InfrastructureShort routes, getting you there quickly – that‘s what Griesheim stands for. The road network within the town is well-developed, accessible and easy to navigate. Modern local bypasses such as the South, North and West ring roads connect the industrial areas directly with Darmstadt and the A5 and A7 motorways – an ideal connection to the international road network. Frankfurt International Airport and Darmstadt’s main railway station are easy to reach.

History of GriesheimSince the Neolithic (young stone age) man settled down in our communal district.
Archaeological finds from roman, alemannic and franconian ages where found in the ground. All the people who passed the Rhine valley knew the strategically convenient loca-tion of Griesheim.
The first documented mentioning was in the year 1165 in a deed of gift by the emperor Friedrich Barbarossa.
At the foyer of the city hall, you can have a look on some of the archaeolo-gical finds.
Until the 19. century people lived from wine-growing and peat-har-vesting. Today asparagus, onions and other vegetables are “the roots of Griesheim”.
With over 28,000 inhabitants, Griesheim is the largest town in the Darmstadt-Dieburg rural district and is in the heart of the Rhein-Main-Neckar area. Griesheim stretches across an area of 2,155 hectares, bordering on the leisure areas of Hessisches Ried, Hessiche Bergstraße and Odenwald. Two motorway junctions mean that Griesheim is ideally connected to the Rhein-Main-Neckar metropolitan area and to Frankfurt International Airport.

The white english daisy tells about the court of Griesheim, also in the past times. The goosefoot descends from the Tyr-rune, the sym-bol of freedom and advancement.

Recreational valueGriesheim is a town to relax in. Forests provide an excellent oppor-tunity for a long stroll, while the flat landscape is ideal for cycling. Plenty of sports facilities, jogging routes and two swimming pools encourage you to get active. Enjoy summers in the outdoor pool, winters in the indoor pool and sauna. In Griesheim it‘s not a problem. There are also well-equip-ped playgrounds for children spread throughout the town.
The town‘s clubs and societies are also very important in Griesheim. Youth work is an important part of this. There‘s a good reason why, for example, the TuS Griesheim triath-letes swim, cycle and run at national level.
Events and celebrationsGriesheim really knows how to party: countless events and festivals offer the ideal opportunity to get to know Griesheim and its people. Three beau-tiful community centres are available for private parties.

The Griesheimer ZwiebelmarktEvery autumn since 1978 Griesheim celebrates the “Zwiebelmarkt”.
Zwiebelmarkt means “onion market” and it´s well known all over the south of Hessian.
The last weekend in September brings music, joy and fun to the main street of Griesheim.
Here you´ll find food and beve-rages from different countries and you can meet old and new friends.

Senior centre Haus WaldeckThe Haus Waldeck residential and nursing home is a home for elderly people in need of short and long term nursing care. There are 120 apart-ments for elderly people nearby. These residents can also use the services provided by Haus Waldeck. The local churches are very active in Griesheim and make a significant contribution to social cooperation and mutual assistance in everyday life.
Town-twinningGriesheim is twinned with cities all over Europe. In the north of France is our twin town Bar-le-Duc, in East Germany is Wilkau-Haßlau located, in Hungary lies Gyönk, in Italy we´re twinned with Pontassieve nearby Florence.

Friday is market day!Every friday, early in the morning, the market suppliers open their stalls with fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers and loads of other products from our region. The friday´s market is an important part of life in Griesheim.
Here you can shop fresh food for the week-end, have a cup of coffee at the market square, meet other people and just have a good time. Even people from other cities come over to buy the fine products.

The Council Meeting, except for the Mayor/Mayoress who´s elected directly by the citizens, elects the members of the Municipal City Authorities.
