Master Jose Isidro and Punong Guro Steven Dowd donated their time for a most worthy cause which was to be able to assist the Precious Heritage Children’s Home with a charitable donation. The charity event was held at the Rajah Sulayman Park - 432 San Andres St. and Roxas Blvd, Manila, Philippines Not wanting to put a price on the seminar Master Isidro and Punong Guro Dowd decided that any practi-tioners or non-practitioners that would like to participate in the seminar had to donate either money, non-perish-able food or toys. All donations were given to Joel B. Santos - Founding Director of the Precious Heritage Ministries.

Master Jose Isidro believes in training hard, loyalty, honest, integrity, discipline, compassion, respecting, and teaching always in the practical-ity and foundation of the Filipino martial arts style of Modern Arnis. He emphasize always in strong basics and foundation, which is the key in good form and techniques in any level such as beginner, ad-vance, lakan, and self-defense. He always believes in the education and history of the Filipino martial arts of Modern Arnis. Not just learn the techniques, but know the history of who, what, where, and the meaning of Modern Arnis. He also believes in always respecting and crediting the Family of the Founder of Modern Arnis. Professor Remy A. Presas, Rosemary Presas, Dr. Remy P. Presas Jr., and the Presas Lineage of Professor Remy Amador Presas.

Punong Guro at Tagapagmana Steven Dowd commenced his training in Arnis Balite (Aguillon Arnis) in 1974. He was appointed by the Aguil-lon family upon their fathers passing away on January 8, 1991 to repre-sent the family art known as Aguillon Arnis. In 1998 in talking with the son and daughters of Pundador Aguillon it was proposed and accepted that the family art would use the name of Arnis Balite their fathers’ nickname while he was a Champion Boxer before the war with Japan, which was Kid Balite. Pundador Manuel M. Aguillon was very selective in his teachings and often refused to teach individuals who did not have the attitude, discipline, or the spirit to represent his family’s art. Being the last student of Pundador Aguillon Punong Guro Dowd wishes to carry on his beliefs and the art as he would have done so himself. In Arnis Balite, Pundador Aguillon did not have a belt ranking system, one was either a Student or Teacher.

Filipino Martial Arts Arnis Charity SeminarMaster Jose Isidro of Modern Arnis and Punong Guro Steven Dowd of Arnis Balite

April 11, 2015

Master Jose Isidro of Isidro Modern Arnis was to be in the Philippines taking care of some personal matters and planned to have a charity seminar for the Precious Heritage Children’s Home located at: Road 11, Sta. Rosa St., Purok 2, Mayamot corner Cupang,, Lower Antipolo City, Philippines. Finding that Punong Guro Ste-ven Dowd of Arnis Balite was to also be in the Philippines at the same time, Master Isidro asked if Punong Guro Down would like to join in this worthy cause, Punong Guro Dowd did not hesitate and joined right in. The cost of the seminar to practitioners or anyone wanting to join in and train was any amount of money, non-perishable food, or a toy to be donated to the Precious Heritage Children’s Home. The seminar was from 2:30 to 5:00 pm. At the Rajah Sulayman Park, located at 432 San Andres St. and Roxas Blvd, Manila, Philip-pines.

Plaza Rajah Sulayman, also known as Rajah Sulayman Park, is

a public square in Malate, Manila. It is bounded by Roxas Boulevard to the west, San Andrés Street to the south and Remedios Street to the north. The plaza is considered the center of Malate as it fronts the Malate Church, the main church of the district. The square is named after Rajah Sulayman, the late 16th-century sovereign of the Kingdom of Maynila, who died in the Battle of Bangkusay Channel while resisting invading Spanish troops led by Miguel López de Legazpi.Note: In Spanish colonial times, the plaza was a simple open field located between the shores of Ma-nila Bay and the Malate Church, ending at a beach which used to be a popular bathing area. However, during American rule, the plaza was cut off from the coastline due to land reclamation works undertaken for the construction of Roxas Boulevard. The plaza was last renovated in 2002, during the administration of Lito Atienza, as part of a citywide urban beautifi-cation program aimed at making Malate a prime tourist area, which

involved the installation of a new dancing fountain. A large signaled pedestrian crossing connects the plaza to the Baywalk, which has been criticized for worsening traf-fic along Roxas Boulevard. In part because of the 2002 renovations, Plaza Rajah Sulay-man has been regarded as the new center of Malate nightlife, which traditionally is associated with the Remedios Circle further inland, as well as Manila’s lovers’ lane. The plaza is also regarded as a prime spot to watch the famous sunsets of Manila Bay. However, the elec-tion of Alfredo Lim as mayor of

Manila in 2007 and his subsequent closure of establishments along the - Baywalk of which the plaza was considered a part - have put into question this reputation: columnist Ducky Pare-des has noted that the closure of the Baywalk has done more harm for the city than good.

Charity Seminar Begins

It was of course a warm day being in the Philippines, however with a slight breeze and being in the park it turned out to be an excellent day. Once everyone arrive, there were participants that Guro Francis Wilcel V. Adriano of ‘Kuntaw/Arnis’ brought which were his students from Calamba, Laguna. A couple practitioners from Leyte, Visayas Jay and Julius traveled to be part of this charity event and a few practitioners from Manila. Master Isidro divided the practitioners up in two groups which he took half and Punong Guro Dowd the other and moving to their areas taught:Master Isidro - Isidro Modern Arnis started with basic footwork and body shifting then worked on basic Modern Arnis empty hand boxing Sinawali then converted the same exercise using the baston. Master Isidro then continued with self-defense doing a punching / kicking combination and using a grabbing techniques. He concluded his seminar with each group with some Espada y Daga training.

Punong Guro Dowd – Arnis Balite started with demonstrating how to limit the opponents power and moving from the largo (long-range) position to corto (close-range) positioning the opponent for attack, defense and counter, single baston against single baston and single baston against empty handle. With the second group that Punong Guro Dowd had there were some student of Kuntaw and so Punong Guro Dowd went through some of the basic movements of Kuntaw.Even park patrons watched and as time went on began asking questions and clarification on movements.
