This is the eye's sharpest visual point, which is crucial for performing detailed activities like computer work, driving, and reading. It is the leading cause of partial blindness for those over age 60; causing more problems than cataracts or glaucoma. It affects more than 10 million people in the United States alone. Therapy and injections can help treat the condition. Types of macular degeneration The disease is common among those over 50. It affects Asians and Caucasians more than other races and strikes more women than men. It can occur quickly or develop over time. There are two common types -- wet and dry -- and some rare varieties. These include cystic, diabetic, juvenile, senile and wet macular degeneration. The dry form occurs slowly as macular cells cease to function. Unfortunately for many, this can also be a precursor to the wet form. The wet form occurs when new blood vessels grow abnormally. They leak blood and fluid, destroying the macula. Cysts in the eye can also lead to macular degeneration. The diabetic form is self-explanatory. The juvenile form is inherited. In the senile form, muscles around the eye are also affected. Increase Your Stamina hashmihealthcare.com Enhance your Performance and Self-Esteem with Healthy Way! It has proven effective, improving vision among 60% of patients undergoing the procedure. It injects the drug Verteporfin, which travels to the eye and sticks to the surface of newly formed vessels. Once it is in place, a laser beam is used to activate the drug, causing it to close down selected blood vessels. Injections Drugs are designed to slow growth of blood vessels that lead to wet macular degeneration. They include Avastin, Lucentis and Macugen. Avastin is an "off-label" drug because it was approved as an inhibitor to blood vessel growth associated with colon cancer. Nonetheless, those using the drug for macular degeneration believe it to be viable. Each treatment lasts about four months. The average cost is around $150 per treatment. Macugen was the first drug approved by the FDA for use in treating macular degeneration. It is injected directly into the vitreous fluid of the eye. Several injections may be required before improvement is seen. Its has proven reasonably effective in slowing the disease's progression. The cost is around $1,500 per treatment. Lucentis is also injected into the eye, once a month for up to four months. Like Avastin and Macugen, it works to prevent blood vessel growth that could contribute to the disease. It is considered by some to be the most effective of the three drugs, with a success rate around 95 percent. The cost per treatment is around $2,000.
