Putting together this issue of INfo:, I realized that we had more information than we could fit in the print issue. So for the first time ever, you can find an even bigger issue of INfo: online! We’ve been putting PDF versions of the paper online since January 2009, but we wanted some-
thing a little flashier, so a few months ago, we started adding them to www.issuu.com/casscountyinfo. It’s a nice compromise for those who want to get their news online but don’t want to give up the comforts of a newspaper (like turning pages.) So this month, we’ve added exclusive content to the issue that you’ll find online. The big topic this month is the 2010 Primary Election. There have been a couple of debates — one on the radio and one at Calvary Presbyterian church — where people had a chance to hear from the candidates for Cass County Sheriff. We felt that the race for Logansport Community School Board was one that would affect
a large portion of our readers, so we asked each of the candidates to respond to our questions and they graciously did. Their answers are part of our online edition this month, so be sure to check www.issuu.com/casscountyinfo to get their views. In addition to the information you need to know before you head out to vote — like when and where to vote and who’s run-ning — you’ll also find lots of other good news and opportunities to get involved in the community. Grant-writing workshop have an idea for a project that will benefit the com-munity and improve the quality of life in Cass County? The Cass County Community Foundation is making up to $85,000 available to Cass County non-profits for the 2010 Community Grant Process. a free grant-writing workshop will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, may 20 at the LEDF Community room, 310 Pearl Street in down-town Logansport. Grant applications can be picked up at the CCCF office at 417 North St. or downloaded from the CCCF website at www.casscountycf.org after the workshop. “Back Home Again” ScholarshipThe deadline to apply for the Cass County Community Foundation’s “Back home again in Indiana” scholar-shipi is may 1, 2010. This $500 scholarship is open to Cass County’s non-traditional students who are enter-ing or returning to a college or university in Indiana after raising a family or pursuing a career. applicants must be currently working or intending to work in Cass County upon completion of their post-secondary education. Garage sale permits required Garage sales within the city limits must have a permit. Cost is $5 for 1 or 2 days and $10 for 3 or 4 days. Garage sales are only permitted 2 days twice per year for a total of 4 days. Signs are not permitted between the sidewalk and street including on trees, or on any telephone or light poles, or street or highway signs. Failure to comply could result in a fine of $100 to $300. Logansport high School seniors Sarah Cahalan and Susannah Cox will receive full tuition to the Indiana college of their choice, plus an $800 stipend for required books and equipment, as the Cass County Community Foundation’s 2010 Lilly Endownment Com-munity Scholars. Surrounded by the LhS Girl’s Basketball Team, Coach Jerry hoover accepts the Cass County Community Foundation’s 2010 “Biggest heart” in Cass County award. hoover, officially named in February as recipient of the award during the CCCF “Give Your heart Cam-paign” was nominated by his team after undergoing heart surgery and missing their final games. The nomination letter, submitted and signed by the whole team, pointed to hoover’s teaching them about life and keeping their priorities straight. The girls said, “With his new tubes pumping, he truly does have the biggest heart in Cass County. We love you, Coach!” as the recipient of the Biggest heart in Cass County award, Coach hoover will choose any fund at the Cass County Community Foundation to be the recipi-ent of a $500 donation in his name, at no cost to him. according to Indiana law, voters who want to cast a ballot in the primary election must request a ballot for either Democratic party candidates or republican party candidates. The purpose of the primary is for the major parties to nominate candidates for the November General Election. The names of any non-partisan candidates for School Board will also appear on the party ballot you choose. School board is a non-partisan election, so you can also request a school-board only ballot, without requesting a party’s primary ballot. • How can I find out whether I’m registered to vote?Check your voter registration by visiting www.Indianavoters.com or call the hoosier voterhotline at (866) IN-1-voTE (866-461-8683)• What should I bring to the polls?You must provide a government-issued photo ID to cast a ballot. • Why are you running for school board?The local school board makes the decisions that de-termine how our community’s children are educated and how our tax dollars are spent. my twelve years of experience in education, ten of those at LCSC, gives me
a good perspective on what priorities our corporation needs to focus on as funding keeps shrinking and hard decisions are going to need to be made. having worked
with the LCSC staff for many years, I know their commitment to education and to the students of our community. I am a passionate person that likes to succeed in whatever I do and will give one hundred percent to see our students succeed. I hope to be, one of five, positive leaders that will encourage the staff and do what it takes to make things better than the way I found them. Working in education has given me a good understanding of how funding works and I will take that knowledge into the school board to be fiscally responsible with our tax money. Finally, I love my kids and want the best education possible for them, and will take that same motivation onto the school board for all students in LCSC.• If elected, what is your vision for Logansport Community Schools?The school board sets goals for student achievement and evaluates progress to-ward those goals with the end goal of successful schools. Good schools are good business—they attract employers, strengthen the local economy, and enhance property values. Good schools ensure our students will be prepared to keep our nation competitive in a global economy. The school board sets the priorities and adopts the budget that determines how millions in federal, state, and local tax dollars are spent. Good schools keep the american Dream alive with an opportu-nity for every child to receive a world-class education. I believe if we aspire to be great, we will be.• What connections do you have to the Logansport schoolsThe ten years I worked at LCSC, I met a bunch of wonderful people whom I respect and would consider friends. It is their dedication that makes our schools a great and safe place to educate students. my oldest son, Ian, attends Landis elementary as a kindergarten student. he loves his teacher mrs. Kisler who does a wonderful job with his education. I have an amazing wife, marcy, who works at Landis Elementary school as second grade teacher. If I am elected I would consider it an honor to serve our community.

• Why are you running for school board?I am running because I want to give back to the community in which I live. I feel my experience from growing up, living, and working here gives me beneficial insight into the com-munity. I graduated from Logansport high School in 1989. I also have children of my own in the Logansport schools, and want to be a part of making their education, and that
of all the students of the community, the best it can be. I’ve always considered myself a “common sense” person with traditional Christian values, and would bring those traits with me to the board.• If elected, what is your vision for Logansport Community Schools?my vision and goal would be to provide the best educational experience for stu-dents while giving taxpayers the best value for their dollar. I believe the school board, superintendent, teachers and other staff members need to share the same goals and vision. much work has already been done to map out that vision, and I would like to be a part of a team that continues to refine and achieve those goals.• What connections do you have to the Logansport schoolsmy connections to the Logansport schools are three kids spread across the grade level spectrum - 9th grade at LhS, 6th grade at Lincoln, and my 4-year old who will start kindergarten just over a year from now. I have never worked for the school corporation, nor does any member of my immediate household work there. however, I have had the pleasure over the years - as a student, former ra-dio reporter, and parent - of getting to know many fine people affiliated with the Logansport Community schools. They should be proud of their accomplishments.
Voters in certain areas of Logansport will be able to cast their vote for the District 2 and District 3 seats of the Logansport Community School Corporation (LCSC) Board of Trustees. School board is a non-partisan race, meaning that you do not have to declare a party to vote for this race. • Why are you running for school board?I am running for School Board, because I have lived in Logansport all my life and have a genuine interest in wanting to help this school corporation be the best it can possibly
be when it comes to graduation rates, preparing students for the next chapters of their lives, test scores and just general overall image. I believe that my very deliberate, level-headed, common sense approach to decision making would bode well for accomplishing the goals of the School Board. • If elected, what is your vision for Logansport Community Schools?If I am elected, I envision helping the Board do whatever it can to make it possible for teachers to do their jobs in the most efficient and effective manner possible so that the whole learning experience is a positive and rewarding one for teacher and student alike. once the state comes around and realizes that not all schools are created equal, I envision our school system being recognized for having accomplished some great academic goals and made great progress even though our test scores may not have been the same as the Carmel and West Lafayette school systems’. and I dream of the day when budgets are able to loosen up a little bit again, and we are able upgrade, update and keep up with the times when it comes to buildings, sports facilities and technology. I think image is everything whether it be from the outside communities who visit us or whether it be from those within our own community. We should be proud to show off what we have. • What connections do you have to the Logansport schools? I went all the way through the Logansport school system and graduated in 1976. my wife, Chris, graduated from Logansport high School in 1982 and is now the principal at Fairview Elementary School. our daughter, hayley graduated from LhS in 2007, and our son, Tanner is a junior at Logansport high School. I am also currently on the Logansport Community School Corporation’s resource Efficiency and Effectiveness Task Force as part of the corporation’s strategic plan.
• Why are you running for school board?I am seeking election for the Logansport Community School Corporation Board of Trustees District 2 seat because I believe I am a qualified candidate. I have two children enrolled in
this corporation, a daughter, Kassie, who is a sopho-more at LhS and a son, Jordan, who is a 6th grader at Columbia middle School. my wife, Jenny, and I have always been very involved in our children’s education. I feel very strongly about giving every opportunity to succeed in life and want to make the Logansport Community School Corporation the BEST we can. I currently work for the Logansport Police Department and am on my 21st year. During my career I was assigned as a detective with the Juvenile Division. During that time I assisted many families with their children and helped them through some very difficult times. I hope that in some way I made a difference in the lives of those children. I was also assigned as the officer In Charge of a multi-agency drug task force. By serving in these capacities, I have not only worked with children and their family’s difficult situations, but with budgets and the Indiana State Board of accounts. Prior to my employment with LPD I was employed with the Logansport municipal Utilities. I was a Union Executive Board member and assisted with contract negotiations and labor issues. I also volunteer with the girls softball program in Logansport. I serve on three boards as President and oversee three leagues, with 18 teams and four traveling teams and over 300 girls. During the spring and summer months we work with many of the youth in Logansport and Cass County and try to be a positive influence on them through these programs by showing them a positive role model. In 2009, I was honored to have the softball field at the melbourne Park, home of the Logansport Cherub Softball League named after me and my family for the many hours of hard work and dedication in the construction and maintaining of the facility and the league. With these accomplishments I have been blessed to achieve, I feel that I am a candidate that has the dedication to children. I want to see all of them suc-ceed. If elected, I will be an accessible board

• Why are you running for school board?after my son left for college I made it my personal goal to become more involved, and I thought serving on the School Board would make the best use of my knowledge and experience. I believe educa-
tion is the backbone of every community. Without a strong education system, a community cannot thrive. as a life-long resident of Logansport, I have a vested interest in making sure our school system is performing at the highest possible level. I have had opportunities to move away from Logansport to advance my career, but Logansport is my home, and I have chosen to stay here because I believe in Logansport and its citizens. • If elected, what is your vision for Logansport Community Schools?I plan to create a collaborative environment by working with every level of the School Corporation, parents, students, and the general public because we all have the same goal to give our children the best education possible. I believe that if you inspire a child and make learning fun and exciting you will be amazed at the results. Teaching should not be about pushing standards down a child’s throat, but should be about inspiring that child to learn and encouraging that child to accomplish beyond what he/she thought was possible. I am sure we can all think of a teacher that inspired us in this way. I also believe the parents play a significant role in a child’s education. By getting parents involved, a child will get a consistent message from school and home that education is important. If elected to the board I plan to create policy and allocate resources to create such an environment. • What connections do you have to the Logansport schools?my family and I are all life long residents of Logansport, and graduates of Logansport high School – I graduated in 1986, my wife Luanne in 1987, and our son Justin in 2006. In addition, we recently found out we will be hosting a foreign exchange student next year who will be attending Logansport high School. I also have nieces that cur-rently attend Columbia Elementary and Logansport high School. my wife also works for the Logansport School Corporation in the IT Department.

I know that the board will be faced with extreme budget constraints which will force us to be creative in an attempt to streamline the budget and keep the cuts away from the classrooms. In conclusion, I know that with my experience with budgets, my involvement with my children’s education, my dedication to children, and my ability to work with others to complete the task at hand, I will be able to make the best possible deci-sions for all of the children enrolled in the Logansport Community School Corporation. • If elected, what is your vision for Logansport Community Schools?
my vision for the Logansport Community Schools would be to strive for excellence and make the corpora-tion and irs students second to none. I would like to see the Logansport high School’s graduation rate increase significantly and for each school in the corporation to become a Blue ribbon School. With this vision in mind I will do the following: I would like to work with other board members in the corporation and the superintendent to make this corporation a great learning environment. I know budget con-straints will make operations difficult in the near future, so I would like to work with department heads and adminisrators to streamline their bud-gets in an attempt to meet necessary
cuts and make the corporation run as smoothly as possible without inter-ruption to the classroom. I believe that the corporation is on the right track with the ENL program by starting as early as possible with students to learn the English language. This should make the transition easier for the students to function in a norma classroom setting. I would like to see this continue for the students. I would also like for the administra-tors and teachers to continue to strive for improvement each year through-out the corporation. This will reflect positively on the graduation rate at Logansport high School. The possibility of providing an ater-native school also needs to continue to be explored. This could be very ben-
eficial to the youth of Logansport and Cass County as well as students from other corporations. I think children should be given every opportunity to acquire a high school education at a minimum. This will enable them to enter the workforce and become productive members of society. • What connections do you have to the Logansport schools? I have no connections to LCSC other than my children attending school there and I am a 1983 graduate. I am not employed by LCSC in any capacity, nor is my wife or any family member. I feel this status enhances and further enables me to be fair, impartial, unbiased, and non-prejudicial in all matters presented to the Board for consideration and / or a vote.
United Way recognizes Volunteer Company of the year
The andersons of Logansport, Walton and Clymers, was named “volunteer Company of the Year” by the United Way of Cass County at the 2010 United Way and Funds State Leaders Conference help april 13 in Indianapolis. Jeremy Frerichs, Production manager at the Clymers facility accepted the award on behalf of all andersons’ employees. The andersons were recognized for their employees’ humanitarian work in the community. Through their unselfish giving of time and talent for the good of others, they inspire other companies to do the same. This past year, andersons employees, over 40, volunteered during Live United Day - a Day of action from bringing in heavy equipment to spreading mulch to building an entire wooden bridge at aim Park (adoles-cent Intramural mentoring Program for at-risk youth ages 8 to 18). Peak Community Services receives Pepsi refresh GrantScott Bruce of Pepsi Cola Bottling of Logansport recently announced that Peak Community Services was chosen as a recipient of a $4000 Pepsi refresh grant. Pepsi refresh is a national initiative to fund projects in the categories of health, arts and culture, food and shelter, the planet, neighborhoods, and education.“We were thrilled to get the news”, stated Lita rouser, Director of Development and Communications at Peak. according to rouser the money will go to the Peak Community Foundation and fund programs for people who are on Indiana’s wait-ing list for services for people with developmental disabilities. according to Indi-ana’s Family and Social Services administration, the waiting list is over 10 years long and over 200 people in Cass and Pulaski Counties are waiting for services.

“Helping our concierge, I get to work in healthcare again. Many times I’ll run into old customers–friends I haven’t seen in a while–and the
years melt away at that point. Some folks come in and just aren’t sure where to go. I help them find their way. Others come in looking a little anxious and want to talk a few minutes… share some coffee… just to get comfortable. Either way, I’m happy to oblige.”
