Safe passenger tips for parents/ caregivers/whānau INFORMATION SHEET no.4 As parents and caregivers you can help make getting in and out of a car as safe as possible for your young passengers. Make sure you: park on the same side of » the road as the place you are going to let children in and out of » the car on the footpath side only collect the children and » escort them to the car never calling a child from » across the road. Children of different ages will have different levels of understanding but here are the basics about passenger safety to work through with them: Wait until the car has stopped before you get in. » Get in and out of cars from the footpath side. » Sit in the back seat whenever possible. » Do not sit in front seats where airbags are fitted. » Wear a safety belt or sit in a fastened child restraint » for the entire trip. Sit still and don’t distract the driver. » Keep your hands and legs inside the vehicle. » Never throw things out of the window. » Wait until the vehicle has fully stopped before taking » off your safety belt. Get out on the footpath side. » Watch out for pedestrians when opening the door. » Use the door handle to close the door. »

check the following things:

Make sure all child restraints are standards-approved and fi tted

Check on everyone’s comfort and look at their safety belts

»before driving off . Are all restraints and safety belts secure?

Are all the doors shut properly?
