Street Ministry in Rio de Janeiro

Our sisters moved to the neighborhoodof Campo Grande in Rio de Janeiro, andbegan a street ministry in the area. OnFriday nights, together with lay-associatesand vocations, they take a lunch to thepopulation of the local streets, as well assharing the word of God. Simultaneously,in Sao Paulo, religious and lay-personswent out to the streets of the capital wherethey encounter homeless street peoplewho had previously lived in Cracolandia, who are now dispersed in small groups inthe inner-city.

On the 18th of February, our communityrejoiced with the entrance of 13 brothersand 21 sisters in the time of novitiate inthe Fraternity of Missionaries, “Poor ofJesus Christ”, in the city of Corbelia,Parana. The novitiate is the time ofofficially entering religious life. It is a timeof retreat, to encounter God, to grow inintimacy with the Beloved, and beingformed in our charism. Soon afterwards, the ceremony in which our founderwelcomed them, the Holy Mass wascelebrated in thanksgiving for the lives ofthese brothers and sisters.

“For freedom Christ set us free; sostand firm and do not submit again tothe yoke of slavery”. (Galatians 5,1)In a Holy Mass celebrated at the missionhouse, “The Good Pastor”, in the Stateof Para, that serves as a house ofrecuperation from alcohol and drugs, fiveof our “favored sons” received their firstsacraments. The Holy Mass waspresided by Fr. Francisco Saded, who,by the order of Archbishop AlbertoTaveira, ministered the Sacraments ofbaptism, chrisma and first communion. The first Sunday of every month is a dayof visiting of the families, and together withthem we united around the altar for thisspecial moment. Afterwards our “favoredsons” performed a play where theydemonstrated the reality of how sinenslaves and destroys, and how Christ, with His Grace, frees and saves throughthe sacraments of the Church.

“I am the vine, you are the branches.Whoever remains in me and I in himwill bear much fruit, because withoutme you can do nothing.” (John 15,5)Twenty lay-associates in the city ofGovernador Valadares received their“belonging” to the Fraternity ofMissionaries on the 3rd of February, through the hands of our founder, Fr.Gilson. The Holy Mass was in the Chapelof Centrel, where Fr. Gilson talked of theimportance of the ties not only with theFraternity of Missionaries, but with Christhimself, as a sign that the lay-person shouldbe a light in the world of today. Holypeople who live in the world, but are notof the world. People who, in spite of thedifficult times of today, seek to serve theLord in their different states of life.
