Welcome to new members and returning members. You

s ll have me to confirm your membership to be en tled to

vote at the AGM. This year for the first me we elect the

President, Deputy President, General Secretary and General

Treasurer at this mee ng, and there is a mo on to change a

rule in the U3A (UWA) Inc. Rules as you’d have no ced in

the last Inform which had the informa on for the AGM.

Check on the Web Page if unsure.

As you’ll also no ce, Dr David Cox is to be Guest Speaker on

the day. Well worth coming for.

Many members recently a ended a specially convened

mee ng to determine the future of City Courses. It was

successful, with many well‐considered sugges ons from the

floor. City Courses will con nue and be revamped with the

assistance of a steering group set up to meet and work with

Alan. A great outcome!

U3A Members were invited to a free screening of ‘Woman

at War’ at Luna Leederville. All our allo ed ckets were

taken and the movie was enjoyed by those able to a end.

The movie is be in cinemas now. You will be advised of any

opportuni es like this by email.

As my term of Presidency comes to an end I can report that

the Online upgrade is in progress, that you have a pro‐

ac ve Publicity Group ensuring that the word about us is

ge ng out, that Regions are well represented by their

elected Delegates, not a bunch of ‘yes’ people, that the

Web Page is being kept relevant and interes ng and the

Choir is going from strength to strength. As well as this

there are many interes ng things taking place in the

regions and you are free to visit if something takes your

fancy. Find up to date programs on the Web.

I wish the incoming Execu ve every success and look

forward to con nuing to work with the Council as I take up

my posi on as delegate.

Be seen to be doing, then your friends will want to join you

as you Learn, Live & Laugh at U3A.

PRESIDENTS REPORT U3A PIONEERS FAREWELLED

A group of members of North Coast U3A recently joined family and friends at a memorial service celebra ng the lives of Valrae and Alan Silverlock.

Val (85) and Alan (86) had been ac ve contributors to U3A since joining 25 years ago and, following a brief period in pallia ve care, they passed away within 24 hours of each other.

The popular couple were great raconteurs, renowned for their reminiscences of “the good old days” when kids could safely ride their bikes on Perth’s major roads and the State Shipping Service maintained a fleet cruising regularly up and down the WA coast.

Val served in a number of commi ee posi ons over the years and helped to dra U3A‐UWA’s first cons tu on.

Their daughter Wendy, who lives in Geraldton and son, Blair, now se led in Sydney, regularly a ended North Coast mee ngs during visits to their parents.

Said Wendy: “U3A meant so much to Mum and Dad. They described it as their lifeline when they re red and kept up their subscrip on right to the end as they said they enjoyed reading Inform, even when they could no longer a end mee ngs.”

Throughout this issue there are a number of items

submi ed by Ann Magtengaard of Mid‐North.

They are true recordings of proceedings as recorded by

court reporters. I hope you enjoy them and get a li le laugh

as you wonder at what was going through the minds of the

individuals. Thank you Ann.

A orney: She had three children, right?

Witness: Yes.

A orney: How many were boys?

Witness: None.

A orney: Were there any girls?

Witness: Your Honour, I think I need a different a orney. Can

I get a new a orney?

A orney: All your responses MUST be oral, OK What school

did you go to?

Witness: Oral.

If

If I could have back those minutes, would I do anything differently. Would I?

Would I change what I said, would I use words with more grace, and dignity, would I use words that showed a more caring side to my personality. Would I think first, and reflect and then choose each word with concern for my pa ent.

Would I make her know that she was important, that her feelings were important. That all that she had been through was understood and that she ma ered. Would I call her by name, and reach her by the tone of my voice. Would my body language show her my calmness and reliability. My availability.

It was what I had been trained for. To reach out, to be with my pa ents. To hear what they had to say. To reflect no judgement on their ac ons, their mistakes, even their craziness.

So why did she do it when I was on shi ? Was it because of me. Did she see my unwillingness to permit her to sink into the dark side, to become so ill she would not be reachable.

Had she seen deeper into me than I had into her. Was that why she tried to kill herself on my shi . Did she want me to stop her. Did she realise that I could take the ul mate care of her and for those moments in me I could just think for her and act for her.

What went through her mind as her eyes caught mine seconds before she tried to throw herself from the third story. The path concrete beneath her.

In the suicidal act she had embarked on she chose to do it near me,

Of that I was sure. It was no accident. Somewhere within her there was considera on of where she was, and who was close to her.

And I reacted, like a lion with her cub, and took charge. I forbade her to take that cri cal step in a voice so loud and so demanding, that she stopped, turned, melted, and fell backwards, as I ran towards her. She folded into herself and just gave herself permission to be totally cared for.

She had given up the will to care for, or about herself.

And that was ok.

There are always those moments when it is so difficult to bear our own life, when someone else is needed. And the relief to just allow those moments when someone else is in charge. It cannot last, we know that, and we do pick ourselves up and then use different behaviours to help ourselves, but for those precious seconds, those desperate few minutes the human spirit needs the gi of others.

So would I have done anything different, I have o en wondered that, somehow I don’t think I would. I think she knew that although her inner resources were gone she hoped for the protec on of other resources.

I know that that was the turning point in her life, and that she lived and learned, and like the unfurling of the petals of a flower she did find her way towards beauty again.

MY TEN MINUTE STORY ‐ LYN BARNETT

The U3A Mid North Writers Group meets every first Wednesday of the Month at the Morley Library at 2pm.

It is an a ernoon where we write, we listen, and we comment on the wri ngs of others. We share informa on about new Books/Films and yes, we do a li le homework in prepara on for the next mee ng.

An example of our wri ngs is “If” wri en by a member especially for Inform.

The scorching heat, The roar as a thousand jumbo jets As darkness blackened stricken towns With s fling smoke to quell your very breath.

The storm swept on, Ten kilometres in as many minutes‐ No me to gather treasures or look back. Just flee in any way you can.

A na on learnt, with anguished disbelief By Na onal media: By silver screen and broadcast voice Of devasta on and destruc on. And then, from every corner of this wondrous land,

Hearts swelled and fellow feeling, Came forth a mighty flood of aid To stand by Aussies in their hour of need. To simply lend a helping hand.

‘You just get in and do what you can do.’ The volunteers appeared, as if by magic, To feed the hungry flocks or house the homeless, With clothes to clad the back of those Who owned but what they stood in.

We saw, on those same silver screens, A hug‐and flee ng solace in another’s arms. A tear‐stained face‐when all was lost, For someone missing or a loved one gone.

And men and women came from far and wide To fight the holocaust with grim determina on With courage and with hearts of pure gold. A word was never truer than to call them heroes. Not just today, but for some me to come, Our challenge: to restore their lives And heal their hearts and minds. We will not fail And I for one, have never been so proud To be an Aussie Ann Magtengaard Mid‐North

MONGOLIA & SIBERIA

The March edi on of the U3A Western Suburbs Newsle er promised members an interes ng programme of talks for the month, commencing with Judith Amey’s talk on Monday 11th recoun ng stories from her Mongolian & Trans‐Siberian Railway trip in 2018. Then an ar cle in the Subiaco Post the weekend before had a more detailed resume of the trip, together with a coloured photo of costumed Mongolian archers, to tempt a wider audience to join us at the Grove Library for Judith’s talk.

My personal interest in hearing about Judith’s travels was because my daughter Linden and her husband, Peter Hall, had also gone on the Trans‐Siberian Railway back in 1987, during the Soviet era. Many years later they lived and worked in Beijing 2006‐2008 when Peter was involved in Mongolian civil engineering projects. My family heard details and saw many photographs of their travels during this me, and Judith’s story was just as exci ng!

She was part of a small group tour that flew from Australia to Beijing, then on to Ulaan Baatar, the capital of Mongolia, to watch the NAADAM FESTIVAL. This is an ancient fes val showing off the skills of Archery, Horseracing and Wrestling by both men and women athletes, and young jockeys, as well as street parades and many marches.

A er the fes val the group drove by bus out into the desert for a few days in a GER – the Mongolian name for circular canvas and la ce‐wood ‘tent’ which we mostly know by its Russian name ‘YURT’ where they shared some of the local people’s nomadic life‐style. Some glorious photos of the green country‐side were shown, surprising many of us who were expec ng sandy deserts, and Judith’s photos of some of the wild animals here (Przewalski’s horses, Argali sheep, Demoiselle cranes, Steppe eagles amongst others) took my breath away! Judith’s power‐point presenta on and verbal descrip ons were absolutely magic and held the large audience spellbound.

A er Naadam, the group flew to SIBERIA, and were accommodated in the city of Irkutsk, for their Lake Baikal adventures, before finally boarding the train for the Trans‐Siberian trip to Moscow.

Time was running out for this sec on of Judith’s talk, and people had lots of ques ons to ask, so I hope we can hear more about this amazing train trip at a later date.

Thank you Judith for a truly fascina ng talk! Yvonne Doncaster

ROCKINGHAM VISIT TO OPTUS STADIUM

It has been a long me tradi on that the Rockingham U3A Region holds ou ngs on the fi h Friday of the month. On 29th March 2019 thirteen members travelled by train to Elizabeth Quay and then boarded the Li le Ferry to Optus Stadium for a tour of the facility. The boat ride was in itself interes ng with the very quiet engine and the views of the rapidly expanding

East Perth area, together with a close‐up view of the Matagarup Bridge before passing under the magnificent structure.

A first glance at the Optus Stadium gives the impression that it is covered in dark wooden boards, but one realises that that it is rust‐coloured metal which acknowledges the colours of the Western Australia outback and the source of much of the State’s mineral wealth. The stadium has been designed to cater for AFL, Cricket, Rugby League, Rugby Union and concerts featuring interna onal stars.

The first port of call was the locker rooms of the Fremantle Dockers including their change rooms where players can jump straight into an ice bath or a jacuzzi a er the game. We were also shown the small auditorium where

the coach addresses the team and play back footages of their and their opponents footage on a large screen.

Seats in the stadium are larger than normal, being about the size of a Premium Economy seat on a plane. There are also 1000 TV screens throughout the venue showing the event, meaning you don't need to miss a second of the ac on when you go to get a drink or use the toilet. In addi on, there is a giant 340 square metre scoreboard screen at each end of the stadium. It is claimed that they are the largest in the southern hemisphere.

Not only is it a fan‐friendly stadium, but the venue is also a rac ve to corporate and V.I.P. guests. There are 200 premium seats that feature electric recline and look and feel more like airline business class seats than something you'd find in an arena.

In the so‐called “Locker Room", which is a bar and entertainment space on the ground level, V.I.P.’s can enjoy hospitality while watching the teams warm up behind a glass wall. When it's me for the game to start, the players will actually run out to the ground through this space. This is the only space of its kind in the country and the only other one in the world belongs to the Dallas Cowboys' AT&T Stadium.

Perhaps the most desired spot at the stadium is the hospitality suite behind the coaches’ boxes, where guests can watch the coaches in ac on during games. The audio from the box is even piped into the room if it is allowed by the coach.

The tour ends at the Sky View Lounge, a bar and event space on the top level. The highlight here is not the playing field but features a large outdoor terrace, looking out across the Swan River with beau ful views of Perth City. It's a per nent way to complete a tour of Australia's newest major spor ng venue.

JOONDALUP JOTTINGS

Tour of the Water Police in Fremantle

On the 6th of March our Happy Wanderers Group paid a visit to the WA Water Police in Fremantle. As per usual we took the train to get there, the last bit walking up and down some “hilly” terrain. Our tour guide was officer Packard, who was also a

diver, currently injured and on light duty. We learned that this unit is responsible for the whole of WA since the unit up north had closed last year. They do search and rescue, respond to flare sigh ngs, Marine Radio listening watch 24/7, diving opera ons including in old mine sha s and some mes very murky waters, mari me inves ga ons, stolen vessels and motor enquiries. Unfortunately we could not get onto a boat for safety reasons but learned quite a lot.

+55 Seniors Expo at Lakeside Joondalup

On the 6th of February 2019 U3A Joondalup region took part in the +55 Seniors Expo at Lakeside shopping centre in Joondalup. The day started before 8am with se ng up the display and went officially from 9.30am to 2.15pm. Every hour 2 different members of U3A Joondalup region “manned” our stall and the whole exercise was a huge success! Many people came to talk to us and we got quite a few new members. Our Art group and the book clubs a racted the most a en on but there was a lot of interest also in all our other ac vi es.

Most of my working life has been in administra on in the not‐for‐profit sector. I have a Bachelor of Business in Accoun ng and Management gradua ng in 2003 as a mature age student, a ending university at the same me as my youngest daughter.

Since re ring I have been fortunate to have a number of overseas trips, I enjoying discovering the world and seeing sights I never thought I’d see.

As President I want to see City Courses increase back to previous numbers and the management systems go online to relieve the workload on the ever diminishing volunteers in the office. Be er s ll I would like to see more members volunteer in the office.

COULD YOU BE THE NEXT INFORM EDITOR

I have nominated for the Posi on of President of Council, if I am elected, I don’t feel I will have the me to dedicate to the

posi on of Editor of Inform or for ma er that it is appropriate either.

With this in mind Council is looking for a new editor for our very popular magazine. I am prepared to assist a new editor as

they feel their way. There is a procedure for the posi on and this will be up to date ready for the new person when they

commence. It is hoped that there would be a new person ready to publish Issue 135 due out by the end of July. I have set

an early deadline to giver the new editor more me to prepare the magazine to go to the printers in the first week of July.

I have found the posi on very interes ng and informa ve. It has given me the opportunity to learn more about U3A both

our U3A (UWA) as well as the worldwide organisa on. I have met some lovely and very dedicated people who volunteer so

readily of their me. This ensures that our U3A provides the membership with informa ve and interes ng programs in the

way of City Courses, seminars, City lectures and a variety of other interes ng social occasions and supports the regions to

provide local and interes ng programmes that meet their local needs.

If you think you might be interested in being the editor there will be a lot of support from Council and myself to make you

feel ready and able to do the job. Skills required are compu ng, with knowledge of a desktop publisher program, but in

fact the magazine has been published in Word prior to me taking on the job. I just feel a desktop publisher program

provides more flexibility for innova on.

Please contact me or your delegate or any member of council if you are interested in giving it a go. You will find it very

rewarding. We hope to hear from you very soon.

Denise Beer Editor.

U3A (UWA) 2019 PHOTO AWARDS

Photography Compe on Winners

Congratula ons to the winners of the compe on and our very great thanks to Cyrus Roussilhes for his work in judging the entries and his very thorough and informa ve comments. Cyrus has also donated the prizes. Each one of the top 3 winners and the two honourable men ons will receive one VIP pass to any Perth Learn Photography session of their choice, under 3 hours.

Cyrus’ comments for the winners are below, and the complete entries and comments will be displayed on U3A (UWA) Facebook and web page at our discre on.

First Prize went to Robyn McMahon.

Notes: Very good composi on, well balanced colour, highly interes ng subject ma er. Ligh ng is great. Clarity is spot on. Normally prone to clu er, however the detail works in this photo. Very good study on new growth a er bushfire.

Second Prize went to Peter Browne

Notes: Excellent focus, good example of a panorama. Good ligh ng on pelicans. Improvement would be to straighten the je y and allow for the buildings to be included in the image.

Third Prize went to Glenyse Robins‐Ward

Notes: Difficult shot to master. There is great detail in much of the image. The sky has great detail as well. Interes ng light flare coming from the lighthouse and good use of complimentary colour – lighthouse being red and sky being blue. Poten al room for a bronze men on if the image was submi ed at a higher resolu on.

Honourable Men ons (HM)

Ginie Bristowe: Notes: Well exposed background, subject a li le dark. The subjects head intersects too much with the dark colour of the background. A clever easy fix is to show from higher. Another sugges on is to shoot face on for portraits or to get closer. The closer you get with a smart phone the more the background is blurry.

Glenyse Robins‐Ward: Notes: Good perspec ve. Minimal reflec on on glass. White balance and nt are subjec ve. however, this could appeal to a good range of people. Original and interes ng reflec on on the water surface.

A further compe on will be announced soon. Gary Triffi
