It’s amazing the random, and truth be told, rather dour places that amazing parties can be thrown. Take Peppermint for example. Turning the clock back several years, they used to throw weekly events in the Fairmont’s cavernous ballroom, turning a very ordinary rectangle into a carnival of house, and one that Carl Cox literally shook to the core as his exuberant dancing threatened to bring his DJ booth crashing down.

Fast forward to now, and Peppermint is no longer weekly, but instead they throw several annual parties that are the talk of the town - and the latest, their 8th birthday, features one of their regular guests, Dutch trance titan Paul Van Dyk. And once again they’ll be transforming a rather ordinary space, the World Trade Centre, into a house music theatre, with some of the biggest and best production the Middle East has ever seen. Happy birthday Peppermint, here’s to many more.

You know it’s been a good night when the dancefloor - which has been busy from sunset to 2am thanks to nearly 2,000 guests coming through the doors - refuses to go home a full 10 minutes after the last track has been played. But then again with an 8 DJ line-up across 9 hours, the dancefloor was always going to be in for a good night. And so it proved, with Australian special guest DJ Mo’funk dropping several anthems during his set including a few Jamiroquai numbers that got the crowd doing their best Napoleon Dynamite moves. An excellent night all round, then.

THIS IS HOW A beach party is done. All the elements - beautiful beach, great crowd and a fantastic line up - aligned to serve up what Sandance initially promised to be: a raucously good beach party. Travis showcased their rock roots early on, later switching to their signature sincere brand of folk music, wrapping up with a busker’s version of ‘Flowers in the Window’ and their stand out hit, ‘Why Does it Always Rain on Me’. Tinchy Stryder was a late and rather average replacement for Dizzee Rascal, Japanese Popstars put in a solid live electro performances, but it was Zane Lowe that really stepped it up. He created a frantic energy among the crowd, his mash up of 90s staples, dubstep and general electric mayhem whipping the crowd into a frenzy. Headline act Fatboy Slim opened an unforgettable set with ‘Praise You’, and thrilled the crowd with a stunning visual and laser show. Building his set with samples of his own hits and various pop culture references, he finished with an impressive ‘Gangsters Tripping’/Rolling Stones mash up. Possibly the best Sandance so far, we are already looking forward to its October return. Miriam Sweeney.

There's always one final flourish before the summer closes down the outdoor concert season, and this year's big hitter is a double header of tinie tempah and 'Black And Yellow' star Wiz Khalifa. Alongside that, the promoters have — rather oddly — roped in electro house favourite David Vendetta on deck duties. The whole thing takes place at the Media City Amphitheatre on Friday May 25 from 7pm, tickets from Dhs295.

Rock and metal fans have had it good recently with Metallica and Avenged Sevenfold the big name visitors recently. And while they might be more pop than metal, US rockers Evanes-cence have been confirmed to play in Dubai at the end of June. The 'Bring Me to Life' Grammy-award winners will be playing live at the Trade Centre on Friday June 22, with tickets Dhs295.

Once one of the brightest alternative hip hop lights thanks to his none-cooler Mo'Wax label, James lavelle has since gone onto create the much-loved UNKLE outfit, while more recently, he's become an in-demand tech house DJ hav-ing ditched his once trademark breaks sound. And he'll be bringing that tough, underground sound to chameleon on Friday May 25 thanks to Traffik events.

HOW DO YOU follow up one of the best DnB nights in recent memory when Brazilian DJ Marky put the funk (and samba and DnB and upside down scratching) in Globalfunk? Well, invite down fellow Brazilian DnB producer and highly rated dJ SPy, a close friend of DJ Marky and one of the hottest properties on the deebee scene at the moment. He'll be joined by regular MC and Fabric resident Lowqui, while Globalfunk residents Mach 4 and Mr Gremlin will be on support duties on thursday May 31 at The Music Room, tickets Dhs100 on the night.

It's hard to over-state the importance of the SAE to the local music community, with many of the up-coming bands and DJs schooled in some fashion from the creative college. And they're holding an Open evening on May 23rd, and an Open day a week later to showcase their courses, while you can also take advantage of one-off discounts and save up to dhs10,000. The Open Evening takes place at the SAE's headquarters on Level 2, Block 16 Knowledge Village from 6-9pm, and will include information on film making, audio engineering, web development, 3D animation and games development.

you play dubai every year — how does it compare to other city’s around the world? Well, I never really compare places in that way. Each tends to be so different from the next that I really wouldn’t know which element to compare to which. It does have the feel of somewhere incredibly clean though and the ‘newness’ is incredible. Everywhere looks like it just opened yesterday!

And is there any style of music that works here more than anything else? Not really, no. I have a pretty clear idea of the sound/s that I like to put across. After that, everything’s driven by the interaction with my audience. So somehow what gets played just works! I really wouldn’t know how to categorise what I play as a whole these days, beyond terming it ‘electronic dance music’ anyway.

What’s the one club or festival you still haven’t played that you need to?The good thing is that I’ve been to a lot of different places over a number of years. In that time electronic dance music has developed from a small sub-culture to the biggest music culture in the world. I’ve been along for most of that, so as a part of it, I think I’ve been DJ’d at most of them. That said, there are new clubs opening and festivals launching every year. If they’re good, they have the right vibe, with plenty of smiling faces in them, it goes without saying I’ll want to play them!

How much do your sets vary from night to night, is there a touring theme, or is it up to how you feel/crowd reaction?I have a clear idea of what I would like to play on any given night. However what ends up coming out of the speakers is always down to the interaction of the audience. So there is always a ‘theme’ to the night, but where the night ends up musically is as much down to the crowd, as it is to me.

A lot of the big dJs are paying more and more attention to the set up — lights, sounds, visuals, creating a show. How have you reacted to that? Well you know the thing is that how I play — since technology allowed it — is with a very music-production type manner. I incorporate keyboards, computers and all sorts of different elements on stage with me that allow me to be really communicate with the audience and be creative while playing. At the same time, along with the whole album tour, goes a very special stage and visual design, which reflects the whole theme of Evolution.

there was a new dJ list released recently, meaning there’s the dJ Mag poll, the Resident Advisor and several others. Which one do you pay attention to and why?Truthfully, none really. I’ve always said I really don’t care. It’s of course a big honour to receive any award or to be voted into any of those lists that you mention. At the same time it hasn’t, and will never change my approach to how I make my music or structure my sets.

And what should the Peppermint 8th birthday expect on the night? 1000% energy – that’s for sure. Get a good night’s sleep

the night before! You’re also going to be hearing is a lot of the music from ‘Evolution’, including some of the forth-coming remixes of the tracks. Stylistically there’s a proper mix of sounds and genres on there, so be prepared for 31 flavours, I guess!

favorite venues in the world with a great crowd who come for the music. That challenged my perception about the House Music scene in Dubai and gave me a bit of hope that some folk do indeed appreciate the music and vibe over Gucci handbags.

Firstly, congratulations on your residency at club Smug. What’s the music policy for the venue? Thank you. We aim to bring people something different at Smug, so our music policy is very basic - sophisticated, urban grooves. If it isn’t sophisticated, urban or featuring some sort of groove, it’s not getting played. However, our policy can and will change depending on the sex and bust size of whoever is asking at the DJ booth.

What’s been your greatest dJ achievement to date?As you can imagine, DJ Habibi 2000 has had a number of career highlights. I suppose being chosen to play at the opening of the first Ajman International Film Festival was one, as was breaking the regional record for biggest indoor firework display when a Club Smug guest spent AED50,000 in 10 minutes. I also devised the first Moet T-Shirt Competition, which has become a

huge success, although I would again like to remind contestants that a) the t-shirt has to be white and b) they have to be female.

What can the younger generation of dJs learn from you? So many things. Be true to yourself, seize the day, don’t give in to your fears, and read lots of Paulo Coelho. That man got me where I am today.

do you see an affinity with yourself and any other dJs out there? Well, like me, Cowboy is a pioneer, a DJ not afraid to push the boundaries or risk alienating himself for the benefit of music. I definitely rate Cowboy among by Top 30 DJs in Jebel Ali and I hope that, in time, people will come to appreciate what he has been doing out there.

you seem to have a high opinion of yourself, maybe not one shared in the dJ community - do you think other dJs feel threatened by you? It’s natural. The club scene is a predatory world and I’m the lion king. Aside from my award-winning DJing (Infusion Magazine’s ‘One To Watch Out For’ 2002

[Infusion Ed — Erm, we weren’t running then]), I think the biggest threat is the DJ Habibi 2000 brand, which now incorporates club promotions, guest appearances, mall openings and car insurance, along with my hugely popular Now That’s What I Call Habibi 2000 compilation series. Later this year I’m bringing out my very own personalized headphones, the DJH2Ks.

What is the essence of clubbing to you? To me, clubbing is something that should not be complicated. It’s about being with your friends, either shaking your hips in the cordoned-off VIP section of a dancefloor or sitting round a six-litre bottle of Grey Goose in a private booth (minimum spend AED7000), while DJ Habibi 2000 provides the soundtrack to your night.

if you had to sum up dubai’s club scene in a sentence, what would it be?Monday Groove Sessions at Club Smug, half price mojitos for ladies.

Where did the inspiration for this album come from? Being half Uruguayan and having lived in Montevideo for nearly five years, I now have a strong passion for all that is South American, specially Argentinean/Uruguayan folk music. The real inspiration though came from recording with the Trio de Cajón about a year ago. After recording the first few tracks, I had this idea of merging these traditional folk sounds we were recording with a more ‘modern’ sounds in one same project. So I thought of bringing together up-and-coming producers I had met along my musical journeys with some more established ones to try and showcase a variety of remix styles. And here we are, about a year later, ‘A L.A.S.’ is about to be placed on shelves....a bit of a dream come true for me.

matter the genre. For example, I have so many African tracks where I can’t understand a single word of what is said — but the song remains just as beautiful to my ears! in this age of digital downloads and pop culture, you’ve created the antithesis with this sprawling package, also available over 3x12” vinyl — was it a conscious reaction to the state of music, or just the way you wanted to release it? There are a number of reasons for also having a vinyl release. More than anything, being a vinyl collector myself, I couldn’t wish for anything more than pressing my own vinyl! But I also feel that the quality of the sound (specially when played on big systems in clubs) can be substantially better on vinyl than CD/digital. Given the production skills of most producers involved, it is only fair to have a limited edition vinyl release. Also, the vinyl has some exclusive tracks that are not on CD so it offers a little something extra to vinyl lovers out there. How did you manage to convince big names like Mark Farina and the Orb to get involved in the project? The funny thing is that none of the producers involved needed any ‘convincing’.

It seemed like the idea of the project really appealed to everyone... this was something new, something fresh. Having producers like Mark Farina, Stimming, Clandestein Ein from ‘Up Bustle & Out’, Ralf from Mo’Horizons, Dan Brookes from the Brookes Brothers, Argenis Brito from Señor Coconut, etc — all masters in their own styles — allowed for the album to really showcase some world class production skills. The nice thing in all of this was that we also managed to include a couple of Dubai-based talented producers to the mix as well.

And knowing what you know now, would you do the project again? Without a doubt! As a matter of fact I already have a few ideas for an evolution to ‘A L.A.S.’ . The first step is the most challenging one: once you get that out of the way, you know how to improve your approach for the next time. There’s always room for improvement. Desmo Records has already got a couple of releases ready to go out towards the end of 2012 which might even include some fresh talent residing in Dubai. My worst ever job was... Posing as a pro basketball player around Dubai’s shopping malls to promote a soft drink. All I had to do was dribble a basketball for 6 hours a day and I got paid peanuts for that!

My favourite ever record is... Robert Miles — Fable (although I actually bought it in CD format. Ooops, that told a lot about my age!)

dJing is much like... Conducting an orchestra, if your crowd or listeners aren’t moved, you’re not doing it right. (Deep!)

if i could change one thing about anything it would be... Going back in time to March the 1st, 1994 and stop the birth of Justin Beiber! I know I’d do the world a favour.

My biggest dJ achievement to date is.... Successfully beat-matching for the first time. It was the moment I was confident I could be a DJ, but then it only lasted for a few seconds.

if you could dJ in any decade which would it be... In the 1950s, in Jamaica to be specific. I want to steal the glory from Sir Coxsone Dodd and Scratch Perry by creating the biggest soundsystem, discovering Bob Marley and The Wailers and go down in history as the greatest ‘Selecta’ of all time (and probably consider renaming Ska and Reggae after me).

if i could go back-to-back with any other dJ it would be... DJ Marky, I just want to know how he does his up-side down scratch technique work!

i’m not a politician but... I wish I was. Politics is a dirty game, and I love getting dirty!

Album Reviews...JACK WHITE’S FIRST solo album: so you’re thinking yelping vocals, guitar pyrotechnics to put Jimi Hendrix to shame and enough blues and Americana to bring Robert Johnson back from the brink? Well, almost. On tracks like lead single ‘I’m Shakin’ - which is the album’s sole cover - his axe work is to the fore, and while not quite up there with ‘Seven Nation Army,’ it’s still got more hooks than an abattoir. But it’s a standout song in an excellent album, where his normally guitar freneticism is toned down in favour of some excellent piano work and drums that put Meg to shame (ie they’re on time). And while it might be easy to view this album as his break up album (he recently split with his wife of 6 years), she contributes backing vocals on 3 tracks, while the subject material is White’s normal blend of off-the-cuff lyrics and retro blues cliches. This then is the sound of Jack White embracing his one true love, music, and allowing his once-in-a-generation talent to break out and shine. Andy Buchan

LONE IS THE CREATIVE vision of Nottingham producer Matt Cutler. His is a unique sound, one that resonates with lost nights down the arcades playing pixelated video games, like a modern day Outrun soundtrack. Think driving down a sun-kissed, palm tree lined coast road in California, blasting tunes out in your 8-bit Ferrari. If any of that makes any sense, you’ll probably love this album. Galaxy Garden is more varied in sound and scale than his previous records. ‘Crystal Caverns’ screams with early rave influence, while the dreamy vocals and rolling bass of ‘As A Child’ bring a more heavyweight feel to proceedings. But the pick of the bunch has to be the simply gorgeous voice in ‘Spirals’ .It’s out on R&S Records now, and if you’re a quality electronic music fan, come highly recommended. The stunning artwork from Konx-om-Pax is also worth a special mention. GarethisOnit

A US man completed a triathlon in less than two hours while juggling three balls the entire time. Joe Salter, 31, from Pensacola, Florida, swam a quarter of a mile, biked 16.2 miles and ran four miles. Mr Salter, who has been juggling since he was eight years old, said it had been a long-standing ambition. “I dropped balls three times while I was in the water and I was wondering if I should count them as ‘dropped balls’ since they just floated on the surface and didn’t actually drop. “It would have been worse if I had dropped them while biking!”

dUBAi: The bar bills of booze-swilling Dubai bankers were once again making international headlines across the internet yesterday, thanks to an eye-watering receipt left in one of the city’s newest hangouts. The bill, which was posted across various social media sites by an unnamed employee of Club Smug, includes just one small bottle of water, with the total coming to a shocking AED8 ($2). Within hours, the internet was ablaze with outraged residents from across the UAE and beyond, and #twodollartramp was the second highest trending topic on Twitter (after #panarabiaenquirer). “It’s the worst thing I’ve ever seen, ban this monster” tweeted DJ Habibi 2000, a popular Dubai DJ and personality, from his @DJHabibi2000 account. While the name of the customer is unknown, sources from Club Smug claim he was a broker and worked in Dubai’s International Financial Centre. “It’s just shameful that someone can come here and buy a bottle of cheap water during the current international financial situation while others are splashing out over $100,000 on bottle of Cristal,” said Club Smug owner Peregrine Farqua-Tosschops, adding that the mysterious water buyer was no longer welcome in the luxury, 7-star, VVVIP nightspot. “Ideally, this man should be hounded out of the city.” Similar sentiments were being shared last night across the bars of the Dubai International Financial Centre, where the anonymous banker was a topic on the lips of most finance workers. “Whoever he is, he’s an absolute disgrace to his profession,” said Reginald Platinum-Ballbag, a 34-year-old stock market analyst as he ordered another magnum of Dom Perignon.
