What is Enhanced Data Recovery?
A backup and restore architecture that combines advanced software functionality with a disk based storage array to augment a traditional tape only solution.
Enables the concept of “Backup to disk, archive to tape”.

Definitions
Recovery Point – amount of time that has elapsed since the last known consistent copy of the data
Recovery Time – amount of time required to gain access to the data
Backup Window – amount of time available where production servers can be impacted by backup activity
Information Means The World.Information Means The World.
Business Drivers• Growing storage capacities and rising
downtime costs• Pressure to reduce recovery time (RTO)• Pressure to minimize data loss (RPO)• Operations issues
– Shrinking backup windows– Reliability issues in large environments
• Media costs & media management getting out of control
We are seeing a dramatic rise in the cost and complexity of backup operations

What’s wrong with traditional backups?
• Slow restore capabilities• Reliability issues• Shrinking backup windows• Tape is a sequential access device
– Data written in a linear fashion– Seek times to find data are very time
consuming– Cartridge load times are high– Compression limited to linear algorithms

Enhanced Data Recovery is the Solution
• Enabled by falling disk prices (ATA & SATA)
• Also enabled by mature, advanced software functionality
• Leverages performance, reliability, and random access nature of RAID
• Augments tape capabilities

Backup to Disk
Recovery Point –Similar to enterprise backup to tape, however, improvement in reliability yields lower average recovery point.
Recovery Time – Full restore similar to tape, however, significant improvement for single files
Backup Window – Improvements in some scenarios, including situations where tape drives are not streamed, or when reliability problems cause frequent job restarts

Backup to Disk Solution
Benefits: Drawbacks:•Fast file level restores –
improved productivity and less downtime
•Improves backup reliability – less exposure to lost data and improved staff productivity
•Reduction in tape resources – lower tape media costs
•Disk medium supports simultaneous reads and writes enabling real time cloning and restores during backup
•Typically no compression capabilities
•Can be disruptive to backup operation
•No reduction in IP network traffic
•Minimal benefit for full restores
•Enterprise backup software support for disk evolving

Recovery Point – Similar to enterprise backup to tape, however, improvement in reliability yields lower average recover point.

Backup Window – Results will vary based upon environmental variables. In some cases, TE yields dramatic backup window benefits. In others, little to no benefit.

Tape Emulation SolutionBenefits: Drawbacks:•Compression capabilities•Non-disruptive to current
policies and procedures – no impact on productivity and lower TCO
•Fast file level restores•Minimized fragmentation
and file system management
•Improves backup reliability•I/O tuned for sequential
large block transfer•Enables reduction in tape
resources – lower cost•Can reduce backup time
•No reduction in IP network traffic
•Minimal benefit for full restores
•Proprietary layer of technology adds incremental cost and complexity

Point-in-time Copy
Recovery Point – reduced by splitting mirrors or taking snapshots
Recovery Time – Significantly reduced for full restore. Less convenient for file level restores, however.
Backup Window – If used as a foundation for off-host backup, PIT copy can greatly reduce the impact on production, allowing for backup within tight window

Point-in-time Copy SolutionBenefits: Drawbacks:•Backup processing
removed from production servers – less production impact improves TCO
•Backup impact reduced to minutes
•Fast full restores – improved productivity (RTO)
•Enables consolidation of backup resources – lower cost
•Improved recovery point capabilities – less data loss (RPO)
•May be disruptive to current backup policies and procedures
•May not reduce tape media or tape automation resources
•Integration effort can be somewhat complicated
Information Means The World.Information Means The World.
Replication Based Backup
Recovery Point – Minimized for asynchronous replication, no lost data for synchronous replication
Recovery Time – Short because of on-line copy which can be used for single file restore or used as the active file system
Backup Window – Actual backup can be performed off-host, making backup window a moot concept

Replication Based Backup SolutionBenefits: Drawbacks:
•More frequent backups with more copies kept online – improved RPO
•Reduces tape media and automation resources – lower cost
•Simplifies media management
•Fast file & full restores•Replication based backup
reduces IP network traffic•Shortest RPO & RTO when
combined with snapshots•Improved consistency and
reduced risk through centralization of remote backup
•Good foundation for DR
•Disruptive to current backup policies and procedures
•Integration effort is somewhat complicated

Summary• Enhanced data recovery incorporating disk
technology is now cost effective and drives measurable business value
• There are distinct architectural approaches to using disk for data recovery and it is critical to understand the relative strengths and weaknesses of each
• Disk based architectures are currently used to augment, not replace, tape infrastructure
