The task of this project is to visualize the information space of a given artifact. To

visualize information space is to explain the content, structure, and navigation of an artifact to a viewer who knows nothing about it. I was

given the website www.harmenliemburg.nl. After receiving it, I immediately began perusing

the website to get a grasp on its content, structure, and navigation.

The first impression I had of the site seems–now that I look back–to be correct. My

diagrams of the website are highly vertical with horizontal lines weaving across the vertical. I noticed the strong verticality of dynamic

movement right away. And then I noticed a horizontal tension that I began to feel as I

clicked on links reverting to other websites.

The following few diagrams are my attempt at encapsulating this

horizontal and vertical relationship.

I began to think of the interlacing of the horizontal and vertical as square blocks

(representing the imagery within the sections of the website) hanging on string and then the links to other sites crossing the strings

horizontally. Initially, I envisioned a poster to describe this website.

I began to count the number of images, projects, etc. to visualize the totality of the

layout of the site. The ‘Work’ section is overwhelmingly long. It contains 43 projects

and within each project listed, there is a whole photoessay explaining the process of design.

In this sketch, there are three projects listed with their corresponding numbers of images, text, and links. I was beginning to envision a

poster that went from the ceiling to the floor in order to list all of this information in its entirety.

At this point, I began to notice–and really appreciate–the personality that Harmen

Liemburg portrays in his website. His language is very informal and seems to be very

honest about the way that he designs his posters. In many instances as I was looking

at photoessays of his design process, I found myself laughing out loud. This is when

I decided that I would make a photoessay to describe this site. The rhythmic, vertical

movement of the site coupled with light conversational tone and the pleasure that

comes along with it became very apparent. I knew that if there was one thing I did, it would be to strongly convey these two things. I could

do this in poster form or time-based form. I knew that if I did a poster, it would be so

long it may not fit in the presentation room. A poster is also static, so it would not be read

in the same way as the photoessays are read on the site–one photo at a time. I decided to

take the video/time-based route and present a photoessay in the voice and tone of

Harmen Liemburg.

After a conversation with Dan, I decided to not only mimic Harmen’s tone of voice and

vertical information landscape, but I would also mimic his poster design process. Of course I wouldn’t be able to screenprint it, but I would mimic the look of screenprinting as much as possible.The poster would be a collection of

shapes and images that are found throughout the video photoessay.

A set of ground rules for form was established. I decided to use Ayuthaya–the typeface that Liemburg uses. I also decided to left justify

all of the images and text as it is justified on the website. The look of the photoessay will

represent the look of the website completely. The only difference will be the size–18 pt–of

readable text.

The photoessay will give an overview of the content, structure, and navigation of the site

while simultaneously being the platform for an event poster. The music will be very repetitious and will serve strictly as a rhythm to read and peruse images to. “Common Knowledge” by

Quantic is a nice fit. The event poster will be printed full size and displayed before the

viewing of the video so the viewer will already have a clue as to what the video is about.

Then, throughout the video, the viewer will be included with the construction of the poster as

shapes of objects used to create the poster are pulled from their respective images. There

will be a point in the video where the viewer grasps the concept being portrayed.

Like the festival audience is lured by the great stuff they expect to see there...

... black bears are attracted to that irresistible smell of (human) food.

On previous hikes in the American woods, the idea of being attacked and eaten myself(as a tasty Amsterdam city boy) totally freaked me out.

Last year, I took better precaution, and listened to the rangers. They told me tocarry a heavy backpackers’ bear-cache to lock away all ‘foodrelated items’...

Well, it worked! I really saw lots of bears, day and night, but boy, do they smell...

Indeed they do eat a lot. As a result have some serious bear-dung too!(Image from ‘Cowboy Henk trakteert! by Kama & Seele, Uitgeverij Loempia 1994)

It is also important to show an example of one of the photoessays within the ‘Work’ section

since it is the inspiration for the video and the underlying form for the whole website. I chose

the Graphic Design Festival Breda 2008 project because I felt like it did a good job of representing Harmen’s process, his lightness

of tone, and his quirky way of collecting ideas and objects to design posters with. Obviously, I

also wanted to get a laugh out of the viewer.

The main reason for inserting the ‘Profile’ photoessay was to highlight the fact that I am

directly mimic-ing Harmen’s tone of voice and his way of representing himself and his work. I showed the video to my roommate, Kelly, and she said that, thus far, she wasn’t making that

connection. So, putting his profile and showing that he introduces himself with “Hi! My name is Harmen Liemburg” in the same way that I

do at the beginning helps the viewer to make that connection. It also gives the viewer the

pertinent information for who/why this website was made.

Hi! My name is Harmen Liemburg.

I am a graphic designer, printmaker and occasional journalist based in Amsterdam.............................................................................................

Today imagination and storytelling are more important to me than the ‘objective’ truth,but making maps and diagrams absolutely inspired my current interest in graphic techniques.

There’s a lot of inspiration in historical traditions like the Japanese woodcuts.The amount of craftmanship, time and energy that are invested in those prints,are still like a beacon to me.

On the other side of the spectrum is the fleeting character of moderneveryday consumergoods, which I study with the same interest.

By trying woodblock printing during a 2004 masterclass with Hiroshi Watanabe,I found out that the technique of screenprinting definitely fits my needfor speed, scale and high output in a more efficient way...

The physical elements (touch, smell, layering) of screenprinted matter add adisctinctive richness to the work. Doing most of the silkscreen printsmyself at Kees Maas’ workshop/publishinghouse Interbellum, I’m free to experiment.

found in the website. In the video, this is scrolled through very rapidly but is still slow enough that the viewer understands what is being listed. These sections of the website

5concluding thoughts

As a conclusion, I am very content with the outcome of this project. In the past projects this semester, I wasn’t focused as much on the clarity of the message as I was with this

one. I feel like, because of my consistent ‘stepping into the shoes of my viewer’ this

project is successful. There are other ways I could have approached this project that I think

have the potential to be successful (i.e. the very long vertical poster), though, I feel like I made the right decision in representing this website in a time-based format with rhythm and vertical scrolling. The ideas I was trying to convey–I believe–were conveyed. I also think that the physical poster to be viewed

before and after the video was very effective. It allowed the viewer to pre-visit and re-visit the project. Because I have not gotten feedback yet, nor did we discuss these presentations individually, I am not completely sure where my strengths and weaknesses lie. I’m sure

there are things I could do to this project to make it more successful. Subjectively though,

I am happy with the result.
