DESCRIPTION
The hills and valleys of Le Marche are some of the most beautiful in Italy. More rolling than the north with a greater concentration of hilltop villages and a greater variation in agriculture and horticulture, creating the magical patchwork quilt of colours throughout the year.

Charcoal pile: an ancientmethod of preparing charcoal
The Marche is a Region of Italy wherehistory, culture and countryside havehelped to create a unique andextraordinary world that is worthdiscovering.Visiting its inland areas offers touristsa chance of enjoying the peaceful, wellordered atmosphere of its quiet, gentlyrolling hills. It also provides anopportunity to find inner and culturalenrichment from works of art and thehistorical, literary and legendarysignificance of places in the mostunexpected corners of this extensivearea. The historical and culturalheritage of the region, including itsnumerous works of art, can be foundmore or less everywhere. This is due tothe fact that each town was ruled overby its own lord or prelate and, duringthe centuries of conflict that dividedthe various towns of the region, artistswere able to work by moving fromtown to town. The natural beauty of its hilly
countryside, covering 69% of theMarche region, blends well with thetransformations wrought by man overthe course of time through agriculture, forestry and sheep and cattle grazing,as well as more recent craft andindustrial activity.A living testimony of this process, the

result of a centuries-old culture andhistory, are the ancient Roman roads. The Via Salaria, created by the Picenitribes, was used by the Romans to linkthe capital of the empire with theAdriatic Sea (known as “ the saltcoast”), while the Via Flaminia, theconsular road built as a route to the
ager gallicus, ended at Fano. At theFurlo Gorge it is still possible to walkby foot along a stretch of this road andthrough the tunnel cut by chisel duringthe reign of Emperor Vespasian.Wandering through the hills andvalleys of the Marche you come acrosssmall towns, often the colour of terracotta, perched on high like scenicbalconies overlooking valleys, surrounded by walls, with municipaltowers and bell-towers. For centuries, the history of these towns wasdetermined either by princes, whosenotion of devotion was to buildchurches after having destroyedcastles, or warrior popes, who builtcastles and fortresses. Many historical pageants are stillstaged in the old town centres, alongwith spectacular festivitiescommemorating religious festivitiesduring carnival. Sometimes the hillsides are broken byareas of eroded landscape, many of

which are truly fascinating, especiallyin the area around the MarecchiaValley (near the ruins of the historicalFortress of Maiolo) and in the provinceof Ascoli Piceno, in the districts aroundCastignano and Appignano del Tronto. The natural scenery of the Marcheconsists mainly of farmland.
Despite the great changes that havetaken place in the region, historicalevidence of this evolution can still befound today - from the thousands oftowns and villages that provided alocalised agricultural systemthroughout the region, to the dense andancient network roads and the wealth

of individual monuments (parishchurches, abbeys, monasteries, villas, towers, castles, furnaces and mills). The rural aspect of the hilly countrysideof the Marche was moulded by themezzadria, or share-cropping system, and by mixed-farming, today partlyreplaced by intensive and specialisedagriculture, as in the case of the orchards of the AsoValley or the vineyards that extend asfar as the eye can see in the EsinoValley and the Picene hills. Many old villas and country houseshave now been turned into agriturismofarm holiday centres, especially in thehilly areas, providing peacefulaccommodation, an opportunity to
purchase organic produce or to enjoytraditional Marche cooking. From the amazingly pleasant hillylandscape you move to imposing rockymountains that are crossed by eye-catching gorges. Near Cagli, for instance, along the ViaFlaminia, are the gorges of the Gola
del Burano and the impressive Goladel Furlo, where a State NatureReserve has been created. At the beginning of the 4 th century BC, the river Esino marked theboundary between the area occupied bythe Piceni and that conquered by Celtictribes of the Senonian Gauls. In the
areas of Serra San Quirico and Genga, the valley arrives at the breathtakinglimestone cliffs of the Gola dellaRossa and Gola di Frasassi, whichform part of the Natural Park.Over 90,000 hectares of land in theMarche, nearly 10% of the regionalterritory, are subject to safeguard in the

form of protected areas. Two nationalparks (Monti Sibillini and Gran Sassoe Monti della Laga) cover over 60,000hectares of land in the Marche region.Four regional parks (Sasso Simone eSimoncello, Gola della Rossa e di Frasassi and, on the coast, MonteSan Bartolo and Monte Conero) coverabout 20,000 hectares. There are also 5nature reserves (Abbadia di Fiastra,Montagna di Torricchio, Gola delFurlo, Ripa Bianca and Sentina)covering over 6,000 hectares, withover 100 areas of protected flora and15 national forests. The jewel of the Marche region is theMonti Sibillini area. These mountainsbecame a national park in 1993 - withheadquarters at Visso - and cover over
70,000 hectares, with a length ofaround 40 km. The park includes 16Marche and 2 Umbrian municipaldistricts. The territory containsevidence of Quaternary glaciation andAlpine species of flora and fauna canalso be found. The magnificent naturalscenery has been created byatmospheric forces over thousands andthousands of years. Deep glacialcirques provide evidence of thestrength and power of ancient glaciersto model the landscape. This isparticularly evident on Monte Rotondo,Monte Vettore, Monte Bove and in theupper Val di Panico. Many of the mountains rise above 2,000metres, including Monte Vettore (2,476m), where Lago di Pilato, the onlynatural lake in the Marche, is the homeof the small, rare bright red colouredchirocephalus Marchesonii. Not faraway is Monte Sibilla (2,173 m) wherea prophetess, famous throughoutEurope, once lived - a place with anatmosphere and history all of its own.

The vegetation of the park ischaracterised by large areas of oak andbeech. Above 1750 m, on the alpinemeadows, there are also rare species of lily (Lilium martagon), violet (Violaeugenia), alpine dryad (Chamaedrysalpinum), edelweiss (Leontopodiumalpinum), artemisia, and other flowers
such as uva orsina (Arctostaphylosuva-ursi) and dwarf willow (Salixnanus), considered to be the world’ssmallest tree. The Sibillini mountains are interestingfrom the point of view of their animallife, owing to the presence of the wolf(Canis lupus), the wild cat (Felissilvestris), the eagle ( Aquilachrysaetus) and the Peregrine falcon(Falco peregrinus). Nature and culturecome together in this protected areabecause excursions to the Goladell’Infernaccio, or walks along thehighest peaks or the Valle del Fiastronealso allow us to discover the history ofancient villages with their wealth ofRomanesque churches, frescoes andlate Gothic art, such as polyptychspainted by followers of Carlo Crivelli. At the southern end of the SibilliniMountains, Arquata del Tronto, withits superb medieval fortress, is the onlytown in Italy to be located in twoNational Parks. The Monti SibilliniNational Park in fact merges into theGran Sasso e Monti della LagaNational Park without interruption. Here the landscape is made up ofsandy marl rocks, thick woodland and

In additionto beech (Fagus silvatica), there arebilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus),Martagone lily (Lilium martagon),Apennine edelweiss (Leontopodiumalpinum) and various species oforchids. In the majestic forests it isalso possible to find red deer ( Cervus),roe deer (Capreolus), wolf (Canislupus), and brown bear (Ursus arctos).Amongst the bird life, the golden eagle(Aquila chrysaetus), falcon (Falcobiarmicus), Cornish chough(Pyrrhocorax) and eagle-owl (Bubobubo) can be seen.A number of villages in this area arewell worth visiting. These include the

Here youwill find beech and silver fir trees -one of only two places in the Marchewhere this tree can be found.Charcoal is still produced in this areawith the ancient methods used byApennine charcoal burners.
Another area fine walking area is theSasso Simone e Simoncello regionalpark, in the heart of Montefeltro. HereCosimo dei Medici built his famous“Città del Sole”, of which only a fewremains now survive. The woodlandshere include the delightful beechwoods of Pianacquadio. The many finepanoramic settings includeMonteboaggine, whose solitary 12th
century Torre di Vedetta looks out overthe wide grasslands of MonteCarpegna and the Foglia and Conca
valleys. Around the two rocks ofSimone and Simoncello, the claylandscape is wooded mainly withturkey oak (Quercus cerris). Howeverthis great Mediterranean-mountainforest, which is unique of its kind, alsohas beech (Fagus silvatica), both blackand white hornbeam (Carpinusbetulus), maple (Acer campestre), ash(Fraxinus excelsior), holly (Ilexaquifolium), mountain ash (Sorbusaucuparia) and service tree (Sorbusdomestica). Red deer (Cervus), roedeer (Capreolus) and the Apenninewolf (Canis lupus) wander in this wildarea. It is also possible to see eagles(Aquila chrysaetus), goshawks (Astur

Theriver Sentino has carved its waythrough the Frasassi Gorge, producinga complex system of undergroundcaves called the Grotte di Frasassi, considered among the most interestingin the world. Thousands of visitorscome to see these caves every year .The quiet tour through takes about anhour and every step of the way ismarked by beautiful tiny lakes,naturally-carved stalactites and giantstalagmites, passing through themagnificent Abisso Ancona (240 mhigh), to the Sala dei Duecento, theSala delle Candeline and Saladell’Orsa and the Sala dell’Infinito, each made even more spectacular withthe dramatic use of lighting. Some ofthe earliest traces of humansettlements can be found in theFrasassi region (in the Grotta delPrete at Pianello di Genga). Otherevidence has been found in the Grotta

di San Eustachio near San SeverinoMarche, in the Grotta dei Frati in theFiastrone Gorge, in the Grotta diSoffiano near Sarnano and in manyother places. The Gola della Rossa is similar inappearance to that of Frasassi withlarge karst cavities such as the Grottadel Vernino where various interestingfossils of cave mammals have beenfound. Not far from Jesi, along the Esinoriver, you enter the Ripa Biancaprotected area. Further south, in theprovince of Macerata, are the naturereserves of Fiastra Abbey andMontagna di Torricchio. The first ofthese conserves a farm landscape thathas retained aspects of its medievalpast, including the monumental abbeyerected by the Cistercian monks in1142 by “quarrying” stone from theancient Roman city of Urbs Salvia. The woodland area planted mainlywith turkey oak (Quercus cerris)provides naturalistic interest. The Torricchio Nature Reserve on theother hand, near the SibilliniMountains National Park, covers anarea of 317 hectares and landscapethat is typical of high Marche hillcountry. It has been recognised as aCouncil of Europe biogeneticreserve. The Sentina, inside San Benedetto delTronto, is an interesting humid zonerecently recognized as protected area. You can find many areas around theinland Marche for a relaxing holidayat any time of the year. These areespecially ideal for those who wish toavoid the overcrowded traditionaltourist resorts along the coast or for
those seeking peace and quiet, withopportunities for walking and leisureactivities for those who enjoy horse-riding, canoeing, golf, fishing, jogging, mountain-biking, hang-gliding,para-gliding, mountaineering, etc. There are nine ski resorts in themountains of the Marche Apennines, with slopes of varying length andmany beginner slopes at varyingaltitudes (from 1000 m at Villagrandeto 2260 m at Ussita), but alsointeresting routes for those whoenjoy cross-country skiing, grass ski-ing, hiking and mountaineering. The most popular ski-lifts are thoseat Sarnano, Ussita, Castelsantangelosul Nera and Bolognola in theprovince of Macerata; ForcaCanapine (Arquata del Tronto) andMonte Piselli in the province of

For thosewho enjoy cross-country skiing, thereare runs at Piani di Ragnolo in the areaof Acquacanina (MC).A visit to the inland Marche alsoprovides the opportunity of discoveringmany traditional crafts that are stillpractised in workshops. Pottery, copper, terracotta, majolica, lace work, hand-made carpets, woodenpipes, hats, wrought-iron, leather, musical instruments, toys, footwear, furniture, gold-work, paper made usingtraditional methods, travertine stone, marble, stonework, wicker work, rushmats, straw-work, bamboo work, restoration of antique furniture, etc.,are among the more important craftsand industrial products of the region. Another interesting aspect of theMarche is that each change in thelandscape brings a different culinarytradition. As one gradually movesaway from the coast towards themountains, the smell of fresh Adriaticfish is replaced by typical inlandflavours. There are so many dishesand specialities to taste and enjoy:“vincisgrassi”, “olive ascolane”,“maccheroncini di Campofilone”,“ciauscolo”, “frustingo”, “bostrengo”,“formaggio di fossa di Talamello”, the
