Dear Worldwideans,
Seasons Greetings!
We have just returned from the Half Yearly Performance Review held at Delhi early this week. The
Management team and all HODs are hopeful of achieving their target numbers, even though there are
some minor blips on the way. I am sure with concerted effort from all of us with a bit of luck, the
budget numbers can be easily achieved 100% by all branches. All HODs and the Sales teams are
requested to put in their heart and soul into the task. We are also sanguine of the future prospects
for FY 19-20, due to increased US tariff against China and other new economic developments within
India.
Bharath and his team are implementing a new system to automate the processes for operations. I
request everyone to provide full support to him in migrating to the new system. As discussed in the
performance review meeting, this would only make our life easier by saving on our efforts. Besides
making the processes error-free, this is the need of the hour to automate our processes. Our
competition is fast catching up and we need to be proactive in this area by moving to a digitalized
system. It is the duty of every HOD to cascade this message down to every rank and file.
The spirit of Diwali and Laxmi Pooja is going to keep us busy in the coming days. People have
different beliefs and sentiments attached to Diwali but a common emotion of immense joy and
happiness is what binds us all together. When Diwali brings us so much joy and excitement, why not
pass it to the needful and the less fortunate? Celebrate a more fulfilling Diwali this year by indulging in
some kind act of ‘giving’. That way you not just light up your own houses but also spread some light
into others’ lives too.
May this Diwali enlighten our hearts; I wish you & your family a delightful and safe Diwali!
Wishing you all the best!
Regards,
Bala

Evolution of an Office:
Moore's Law is a computing term which originated around 1970. The simplified version of this
law states that processor speeds, or overall processing power for computers will double every
two years.
Many industries and companies got decimated as Moore’s Law tsunami swept across the first half
of the chessboard. The impact created by the tsunami is beautifully captured in the video given
below. Click on the link below to watch this interesting video.

Destiny Designing
Contributed by: Roopa, HR
This season of Diwali, I wish each Worldwidean and their family members a Happy Diwali and may
this year bring a heart-filled contentment and joy.
I wish to share an article by Mahatria Ra about Designing our Destiny and the journey towards it.
The journey of progress is as fascinating as the destination itself. Here is the way………..
It really does not matter what you have or how much you have; what really matters is what
you do with what you have. That’s been the journey of all great people.
The modern curse is the cribbing of most managers | leaders that they don’t have the team or the
right customers to grow their businesses or performance. Ironically, all the great Brands and
organizations in the world did not get built by the size of the investment | capital, but by the power
of an idea and a business model that supported that idea. Game changers in every field, used what
they had to achieve what they dreamt of.
You begin. You go as far as you can see. And, when you reach there, you will see further. You start.
Keep growing. Keep going. And, keep on going.
Washington, Churchill, Disney, Edison, Einstein, Graham Bell – all of them had learning disabilities.
Charles Dickens, Alexander, Caesar, Napoleon – all of them suffered from epilepsy.
History makers didn’t focus on their deprivations. They focused on what they can do with what they
had.
Being small-made didn’t affect Tendulkar or Bradman from achieving cricketing greatness. In spite of
being diagnosed of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in his 5th grade, Michael Phelps created
history in Olympics. Even after he became deaf, Beethoven continued to create great music.
With your limited vocabulary, you can still be an effective communicator. Even with a lesser IQ, but
with effective utilization of whatever intelligence you have, you can scale great heights. In spite of a
limited past in terms of success, a phenomenal future decorated with success can still be achieved.
Start from where you can start. Use what you have. Do what you can. Keep growing. Keep going.
If I consistently keep bettering my best, then one day I will
find myself becoming better than the best.
Etch this in your heart. Imbibe this into your DNA.
“I will begin from where I can begin, for I understand,
SMALL BEGINNING
WITH INCREMENTAL IMPROVEMENT
AND
SUSTAINED PROGRESS
Will lead to humungous possibilities”
I will begin from where I can begin
Overcome inertia. There are no perfect starts. Rather, you start and keep on improving.
for I understand, SMALL BEGINNING…..
From a drop of protoplasm to fully grown life, from an idea to a global brand…..no beginning is small.
To begin in itself is big.
WITH INCREMENTAL IMPROVEMENT….
Linear or exponential, doesn’t matter but there must be continuous improvement. That’s progress.
AND SUSTAINED PROGRESS…..
The hallmark of greatness is consistency and sustenance. “Long Enough” is the mantra.
Will lead to humungous possibilities…..
Most and more is awaiting you. See you at the top.
Worldwideans, let this season of celebration start afresh with Designing our
Destiny.
Food and beverages giant Pepsico will become the first company in the country to move its containers
from Kolkata to Varanasi using inland waterways. The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) will
transport Pepsico’s container cargo from Kolkata to Varanasi via National Waterway-1 on the Ganga
on October 30, an official statement said. The 16 containers — equivalent to 16 truckloads — will
reach Varanasi in 9-10 days. The mode of communication is considered both cost effective and
environment friendly.
The container cargo transport reduces handling cost, allows easier modal shift, reduces pilferages and
damage, and enables cargo owners to reduce their carbon footprint. The government is developing
NW-1 (Ganga) under the Jal Marg Vikas Project (JMVP) from Haldia to Varanasi (1,390 km) with the
technical and financial assistance of the World Bank at an estimated cost of Rs 53.69 billion.
Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) will make its foray into Public-Private Partnership (PPP) as
it hands over the operation and management of its terminals in Kolkata to Summit Alliance Port East
Gateway (India) Pvt. Ltd (SAPEL) on a supply, operate and maintain (SOM) model. The handing over
will be done in the presence of Shipping Secretary, Mr Gopal Krishna, at an event in Kolkata.
The development of both Kolkata and Patna terminals is being undertaken with a view to tap the huge
potential of Nepal-bound containerized cargo on NW-1. While the available cargo upstream (for
Nepal) at present is 44,000 TEUs, the cargo potential downstream stands at 12,000 TEUs.
Barging from Kolkata to Patna will lead to cost saving by approximately 24 per cent and 4 per cent as
compared to road and rail, respectively, when return cargo is available. Barging from Kolkata to
Kathmandu will lead to cost savings by approximately 13 per cent and 26 per cent as compared to
road and rail, respectively, when return cargo is available from around Patna.
Mediterranean Shipping Co. (MSC) has announced its new cooperation with CMA CGM and COSCO
on the IMED service, to give the trade a fast and direct service between the Indian Subcontinent,
Turkey and East Mediterranean ports. The IMED service will be operated with 7 vessels of 9,000 TEUs
capacity, of which MSC will provide 5 vessels and CMA CGM and COSCO will provide 1 vessel each.
The port rotation is: Mundra, Nhava Sheva, Colombo, King Abdullah, Port Said, Mersin, Piraeus,
Tekirdag, Istanbul, Mersin, Iskenderun, King Abdullah, Salalah, Jebel Ali, Mina Khalifa, Hamad, Jubail,
Jebel Ali, Mundra. The joint service will commence from Hamad on November 12, 2018.
The vessel call of the CHX service by Maersk Line at the newly developed Adani Ennore Container
Terminal at Kamarajar Port Ltd took place on October 20, 2018. The first mainline container vessel,
M.V. Leonidio, berthed at AECTPL on the same day. It brought in 486 laden TEUs and carried 287 TEUs
from KPL. Maersk Line plans to have a weekly call of the CHX service at the facility.
KPL has developed a dedicated railway siding for handling containers inside the port. It has also
signed a co-user joint undertaking agreement with AECTPL for unloading/loading of boxes handled at
the terminal. The first rake comprising 59 imported containers (28 TEUs and 31 FEUs) was evacuated
from the KPL railway siding to ICD Whitefield, Bangalore on October 23. Container Corporation of
India, the train operator, has scheduled regular services between the port and ICD Whitefield.
Trade tariffs between the US, China and Europe add to the problems confronting the global shipping
industry, which was already struggling this year with weak demand and high fuel prices. Container
ships, which move $4 trillion worth of products each year, are suffering from weak freight rates, owing
to a glut of boats in the water. Despite consolidation that has left the market dominated by a handful
of players, companies have recently issued profit warnings, suspended some sailings and scrapped a
planned IPO.
The first round of tariffs kicked off on 26th
Oct, affecting $34 billion worth of Chinese products, with
Beijing saying it will retaliate, slapping similar levies on U.S. imports. The moves mostly apply to
engines, medical equipment, semiconductors and other products that account for about 6% of total
China-U.S. container-trade capacity, according to the Journal of Commerce.
Qatar Airways Cargo has rolled out a fully automated mail management system at more than 50
stations across its global network in what it says is a first for the industry. It has also signed an
agreement with leading logistics solutions provider Descartes to integrate the Descartes Velocity Mail
(vMail) solution with its in-house cargo management information system, Cargo Reservations,
Operations, Accounting and Management Information Systems (CROAMIS) for electronic data
interchange messaging.
The airmail logistics chain is thus automated from origin to final destination, said the Middle East
carrier, removing any need for manual data entry and improving the efficiency, accuracy and
transparency of the carrier’s QR Mail product. Advantages include easy billing, robust revenue
accounting and real-time track and trace of mail consignments. QR CEO said that the system is
expected to benefit the e-commerce sector in particular.
Deutsche Post DHL Group will transfer its supply chain operations in China to SF Holding in a ten-year
strategic partnership to grow this business in China. As part of this deal, Deutsche Post DHL Group (DP
DHL) will receive an upfront payment of RMB5.5bn (approximately €700m) and a revenue-based
partnership fee over the next decade. SF Holding, a leading premium logistics service provider in the
country, will have access to DP DHL’s best-in-class supply chain services, management expertise,
transportation and warehousing technology.
Turkey’s Istanbul New Airport will have a “soft opening” on October 29, with a “big bang” launch at
the end of December when Turkish Airlines and other carriers begin passenger services with bellyhold
capacity.
Turkish Cargo has confirmed that it will move its freighter operation to the new hub next year, where
it will be joined by integrators DHL, UPS and FedEx, which are building their own facilities in the
dedicated airfreight area, the Cargo City, located between the two main runways for easy access to the
ramps.
