It really is P i c t u r e P erfe c t ! Rolling countryside, panoramic vistas, sandy beaches, historic buildings, country roads under a woodland canopy, scenic public and private gardens, quaint villages with gift shops and galleries and everywhere friendly island folk. Located 30 minutes east of Sault Ste. Marie, St. Joseph Island is accessible by way of a free bridge. The St. Joseph Island Chamber of Commerce invites you to come and spend time on our beautiful Island. Observe the abundant wildlife in their natural habitat. A favourite stopping spot of travelers for over 200 years, come and enjoy its natural beauty or one of the many festivals and events that happen throughout the year. Welcome To... St. Joseph Island is the second largest inhabited fresh water island in the world. St. Joseph Island is home to the largest producer of maple syrup in Ontario. St. Joseph Island is home to the Twin Trees, a natural wonder... two independent tree trunks joined together by a common branch. Fort St. Joseph was originally constructed in 1796 and today its ruins are a National Historic Site. The area between Johnson Point on Neebish Island and Sailors’ Encampment on St. Joseph Island is one of the narrowest points of the Great Lakes shipping system. St. Joseph Island is the northern most point of the Niagra Escarpment. Home of the famous “Puddingstone” (Jasper Conglomerate) St. Joseph Island Trivia Throughout the seasons, St. Joseph Island offers many things to see and do. In Springtime, marvel at the acres of trilliums carpeting the forest floor between the hardwoods. Watch the syrup producers as they tap the trees and collect sap before boiling it down to produce the best maple syrup in the world. Sample the fruits of their labour by dining at Gilbertson’s Pancake House or attending the local Royal Canadian Legion, Maple Syrup Festival. Stand on the shores of Sailor’s Encampment or climb the viewing stand at the St. Joseph Island Marine Park at Stribling Point and watch ocean going “saltys” or thousand foot “lakers”, en route to the locks at Sault Ste. Marie pass, within a stone’s throw. In Summer, Take a journey back in time to explore the ruins of old Fort St. Joseph or view a movie and other displays in the new reception centre. Take a stroll through the pleasant grounds of Adcock’s Woodland Gardens or drive the tree-lined highway and bi-ways and catch glimpses of the numerous deer and other wildlife that inhabit the island. Tour the St. Joseph Island Museum complex and gain some insight into how the original Indian tribes and first white settlers managed to survive in this, then remote area. In August taste the Island’s famous sweet corn. In Fall, view the maple, oak, beech and other deciduous trees in all their glorious colours. Watch as Canada geese, Sandhill cranes and other migratory birds gather in large flocks prior to their annual flight south. Join hundreds of other bow and rifle hunters in what has become one of the most successful deer harvests in North America. In Winter, cross country ski one of the groomed trails or break new paths across fields of virgin snow. Snowmobile from your doorstep on over 160 km of groomed trails or follow the treeline out across the ice to either Drummond Island, Michigan or the mainland and the Ontario trail system.
