Dear Colleagues, We offer to your attention the 35rd volume of the Informational

Materials on the Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums, which includes two volumes. This publication has been prepared by the EARAZA Zoo Informational Center (ZIC) based on the results of the analysis of the data provided by zoological institutions of the region.

The volume contains data on 120 collections of regional zoos and a separate section dedicated to significant zoo events, news and other activities that took place at the zoos, aquariums, breeding stations and other zoological organizations.

The volume also contains the latest data on the zoological collections of the CIS states, as well as some zoos of the Baltic states, Israel, Poland, Slovakia, Czech Republic and Bundesrepublik Deutschland.

To make the publication timely and useful, the member zoos are requested to keep to the deadline for submission of the materials to the EARAZA ZIC.

We would like to remind you that the information on your zoological institution, taxonomic inventories of the collections (according to the taxonomy recognized by our issues and including scientific names), as well as the data on breeding of animals as of the 1st of January of the current year, should be sent before the 1st of February. Please note that the data from the institutions that have not submitted the required information by the deadline will not be included in the next volume.

Also, please try to observe the deadline when sending logotypes and guidebooks of your zoos for the general information section, as well as the notes on the zoo news and articles on education and methodical activities.

Please be aware that proposals for the Appendices "Surplus and Wanted List of Animals" should be sent to the EARAZA ZIC twice a year, with the data being shown as of the 1st of January and of the 1st of July of the current year.

In 2015, the Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and Aquariums was guided by its action plan

and decisions adopted by the EARAZA annual conferences hosted by Brno Zoo (Czech Republic)

in 2013, Moscow Zoo in 2014 and Kosice Zoo (Slovakia) in 2015.

In 2015, the 21st annual conference of EARAZA was held from May 30 till June 7, 2015 and was

hosted by Kosice Zoo (Slovakia), which was celebrating its 35th jubilee. The closed session of the

EARAZA conference on June 2 was attended by 55 representatives of the zoos from 10 countries.

Reports of the Council and the Executive Office for 2014 were presented, the Action plan and the

budget for 2015 were discussed and adopted, some other current issues of the Association

activities, including the implementation of research projects, were also discussed and approved.

During the reporting period, one zoo was accepted as a candidate for EARAZA membership, one

institution was accepted as an associated member and one - as a full member of the Association.

At present, EARAZA comprises 86 institutions from 14 countries, including 60 full members, 14

associated members and 12 candidates for EARAZA membership.

The main attention in the work of the Association during this period was paid to continuing

education of the zoo staff, strengthening cooperation between the zoos, conservation of rare

species and participation of EARAZA zoos in conservation activities of international zoo

organizations, especially of World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), of which

EARAZA is an associated member, and EAZA (European Association of Zoos and Aquaria), of

which some EARAZA zoos are also members.

1. Training and education for zoo staff:

The following training workshops and conferences have been organized and held:

1) Readings and the scientific conference dedicated to the memory of Prof. A.G.

Bannikov and 100th anniversary of his birth date; the event was organized by

EARAZA, Moscow Zoo and Moscow Veterinary Academy and hosted by the latter

on April 24, 2015. More than 90 people were willing to attend the conference

(personally or via Internet) from various scientific, educational and nature

conservation institutions of 10 countries: Belarus, Bulgaria, Latvia, Mongolia,

Poland, Russia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Estonia. All in all, 79 people

representing 23 institutions, attended the conference, among them 3 members of

the Russian Academy of Science, 15 doctors of science, 16 professors and 27

candidates of science.

2) International scientific-practical conference “Birds: keeping, breeding and

veterinary medicine” was organized by the Vorobji Bird Park “Vorobji” and

EARAZA. It was held at the Vorobji Bird Park in the Kaluga region (Russia) on

September 28 – October 2, 2015. Its sessions, master-classes and round table

discussions, were attended by more than 60 representatives of 32 zoos and breeding

centers of 7 countries (Belarus, Kazakhstan, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Czech

Republic and Estonia).

3) International conference on education work in zoos, dedicated to the 150th

anniversary of the Leningrad Zoo, was held at St-Petersburg on November 16-20

2015. It was attended by 59 specialists from 27 zoos and oceanariums- EARAZA

members: from Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Estonia.

In 2015, EARAZA Information Centre arranged participation in the following events for

staff of EARAZA zoos:

4) Scientific and practical conference “Modern Zoo and Society”, dedicated to the 90th

anniversary of famous writer-naturalist Gerald Durrell’s birth was held at the Udmurtia Zoo

on April 20-22, 2015. It was attended by representatives from 14 cities of Russia: Moscow,

Belgorod, Sochi, Vladivostok, Perm, Yekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk, Kazan, Tambov, Seversk,

Smolensk, Samara, Penza, Rostov; and by some international participants from Estonia,

Czech Republic, Belarus.

5) Scientific and practical conference “Zoo in a Big City. Work experience.” (Yekaterinburg,

September 17-18, 2015) dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the Yekaterinburg Zoo.

6) Scientific and practical conference “Zoo as a Model of Harmony Between Nature and

Personality” (September 4-6, 2015 ) was hosted by the Kharkov Zoo and dedicated to its

120th anniversary. The conference was attended by the specialists from Moscow, Kiev,

Nikolaev, Odessa, Cherkassy and other zoos, as well as by the representatives of the

Biosphere Reserve “Askaniya-Nova” named after

F.E. Falz-Fein, the Poltava zoo “The Grandmother’s Yard”, zoo staff members from Rovno

and Lutsk zoos, and specialists from Odessa veterinary clinic “Romadan A.A.”.

7) International conference “Anseriformes of the Northern Eurasia: study, conservation and

rational use” (Salekhard, November 30 – December 6, 2015).

8) Scientific conference and master-classes on veterinary medicine of wild, zoo and exotic

animals, organized by the Russian College of Zoological Medicine (RCZM) together with the

Moscow Zoo, EARAZA, Roev Ruchey Park of Flora and Fauna, WVG “Cobra” and

VetEndoSchool VESKTM

. The conference was held on June 2-3 2015 and hosted by the Roev

Ruchey Park of Flora and Fauna, Krasnoyarsk.

9) VI International scientific-practical conference “Conservation of Biodiversity and game

management in Russia”. (Moscow, February 12-13 2015).

10) International scientific-practical and jubilee conference “TEC – 70 years: Modern commodity

research, methodology and practice”.

11) International ornithological conference of the Northern Eurasia. (Almaty, August 18-24,

2015).

12) International computer system of animals’ classification (ZIMS): 70 zoo staff members from

31 zoos of EARAZA participated in training sessions hosted by the Almaty, Kiev, Moscow

and Novosibirsk zoos, and also by the Park of Live Nature DoDo ( Anapa).

Publishing:

The 34th

Informational Issue of Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos and

Aquariums in two volumes (volume 1 – 230 and volume 2 – 501 pages,) 2015,

containing information on 115 zoos, aquariums and other zoological institutions from 17

countries (Russia, Israel, countries of the CIS, Baltic countries and countries of Eastern

Europe) was prepared for printing in two versions (Russian and English). The on-line

version is available at the EARAZA website, along with other publications of EARAZA:

http://earaza.ru, whereas the 1st volume was published in a paperback edition and sent out

to EARAZA member zoos and other zoological institutions of the region, as well as to the

Russian Book Chamber for further distribution to central and regional libraries.

Appendix 22 to the 34th

Informational Issue of Eurasian Regional Association of Zoos

and Aquariums containing the lists of surplus/wanted animals was prepared and

downloaded on the EARAZA website: www.earaza.ru . During each year the lists are

revised and updated based on the new data from EARAZA member zoos. This helps zoo

professionals in collection management, mobile formation of breeding groups and pairs,

and facilitates placement of offspring.

Modern issues of zoology, ecology and nature conservation. Papers of the readings and

scientific conference dedicated to the memory of Prof. A.G. Bannikov and 100th

anniversary of his birth. Moscow, April 24 2015, M.: State Autonomous Institution

Annual publication: “Birds of Prey and Owls in Zoos in Breeding Centers” No 24,

2015, 218 pages, was prepared; it focuses on the problems of rare birds of prey

conservation, advanced methods of study, protection, biotechnology and breeding,

treatment and reintroduction; information on breeding results and collections dynamics at

zoos and breeding centers of Eastern Europe and Northern Asia is provided, as well as the

information on new publications, conferences and symposiums. It is published in a

paperback edition (print run 100 copies) and available on-line.

Issues of applied primatology. Issue 2. Moscow Zoo, 2015, 187 pages. Issues of

primatology concerning zoo and breeding centers management are described. Published in

paperback edition (print run 300 copies) and available on-line.

Thus, during 2015, 1486 pages of research, scientific-methodological and information

materials were issued by the scientific-methodological sector for zoo staff members and the

specialists of other zoological institutions having collections of animals in the EARAZA region.

The published material consists of unique publications necessary for the zoo management of any

range or scale, as well as for the state and public nature conservation organizations. All these

publications are available on-line on the EARAZA website.

Scientific and methodological work

In 2015 the EARAZA Information Center continued to enlarge its electronic library.

The Information Center’s aim is to collect literature not only on zoology, but also on many

fundamental areas of biology and ecology. The majority of information items are in English,

published after the year of 2000. The main attention was paid to collecting manuals on veterinary

care and husbandry of various species, including systematic groups of zoo animals, as well as to

other issues on zoo activities.

The collection of the library of journals and other periodicals of various years, dedicated to

particular taxons or groups of animals, was continued. All the sources are stored electronically in

the PDF of DjVu formats, and just a few are available as web pages or in MSWord format, and

may be copied onto CD or DVD disks.

Following a long-standing tradition, the staff of the EARAZA Information Center provided

assistance throughout the year to member zoos and other zoological institutions in preparing

documentation on zoo construction projects and reconstruction of existing zoo exhibits, formation

of zoological collections and in arranging and conducting of inter-zoo internships.

Zoos and other interested organizations, as well as private individuals, could receive information,

guidelines and manuals pertaining to the legislation on the husbandry of wild animals in captivity.

In 2015, about 200 requests for consultations from the zoos staff and representatives of other

institutions, as well as private individuals, were handled by the EARAZA Information Center.

Among them, besides the EARAZA member zoos, were many other institutions having zoological

collections and engaged in nature conservation education.

Letters referring to the operation of currently existing zoos and to the design and construction of

new zoos were prepared and sent out to The President of Russian Federation, President of

Azerbaijan, to the Government of Russian Federation, to the Ministry of Culture and Ministry of

Natural Resources and ecology of Russian Federation, as well as to executive and legislative

bodies of the Southern Kazakhstan and Sakhalin Regions and of the following cities: Penza,

Rostov-on-Don, Nizhniy Novgorod and Chita.

The EARAZA Information Center has created and maintains an electronic database on animal

species included in International and European studbooks. As of 01.12.2015, it contained

information on 47 species held by 64 zoos of Russia, CIS and Baltic countries. The new

information on the animal species is regularly sent to all keepers of the international studbooks.

The analysis of methodical information received from the zoos concerning scientific-educational

work has been made, as well as editing the texts for guided tours and lectures at the Moscow zoo

and other zoos.

As usual, staff members of some EARAZA zoos successfully continue keeping studbooks for

several rare animal species: the European Studbook for the Stellers’s Sea Eagle is kept by the

Moscow Zoo, for the Siberian White Crane – by Oka Natural Reserve, and for the East Caucasian

Tur – by the Tallinn Zoo. Staff member of the Tallinn Zoo, Dr. Tit Maran, is also acting as the

EEP Coordinator for the European Mink.

The following EARAZA Working groups were active during the reporting period:

The Veterinary Working Group

In 2015, the following activities were carried out

1. Participation in the long-term Program for Reintroduction of Central Asian Leopard in the

Caucasus Region. Providing consulting on arranging planned veterinary procedures. (M.V.

Alshinetsky)

2. Assistance to the veterinary department of the Rostov zoo, carrying out veterinary

procedures, anesthesia and transfers of animals. (M.V. Alshinetsky).

3. Organizing a conference and master-classes on minimal invasive surgery and endoscope

diagnosis of wild and zoo animals, hosted by the Roev Ruchey Park of Flora and Fauna,

Krasnoyarsk.

4. Participation in organizing quarantine facilities in the Centre of rehabilitation for rare

species of big felids in the Far East. (M.V. Alshinetsky).

5. Carrying out annual clinical examination of cranes at the Breeding station for rare species

of cranes in the Oka Reserve and organizing a seminar on veterinary procedures for cranes,

hosted by the Breeding station. (N.V. Bebikh).

6. Participation in the Program of the Council for Marine Animals on fixing GPS receivers on

Atlantic walruses at the Vaygach island. (M.V. Alshinetsky)

7. Participation in the IFAW Project for rehabilitation of orphaned bear cubs at the Clean

Forest biological station. (A.N. Vysokhih, M.V. Alshinetsky).

Also, during the year of 2015, the Veterinary Department of the Moscow Zoo provided

consultations and continued methodical work with the veterinarians of EARAZA member-zoos.

The Working Group on Terrestrial and Freshwater Invertebrates

In 2015, the Working Group included 20 professionals from Moscow, Chelyabinsk, Cherkassy,

Kiev, Tallinn, Riga and Latgale zoos, children’s ecology center “Bugagashechka”, from

St-Petersburg, Moscow and Tomsk state universities, Odessa Dolphinarium, the State Darwin

Museum and the “Butterflyservice” company from Stockholm (Sweden). During the year,

members of the Group constantly rendered advisory and methodical assistance to the staff of other

zoos and insectariums on all issues of keeping, treatment and exhibiting of invertebrates and

scientific research of the species.

In a number of EARAZA member-zoos new exhibits of invertebrates were opened on the

initiative and with the help of the Group. Thus, at the Kiev zoo (Ukraine) a new exhibit of

freshwater and terrestrial invertebrates was opened on October 1, 2015. The exhibit was made

with the help of the member of the Group, O. Moroz. The new exhibit includes 4 species of

Freshwater crayfish, 1 species of centipede and 10 species of terrestrial snails. The invertebrates

are exhibited in 5 aquariums and 3 terrariums situated in a separate module. In 2015, a new exhibit

of arachnids was opened in the Cherkassy Zoo (Ukraine). It was created under the guidance of A.

Ladnov, Deputy Director of the Cherkassy Zoo and a member of the Group, in the existing

pavilion “Terrarium”. The exhibit included two species of scorpions (Heterometrus spinifer,

Pandinus imperator), 1 species of Amblypygi (whip spiders) – Damon diadema, and 8 species

of bird-eating spiders (Brachypelma boehmei, B.smithi, Chromatopelma cyaneopubesceus,

Psalmopoeus irminia, Grammostola rosea, Nhandu chromatus, Lasiodora difficilis, Pterinochilus

In 2015, a new project created by the staff members of the Entomology department of the Moscow

Zoo (M.V. Berezin, D.V. Osipov and E.Yu. Tkacheva), was implemented. The name of the

project is “Creation of interactive educational exhibit Trip to Arachnolandia” which became the

winner of the Competition for creative museum projects among state institutions of the Culture

Department of the Moscow Government in the nomination “Museum exhibition project”. Several

designing and building companies participated in the implementation of this project. Staff

members of the State Darwin Museum ( O. Tkachev, member of the Group, included) , Museum

of Zoology and Entomology Chair of the State Moscow University named after M.V. Lomonosov,

individual company “M.L.Solovieva”, EARAZA and many departments of the Moscow Zoo, also

took part in implementing this project. As a result, at the Moscow Zoo now there is a unique

exhibit of invertebrates in a single separate building (about 170 square meters in total) - the only

one in Russia and one of the largest in Europe – including more than 60 species of live arachnids

kept in 70 terrariums, aquariums and enclosures. Besides, the exhibits, which occupy 4 halls,

include interactive and multimedia equipment, photo gallery, enlarged models of invertebrates,

etc.

The exhibits’ design is carried out using modern exhibition technologies. As the halls are not very

large, guided tours are organized for groups of visitors (up to 15 people). Since its opening on

September 6, 2015, the exhibit was visited by more than 4000 people from 45 regions of Russia

discussed, as well as the results and plans of arranging various mutual activities in the frames of

the Group work. In particular, the members of the Group took part in festive occasions devoted to

created by the staff members of the Moscow Zoo under EARAZA guidance.

The preparation to the 6th

International EARAZA Workshop “Invertebrates in Zoo and

Insectarium Collections” will be one of the important events in 2016. It will be held at the

Moscow Zoo on October 10-15, 2016. There will be 4 members of the Group in the

Organizational Committee of the Workshop – Moscow Zoo staff members and specialists from

the Chair of Entomology of the Faculty of Biology, Moscow State University named after

M.V. Lomonosov.

The Working Group on Birds of Prey and Owls

The EARAZA Working Group includes: V.A. Ostapenko, Prof., Dr.Sc.(Biol.); A.G. Sorokin,

Cand. Sc.(Biol.), Head of the rare species department of the All-Russia Research Institute of

Ecology; Dr. Sc.(Biol.) I.R. Boeme, Professor of the Moscow State University; Moscow Zoo staff

members: L. Kurilovich, P. Rozhkov, N. Skuratov, and also, several professionals from breeding

stations: V.I. Pilyuga (Odessa), V.I. Gook (Kharkov), N.Yu. Belov, (Belgorod).

The Moscow Zoo members of the Group continued sending out questionnaires (into 90

institutions having collections of birds of prey and owls) in order to collect information on

changes in the collections and on breeding these birds. All the questionnaires we received were

analysed, and the data on the birds in the collections and their breeding were compiled into tables.

Information on the methods of husbandry, breeding and adaptation of birds in captivity, and their

life under anthropogenic conditions, as well as on national specifics of falconry hunting has been

collected and analysed as well.

With the help of diploma-students from Moscow Academy of Veterinary Medicine, the Group

continued collecting information for the analysis of the development of Falconiformes collections

of the zoos and breeding stations of our region. The results of the data analysis (for owls and

vultures) were published in the 24th

Issue of the Yearbook “Birds of Prey and Owls in Zoos and

Breeding stations”. The library continued to collect books on birds of prey and owls, both in paper

editions and electronic versions. Also, work was done on the preparation and editing of the next,

24th

issue of the Yearbook on Birds of Prey and Owls in Zoos and Breeding Stations, which was

ready for publishing in the 3rd

quarter of 2015, and is available on EARAZA website

(http://earaza.ru). Some materials for the next, 25th

issue of the Yearbook, have been already

collected.

Members of the Working Group continue to counsel various zoos’ staff members on the birds of

prey collection management, their husbandry and breeding. Strong connection with the Working

Group on birds of prey of Eurasia is also kept (the Chair – V.M. Galushin, Prof., Dr.Sc.(Biol.).

At breeding stations and in some zoos, working out methods of birds of prey keeping and breeding

is continued, which is especially true about rare and valuable species.

In 2015, the Working Group consisted of the zoo staff members from Moscow, St-Petersburg,

Tula, Surgut and Hluboka-nad-Vltavoi (Czech Republic).

1. On November 16-20, 2015 the International Conference on Education Work in Zoos was

held in St-Petersburg and dedicated to the 150th

anniversary of the Leningrad Zoo. The

conference was attended by 59 professionals from 27 zoos and oceanariums – EARAZA

members: from Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Estonia. Reports were also presented by

representatives of St-Petersburg museums and various institutions engaged in education

projects together with Leningrad zoo. The Conference program included 42 reports, more

than 10 master-classes, round table discussions, training workshops, participation in

interactive programs and training sessions, as well as visiting demonstration feedings at the

Leningrad Zoo. The following subjects were discussed at the Conference: organizing

holidays and days on specific themes, various kinds of cooperation between zoos and

oceanariums and other institutions, new forms of interactive programs and new

technologies in education work, activities of clubs and circles hosted by zoos. The

volunteers of Leningrad zoo also shared their experience in arranging nature conservation

events and holidays at the zoo. Several reports were made by the Moscow zoo members of

EARAZA Working Group on education work in zoos, Ye. Migunova, Cand.Sc.(Biol.) and

T.Voronina. They shared their experience in arranging jubilee festivities and the exhibition

“How to Build a Zoo”, and also told the audience about the “Lesson at the Museum”

project and other new interactive education programs prepared in the Moscow Zoo.

It should be noted that a special section of the Conference was devoted to working with

disabled visitors, and the participants from several zoos shared their experience in

organizing events for this category of visitors. The survey of various interactive stand

exhibits made in zoos of Russia and Europe was made by T.A. Vershinina, staff member

of Moscow Zoo, and Ye.V.Agafonova, the head of the scientific department of Leningrad

zoo. Taking into consideration the interest to correct evaluation of the education work

results, a training workshop on the basics of statistic analysis, led by the specialist from the

Russian Academy of Science Institute of Zoology, D.Aristov, was held in the framework

of the Conference. More details about the Conference are available on the EARAZA

website.

2. Members of the Working Group, staff members of the humanitarian projects sector and the

department of creative programs of the Moscow Zoo, provided consultations for the staff

members of Primorsky oceanarium and the zoos of Yaroslavl, Kaliningrad, Vitebsk,

Voronezh and other zoos of the region.

3. Translation of EAZA guidance materials on education work in zoos was made for the

keepers’ training (A.Kadetova and Ye.Migunova.).

4. Members of the Working Group from Moscow (1 participant) and St-Petersburg (3

participants) attended the EAZA Conference on education in zoos (Lisbon, March 2-9

2015) and made several reports on the subjects of the Conference.

The Working Group on Elephants

There are 13 staff members from 8 zoos in the Working Group. Oleg Grischenko (Kharkov zoo,

Ukraine) is the curator of the Group.

In 2015, the Working Group widened the sphere of its interests: besides the Proboscidea, it is

now dealing with rhinoceros, hippopotamuses and tapirs, and consequently, the number of Group

members increased.

It was decided that the Group will be called “The EARAZA Working Group for elephants,

rhinoceroses and hippopotamuses”. At present, the Group consists of 14 specialists from 10 zoos.

The following information was prepared:

Information on the husbandry of tapirs (on CD)

Recommendations on choosing and preparing territories for building new elephant exhibits

in zoos

The main spheres of the Working Group activities were defined: informational support and

issue of the collection of articles on specialized subjects, organizing training of specialists,

cooperation with TAG and EEP EAZA, working out recommendations for the animals’

husbandry in EARAZA member-zoos.

The Group continues working on arranging expeditions to Uda Walawe National Park in Sri

Lanka and to Corbett and Dadhva National Parks.

Collection of electronic library on the husbandry of elephants and other species in captivity was

continued.

In 2015, many regional zoos, supervised by the Informational Center, participated in the

following EARAZA International Conservation and Research complex Programs:

1. The Steller’s Sea Eagle

The material on the status of the European population of the Steller’s Sea Eagle in captivity for the

period from 01.01.2014 to 31.12.2014 was collected, and the 17th

volume of the European

Studbook for the Steller’s Sea Eagle was compiled and sent out to all the participants of the

Program via e-mail. The number of the population, as of 01.01.2015, is 295 (144.147.4) Steller’s

Sea Eagles in 82 zoos and breeding centers.

At the conference in Vorobji Bird Park, a presentation was made on “The role of zoos in rare

species conservation, using the example of the Program for Steller’s Sea Eagle conservation ex-

situ and in-situ”.

The table showing the status of the European population of the Steller’s Sea Eagle has been

prepared, comprising the data about the birds meant for breeding, the birds used in shows and the

surplus birds. Unfortunately, the table is not complete, as 5 institutions have not sent their data so

far. However, it is already clear that at least 24 Steller’s Sea Eagles are used for the shows and

demonstrations, and it looks like this tendency will grow.

Certainly, the Steller’s Sea Eagle is a very picturesque bird for the show. There are some reported

cases of birds of prey breeding after their participation in a show. However, it is necessary to

monitor the genetic value of such birds and somehow regulate the process of using in various

shows only those birds which are not genetically valuable for the captive population. Another

important result of making up a table is that the number of surplus birds has been found out: now

there are 18 birds (9 of them – in Almaty zoo). It is becoming more and more difficult to find a

place for such birds every year. As a result, zoos and particularly private breeding centers sell

Steller’s Sea Eagles to unknown places, from which it is very difficult, next to impossible, to

receive any response. The way out of this situation is, unfortunately, the only one: it’s necessary to

stop breeding the birds representing those genetic lines where there are surplus offspring. In this

connection, recommendations were given to Almaty Zoo to temporarily stop the breeding of those

pairs which had already given offspring, representing one third part of all the chicks hatched in

captivity. At the same time, considering the great experience of Almaty zoo in breeding the

Steller’s Sea Eagles, it was suggested to transfer one sexually mature pair of birds, that has not yet

bred, from the Leningrad zoo to the Almaty zoo, and the birds of this pair are potential new

founders.

It will be possible to use part of Steller’s Sea Eagles for reintroduction, or at least for working out

the methods of reintroduction.

At the same time, it is necessary to make maximum efforts to breed the potential founders (birds

from nature) in order not to lessen genetic diversions in the captive population. There are quite a

few of such birds: 24.

Work on finding out the reasons for the birds that are not breeding has been started; the reasons

can be as follows: a pair was not formed, there is an annoying factor, the bird is single etc. When

these reasons are found out, some measures for creating the most comfortable conditions for

breeding of these pairs will be taken.

One of such measures is transferring birds from the pairs which have not been formed and creation

of new pairs, from single birds as well. Besides, recommendations for transferring Steller’s Sea

Eagles have been worked out and sent to EARAZA zoos, European zoos and breeding centers, in

order to create young pairs.

The collection of the photos’ database of enclosures for keeping Steller’s Sea Eagles has been

started.

Due to financial support of EARAZA, monitoring of the Steller’s Sea Eagle population in the

Lower Priamurye Region was continued by PhD Vladimir Masterov .

Habitat and population survey, evaluation of the population age structure;

Assessment of the current status of the known nests and nesting sites; identifying

new nesting territories;

Assessment of the population reproduction success and mortality rates in different

age categories of the birds;

Studying the nest-site availability and patterns of nest use;

Studying diets, prey species composition and size structure of the prey base of

piscivorous predators;

Assessment of the anthropogenic and pyrogenic transformation of the habitats;

Assessing effects of the brown near predation on the population of the Steller’s Sea

Eagles;

Identifying feeding areas used by bird aggregations;

Mapping of nesting sites, feeding territories, and places of birds’ sightings, based

on GPS-technique;

Collecting materials for the analysis of the genetic structure of the population.

A detailed paper on the results of the study will be published in the Annual Collection “Birds of

Prey and Owls in Zoos and Breeding Centers” Issue 25, 2015.

2. Mountain Ungulates of Eurasia

The number of the zoos keeping mountain ungulates has not changed significantly. In the majority

of the zoos where mountain ungulates are kept, they breed successfully. Most significant success

was achieved with breeding of the argali (Ovis ammon ammon) in the Novosibirsk zoo, Sichuan

takin and Marco Polo sheep in the Moscow Zoo. As of 01.12.2015, there was only one zoo

keeping argali – that is, the Novosibirsk zoo in the quantity of 3.3 (1.1 born in 2015). As of

31.12.2015, there were 5.8 Marco Polo sheep Ovis ammon polii (2.3 born in 2015) and 3.3

Sichuan takins Budorcas taxicolor tibetana (1.1 born in 2015) in the Moscow Zoo.

An interesting group of Kazakh argali Ovis ammon collium (5.4) is kept in the Almaty zoo. In

2015, musk-oxen Ovis moschatus very successfully bred in the Moscow and Tallinn zoos.

In 2015, staff members of Moscow and Tallinn zoos took part in the work of the EEP/EAZA

Sheep and Goat TAG. At the TAG meeting, many issues related to the cooperation in the frames

of programs for conservation of rare species of mountain ungulates. It was pointed out that

cooperation between EARAZA and EAZA zoos became very difficult due to the problems with

getting import permits for the ungulates imported to EU countries.

Despite the fact that recently mountain ungulates “went out of fashion” in zoo collections, there

are some nice exclusive cases. Thus, in 2015 the zoo in Kosice took a group of Siberian ibex

which was compiled of the animals from Olomouc (0.3) and Tallinn (1.0) zoos.

Any EARAZA member-zoo can participate in the Mountain Ungulates of Eurasia Program. The

size of the zoo and its collection is not of primary importance - no matter if there are only 1-2

species or up to 10 species of the mountain ungulates there. The population of any animal which is

a EARAZA priority in any zoo is part of the whole captive population where each member is very

important. In the frames of the Program, the animals are transferred free of charge.

3. Eurasian Bustard Conservation

The project targets three species of the family Otididae occurring within the territory of Northern

Eurasia:

The Great Bustard (Otis tarda tarda, O.t. dybowskii). Both species are globally

threatened. In early 2015, the population of the Western subspecies of the Great Bustard in

the regional zoos comprised 29 (12.17), with 8 (3.5) birds being kept at the Moscow Zoo’s

Breeding Station. So far there are no birds of the Eastern subspecies kept in the regional

collections. In 2015, clutches of infertile eggs were obtained. At the Karasuk station of

Novosibirsk zoo, six eggs were obtained from the only pair of birds, 3 of these eggs were

fertile, 2 chicks hatched and 1 survived and grew up. It is necessary to fill up the group of

the Great Bustards in the EARAZA zoos with birds of the Western subspecies, so that the

work on their breeding could be more active. One of the possible variants to consider could

be birds from the Crimea, as their population is settled and it could be pre-adapted to

artificial breeding, which is proved by the experience of our colleagues in Spain with the

settled Spanish population of the Great Bustards.

We hope that further work on breeding the Great Bustard at enclosures and cages will help

to get a full captive population of this interesting and valuable species which turned from a

hunting one into a rare and endangered one during the last century.

The Little Bustard (Tetrax tetrax) – the species is globally threatened. Three birds (1.2)

are kept at the Breeding Station of the Moscow Zoo. Unfortunately, so far there have been

no cases of breeding, though the male was observed showing mating behavior several

times. At the beginning of 2015, 2 (2.0) birds were kept at the Karasuk Breeding Station of

the Institute of Taxonomy and Ecology (Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of

Sciences) and Novosibirsk zoo. All in all, there are 8 birds (4.4) in the regional collections,

which is clearly not enough for the work on their breeding. It is necessary to supply the

group with birds from natural populations which, according to estimations of

ornithologists, are growing now.

The Houbara Bustard (Chlamydotis undulata ,macqueenii). The species is globally

threatened. At present, one male is kept at the Karasuk breeding station of Novosibirsk

zoo, and his mating behavior has been observed several times in spring. In Shymkent zoo

one bird of an unknown sex is kept at present. The regional zoos need additional birds for

developing natural captive breeding techniques. Both in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan,

breeding stations for Houbara bustards are functioning under the guidance of the Arab

falcon specialists from UAE. One of the goals of these breeding stations is the release of a

certain number of young grown up birds into their natural habitats in Central Asia.

4. Rare and Endangered Waterfoul (Anseriformes) of Eurasia

The goals of the project are the development and implementation of the conservation strategy and

recovery of rare species of Anseriformes with the help of intensive captive breeding and further

reintroduction into the wild; establishing the required number of stable and genetically viable

breeding populations of rare Anseriformes in zoos and breeding stations. The following species

have the highest priority for the program:

Swan goose – Anser cygnoides. This species breeds successfully in the Moscow Zoo and

other zoos of the region. A stable breeding group of Swan geese has been created. The

reintroduction project is now hampered only by the lack of the interested nature conservation

organizations that could carry out wildlife education activities among local people and hunters

in the areas of potential reintroduction, prevent mortality of the released birds and implement

monitoring of the wild population.

Lesser white-fronted goose – Anser erythropus. In order to create the Scandinavian

population of this species, together with Swedish ornithologists, birds from wild populations

in the north of the European part of Russia have been captured. The birds were given over to

the Swedish side for establishing breeding stock and further reintroduction of the young birds

into the wild. The first positive results have been received. EARAZA zoos are also involved

in the work aimed at the breeding of the Lesser White-fronted Geese.

The Bewick’s swan - Cygnus columbianus. The Bewick’s swans have not been breeding at

the Moscow Zoo recently. At Tallinn zoo, the swans of the Western subspecies breed from

time to time. In other EARAZA zoos this species is not breeding. It is necessary to create

suitable husbandry conditions for keeping and breeding of the Bewick’s swans in these and

other regional zoos.

The Program also focuses on other rare Anseriformes species (the Red-breasted Goose, the

Brant Goose, the Aleutian Canada Goose, the Emperor Goose, the Bar-headed Goose, the

Baikal Teal, the Marble Teal, the Common White-eye, the Mandarin Duck and the White-

headed Duck). Some of these species breed successfully at the zoos and breeding stations of

Western Europe. Other species regularly breed at the EARAZA zoos, but yet attention should

be paid to all of the listed species and studies of husbandry and reintroduction methods should

go on. Thus, Moscow Zoo’s Breeding Station continues breeding the Barnacle geese (Branta

bernicla) from the birds raised in artificial environment from eggs collected on the Kanin

peninsula (Archangel Region) in 2004 and 2005. In 2015, in the Breeding Station of the

Moscow Zoo and at the main territory of the zoo, offspring of the Canada geese (Branta

Canadensis leucopareia) was obtained. The founder stock of these birds was received from

N.N. Gerasimov from the Breeding Station of the species, located in the Elyzovo town in

Kamchatka region in 2011. Unfortunately, this Breeding Station ceased to exist due to

financial and other objective reasons. However, its 20-year long work resulted in the

restoration of the wild Canada geese population which had disappeared from North Kuril

islands 70 years ago. Now, according to the data of our Japanese colleagues’ survey,

conducted in the wintering grounds of the birds, there are more than 1500 of them. The

Canada geese also started breeding at the Kuril islands, and some of the birds without rings

have been observed there. The Aleutian Canada geese obtained by the Moscow Zoo have

been divided between the Breeding Station and the main territory of the zoo. They are

breeding successfully and now their numbers are: 9/7/24= 40 specimens. Besides Moscow

Zoo, these birds are in the collection of Novosibirsk zoo – 2/2=4 specimens, and in Yakutia

zoo “Orto-Doidu” 2/3/1=6 specimens.

Novosibirsk Zoo and Karasuk Breeding station of the Institute of Taxonomy and Ecology of

the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences continued activities aimed at

establishing breeding population of the White-headed duck (Oxyura leucocephala)

representing one of the rare ducks of Eurasia. Hybridization with introduced Ruddy duck (O.

jamaicensis) which is observed in the European part of the White-headed duck range, may

result in further loss of the gene pool of the species. Therefore, establishing artificial

population of the White-headed duck has a high conservation importance. The species is

included into the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, in the Red Book of Russia and the

Appendix II of CITES.

At the Karasuk station of Novosibirsk zoo and of the Institute of Taxonomy and Ecology of

the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 7 of 9 females have laid eggs, 2

young (2 years’ old) females did not lay eggs, and four adult females laid eggs for the second

time. Offspring was obtained only from three females, the rest of them laid infertile or

defective eggs. The eggs were incubated by the females. In order to receive a renovated stock

of the White-headed duck with a more quiet character, the majority of chicks were raised in

brooders. Taking into consideration the experience of the past years when the chicks could

not break the shell and died within it before hatching, this year the eggs were taken from the

female and placed into the incubator. After the water test, the eggs’ shell was slightly nagged

around the surface by a manicure nail file, to make it easier for the chick to hatch. As a rule,

the chicks broke the shell themselves and safely hatched inside the incubator. If a chick could

not break the shell for a long time, after the water test, a small hole was made in it for the air

supply. For growing chicks under the female, they were fed with live daphnia. In 2015, a

patent for invention was obtained for: “The method of breeding of the White-headed duck

Oxyura leucocephala (№ 2550039)”.

5. Eurasian Crane Conservation

Exchanging cranes between zoos and breeding centers continued. For renovation and creation of

new pairs, Japanese cranes have been sent from the Kiev, Leningrad, Moscow and Novosibirsk

zoos and from Dodo Live Nature Park and Breeding center of Oka Reserve to the Abakan,

Nikolaev, Yaroslavl zoos and to Gelendzhik safari park and Oka Reserve Breeding Center. White-

naped cranes have been sent from the Novosibirsk zoo to the Abakan zoo and Roev Ruchey Park

of Flora and Fauna in Krasnoyarsk.

Breeding. In 2015, three rare crane species: the Siberian crane, the Japanese crane and the

White-naped crane, bred in 23 centers. The Siberian cranes bred in the Moscow, Tallinn and

Yaroslavl zoos, in Roev Ruchey Park of Flora and Fauna and in the Oka Reserve Breeding

Station. From 13 females, 21 fertile eggs have been obtained, and 12 chicks have grown out of

them (mainly, at the Oka Reserve Breeding Station – 10 chicks). Twenty-three breeding females

of the Japanese crane have laid 25 fertile eggs, of which 16 have grown up. Fourteen females of

the White-naped crane have laid 14 eggs, of which 9 chicks have grown (mainly at the Station

for reintroduction of rare species of birds at Khingan Reserve – 7 chicks).

Releases into the wild

The Japanese crane. Five eggs of the Japanese crane from the Breeding Station of Oka

Reserve, Izhevsk and Novosibirsk zoos and from the Brno Zoo were transported to the

Rare Bird Reintroduction Station of the Khingan Reserve for growing and release into the

wild. One of the eggs turned out to be infertile, one embryo died at the pro-biting stage, but

three chicks hatched and were raised. After the first winter period spent at the Station, the

cranes will be released into the wild at their nesting places.

Six Japanese cranes raised at the Station in 2014, after the first winter were released into

the wild on the territory of Amur region in April this year.

The Siberian crane. In October, ten young Siberian cranes raised at the Breeding Station

of Oka Reserve, were released into the wild in Astrakhan Reserve, in the gathering

grounds of waterfowl and wetland birds in the Volga delta, where migrating birds of the

Western Siberian population were seen regularly. The birds were marked with metal and

plastic rings, they got used to the new conditions very soon. The staff members of the

Astrakhan Reserve continued to monitor the cranes till they flew away in autumn.

Research

Work on creation of genetic database of the cranes kept in zoos and sexing of them was

continued in cooperation with the N.I. Vavilov Institute of General Genetics of the Russian

Academy of Sciences. Genetic analysis of blood and tissue samples of 103 cranes of 9

species on 10 microsatellite loci was done. For 11 specimens of Siberian cranes the

parenthood was confirmed at multiple artificial insemination. For 70 birds of 6 species

sexing was done; for 38 specimens the sexing was done using DNA received from the

blood vessels of the egg allantois after the chicks hatched.

6. Establishing Reserve Populations of the Siberian Spruce Grouse Falcipennis falcipennis

The coordinators and the main executors of the Program are Cand.Sc. (Biol)V.A. Shilo and S.V.

Klimova (Novosibirsk). Contemporary range of the Siberian Spruce Grouse is presented by three

isolated areas located on the vast territory, from Yakutia on its western part to Sakhalin in the east

and Primorye in the south. However, human activity in these areas leads to the fragmentation of

the habitat. The population numbers are very low and the population reduces dramatically.

Formation of the new West-Siberian population of the Siberian Spruce Grouse. In 2015, the

Karasuk Breeding Station of the Novosibirsk Zoo and the Institute of Animal Taxonomy and

Ecology of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences continued working on

breeding the population of the Siberian Spruce Grouse (Falcipennis falcipennis) in enclosure

complex. For the husbandry of adult stock, previously developed and proven methods were used.

As usual, most of the chicks hatched from naturally incubated eggs. In 2015, the birds were

released into the wild twice: in spring, before the mating season, and in summer – females with

chicks. All in all, 20 adult birds and 10 chicks have been released.

Staff of ecological inspection and hunting control organizations continues monitoring the birds

which had been previously released into the wild. Data on encountering Siberian Spruce Grousers

which had been reintroduced before, is carefully analysed.

7. Research, Conservation and Breeding Program for the Pallas’s Cat

Program Coordinator: Irina.A. Alekseicheva, Zoologist, Moscow Zoo.

The following activities were carried out during the period under review:

Works at the Zoo

Works on improving husbandry techniques for the management of Pallas’s cats were

carried out, including development of artificial feeding methods for the cases when the animals

refuse to eat on their own.

Further development of the methods of prophylaxis and treatment of the diseases in

Pallas’s cats has been continued. One of the problems associated with captive management of

Pallas’s cats is an extreme susceptibility of these animals to toxoplasmosis, which can be caused

by reduced activity of certain components of the immune system. For studying this problem, the

first stage of the analysis of antibody responses in Pallas’s cats was implemented in cooperation

with the A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution. The antibody responses of the

experimental animals to nonreplicating antigen were assessed after the cats had been injected with

sheep erythrocytes. The study was aimed at the assessment of some parameters of the immune

system activity in Pallas’s cats and comparison of such parameters with that of two felid species of

similar sizes, the domestic cat (Felis silvestris var. catus) and the leopard cat (Prionailurus

bengalensis euptilura). The results of the study were reported at the International Conference

“Theriofauna of Russia and adjacent territories” (X Congress of Russian Theriological Society

RAS, Moscow, February 1–5, 2016).

Educational activities

Events that have become traditional for the Moscow Zoo were organized at the zoo with

the aim to help visitors learn new knowledge about the rare representative of Russian Fauna,

Pallas’s cat, and about the importance of its conservation; these events were held at the Zoo on the

National Cat Day (March 20) and on the Pallas’s Cat Day (May 22). The events included various

forms of educational entertainment where each visitor caring for the wildlife could select an

interesting and engaging kind of activity. A lecture titled “Meet the Pallas’s cat or big problems

facing the small cat” was held in the open teaching space of the Moscow Zoo.

These events organized by the Research, Conservation and Breeding Program for the

Pallas’s Cat were implemented by the staff members of the Moscow Zoo’s Department of

Mammals.

8. Conservation of Amur tigers and Far Eastern leopards

1) EARAZA Program for Amur tigers (Panthera tigris altaica)

Starting September 1, 2014, Alla Glukhova, Candidate of Biological Sciences, Senior

Zoologist of the Moscow Zoo ([email protected], mobile; +7-929-5511758), has been the

Coordinator of the EARAZA Program for Amur tigers (which is integrated in the EEP for Amur

tigers) and Co-convenor of the Global Species Management Plan (GSMP) for Amur tigers (with

Dr. Tara Harris, Minnesota Zoo, USA). Zoological Advisor of the Program is Irina Alekseicheva,

Senior Zoologist of the Moscow Zoo ([email protected], [email protected]).

Election of the new members of the Committee of the EARAZA Program for Amur tigers

were held in the autumn of 2015.

In general, in the period under review, the participants of the EARAZA Program for Amur

tigers successfully followed transfer recommendations of the Program Coordinator, though some

of the recommendations have not been implemented for reasons not attributable to the

participating zoos. Unfortunately, no breeding recommendations have been implemented because

of either old age of the animals recommended for breeding or transportation delays relating to the

tiger transfers between zoos. Breeding and transfer recommendations for 2015/2016 were

circulated to all participants of the Program in November 2015.

The first male, Ustin, is one of the five tigers that were released back to the wild in the

summer of 2014, after a period of rehabilitation, which was carried out in the Alekseevka

Rehabilitation Centre in Prymorie by the staff of the Special Inspection Tiger, A.N. Severtsov

Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IEE RAN), WCS-Russia,

Phoenix Fund, and IFAW. In December of 2014, Ustin was recaptured in the area of Khabarovsk

where he was taking dogs and livestock, and returned to Alekseevka Rehabilitation Centre. As the

male did not show fear of humans and demonstrated aggressive behaviour, the Ministry of Natural

Resources and Environment of Russia had made a decision on the transfer of Ustin to the

EARAZA Program for Amur tigers. Ustin is now kept at the Rostov-on-Don Zoo. The current age

of the animal is about 3.5 years.

The second male, Tikhon, was removed from the wild in December of 2014; the tiger that

was hunting dogs and did not show any fear of humans was captured in Khabarosky krai. The

abnormal behaviour of the wild tiger prompted the decision to transfer Tikhon to the EARAZA

Program. Currently, Tikhon aged 3.5 year is housed in the enclosures of the Moscow Zoo’s

Breeding Station.

2) EEP for Amur (Far Eastern) leopards (Panthera pardus orientalis). Report of the Coordinators of EEP for Amur leopards was published and circulated to the

EEP participants in early 2016. Brief overview of the Report is presented below.

The EEP (and also Global Species Management Plan – GSMP) for Amur leopards is

currently coordinated by Jo Cook (ZLS) and T. Arzhanova (EARAZA). The Coordinators

sincerely thank Sarah Christie who stepped down from her role as EEP co-coordinator in 2013.

Sarah managed this programme for many years to the highest level, ensuring that when the time

comes, there are suitable leopards available for a reintroduction. She also demonstrated how Amur

leopards held in zoos can generate funds for the few remaining wild animals, as well as providing

valuable data and training opportunities for field scientists.

Our advisors remain the same. Our conservation/ field advisor is Alyona Salmanova who is

the Deputy Director of Science of Kedrovaya Pad and Land of the Leopard National Park.

Our veterinary advisor is John Lewis [email protected]. All the participants are

requested to send full post mortem reports for all deaths to Dr. John Lewis either via email or

by post to the following address: International Zoo Veterinary Group, Keighley Business Centre,

South Street, Keighley, West Yorkshire, BD2 1AG, UK. Please remember that necropsies are not

only to determine the cause of death; they can also provide valuable information about all aspects

of an animal’s health so wherever possible, especially in the case of neonates, do conduct a post

mortem.

As of 31st December 2015, the population stood at 60.56.0 (116) in 39 institutions. Ideally,

we would like to increase the population so that we can export more leopards to the SSP to

improve the genetic health of their population, and so we have enough leopards for the upcoming

reintroduction. Currently, there are 76 leopards with representation of the Founder 2 genes <20%.

The current gene diversity of the population is 0.902 and mean inbreeding coefficient stands at

0.062. The population is descended from just 13 founders and there was some hope that a new

founder may come into the population.

In 2015, three non-EAZA zoos from EAZA region have joined EEP for Amur leopards.

These zoos should be aware of the new structure of the EEP fees for non-EAZA members.

Amur leopard reintroduction

As you are all aware, the Amur leopard reintroduction plan received federal approval to go

ahead in summer 2015. The building of facilities at the reintroduction site, Lazovsky Zapovednik

will begin this spring and we are in close contact with the key staff working in situ. In order to

produce enough leopards to maximise the success of the programme, as well as breeding them in

Lazovsky, we will also be breeding leopards at specially constructed ex situ facilities.

We would like to take this opportunity to reiterate that this is the only government

approved plan for reintroducing Amur leopards in Russia. If you are approached regarding

supplying leopards for any other plan, please do let us know.

Research

We still need to ascertain the melanism status of many of our currently living leopards so

please try and provide a blood sample of each individual when you can. Contact EEP coordinators

for collection and delivery protocols, if you no longer have that information.

We have received a request from the Deputy Director of Land of the Leopard National

Park, Alyona Salmanova, for some information on leopard measurements. If any of you could

provide relevant information, it would be much appreciated. Alyona is interested in the following

data: weight, body length, tail length, shoulder height, ear height, length of back foot, and width of

metacarpal crumb of front and rear paws.

9. Conservation of Rare Sturgeon Species of the Palearctic

The report below presents the implementing staff’s activity over the year 2015. The report

includes two parts relating to the Sakhalin Sturgeon and Amu Darya Shovelnose Sturgeons,

respectively.

1. The Sakhalin Sturgeon

Expedition to the Tumnin River, 2015. Soon after our arrival to the Tumnin River, a relatively

small (slightly heavier than 20 kg) female Sakhalin Sturgeon was caught. Despite active fishing, it

was the only specimen of this species captured during the entire period of spawning run. In

contrast to the years 2007 and 2008, the works on the reproduction of the Sakhalin Sturgeon and

egg incubation in 2015 were conducted at the Anhui sturgeon hatchery of the FSFI

“Amurrybvod”, located in the Nanai region in Khabarovsk krai (in the area where the Anhui River

empties into the Amur River, about 180 km from Khabarovsk) (http://amrv.ru/index.php…) rather

than in the fieldwork conditions as was planned earlier. The caught wild female was brought to the

hatchery with a special fish carrying truck for the works on establishing breeding stock. Males

have grown at the hatchery from the larvae that we obtained in 2007–2008 in the course of

artificial incubation of the eggs produced by wild fishes in the field conditions in the Tumnin

River. The milt was obtained from the males for the first time. Mr. Konstantin Kovalev, the Head

of the Cryoconservation Laboratory of the All-Russian Research Institute of Freshwater Fish

Farming, arrived from Moscow to collect some amount of the milt for future experiments on

cryoconservation. The experiments turned out to be successful, and the milt of the Sakhalin

Sturgeon, frozen in liquid nitrogen, is now stored in the cryoconservation laboratory of the

Institute. Some of the sperm was thawed and used for fertilization of starlet eggs; as a result,

experimental hybrids were produced. Egg incubation at the Anhui hatchery did not go smoothly.

June weather is much warmer in Priamurye than in the Tumnin valley located on the other side of

Sikhote-Alin Mountain range. Consequently, the temperature of the water pumped in the water

system of the Anhui hatchery and meant for the incubation of the eggs of the sturgeons from the

Amur River (the Amur (or Japanese) Sturgeon and the Kaluga) is higher than that in the Tumnin

River (especially when the incubation of sturgeons of the Amur River had been completed by

mid-June). Thus, we observed several temperature jumps per day, sometimes quite sharp ones

(13.4оС to 19.3

оС in 1.5 hours or 15.1

оС to 8.3

оС in 7 hours), during the whole incubation period.

Unfortunately, despite successful fertilization of the eggs, which was close to 100%, and an

excellent progress of the incubation during the first three days, many eggs were lost in the process

of subsequent “unsteady” incubation. Nevertheless, the Sakhalin Sturgeon demonstrated high

ecological plasticity, and over 25 thousand larvae had been produced by the time of our departure.

Additional two and more thousands of larvae hatched after our departure. However, after the

transition to active feeding, a little more than 2,000 larvae survived.

On September 9, 2015, 1,000 specimens of juvenile sturgeons, each weighing about 3 g,

were released into the Tumnin River by the staff of the Anhui hatchery, with 140 specimens still

being kept at the hatchery as a reserve generation of 2015.

Expansion of the geographical scope of the reserve populations of the Sakhalin

Sturgeon in 2015. In 2015, the number of reserve groups of the Sakhalin Sturgeon was increased.

On September 25, Victor Khrisanfov brought 100 juvenile specimens of the species, each

weighing 4 grams (the young were collected from the stock that survived at the Anhui fish

hatchery) to the Konakovo sturgeon breeding farm of the All-Russian Research Institute of

Freshwater Fish Farming (Tverskaya olast). On November 14, A.G. Romanov, Senior fish-breeder

of the FSFI “Mosrybvod” brought 50 juvenile Sakhalin Sturgeons, each weighing 2.5–10 grams,

from Anhui sturgeon hatchery to the Mozhaisk fish breeding farm (Moscow oblast, Mozhaisky

region, Gorelovo village); as of the middle of February, 2016, 43 individuals weighing on average

50 grams survived.

Analysis of the results, conclusions, and plans. Data analysis was done by a group of

specialists of the All-Russian Research Institute of Freshwater Fish Farming, headed by Victor

Khrisanfov. The analysis has shown that the most probable cause of the massive loss of fertilized

eggs (slightly more than a half of all eggs survived) and larvae (about 5% of all eggs survived,

with most of the eggs being lost at the stage of transition to active feeding) is presented by

multiple thermal shocks at the earliest stages of development of internal organs during incubation

(the failure to maintain water temperature at a stable level in the Anhui sturgeon hatchery). The

management of the FSFI “Amurrybvod” have responded positively to our request to cease the

practice of removal of wild male and female sturgeons from the Tumnin River for their transfer to

the Anhoi sturgeon hatchery and build an incubation and larva raising station for the Sakhalin

Sturgeon at the very area of natural spawning of the species, i.e. on the Tumnin River. The

proposal on the location of the area for building the incubation station – Chypsary settlement

(situated on the Tumnin River, close to the usual place of capturing Sakhalin Sturgeons coming to

their spawning sites) was set up by Konstantin Yapharkin, the Head of the Sovetsk-Gavansk

regional department of monitoring of aquatic biological resources and environment of the FSFI

“Amurrybvod”. Currently, the local authorities along with WWF Russia are looking for sponsors

that would be willing to support the construction of the incubation station in Chypsary.

2. Amu-Darya Shovelnose Sturgeons

Expedition of 2015. From November 8, 2015 through January 21, 2016, planned expedition to the

Khorezm oblast of Uzbekistan, organized by Aleksey V. Chernyak, the Coordinator of the

EARAZA Program for Conservation of Rare Sturgeon Species of the Palearctic for rendering

assistance to the Khorezm Mamun Academy in Khiva, was carried out with the purpose of

increasing existing reserve population of the Large Amu-Darya Shovelnose Sturgeon

(Pseudoscaphirhynchus kaufmanni) and establishing a reserve population of the Small Amu-

Darya Shovelnose Sturgeon (Pseudoscaphirhynchus hermanni), which became possible due to

obtaining a license for the removal of a number of individuals of both species from the wild.

Activities of November and almost all of December of 2015 yielded modest results, but in the late

December, we managed to achieve a success. We have caught nine large (500–1,000 grams)

individuals of the “broad snout” form of the Large Amu-Darya Shovelnose Sturgeon, one large

(over 100 g) specimen of the “narrow snout” form of the Large Amu-Darya Shovelnose Sturgeon,

and one adult individual of the Small Amu-Darya Shovelnose Sturgeon. All sturgeons were

released in the pools with cold water (+9оС to +10

оС) in the building of the Khorezm Mamun

Academy. For this purpose, the Khorezm Mamun Academy has acquired additional four plastic

fish pools, and we have provided the Academy with the equipment for life support system. For

learning Amu-Darya Shovelnose Sturgeon husbandry methods, employees of Tashkent Zoo, who

rendered practical assistance with mounting of the equipment for new pools, visited the Mamun

Academy. The Academy has accepted the obligation to transfer several Large Amu-Darya

Shovelnose Sturgeons to the Tashkent Zoo in 2017.

Analysis of the results, conclusions, and plans. After the end of the fish wintering period

in late March–early April of 2016, we will try to find an opportunity of visiting Khiva. We are

supposed to determine sexes and level of maturity of the collected fishes and either obtain eggs

and arrange their fertilization or (if there are no female specimens fit for spawning in 2016) carry

out cryoconservation of milt so that it could be used in the future.

We regard the results of our expedition to Uzbekistan as a great success, but we do realize

that it is only the first step to succeeding in the conservation of Amu-Darya Sturgeons. We need to

continue effort to capture more shovelnose sturgeons for expanding the current reserve population

and at the same time, to increase the number of sturgeon pools, improve technology for operating

the pools (improve water purification and aeration systems, install ultraviolet water treatment and

temperature control systems), perform diagnostic ultrasonic testing of the captured fishes for

defining sexes of individuals and levels of their readiness for spawning, prepare appropriate

spawning conditions, create a small plant for spawning and a plant for raising larvae and fry, and

carry out cryoconservation of milt of the Amu Darya Shovelnose Sturgeons.

We have made a request of WWF Russia for acquisition of expensive equipment and

organization of special survey aimed at the search of the Amu-Darya Sturgeons’ spawning

grounds in the Amu-Darya River segment located in the inner part of the territory of Khorezm

oblast and Karakalpakstan. The survey is necessary for monitoring the status of spawning

grounds, identification of the areas of future releases of young captive fishes for supplementation

of the wild population, and protection of spawning grounds against poachers (Amu-Darya

sturgeons are hunted down by local people who believe that parts of these fishes’ bodies have

certain healing powers). All listed measures present a minimal goal. Introduction of Amu-Darya

Shovelnose Sturgeons into aquaculture in Uzbekistan – and later, in other countries – will be a

better guarantee of the conservation of this rare species.

10. Sexing birds by DNA using PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction)

During 2015, O. Nesterenko, Moscow Zoo researcher, used PCR method for sexing 71 birds

(birds of prey, cranes and other species) from collections of 12 zoos and breeding stations:

11. Long-term project for the conservation of the Przewalski’s Horse

The Moscow Zoo and other EARAZA zoos participate in building a Breeding Station for the

Przewalski’s Horse under the Long-Term Project for the Reintroduction of the Przewalski’s Horse

in the Orenburg Region. This project constitutes a part of the Conservation Strategy for the

Przewalski’s Horse in Russia. The participants of this project are: the Ministry of Natural

Resources of Russia, A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the Russian Academy

of Sciences, the Steppe Institute of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences,

EARAZA, Moscow Zoo and other institutions.

The restoration of the Przewalski’s Horse wild population in the remaining areas of the Orenburg

Steppe not only guarantees the survival of the species, but will also contribute to the conservation

of biodiversity in steppe ecosystems and to their stability and rehabilitation.

In 2013-2014, the Breeding Center for the steppe animals was opened near Sazan village of the

Beliaevsky district, Orenburg region. It is the first section of the enclosures for the steppe animals

on a specially protected area. In May and November of 2014, 3 specimens of Przewalski’s horses

were delivered to the Center from the Moscow Zoo and Khotynets natural park (Orlovskaya

region). Besides, a pair of kiangs from the Moscow Zoo and a pair of camels with an offspring

from Kazakhstan were also delivered to the Breeding Center. All the animals survived very

successfully through the winter in 2014/2015.

In spring of 2015, the Working Group for Przewalski’s Horse reintroduction was created in the

Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia (approved by the Deputy Minister of natural resources

and ecology P.Gizatullin on 15.05.2015). The Working Group includes representatives of all the

institutions participating in the Project: A. Chibilev (the Steppe Institute of the Ural Branch of the

Russian Academy of Sciences), V. Rozhnov (A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution),

N. Spasskaya (the Zoological Museum of the Moscow State Lomonosov University), V.

Ostapenko (EARAZA, Moscow Zoo) and Ye. Kuznetsov, the Head of the UNDP/GEF/EU

project, staff members of State Nature Reserves of Orenburg Region R. Bakirova and

T. Zharkikh, and O. Pereladova, WWF representative in Russia. The Head of the Working Group

is V.Stepanitsky, Deputy Director of the Department of the Ministry of Natural Resources of

Russia. The Plan for implementation of the Program for Przewalski’s Horse reintroduction in

Orenburg region was worked out by the members of the Working Group. The Plan contains

updated information on the reintroduction area, the list of works and stages of the Program

implementation approved at the Working Group meeting on June 1, 2015.

According to the RF Government Resolution of 13.07.2015 # 700, on “The expansion of the

territory of the state natural reserve " Orenburgsky ", another site (the fifth in number) under the

name of “Preduralsky steppe”, previously called “Orlovsky steppe”, has been included into the

territory of the reserve. According to the decision of the RF Ministry of natural resources and

ecology, state natural reserve “Orenburgsky” is responsible for the work on reintroduction of the

Przewalski’s Horse (Federal State Budget Institution “Orenburgye Reserves”, the director of the

reserve R.Bakirova). During the summer of 2015, 2 acclimatization enclosures (345 hectares each)

have been built on the territory of “Preduralsky steppe”, as well as quarantine facilities and the

cordon building, autonomous electric supply (sun batteries) and water supply (well). In October

2015, the first 6 specimen of the Przewalski’s Horse arrived from Taha Association (France). All

organizational work was done by T. Zharkikh, Head of the Reintroduction Center for the

Przewalski’s Horse of the Federal State Budget Institution “Orenburgye Reserves”. The financial

support for the Reintroduction Center for the Przewalski’s Horse and for transfer of animals was

given by the UNDP/GEF Project «Improving the coverage and management efficiency of protected

areas in the steppe biome of Russia» (V. Stepanitsky is the National Director of the project, and

Ye. Kuznetsov is the Project Manager).

At the end of November 2015, after quarantine period was over, the animals were transferred to

the acclimatization enclosure. At present, the organizational work at the Reintroduction Center is

continued.
