Informal letters - LanguageTuesday

Informal letters are written using a friendly, chatty style which includes the use of contractions and less formal words and expressions.

Have a read through the letter and record all the informal words or phrases used.

Now re-write the letter using the only informal language.

Contracted words, also known as contractions are short words made by putting two words together. Letters are omitted in the contraction and replaced by an apostrophe. E.g. do not don’t, could not couldn’t. Make sure the apostrophe is placed where the missing letter(s) go.

Thursday

Planning – Today we will be planning an informal letter, which could be from the grandfather or any of the soldiers to their family, showing what they witnessed during the war.

Watch the clip and make notes about what events happened during the war that he may want to write about.

Planning (continued)

What are some of the grandfather’s or the soldiers’ experiences that they would like or be allowed to share with their family and loved ones?

Papers flutter to the ground around the fallen men, are these the letters to their loved ones?There are some possibilities here about the significance of the letters:

• They are the grandfather’s letters showing what he witnessed during the war;

• His chest says that he was the quartermaster. Perhaps these letters were left with him whilst their owners went off and were killed. All that is left of them is the letters. Is this why they are portrayed as paper men in the animation?
