ENGLISH READING PROGRAMME NHJS English Reading Programme Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him. ~ Maya Angelou
In NationalHigh Jakarta School, we strive to push our students to thirst for learning, to learn for the sake of learning, to be passionate about knowing all we can about the world we live in. As we work with you to encourage students to learn, we would like to ask for your support as we continue to develop a Reading Program that we hope encourages our students to explore the world through books. Scholastic LitPro It is our pleasure to inform you that NationalHigh Jakarta School will be working with the Scholastic Literacy Pro reading program for Primary and Lower Secondary students.
LitPro is a two-fold program where students are required to read with the objective of individualizing reading programs to suit each student’s needs. It is a reading exercise for students where their reading comprehension skills are developed from their current abilities to more proficient levels, consulting with the teacher only if needed. Apart from reading the suggested materials, the students will also need to evaluate their skills with a set of multiple-choice questions. The passages and the questions will increase in difficulty as the child progresses in the program.
NationalHigh will be working closely with Scholastic with the objective of supporting the varying reading comprehension abilities. The Library will acquire most of the books needed for the program for our students to borrow as needed. With the modification to the current reading program, purchasing books in our recommended reading list is no longer mandatory. In its place, we are requiring all students to subscribe to Scholastic LitPro so they can avail of the reading program and the wider variety of books that are included in it for a modest annual fee of IDR 250,000. The fee is MANDATORY for Primary 1 to Secondary 2 students.
Reading is critical in developing communication and life skills. Therefore, students will have protected reading time every week to monitor their progress in the program. For Our More Avid Readers For our more avid readers who want to read books other than what’s in the program, the English Department will continue to provide suggested books for your child’s grade level and Lexile scores. English Learning Facilitators have come together to create a reading list designed to inspire and interest students in each level. These books are not our end-goals but rather our starting points as we nudge our children back to the enjoyment of the written word. The benefits of reading are just too good to ignore: mental stimulation, stress reduction, knowledge, vocabulary expansion, memory improvement, stronger analytical thinking skills, improved focus and concentration, better writing skills, tranquility and free entertainment. Each grade level has the opportunity to taste different kinds of books through our Recommended Book Lists. This exposes our students to different writing styles about different subjects from an array of recognized children's book writers. This will be their smorgasbord from which we hope they find a favourite writer or two (or three or more!) or perhaps a favored genre or book series that will entice them to read more! Books from the class list are NOT MANDATORY reading but highly recommended for avid readers and families who would like to develop their personal libraries. We encourage you to take advantage of the supplementary list as you choose additional books for your child to read. We believe that there is really no such thing as too many books on our shelves, only more opportunities to learn and develop our thinking. We would like our students to take advantage of all these and we hope to have you on board with us as we guide them towards this goal. The beauty of reading is not lost as most people claim, it is waiting for us to find it again.

All students must report in their complete school uniform.
Students are to report to school by 7.15am and the dismissal times are as follows:

CAR PICK & DROP OFF For 'drop off' and 'pickup' please note that the front gate into the school is reserved strictly for
Drivers of Secondary students (maroon car sticker) while the back gate is for Primary students (orange car sticker). An orange car sticker will be issued to Parents who have children in both the Primary and Secondary. Cars with grey sticker can pick up or drop off students at either the back gate or the front gate.
For the 1st two weeks of school, it may take about 20-30 minutes to clear all cars during
dismissal times due to drivers needing time to be familiar with our traffic flow. We seek you understanding on this. Do help us by reminding your drivers not to hold up traffic at our drive way by parking or waiting on the drive way. Do remind your drivers to cooperate with our security when they are asked to drive away to make another round and come back for your child again.
School will give ‘PICKUP LABEL NAME’ for each student and it will be included in the starter
pack. Please put this label on your car dashboard for facilitating pickup system. There are three types of color: White color (P1-P2), Pink color (P3-P4), Green color (P5-P6), Blue color (Secondary) and Orange color (Junior College).

SCHOOL/VISITOR ID Parents or nannies/ drivers have to wear school /visitor ID when they enter the school ground. No entry for unauthorized personnel beyond this designated waiting area. Kindly secure the ID from the security should you need to meet any of our school staff.
PRANK CALLERS We will continue to remind and warn you about unscrupulous individuals who will prank call parents to extort money. These individuals will continue to prey on parents using scenarios that their son/daughter are involved in an accident in the school and is seriously injured. They will lure parents to transfer money at the quickest possible time so that medical attention will be given to their son’s/daughter’s life threatening injury. Although we have constantly reminded our parents regarding this ploy, parents who receive calls like these still feel unsettled until they get the confirmation from the school that nothing happened to their son/daughter. Therefore, the school would like to emphasize and advises parents that should anything happen to your child in school, our school nurse or their Class Mentor will be informing you of the accident and not just any individual. Please also take note that our school provides insurance coverage for all our students and do not require any transfer of funds for medical treatment if an accident takes place in School. Lastly, please make it a point to verify the incident by calling the school back using the known school number (021 589-02962).
