RemoveallpiecesfromtheInfinium LSbox.Allassemblyhardwareislocatedinaclearplasticbaginsidethebagcontainingthecontrolhousingpouch.

1. Thecuffontheendofthes-handlehasbeenfactoryinstalled.Testitsplacementbygraspingtheblack-rubbereds-handle(Figure1).Ifthecuffdoesnotfitcomfortablyunderyourforearm,loosenthenut,removethenut,boltandwashers,andrepositionthecuff.Reinserttheboltandwashers,andtightenthenut.�.Removetheblackstempiecethathasbeentele-scopedintothesilverstem(Figure2).Inserttheendofthesilverstempiece,withthehole2"fromthetop,overthebottomoftheblackstemattheendofthes-handle.Significantpressureneedstobeappliedtothesilversteminordertoinsertthebolt(Figure3).

SEARCHCOILS

TheInfinium LScomesstandardwitha10"x14"PowerDDsearchcoil.TheDDcoilconfigurationcoupleswiththeAPItechnologyoftheInfinium LSmakeitthemostpowerfuldetectorinmineralizedsoil. Inareaswherethegroundislowinmineraliza-tion,theoptional10"x14"monosearchcoilisrecom-mended.Inthesegroundconditions,themonocoilwilloutperformthePowerDD. Forsmallertargetsinlowmineralizedsoil,choosetheoptional8"monosearchcoil.Itprovideseasiermaneuverabilitythanthe10"x14"mono. Forunderwaterhunting,chooseyoursearchcoilusingthesamecriteriaaslandhunting.Considerthelevelormineralizationofthewaterand/orthesoilatthebottomofthebodyofwater.Forexample,insaltwater,thePowerDDisthebestchoice.Infresh-water,however,themonosearchcoilswillperformbetter.Anothercriteriawouldbethesizeofthetarget.Generallyspeaking,thesmallerthetarget,thesmallerthesearchcoilshouldbe.

CONTROL FUNCTIONS

Power Usedtoturnonthedetectorandtochooseslow, lock or fast Automatic Ground Track.Abatterycheckoccursautomaticallyeachtimethepowerisswitchedon.(Figure15.)

Audio Threshold Adjustment Usedtosetthebaseaudiolevelaccordingtoanindividual'shearingrequirements.TheThreshold Adjustmentmayalsobeusedtohelpmaskoutsidenoise.Typically,thesoundissetnolouderthannecessary;justabovesilentisrecommended.(Figure15.)

BASIC OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

Discrimination AdjustmentUsedtosetthedesiredlevelofdiscrimination.(Figure15.)

ThefollowingprocedureshowshoweasyitistooperatetheInfinium LS.

1.  Turn On/Battery Test: Turnthedetectoronandnotetheresultsofthebatterytestrepresentedbyarangeofonetofourbeeps.Fourbeepsindicatethebatteriesarefull.Onebeepindicatestheyneedtobereplacedwithinonetotwohours.However,becauseofinternalvoltageregu-lationcircuitry,thedetectorwillmaintaintotaloperat-ingpowerandperformanceuntilthebatteriesarefullydepleted. Scanametalobjecttoconfirmdetection.Ifthedetectorfailstooperate,verifythatthebatterypackandbatteriesarealignedproperly.

�.  Selecting Automatic Ground Track Setting: KnowingtheconditionsofyoursearchareawillhelpyouchoosetheAutomaticGroundTracksettingthatwillbestsuityourneeds. InitiallyselecttheLockpositionusingtherotarypowerswitch.OperatingintheLockpositionis

recommendedformaximumdetectiondepthunless:A.Thedetectorisnotproperlygroundbalanced,orB.Youarehuntinginchanginggroundmineralizationconditionsthatrequirecontinuousgroundtracking. Impropergroundbalanceorchanginggroundmineralizationareidentifiedbyerraticaudiosignalscausedbytheground.Ifyouexperiencethesesig-nals,youwillneedtoswitchtherotarydialtofastorslow.Itisrecommendedthatyougroundbalancethemachinebeforecontinuing. Togroundbalancethedetector,turntheAutomaticGroundTrackswitchtoeitherfastorslow,andbobthecoilupanddownapproximatelyonetosixinchesabovetheground.Whenthedetector'saudiosignalsmoothsout,movetheAutomaticGroundTrackrotaryswitchtolockandtheunitwilllockthegroundtracksettingatthatvalue. Iferraticaudiosignalscontinue,youmayneedtoturntheAutomaticGroundTracktosloworfastandhuntinoneofthosemodes.

UseSlowwhen:A. Operatingoverslowlychangingground mineralization,or

B. Whensmallgroundbalancingadjustmentsare needed.

UseFastwhen:A. Huntingoverextremeorquicklychangingground mineralization,orB. Whenlargegroundbalancingadjustmentsare needed.Impropergroundbalancewilldegradedetectiondepthandaudiostability.Itshouldnotbenecessarytoreground-balanceeverytimeyouturnthemachineon.Itwillcontinuetooperatewiththesameground-balancelevelbeforethemachinewasturnedoff.Intherareeventthatextremegroundconditionscontinuetoproduceaudiosignals,increasediscrimi-nationinsmallincrementsuntilthedetectorbecomesstable.Toensuremaximumpossibledetectiondepth,onlyincreasediscriminationenoughtoachievedetec-torstability(thisshouldneverexceedthe3settingonthedial).

�.  Setting Threshold: Setthebaseaudiolevelaccordingtoyourindivid-ualhearingrequirements.TheThresholdAdjustmentmayalsobeusedtohelpmaskoutsidenoise.Typically,thesoundissetnolouderthannecessary;justabovesilentisrecommended.

�.  Setting Discrimination: SettheDiscriminationcontroltozerooralowleveluntilyouarefamiliarwiththeconditionsof

yoursearchareaanddeterminethekindsofmetalitemsyouwanteliminatedfromdetection.Withzerodiscrimination,youwillachievemaximumdetectiondepthandwilldetectallmetalsincludingfoilandpull-tabs,butyouwon'tmissanydesirabletargets.Onceyouarefamiliarwiththehuntingarea,thenre-adjustthediscriminationsettingtoalevelthatwilleliminateunwanteditems. BeawarethathighconcentrationsofsaltwatermayrequireincreasingtheDiscriminationuptoavalueofthreeorless(seetipsonSearchingShorelinesandShallowSurfonpage25).

�. Bench Testing and Understanding   Audio Signals: Benchtestingisrecommendedtofamiliarizeyour-selfwiththedetectioncapabilitiesandaudiorespons-esofthedetector.Thiswillhelpyoudetermineifatargetistreasureortrash.SincePulseInductionmachinesonlygiveaudiblecluestotheidentityofdetectedtargets,it'simportanttolearnthesedifferentsignals. Testsshouldbeperformed(Figure16)withthesearchcoilperpendiculartoabench,floororothernon-metallicsurfaceandseveralfeetawayfromanylargemetallicobject.Passvariousmetallictargetsfromside-to-sideacrossthebottomofthesearchcoilatadistanceofaboutthreeinches.Listencarefully

totheaudiotones,notingwhichtargetsproducehighandlowtonesandhowthetar-getresponsechangeswithdiscrimination.Asageneralrule,poorconductors(smallnuggets,mostrings,pull-tabs,nick-els,etc.)shouldpro-

duceahightonefollowedbyalow-toneecho.Goodconductorssuchaslargenuggets,pennies,dimes,quarters,etc.shouldproducealowtonefollowedbyahigh-toneecho.Inaddition,mostironwillproducealowtonefollowedbyahigh-toneecho,sincetoaPImachine,ironbehaveslikeagoodconductor.

�.  Searchcoil Scanning Technique: Methodicallysweepthesearchcoilfromsidetosidekeepingitataconstantheightofonetotwoinchesabovetheground.Restrictyoursweepingspeedtoabout1/2totwofeetpersecond.Overlapeachsweepbyabout1/4thediameterofthesearchcoil.Trytoscaninastraightline(notawidearc);ithelpskeepthesearchcoillevel,reducesthelikelihoodofliftingthesearchcoilattheendofeachsweepandensurestheoverlapsweepsremainuniform.

�.  Reverse Discrimination Technique: Whenatargethasbeendiscoveredwhileoperatingatminimumdiscrimination,youmayusethereversediscriminationtechniquetohelpdeterminepossibletargetidentification.A.Onceatargetisfound,increasediscriminationtomaximumlevel(IronCheck).B.Ifthetargetstillproducesasubstantialsignalthereisagoodchanceitisiron.Ifthetargethasdisappearedorproducesonlyafaintsignalthenit'sprobablyadesirabletargetandnotiron.Beaware,however,thatsomesmallironmaybehavelikeadesirabletarget,andsomedesirabletargetssuchaslargenuggetsandcoinsmaybehavelikeiron.C.AswithallPIdetectors,eliminatingthedetectionofironisdifficultifnotimpossible;however,thereversediscriminationtechniqueiseffectiveatidentifyingmostiron.Inaddition,attachingamagnettotheinsideofyourdiggingtoolcanhelpseparatebitsofironandotherdebrisfromyourtreasurefinds.D.Finally,itisimportanttorememberthatanydetec-tionsignal,nomatterhowloudorfaint,representsthesoundofmetalanditssourceshouldalwaysbedetermined.

�.  Pinpointing Tips Wheneveryourdetectorlocatesatarget,locatingitpreciselywillenableyoutorecoveritbydiggingthesmallestholepossible.Thisisaccomplishedbypinpointing.NotethatpinpointingwithaDDsearchcoilissomewhatdifferentthanpinpointingwithamonosearchcoil.Theinstructionsforeacharebelow.

Pinpointing with Power DD Searchcoil ThePowerDDcoilhasanarrowdetectionfieldpatternthatrunsfront-to-backunderneaththecentersectionofthecoil,soalwaysdetectbysweepingthecoilinaside-to-sidemotion. First,slowlyscanthesearchcoilfromside-to-sideoverthetargetarea,notingthelocationwheretheloudestsignaloccurs.Oncetheareawiththeloudestsignalhasbeenidentified,positionyourself90°fromthetargetareaandagainscanside-to-sidetopinpointthetarget'sexactlocation. Fortargetsonorclosetothesurface,startbehindthetarget'ssuspectedlocationandscantheareausingshortside-to-sidesweepswhilemovingforwarduntilthetargetisexactlypinpointedunderneaththetipofthecoil.

Pinpointing with Mono Searchcoils First,slowlyscanthesearchcoilfromside-to-sideoverthetargetarea,notingthelocationwheretheloudestsignaloccurs.Thendrawanimaginary"X"onthegroundbyscanningthesearchcoilfront-to-backandagainnotingthelocationoftheloudestsignal.Thecenterofthe"X"isthelocationofyourtarget. Note:theInfinium LSisamotion-mode-onlydetector;thesearchcoilmustbemovingslightlyinordertomaintaindetectionsound.

�.  Adjusting Frequency Youcansubtlyadjusttheoperatingfrequencytoreduceinterferencecausedbyotherdetectorsorpowerlinesifneeded.Toadjustfrequency: TurntheThresholddialbeyond“MAX”to“Freq.Adjust”andyou’llnoticethattheaudiothresholdwasincreasingandthenabruptlydroppedbacktoalowerlevel.Thedetectorisnowina"FrequencyAdjustmentMode". YoucannowadjusttheoperatingfrequencyusingtheDiscriminationknob.IncrementallyadjusttheDiscriminationknob,pausingaftereachadjustmenttolisten,untilyouobtainminimuminterference.Notethatthereare32differentfrequenciestochoosefromsoturnthedialinverysmallsteps.

HUNTING APPLICATIONS

Onceyouobtainthequietestfrequency,returntheThresholdknobtoyournormalsettingandthefrequencywilllockatthechosenvalue.YoucanthenreturntheDiscriminationknobbacktoyournormalsetting.WhenthedetectoristurnedOFF/ON,itwillalwaysreturntoitsfactorydefaultoperatingfrequency.

Garrett'sInfinium LShasbeendesignedtohunteverywhere,especiallyinmineralizedareas,wheretheperformanceofconventionaldetectorssuffers.Afewexamplesoftheseare:

• Prospecting—goldisusuallyfoundinhighly mineralizedsoil.• Relichunting—mostU.S.CivilWarbattlestook placeinmineralizedsoil.• Beach/diving—anysaltwaterisconsidereda mineralizedenvironment(Underwaterheadphones arerequiredfordivingapplication.Seeaccessories onpage30.)• Minedetecting—environmental-proofpackageis rugged,andwilloperateanywhere.

SEARCH AND RECOVERY TIPSDo research. Thefirstruleofsuccessfultreasurehunting,whetheronlandorintheseaistodoyourhomework.Learnasmuchasyoucanabouttheareasyouwishtosearch,thekindoftreasureyouwanttofindandthebestwaystorecoverit.Thebetterpreparedyouarethegreateryourchancesforsuccess. Study surf and weather patterns. Payattentiontostorm,windandtideactivity.Treasuresfromdeepwatervaultsareoftentransferredtoshallowerlocationsliketidalpoolsandwater-filleddepressionsneartheshoreline. Abeachconsideredunproductivecansuddenlyyieldriches.Heavystormwavesoftenunearthtreasureslikeringscaughtinexposedrockandgravelareas.

Use the right recovery tools. Usetherighttoolforthejobandyou'llrecovertrea-sureinnotime.Knowingwhatyou'rediggingforandthekindofsurfaceyou'rediggingintowillhelpyouchoosetheproperdiggingtool.

Double-check your holes. Afteryoudigatarget,re-scantheholetomakesureyouhaveretrievedeverythinginandaroundit;corrodedandcoral-encrusteddesirableitemscanbeeasilymistakenforundesirableones.

Underwater searches TheInfinium LScanlocatebothferrousandnon-ferrousmetalsconcealedwithinandbelowaquaticgrowth,bottomsoilandrocks,woodandothernon-metallicmaterials.Largeitemssuchasboats,motorsandsafescanbelocatedseveralfeetbelowthesearchcoil.(Underwaterheadphonesarerequiredforunderwatersearches.Seeaccessoriesonpage30.)

Underwater Safety Tips1.Toavoidaciddamageyoushouldinstallhigh-qualitybatteriessuchasalkalineornickel-metal-hydride(NiMh)andalwaysremovethempriortostoringthedetector.2.Ifthebatterycompartmentbecomesflooded,

removethebatteriesimmediately,rinsethecom-partmentwithfreshwaterandallowtoairdry.Theelectronicscompartmentisfactorysealedandshouldneverbeopened.

3.Beforedivingalwaysexaminethesearchcoilandheadphoneconnectors,thebatterycapandverifythebatterystrength.

4.Divewithextremecaution.Observesafetypractic-estolessentheriskofbecomingentangledwiththeheadphonesorcoilcables.Ensurethattheunderwa-terheadphones'ventholesareopenpriortodiving.

5.Whenusingthehipmountconfiguration,ensurethatthebeltwillnotinterferewithdivingequipmentremovalintheeventofanemergency.

Searching Shoreline and Shallow Surf TheInfinium LSisahighlysensitivedetectorandhasthecapabilitytodetectmetalswithonlytheslight-estconductivity.Asaresult,theInfinium LSmayalsodetecthighconcentrationsofsaltwaterduetoitsconductivity.Thiseffectismostnoticeablewhenoperatingatthesea'sshorelineandintheshallowsurfwherethesearchcoiliscontinuallyencounteringpassingwaves.

IncreasetheDiscriminationsettingonlyasneededinordertoreducesaltwaterdetection.Typically,asettingofthreeorlessissufficient.Donotbecon-cernedaboutmissingtargetsduetotheincreasedDiscrimination.Rather,thestableoperationachievedwiththisslightincreaseinDiscriminationwillensurethebestpossibletargetdetectionforthissaltwaterenvironment.

Land searches Whensearchingnearwirefences,metalbuildings,etc.,makesurethatyouscanthesearchcoilparal-leltothestructure.Thiswillminimizetheinterferingresponsescausedbythemetalstructure.

Prospecting GoldandotherpreciousmetalscanbefoundinvariousformswiththeInfinium LS.Youwillmostlikelybesearchingfornuggets,butgoldcanalsobefoundaslodeorhardrockdepositsinavein,usuallymixedwithotherminerals.TheInfinium LScanalsobeusedtolocateplacerdepositsinstreamsordrysand. Sinceworkingveinorlodegoldcanrequireexpensivetoolsortechnologyandplacerdepositsmustbepannedforrecovery,theseformsaresome-timesunsatisfactoryformetaldetectorhobbyists.Recoveringanugget,however,isassimpleasputtingitinatreasurepouch.

Goldisgenerallyfoundinrockformationsalongwithagreatmanyotherconductive/ferrousminerals.Ahighqualitydetector,suchastheInfinium LSwithitsAdvancedPulseInductiontechnologythatcancelsoutmineralization,canbeusedtofindthisgoldoranyotherpreciousmetal. ItmustbeemphasizedthattheInfinium LSoranyotherqualitydetectorisusuallyoperatedwithzerodiscriminationandveryprecisegroundbalanceifgoldistobefound.Thisisparticularlyimportantwhensearchingfortinygoldnuggets.Furthermore,whenprospecting,alltargetsmustbelocatedandcarefullyinspected.Itisonlyinthismannerthatyoucanbesuccessfulinusingametaldetectortodiscoverpre-ciousmetalnuggetsandores. Hardwork,patienceandresearcharethreeofthekeystosuccessinelectronicprospecting.Researchisimportantbecauseitisvitalthatgoldalwaysbesoughtinareaswhereitisknowntoexist. Hotrocksareaproblemforanyelectronicpros-pector,whetherveteranorweekendadventurer.A"hotrock"canbedescribedasaconcentrationofironmineralthatcausesadetectortorecognizeitasmetalwhentheinstrumentisoperatingwithzerodiscrimination.Fortunately,theadvancedtechnologyoftheInfinium LSallowsittoignorenearlyallhotrocks;onlythemostextremehotrockswillproducearesponse.

YourGarrettdetectorisasensitiveelectronicinstrument.Itisbuilttowithstandruggedtreatmentintheoutdoors.UsetheInfinium LStothefullestextentpossible,andneverfeelthatyouhavetobabyit.Yet,alwayshandleitwithreasonablecare. Trytoavoidtemperatureextremesasmuchaspossible,suchasstoringthedetectorinanautomo-biletrunkduringhotsummermonthsoroutdoorsinsub-freezingweather. Keepyourdetectorclean.Alwayswipethehousingafteruse,andwashthecoilwhennecessary.Protectyourdetectorfromdustandsandasmuchaspos-sible. Disassemblethestemandwipeitcleanafteruseinsandyareas.Whenstoringlongerthanaboutonemonth,removebatteriesfromthedetector.
