachers notes: This Portugese song is about a boy named Lelê and it warns him against stepping on the hems of the girls' skirts whilst dancing. We will dance some basic samba steps at the beginning, middle and end of the song and these are demonstrated on our DVD. Before the introductory music begins, there are 8 beats on the woodblock which will prepare the children for starting the dance at the same time the music starts.

12. OLYMPIC RAP

1 I throw the javelin and I putt the shot. And I run so fast I make the track red hot. I'm a winner I'm a winner Gimme an S, gimme a P, gimme an O - R - T I'm a winner. 2 I swim like a fish and I dive through the air. I cycle like the wind and I box like a hare. I'm a winner …........ 3 I row and I sail and I fence real good. And I use a bow and arrow like Robin Hood. I'm a winner …........ 4 I do my personal best and I work for my team. I reach for the top and I live the dream I'm a winner …........ 5 I jump up high, I do the triple and long. And I stand with pride to hear the national song. The European Anthem – ending with ‘Ready Steady Go Bang'

Teachers Notes - Olympic Rap:

The European Anthem at the beginning and end of the rap is Beethoven's Ode to Joy from his 9th Symphony. The cue for the children to start rapping is ‘Ready, Steady, Go, Bang’.

We have not included 'go, go, go' in the lyrics of the chorus as we thought the children might need breathing space here. However, if they want to put them in, that's okay.

Unlike the other verses, the last verse doesn't lead into the chorus but the children shouldn't go wrong if, at the phrase 'stand with pride' they put their right hand on their heart and stand straight and still for the playing of the anthem.

The phrase 'Citius, Altius, Fortius' means 'faster, higher, stronger' and was adopted as the Olympic motto in 1924. The children should not speak this but simply listen to the Roman gladiator speaking throughout the rap. Opinions vary regarding Latin pronunciation, some favouring medical/legal, others favouring ecclesiastical, pronunciation. For our purposes we have used the vernacular pronunciation as in 'city' and 'civil'.

13. TO STOP THE TRAIN

To stop the train in cases of emergency

Pull on the chain, pull on the chain.

Penalty for improper use – fifty pounds.

Paren en tren en casa d'emergencia

Tiran la cadena, tiran la cadena,

Multas por mal uso cincuenta libras

(Sing as a round)

To stop the train in cases of emergency

Pull on the chain, pull on the chain.

Penalty for improper use – fifty pounds.

Teachers notes:

We may make this song slightly longer in performance than it appears on the CD but the conductors will give clear guidance about what is happening. The arrangement on the CD is:

1. sing in English with actions

2. sing in Spanish with actions

3. sing in English with actions as a 3 part round

In the round, each group sings the song through once and then repeats the last line until all groups finish together in unison. We will then perform the song once with actions only, no singing, and these actions are demonstrated on our DVD.

Spanish is now the official modern foreign language in Hackney so it is the first the children will be taught in school. You may remember that we did a Spanish counting song in last year's programme.

14. LOCOMOTION Everybody's doing a brand new dance now (Come on baby do the locomotion) I know you'll get to like it if you give it a chance now (Come on baby do the locomotion) There's never been a dance that's so easy to do It even makes you happy when you're feeling blue So come on come on do the loco-motion with me You gotta swing your hips now Come on baby, jump up, jump back. Oh well I think you got the knack Move around the floor in a locomotion (Come on baby do the locomotion) Do it holding hands if you got the notion (Come on baby do the locomotion) There's never been a dance that's so easy to do It even makes you happy when you're feeling blue So come on come on do the loco-motion with me You gotta swing your hips now Come on baby, jump up, jump back. Oh well I think you got the knack Come on, come on, do the loco-motion Come on, come on, do the loco-motion Come on, come on, do the loco-motion with me

Teachers notes:

There will be some dance movements to accompany this song which can be learned from the DVD. When you practise this song, the words in brackets could be sung by a small group of backing singers but, at the concert, everyone will sing everything.

15. ALL GOD’S CREATURES GOT A PLACE IN THE CHOIR chorus

All God's creatures got a place in the choir Some sing low and some sing higher, Some sing out loud on the telephone wire, Some just clap their hands, or wings, or anything they've got now repeat chorus Instrumental

Listen to the top where the little bird sings On the melodies and the high notes ringing, And the hoot owl cries over everything And the blackbird disagrees.

All God's creatures got a place in the choir Some sing low and some sing higher, Some sing out loud on the telephone wire, Some just clap their hands, or wings, or anything they've got now

Instrumental

The dogs and the cats they sing in the middle While the honeybee hums and the crickets fiddle, And the donkey brays and the pony neighs And the old grey badger sighs

All God's creatures got a place in the choir Some sing low and some sing higher, Some sing out loud on the telephone wire, Some just clap their hands, or wings, or anything they've got now

Instrumental

Listen to the bass, it's the one on the bottom Where the bullfrog croaks and the big hippopotamus Moans and groans with a big t'do And the old cow just goes moo.

All God's creatures got a place in the choir Some sing low and some sing higher, Some sing out loud on the telephone wire, Some just clap their hands, or wings, or anything they've got now

All God's creatures got a place in the choir!

Teachers notes: This is another wordy song so I'd suggest that the children start learning it early in the term. They might like to watch the song sung by Celtic Thunder on YouTube but our lyrics are slightly different from theirs. The song could be used to teach the difference between high and low pitch which children sometimes confuse with high and low volume. Each verse is accompanied by high or low pitched instruments and, to make a point, the last voice is sung at a very low pitch. The children will not be able to copy this so should sing it at their own pitch.
