HOW OFTEN DO YOU SHUT DOWN YOUR COMPUTER?To Shut Down or not to Shut Down, that is the question.

Do you shut down your computerregularly? Do you ever shut downyour computer? Is there benefit inshutting down your computer? Thereis no easy answer. If you look atcomputer manuals, online forumseven company web pages, you willsee that there are answers on bothsides of the fence. Some say shutdown at the end of every day, otherssay they never do. Which do webelieve?

If I had to guess, the truth liessomewhere in the middle. There aresome things we do know:1. You dont need to shut down everyday.2.The greatest amount of power useoccurs during start up and shut down.3. Power is still being used even whena computer is sleeping.

4.Damage is more likely to occurduring start up or shut down.5.RAM is not cleared when acomputer is sleeping

Any way youlook at itthere arebenefits toboth andbenefits tonone, butthe WA

    InformationServicesdepartmentrecommends a happy medium.

Shutting down your computer on theaverage of one time a weekcompletely wipes away the computer'sRAM (random access memory), whichmight have some corrupt/junk data left

in it from various things the computerdoes. It also lets the computer'scomponents cool down.

Of course, if you notice your compute

acting out of the ordinary, slower thannormal, or applications are actingstrange, a good first action to try is agood old-fashioned restart.

    my.worcesteracademy.org; Worcester Academys Private Cloud

The introduction of My.Worcesteracademy.org to the WA technology

environment has made interacting with the core suite of tools even easier.

Through Single Sign On technology (SSO) students will be able to

remain signed into the core tools used by Worcester Academy.

Once into the private cloud that is My Worcester Academy,

clicking on an icon will open up that particular application.

This is just phase one of using the cloud. There are many

other functions like file save and share, collaborative spaces

and news. While this evolving tool begins to take root on WA

laptops, there was another motivation behind setting up a

    private WA cloud.

The ability to access, use, retrieve and share files, applications, news

and other features from any computer around the globe has long been

possible in the corporate world and in some colleges, but now you

can do these things with your WA computer and files as well.

By having a private cloud, students, teachers and parents

can access WA at any time, from any computer. Times

when there might have been interruption to the school day

(such as too many snow days) are becoming a thing of the

past with the cloud giving us ubiquitous access.

Stay tuned to the InfoScape newsletter for updates to how we

    are using My.WorcesterAcademy.org

    Why a private cloud?

    Using a single name and

    password, all Worcester

    Academy community

    members (Students,

    Teachers & Parents)

    will be able to log

into the core suite oftools for that

    particular group.

Mr. Tim Healy, WAs Director of

    Residential Life and its TOP

    TWEETER, shares some

    advice for tweeting about WA.

So here are some Twitter Tips

    (Twips if you will):

    1. Keep to 120 to enable someone to

add a quote to a RT if necessary.Italso give you space to add a photo

    without worries.

    2. Use the hashtag #worcacdmy to

embed any tweets onto the Twitter

feed on or web page.3. Dropping in a hashtag during the

course of a sentence might seem

funny but it will help generatefollowers. Here is an example of

    what I am talking about:

Had a great evening in #Shanghai

meeting up with members of the

class of 1992. They are truly#honorable alumni.- What happens by doing that is

    anyone that searches Shangai or

honorable will see your tweet. It is away of increasing our reach on

    Twitter.

    4. Feel free to use someone's

    twitter handle in a sentence

itself. That way it automaticallyshows up in their feed and

    doesn't waste characters. Forexample:

    It was great seeing Coach

    Johnson get his first Football

    win with @worcesteracdmy.

    5. Some people resort to

    "Twitter Speak" and overly

chopping up words to make the

fit the 140. I don't because werepresent education and it

    detracts from educational

professionalism in my opinion. Ijust try to rephrase it to make it

fit to 140. I take it as a verbalchallenge to make it work!

    6. Tweet as if you speaking to an

audience, not writing to one. Thetough part is that it is a universal

Worcester Audience.7. Feel free to retweet what appears

in your feed. If they already followWorcester, they won't see it again but

if they don't, it helps those accounts

to get more followers from people

that might follow you but not otherWA accounts.

    8. The best time to tweet is between1:00 and 3:00 PM in the time zone of

the audience you are trying to reach.

11:00 AM - right before lunch break

is the second best time. It is why Ioften wait until then to RT Worcester

items. For other things like gamescores the fans of those teams are

checking as it is happening so in

those cases I don't wait. Tweet

    game highlights as they happen.
