Welcome to the University Duisburg-Essen
Dear freshman students,
In order to start off on the right food we have prepared a small brochure with useful hints
for your Master study. You should read it carefully so that not only your questions become
clarified but particularly to save your nerves. Even from the beginning you should think
about your course of studies. But more on this later.
We wish you a good start to a successful study.

Transport systems und logistics
1. Wherefrom do I get the most important information?
In order to master your study you have to revert to several sources for your information. The
most important ones are the examination regulations, the module guide, the TUL
homepage, the LSF and the website of the examination office. The content of the single
sources and how to find them is explained in the following chapters.
1.1. Homepage of the chair
In order to cope with the study Logistics Engineering one website is particularly important
for you, the homepage of our chair which you can find under the link www.uni-due.de/tul.
There, amongst others, you can find the following information:
Lectures offered by our chair
Where and when they are lectured
Which subjects are generally selectable for your course of studies
The examination regulations (see below)
The module guide (see below)
Study material
Contact details of the chair including staff
And much more further information
We recommend you to visit this website regularly and to look especially after “news in
brief”.

1.2. Examination regulations
For your study the examination regulations determine the subjects that have to be chosen
and how are the formalities until finishing your study. In the regulations the compulsory and
the elective subjects are listed.
The examination regulations can be found under the following link:http://www.uni-
due.de/imperia/md/content/tul/vbl_2011_33_pruefungsordnung_technische_logistik.pdf
Read these regulations completely at the beginning of your study in order to avoid an
unpleasant surprise and to be able to plan your course of studies. But more on that later.
1.3. The module guide
The already mentioned modules in the examination regulations are specified in the module
guide. There you can not only read the content of the lecture but also of which subjects this
module consists of, how the examination looks like, whether you need previous knowledge
and how much effort is necessary for this module.
The module guide can be found under the following link: https://www.uni-
due.de/imperia/md/content/tul/modulhandbuch_tl_korrigiert_060315.pdf
The LSF (lesson, study, research)
The LSF is the administrative system of our university which provides many important
functions. The web address is: www.lsf.uni-due.de/ and the site should look like this:
You can switch to english by clicking on the flag on the right site of the page. If you click on
„Lectures“ and there on the left „ Search for lectures“ then a query form appears with which
you can not only find lectures but also the appropriate information, e.g. start of the lecture
or the responsible person for this lecture.
This site is mainly relevant for lectures you want to attend to and that are not offered by the
chair Transport systems and logistics. Further information on these lectures can mostly be
3
found on the homepages of the each with responsible chairs which can be found by theses
information.
With the aid of this site you can also prepare your study plan. Though at the beginning of
the semester a study plan is released by the students council but it may be that some
lectures have been started before. So search here for lectures and make use of the TUL
website. Then nothing should go wrong.
Registering for exams
On the homepage of LSF you have to type in your user name and password. Then you will
see the field for registering for the exams. When you are logged-in correctly you should see
“My functions” and on the left „Administration on exams“. When you click on this button
you will see the following options:
Within the time for registering that is predetermined by the examination office you can
register for the exams in the description field „Apply for exams“. After accepting the
conditions for online registration you can look for the subject you want to register for and
there you have to click on „register “. In the following window you have to confirm this once
again and then you will get the information that your exam registration is entered. After that
you have the possibility to register for further exams or to leave the website. An overview of
all registered exams can be found under „Info on Exams (internships)“.
Sometimes it can happen that one subject can be listed several times in the structure. Then
it doesn’t matter which of them you choose for registration. The main thing is that you
register for exactly one possibility.
If you can’t find your subject in the structure, you have to visit the „examination office“ in
order to register there. More on this later.
Later you will find your marks and number of attempts at passing the examination under
,,Registered Exams ". This scheme can be printed. But it has to be considered that some
information about credit points is from old examination regulations and so the grade point
average could be falsified.
4
1.4. The examination office
The website of the examination office can be found under the following link:
http://www.uni-due.de/verwaltung/pruefungswesen/startseite.shtml
Under „Studiengänge“ you arrive on several ways to the website of your study Logistics
Engineering where you will find all information about exams (one possibility is to click on
„Studiengänge“ and after that on „ Bachelor-/Masterstudiengänge“ ). There is not only a
plan of when and where the exams will take place but also further information about times
of registration and deregistration.
There is mostly a period of two weeks for registering. You can deregister in written form up
to 8 days before the exam without giving reasons.
For questions regarding examination administration first of all please look at
http://www.uni-due.de/verwaltung/pruefungswesen/faq.php. There are many questions to
be answered.
Mrs. Ludwig is responsible for the study „Logistics Engineering“. If you want to visit her
personally please consider her talk times:
Mondays: 13.00-15.00 pm
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday: 9.00 am to noon
On the left side of the entrance there is a box where you can take a ticket and wait till Mrs.
Ludwig calls you. If you want to register there for an exam that is not listed in the structure
tree of the online registration, Mrs. Ludwig will give you a form that you have to fill in with
the following information: Exam, Examiner and date of exam. You have to give this form
back to Mrs. Ludwig.
1.5. Further sources of information
You can also find our chair on Facebook under the name „ TUL“. Take a look on our site and
press the „like it“ button.
In addition there is an App of our University, called „myUDE“. It can really facilitate everyday
life. Further information can be found under the following link: http://www.uni-
due.de/myude/

2. „Am I right here?“
Here is a map in order to find your way on the campus Duisburg:
On the location plan can be seen that this campus consists of two different areas. The M
area and the L area. Most lectures take place in the M area. Each area has a canteen and a
library. But the library of the L area is the main library and it is considerably bigger than the
one in the M area. Further information about the libraries, e.g. opening hours and the
inventory catalogue can be found under http://www.uni-due.de/ub/ .
You can find the current menu of the favored canteen under
http://www.studentenwerk.essen-duisburg.de/ „Speisepläne“. In canteen and cafeteria you
should always pay with your student card, because so you will get reduced prices. Useful
information about the student card can be found under https://www.uni-
due.de/studierendensekretariat/studierendenausweis.shtml
A further area is on Bismarckstraße. On the following location plan not only this area but
also the location of the SK building can be seen where the chair of Transport systems and
logistics is located (red arrow).
6
Some modules take place in Essen, e.g. of the field of economic and transport geography
and traffic systems. About the journey you don’t need to worry, there are several
possibilities:
First is to use public transport. The ride is free of cost with your student card. Under
www.vrr.de you can look for the nearest stop. These are drawn in the location plan. Another
possibility is to choose the bus provided by the University. It shuttles between both
locations. More information can be found under http://www.uni-
due.de/verwaltung/pendelbus.php

3. The curriculum
As you have certainly seen in the examination regulations the study Logistics Engineering
consists of compulsory and elective subjects:
Compulsory sector with the main topic „Technische Logistik“, 30 ECTS have to be
performed in 2 modules with 15 ECTS each.
Elective sector in engineering terms with the main topic „Gestaltung von
Logistiksystemen“, 15 ECTS have to be performed by selection of 3 modules with 5
ECTS each and the main topic „Methoden der Logistik“, 15 ECTS have to be
performed by selection of 3 modules with 5 ECTS each.
Interdisciplinary obligatory elective subjects with the main topics economic and
transport geography, traffic systems and economic science, it has to be performed a
total of 24 ECTS.
Non logistic elective sector, it has to be performed a total of 6 ECTS “
(An excerpt from examination regulations)
If you want to study in the prescribed period of study you should achieve approx. 30 credits
per semester.
In each case you should start your study with some compulsory subjects. When starting in
winter semester you could select the subjects „Innerbetrieblicher Materialfluss“,
„Außerbetrieblicher Transport“ and „Informationssysteme der Logistik“. When starting in
summer semester you could select „Produktion und Fertigung“ and „Arbeitswissenschaft“.
Theoretically you can select immediately the case study, but for processing this study it is
advantageous to have logistical basic knowledge, which you should have after attending the
lessons of „Innerbetrieblicher Materialfluss“ und „Außerbetrieblicher Transport“. You can
start with the case study in each semester. More on this later.
Additionally you should select modules from the elective sector in engineering terms so that
10 to 15 credit points can be achieved. Furthermore a subject from the interdisciplinary
elective sector can be chosen.
In the second semester the subjects of the second compulsory sector should be chosen. For
students who have started in winter semester the subjects from „Management von
Logistiksystemen“ and for those who started in summer semester the subjects from
„Material flow and Transport systems“ would be relevant.
This semester should also be added by subjects from the elective sector in engineering
terms. The number depends on the selection of obligatory elective subjects.
We recommend you to plan your complete selection at the beginning of your study. Because
most lectures are either offered in winter or in summer semester and sometimes the single
modules are distributed over two semesters, so that, e.g., you start in summer semester and
have to add the second part in winter semester.
9
For the selection some rules have to be considered:
There is an overview of all options, where is listed which subjects can be chosen in
which sector (look at “subject overview “ (Fächerübersicht) on the Tul-Homepage).
When you want a module to be acknowledged you have to ensure that you achieve
the 6 credits per module. It is not possible to take a subject in
“Wertschöpfungsmanagement” with 3 credits and another one in
“Produktionsmanagement” with 3 credits. But you can choose 2 subjects with 3
credit points each from the “Wertschöpfungsmanagement” sector.
Each module can be chosen only once. You can for example not be credited 12 credit
points in the field of production management.
There is also the opportunity to be credited internships that were not part of your previous
studies. Also participating in the competition "Logistics Masters" is rewarded in this course
with credit points. More information can be found in the list of choices.
In the non logistic area, you may freely choose your acknowledgement. The main thing is
that it has nothing to do with logistics. For example, look what offers the Institute for
optional studies or even do a language course.
Dates, e.g., the start of the lecture period of our University can be found under
http://www.uni-due.de/zentralverwaltung/semestertermine.shtml
Don’t forget to re-register! The re-registration period can be found under the above
mentioned link. Detailed information about the re-registration procedure can be found
under: http://www.uni-due.de/studierendensekretariat/rueckmeldung.shtml
