current ear tag suppliers was too slow. We can
now print cattle and sheep tags for our
customers within hours, not days!
The laser machine is located at our Thirsk
Auction Mart site and we can even print your
cattle tag replacements while you wait! The tags
are high quality and most farmers will have an

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON ORDERING LAZER TAGS- Please note that although we
offer tags while you wait and replacement cattle tags in hours, this service is dependent on us accessing the ETAS authorisation system. Sometimes tags cannot be authorised due to issues with the animal movements but also the CETAS system can go down and we can’t access it at all. This can be very frustrating for us all, therefore, in cases where animals are going to auction, we recommend that you check them for lost tags and order any replacements the afternoon before. We understand this is not always possible but please be aware that if the tags can’t be authorised, they can’t be printed resulting in a delay for your order. We appreciate your patience in these situations and ETAS are undertaking improvements to minimise these incidents, which we try to resolve as soon as possible so that we can continue to offer you a great service!
Down on Spring View Farm…….
Well another eventful month passes by! We had planned to take our young (15 month) Whitebred Shorthorn bull to a show, but hadn’t realised we needed to have a bull ring in him! So we had our vet in to ring him which went quite well. We now have the bull inside to get him prepared for the next show which is the Cleveland County and then Ryedale. He is a nice bull and we have high hopes he will do well, so watch this space!
Our last Whitebred cow calved a bull calf this month and he was a big lad. This was our second calf born to the AI bull Longley Talisman so we hope he may turn into a good sort who will go on to be a breeding bull. We also bought some more Oxford Sandy and Black weaner gilts and two Saddleback weaner gilts to rear on for breeding in the new year. They have been turned out into a paddock for the summer and will no doubt try and escape but we have some good fencing including electric wire. We have loads of grass now after the rain and are going to buy a couple of steers to fatten up over the next year. We are looking at some Irish Moiled steers which are 12 months old and available from a breeder near York. Their meat eats well with good marbling throughout. We will see!

FLY PRODUCTS
If you don’t want to use medicated fly control products on your livestock or you only have a few to do why not choose from our range of non- medicated fly control products.
Summer Fly Cream is a bright yellow soothing, fly repellent cream designed to aid in the management of problems associated with maggot fly on sheep and cuts and grazes on horses.
Maggot Oil with added fly repellent is a soothing skin preparation used in sheep management when maggots and fly strike are a problem.
Stockholm Tar is especially high grade that can be used to seal and protect any small cuts or nicks so is ideal for application to wounds. It can also prevent tail biting, feather picking and summer mastitis.

FLIES ON CATTLE
This is the time when flies cause problems for
all classes and ages of cattle. Our Downland
Flydown Spot-On contains deltamethrin and is
licensed to give fly control for 4 weeks plus. It
really does work well, but remember the flies
have to land on the animal several times
before dying. It is not a repellent but it does
spread over the entire body after application.

ZOLVIX SHEEP WORMER
As you are probably aware, many sheep farms have resistance to some of the
groups of wormers available especially the benzimidazole or “white” group. The
VMD have agreed to re classify ZOLVIX sheep wormer, currently only available
through a veterinary surgeon. Zolvix is the original brand containing monepantel
introduced by Novartis in 2005.
After the launch of ivermectin in 1980 it took 25 years until monepantel became
available, an anthelmintic compound with a new mechanism of action against
gastrointestinal roundworms of sheep. Unfortunately it must be expected that the
introduction of a next class of anthelmintics with a new mechanism of action may
take another 25 years, or longer. We expect to have Zolvix available from the end
of July or early August on limited supply.
We are holding a Zolvix meeting alongside a Foot health meeting on Wednesday 13th
September at Thirsk Farmers Auction Mart. Please come along and find out why you
should be using Zolvix wormer. More details about the meeting will be available soon.
LUNGWORM IN CATTLE
As we approach mid summer, lungworm can
become a big problem even in adult cattle. If
you haven’t treated your animals with a suitable
persistent anthelmintic you should certainly
consider using one soon. Remember that
lungworm at best, will cause severe debilitation
and stress, and at worse will cause death.
Using Zermex Pour-On throughout the summer will provide up to 5 weeks cover against roundworms and 6 weeks against lungworms with a dosing interval of 8-10 weeks.
RYEDALE SHOW
Ryedale Show is held on Tuesday 25th
July this year and we will have our usual
stand, so come along and see us, enjoy some
refreshments and see our lovely Whitebred
Shorthorn cow (Elizabeth) and her calf. The Rare
Breed Survival Trust will hopefully be in
attendance too. We are also showing our bull
Spring View Roxburgh at the show so come
along and see what you think of him!
And finally… A kind hearted Yorkshire farmer decided to take his wife for a stroll one summers evening. They ended up walking down a street with several restaurants. One particular restaurant they walked by had the most heavenly smell wafting out in to the street. The wife says as they walked by “What a wonderful smell”” The farmer thought “Mmm I will treat her. So they turned round and he walked her past it again!

Question: Have you got a suitable vitamin drench for my lambs as I think they are lacking in something?
Answer: Poor growth rates can be a result of vitamin deficiency, certain vitamins like cobalt and selenium can cause a lamb to pine and scour. These two vital trace elements cannot be stored in the body but are vital for strong growth and muscle development. But remember poor growth rates can also be caused by a worm burden and other parasitic infection so don’t rule that out.
