Welcome to the second edition of our e-magazine!!

How quickly time has flown since the first edition, and

similarly, in the blink of an eye, ‘Wonderful

Warrnambool’ has come and gone!!

Regrettably, I was unable to attend conference, but

from all accounts, definitely a very ‘hatty’ affair. Thus,

not being there, makes it very difficult to prepare a

report for the Magazine, but there is always another

way. I decided to ask two of our not quite first time

attendee members to conference, to prepare a report for

me on their impressions of Conference.

In my club, the IWC of Sunshine Coast, we have two

Megs, or as we know them, Meg and the other Meg.

Good friends and travelling companions for many

years, and to me, they seemed the ideal choice to

furnish this report.

Before I give you their report, I wish to take a moment

to look forward to the next issue of the Magazine

which is due for distribution at the end of January

2016. Club Correspondents and District Editors, we

will need some very smart pen work, please, as I will

need the contributions to be with me by the 20th

January. This date will allow for reports to contain

information as to how the clubs celebrated Inner

Wheel Day, and could also include plans for any

Australia Day celebrations that the clubs may have

had. Timing is tight, and it is the Christmas recess, but

I am sure if you give your clubs sufficient warning of

what is required, they will rise to the occasion.

Reports can be up to 75 words – a précis, not an essay

is great, and good quality photographs are more than

welcome – as I said before, ‘doing ones’ are especially

welcome.

Ladies, I wish all of you the compliments of the

season, stay safe and well, look after yourself and look

after your friends – you are all precious. We look

forward to a successful 2016 as we gather pace

towards the International Inner Wheel Convention in

Melbourne in 2018!!

For those, like me, who were not able to be at

conference, let’s catch up with what happened, and for

those who were there – enjoy the memories of

‘Wonderful Warrnambool’

As always – hugs,

Lesley.

Banner Parade Each District represented - banners

erected – beautifully meaningful.

Guest Speaker – Jean Kittson, from her book,

“You’re Still Hot To Me”, spoke of her involvement in

many organisations: particularly important to her is

Cord Blood Funding. 14 years

ago she was introduced to IW

by Anne McGill and from

there her participation thrived.

She made a comparison

between the early Doctors who

treated without research and

came up with appropriate treatments for the time, and

Cord Blood research. We are providing funds which

change the landscape of research. She reinforced that

as women, we have a voice and it is our responsibility

to get involved as we in IW do. Jean informed us that

there are 8 different gynaecological cancers, and still

no detection for Ovarian Cancer. Her talk was

delivered with delightful humour.

Three Flags for three Nations - Australia, New

Zealand and Belgium, and the three National anthems

were played.

Official Opening Address Charlotte De Vos, very

brief and succinct.

Opening Address IWA President Kay Morland

during which she specifically thanked the members of

President Kay also formally introduced New Zealand

Inner Wheel President Di Patchett.

Reports Anne McGill gave figures of our donations to

Cord Blood being $2,264,572.00 and 38 grants given.

At conference another three grants will be presented.

(Details will be in Read the Red).

Guest Speaker Narelle Skidmore spoke of the healing

her husband had received as a recipient of Cord Blood

Stem Cells. His journey had been long and devastating

until the transplant. Five years from the onset of cancer,

Vaughn is well and working again, and living his

dream.

Friday 16th October Gala Dinner

This was held at the Brauer College in the large

gymnasium. Starting time of 6.30pm was not upheld

and entrée was on the tables before we arrived,

(6.00pm), and was left in front of us for one and a half

hours. The opening did not start until 7.20pm. Apart

from that, the evening was pleasant with entertainment

and companionship. Finishing time of 10.30pm was a

little late.

Business Meeting Saturday 17th October

After official formalities the meeting was adjourned to

hold the AGM which was conducted efficiently.

Business Meeting reconvened. Reports from the

Executive Committee and others.

Expressions of interest have been shown to reopen a

club in PNG under the A76.

Media Administrator has a new web site up and

running.

Face Book social media is being successfully used to

promote IW activities.

IIW 2018 Convention, Exhibition Centre Melbourne

reported all functions to be held within the precinct.

Offers of help needed.

Conference Co-ordinator 2015 Susan Parry reported

397 registrations (126 male), but the 25 cancellations

are the largest on record.

All District Chairmen reported on their year’s

activities. Regrettably three clubs have handed back

their Charters.

General Business - Proposals and Amendment.

Comment: 30 clubs did not return their voting papers!

Proposal No. 1 - re Video presentation with nominations

for IWA Vice President.

166.

Needed 124 to pass. Total 120 Lost by 4!!!

Proposal No. 2 - Club audits - Carried.

Address by IIW President Charlotte De Vos

President Charlotte spoke to her theme ‘Unique and

United’. In creating the “Hand Prints” one of her

grandchildren objected to getting his hands dirty, and

was a little bit of a problem needing encouragement to

participate – so it is with most families, there is often

one who has their own ideas!

President Charlotte lives near Flanders and quoted the

beautiful Flanders Poem, “In Flanders fields the

scarlet poppies grow”... A brief and beautiful address.

Lunch was well organised and dietary needs catered

for.

Guest Speaker Karen Foster

Karen brought her business vision forward,

encouraging her “people first” policy, for acquiring

quality involvement from staff. This was very relevant

for all members.

Guest Speaker Rachael Robertson

Rachael inspired us all with her tales of leadership on

the foundation that “respect trumps harmony”.

IWA Conference 2016, Warringah, NSW.

19th- 23rd October.

A51 members gave a very snazzy presentation to

encourage members to attend this fun event. Partying

is their theme.

IWA Conference 2017 - a Host District is required!!

IWANZ - is a recently formed group of any IW

members who come together in Australia and New

Zealand for friendship and building support. This is

independent of any Governing Bodies, self-funded

and is expected to expand once established. Inaugural

gathering Christchurch 28th April – 4th May 2016 with

the theme “Rebuild and Rejuvenate”. Open to all IW

members.

Farewell Dinner was also held at the Brauer College

with table centre pieces of the most wonderful hats

made by the members of Warrnambool IW Club.

These also served as the raffle prize for each table.

Again the meal service was a little slow, but the food

nice and the entertainment good, especially the

Ukelele Band – had many a toe tapping.

The Memorial Service on Sunday morning was an

absolutely beautiful moving tribute to Inner Wheel

members, sadly no longer with us. The dedication of

some, apart from that to Inner Wheel, was totally

outstanding with some members volunteering with

other organisations for up to 40 plus years of service.

This service was a lovely way

to wind up the “Wonderful

W a r r n a m b o o l ’ 2 0 1 5

Conference.

The start of 2015-2016 has been very exciting for our

project. Three wonderful results – the sale of our roses,

winning an award and presenting three grants to

researchers.

Grants – It was very exciting to see 3 grants to the

value of $65,000 each, being awarded at the

Conference. Meeting our grant recipients is very

rewarding for our members and the three recipients

were very happy to meet our members.

The grants are:-

Dr Alla Dolnikov: "Development of Novel Immuno-

therapies from Cord Blood".

Dr Ngaire Elwood et al: "Towards Establishment of a

Cord Blood Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell Bank for

Therapeutic Use".

Dr Margie Castillo-Melendez et al: "Umbilical Cord

Derived Endothelial Progenitor Cells for the Treatment

of Brain injury in Growth Restricted Newborns".

We now have 251 members in our IWA CBR

Facebook Group. This is a good vehicle for spreading

our news about our Cord Blood Research Project far

and wide. Photos and articles about functions or cord

blood research have been forwarded to me and I have

downloaded them to share with the members.

Information is knowledge, and encourages enthusiasm.

If anyone has photos or articles, or wishes to advertise

their Cord Blood Project Function, please forward the

information to me, and as long as it is relevant to our

National Project, I shall download it. Unfortunately a

couple of people have downloaded items not connected

and I have had to delete their membership.

A further extension of our project has been taking

place with the help of our members from the IWC

Wangaratta. The VCAL students from the Centre for

Further Education in Wangaratta have been assisting

our members in their Care Van project and in the

process, helped them with our Cord Blood Day last

year raising funds for our National Project.

To further their knowledge and interest in this, and in

conjunction with Patti Stafford, Prof Graham Jenkin

and myself, a visit to The Ritchie Centre was arranged.

25 students, teachers and a couple of IW members

arrived at the research facilities at the Monash Institute

of Medical Research one Thursday in August. They

were joined by IWA Pres Kay Morland, IWA

Treasurer Margaret Macdonald and myself.

Dr Suzie Miller welcomed everyone and with the

assistance of some of her team members, a Powerpoint

presentation was shown about the research work they

are doing with cord blood in relation to finding a cure

for cerebral palsy and hypoxic injury at birth. We were

then taken for a visit to their research labs where a

great deal of interest was shown in the sheep. This was

followed by a most enjoyable lunch and further

discussion about the research work. A most interesting

day, which gave the students a further understanding of

the wider community.

This visit will be acknowledged in the latest Hudson

Institute Magazine which is distributed throughout the

medical field. A huge new facility has been built at the

Monash Inst of Medical Research and the whole

complex is now known as the Hudson Institute of

Medical Research. I am very privileged to be invited to

the Official Launch in November.

How exciting it was to hear that almost 2,000 of our

‘Gift of Friendship’ roses had been sold. Treloar Roses

are very pleased with this result and of course our

project will benefit from the $1 donation from each

sale. How beautiful many gardens are going to look

when our red roses bloom in a couple of months. A

huge thank you to everyone who placed orders – we

have not only told Australia about our project – Cord

Blood Research, but have advertised our organization

throughout Australia in three very popular Australia

wide magazines.

In A62 there are four Clubs in the City of Casey. There

is a magnificent Botanic Gardens with a beautiful rose

garden. The four Clubs, Berwick, Casinia, Cranbourne

and Narre Warren, along with IWA President Kay

Morland and the Mayor of Casey Mick Morland,

planted four ‘Gift of Friendship’ roses and we can now

all look forward to a leisurely

walk in the Park to watch our

roses flourish.

‘The Centre’

Finalists at State Awards

‘The Centre’ was announced as a finalist at the 2015

Victorian Learn Local Awards for the category ‘Excellence

in Creating Local Solutions’ for their community project

‘Community Cook-Ups’, with the Inner Wheel Club of

Wangaratta and their Greta Road campus VCAL students

learning to cook wholesome meals for the Carevan

Wangaratta.

The awards ceremony was held at the Collingwood Town

Hall in Melbourne on 10 September with over 220 people in

attendance from Learn Local community colleges and

neighbourhood houses from across the State.

While ‘The Centre’ did not take out the award in their

category, they were very pleased to be recognised as a

finalist in the State.

The ‘Community Cook-Ups’ project has now been running

for over 18 months with students from The Centre’s Greta

Road campus. Over 30 students have participated in the

project, contributing to 3,193 meals being served by the

Carevan Wangaratta in this period - all prepared by the

VCAL students and ladies from Inner Wheel Club of

Wangaratta. A number of students from this project

have gained employment in the hospitality industry and

often speak of the increased confidence they have

developed from interacting with the Inner Wheel ladies.

The ‘Community Cook-Ups’ project will continue into 2016

and beyond, and values the community partnerships that

have been developed on the way.

Quotes attributable to Felicity Williams, Chief Executive

Officer of ‘The Centre’.

We are really proud of this project and the positive

engagement our VCAL students from Greta Road have had

with our community. To be recognised at the State Awards

in our sector is fantastic. Seeing the students’ confidence

and skills develop is a really rewarding part of the project

and the ladies from Inner Wheel who mentor the students

with the cooking have played a crucial role in that process.

The partnerships with the Inner Wheel Club of

Wangaratta, Carevan Wangaratta and the support of

Woolworths and the Rural City have really enabled this

project to come together.

The Australian Event Awards is a huge item in the

Business and Industry world of Australia. There are

21 categories with a few thousand entries.

Our special Cord Blood Day – ‘Coin for Cord

Day’ has been recognized as a State Winner in

three States – Queensland, Tasmania and ACT, in

the ‘Best Charity or Cause-Related Event.’

When Christine McCormick, our A51 DC suggested

that IWA should enter our National Project in the

Australian Event Awards it seemed a bit over-

whelming. After a great deal of collaboration with our

now IIW Board Director Chris Kirby, IWA

President Kay Morland, National Project Committee

Members Val Gibson and Susan Parry, Christine

McCormick, Patti Stafford and the Centre for Further

Education Wangaratta, Dr Michael Doran, and Prof

Graham Jenkin, I completed the application.

How extremely excited I was to receive a text on my

mobile to say that our Cord Blood Day was a State

Winner. I then realized the powerful potential of

Facebook – only minutes after downloading the

information on to our IWA CBR Facebook page, a

message of congratulations was received from our

IIW President Charlotte, followed by congratulations

from around Australia and overseas.

The presentations are on 17th November in Sydney,

and 5 members are attending. Winning this award

opens the door into our communities and the Business

world of Australia and should provide us with many

promotional opportunities for not only our project,

but for our wonderful organization Inner Wheel.

When promoting our National Project in any way

please use the logo provided by the Australian Events

Awards Team.

My congratulations must go to the District

Coordinators and all members of IWA for their

continuing support of our National Project – Cord

Blood Research.

The Inner Wheel Club of Whorouly was Chartered

with 15 members, on Friday, 23 October 2015 at the

Remel 185 Function Centre. Extension Chairman Patti

Stafford, (complete with her foot in a ‘moon boot’),

spoke about the Club development leading up to the

Charter.

A61 District Chairman Terina Houlihan inducted

President Glenys McNamara and the 14 new

members. National Representative Bev Crowe assisted

Extension Chairman Patti Stafford in presenting each

member with their Inner Wheel Club Badge, Name

Badge, and a copy of the Constitution. National

Representative Bev Crowe also read a greeting from

International Inner Wheel President Charlotte de Vos.

Inner Wheel Australia President Kay Morland

presented each new member with a long stemmed Red

Rose and addressed the members and guests. It was a

delightful event with guests dressed in the colours of

the evening - purple or silver.

Entertainment by Trevor and the Rustic Ramblers

added to the great night of fine food, fellowship, and

friendship to welcome the members of the Inner

Wheel Club of Whorouly.

Visitors to Whorouly were encouraged to stay and

enjoy the activities over the weekend.

On the Saturday the Rotary Club of Milawa held an

Open Garden at their President's home and the

annual show was on at the nearby town of

Myrtleford. On Sunday the Whorouly Community

held a Fair at the football oval, where the fledgling

Club held their first fund raiser for the Cord Blood

Project - a dunking machine. No one was safe from a

dunking!!

When was “Inner Wheel Day” Created?

President Helena Foster (1969-1970) came up with the idea for a special day for a special organisation, so she wrote a letter to all clubs worldwide

"I would like to ask all members of clubs throughout the world to link together in ACTION ON JANUARY 10th. I have chosen this special day because it was on January 10th 1924 that the Mother Club, the Manchester Inner Wheel Club, England, first adopted the name INNER WHEEL. It can be interpreted in any way you think fit- in group or as individuals - giving personal service to someone who needs you - planting a tree or flowers to beautify some corner of your land, or just the simple act of writing a letter. I am sure that there is inspiration and encouragement to be gained by the knowledge that your fellow members throughout the world are at that moment joined together to extend service and friendship" . The response to the first celebration of Inner Wheel day was magnificent-

"We were filled with pride and happiness as the letters poured in, describing so vividly the infinite ways in which members had brought joy and comfort to so many", Editor Audrey Sargeant noted, "Hundreds of letters from Clubs all over the world testify to the success of Helena Foster's challenge".

This year our members have put their talents and time

into making candles from scratch at one of our

member’s residence. Mishaps were few, but fun and

good food a plenty. Beautifully wrapped and fragrant

candles will be sold at our regular local craft market

with profits to Cord Blood Research.

Julie Brzozowski, our current District A76 Cord Blood

Project Co-ordinator, who started TAD, has now

spread her wings to hopefully form a new club in the

Atherton Tablelands area. Good feedback thus far

should see a fifth club in District A76. All 4 clubs in

A76 are in full support of Julie and her band of girls in

making this a reality

Holdfast Marion President: Jan Arnold

and District A70 Chairman 2008-2009. Barbara will be

remembered for her friendship, fun, and her ability to

share a joke.

Bairnsdale President: Shirley Bardwell

Members brought along a brooch with an interesting or

sentimental history and related the story behind the

brooch with enthusiasm. Many brooches, and no two

alike, were worn, and their interesting history detailed.

Several were over a 100 years old. A number

belonging to great grandmothers and grandmothers,

also some with sentimental stories and values. This

proved a very entertaining and interesting evening.

Berwick President: Pat Edwards

The Inner Wheel Club of Berwick was indeed proud to

see our own Club member, Kay Morland, inducted as

President of Inner Wheel Australia 2015-2016. Kay

was inducted by another Berwick member, Past

International Inner Wheel President, Carole Buchanan.

The Club organised

the decorations for the

Friendship Dinner and

thoroughly enjoyed the

working bees in

preparation for this

event.

Colourful spring flowers made by

the Club decorated the tables and

blossom trees in full bloom were

scattered around the room.

Casinia President: Megan Ross

The club has been busy with our major annual

fundraiser - The City of Casey "Search for the Stars"

talent competition. We

catered for over 130

people and raised over

$1,200. The chocolate

brownies were a real hit.

This event is great

exposure for our new

young club.

Moe President: Julienne Nave

President Julienne has introduced “Thumbnail”

speeches where two girls will be asked to give an

outline of their life from early years, including family

background through to the current day. This is a

wonderful way of getting to know our girls and we

have found out many new things about each of them –

even telling of their courting days, similarities that we

all shared through that era.

Morwell President: Helen MacRae

Our August dinner meeting was a “Memorabilia

Night” whereby each member brought an object or

article that they highly treasured or considered their

favourite. The many Teddy Bears brought along had

well-loved signs of sucked ears and “defurred” bodies.

Family photos, a brown jug, silver propelling pen and a

jewellery box brought from Hungary, containing little

treasures that the member’s mother brought when

migrating to Australia.

Narre Warren President: Elize Shutt

On Monday the 13th July in Brundrett Road, Narre

Warren North, our club, planted a Friendship Rose at

the site where the club had erected a seat in memory of

Nepean President: Barbara Goonan

With great excitement we celebrated our 30th

Birthday. The organising committee did an amazing

job of planning a delicious meal and program, a

myriad of photos (1,500 in total) were gathered, which

tracked our history. Fortunately we have two charter

Pakenham President: Sue Blenkhorn

A night of fun and entertainment put on by a group who

dressed in beautiful Sari’s and men in coloured turbans.

Indian food, decorations, raffle prizes and a lucky dip of

bangles, little elephants,

and ladies purses and

scarfs, photos on screen,

all helped make a great

night. Some even tried

to do Bollywood

dancing!

We are very proud that

Members, President Sue

Treasurer Margaret Macdonald were honoured with

Paul Harris Fellows from the Rotary Club of Pakenham.

All for wonderful services to the community. Well done

ladies.

Warragul President: Bhavna Bhatt

The Changeover Night saw incoming President Bhavna

Bhatt put on an enjoyable night that oozed friendship

and a hint of class. We were entertained by a group of

musicians and singers from our local St Paul’s Anglican

Grammar School who performed a jazz rendition for us.

This was a major highlight of the evening; we were all

in awe of the immense talent that is in our town!

Joyce Minns

6th December 1928 - 25th July 2015

Joyce was a Charter Member of the Inner Wheel Club

of Berwick and was responsible with Nell Fox (now

deceased) for the formation of the Club and its Charter

on the 18th November 1968.

Joyce, husband Bill, and Nell and Harry Fox attended a

Rotary Conference in Tasmania and heard about Inner

Wheel and after returning home set the wheels in

motion for the formation of an Inner Wheel Club in

Berwick. Nell was the Charter President 1968-69 and

Joyce followed the following year 1969-70.

Joyce was a very active member of

the Club until recent years when ill

health prevented her from attending

meetings, but she was always

interested to follow the Club's

activities.

In years gone by, Joyce and Bill's

home was offered many, many times

for meetings and social occasions and wonderful times

of fun and laughter were enjoyed by us all. Joyce

insisted on keeping her active membership until her

death and we say a very big thank you to her for all

that she contributed to the Inner Wheel Club of

Boronia President: Val Henry

Our Club commenced the year with an amazing

Garden Tea Party for Friendship Day held at

Federation Estate in Ringwood. Nola Kneebone and

her team of enthusiastic and dedicated helpers

organised and catered the event. It was a beautiful day

and our members and guests arrived in outfits and hats

befitting the occasion.

Kinglake Ranges President: Carol Harvey

Sadly we lost our Charter Member Dorothy Powell at

the age of 83. Her eager and helpful efforts will be

missed by us and other community organizations in

which she has been involved.

The numbers attending our meetings have been

depleted due to winter trips North and foggy nights of

hibernation. We have managed to man the monthly

fundraising barbeque. In August we picked and sold

daffodils for the Cancer Council. A most successful

undertaking.

Shepparton President: Noela Laws

A cold wintery July day was warmed by the serving of

a variety of soups at our Treasurer’s home. The Guest

speaker spoke of her nursing experiences in Ireland

many years ago when she travelled there as a new

bride. Sounded like the TV series “Call The Midwife”!

Morning Coffee at “Parklake” in August as most of our

members are away on winter holidays. Donations to

Cord Blood and Midwifery at our Hospital.

Wandin President: Faith MacDonald

Wandin IWC submitted the project “Days For Girls”

as a District project and won the bid. Members formed

a working bee and fifty bags were completed.

Group outings are popular and good friendship days.

Shoe boxes are another venture for the club, 25 have

been filled ready to send for Christmas. We have had

some very informative guest speakers. Always good to

learn something new.

Wangaratta President: Sharon Scalzo

Changeover was awash with pink, tiaras, and

Australian and District royalty. We continue to share

the art of cooking with local VCAL students. This

partnership program was nominated for a state-wide

Learn Local award.

Oranges and carrots for the District chair visit

Echuca President: Lyn Stansbury

Club has many members who enjoy cooking and

gardening, so these activities centre around much of

what we do - catering for others, shared luncheons and

always a delicious cake at each

meeting.

Another tradition - members bring

a flower or something special they

have grown - [or picked on the

way through the gate] as they

come into the meeting. This one

had everyone tricked - now we

know it was ‘Beautyberry

Callicapa’.

Geelong President: Jill Graham

May: Twenty knitted rugs donated to Cottage-by-the

June: Visited “Scarecrow Patch”, a quaint rural delight

brimming with myriads of theatrical curios.

July: Outgoing president Ruth was honoured to induct

new member Morag and incoming President Jill.

August: Ginger Biscuit’s and steamy hot beverages

provided cheer on a miserable winter’s day.

Hamilton President: Jo Howell

Now it’s Spring and time to recall the previous six

months. Again fund raising efforts are in gear.

This year we have two Presidents - Jo Howell until

2016, then Susan Parry. Susan is heavily involved with

the Conference Committee as Co-ordinator – no time

to be President just now!

Looking forward to the Conference at Warrnambool in

October, developing new friendships, sharing ideas,

and show casing our beautiful part of the world.

Irymple President: Heather Pinyon

Our Changeover Dinner in July introduced incoming

President Heather Pinyon, who, for her first duty,

inducted three new members.

The annual Daffodil Day Breakfast in August resulted

in money raised distributed to Palliative care and the

Victorian Cancer Council.

The year ahead; visit from A60 Chairman, guest

speakers, craft workshop, Christmas celebrations,

Alstonville President: Julie Lee

Alstonville IW Club has begun the year with a great

spirit of fun and friendship. A “Soup and Sweets”

luncheon in July celebrated the anniversary of the first

moon landing in 1969. Table decorations, a “Space

Quiz”, and members relating the memory of what they

were doing on the day, entertained the members and

our four guests.

The August afternoon tea at President Julie’s home

was great fun. Outfits purchased from Op Shops for

minimal cost provided High Fashion in the Winter

Parade.

At the September luncheon, Patsy Lucas spoke about

the “Days for Girls” program in Africa – a worthy

recipient of a donation from us. Monthly coffee

mornings, and Working Bees producing mastectomy

cushions, ensures our club stays united in friendship

but is unique in character.

Ballina President: Norma Robbins

Our changeover in early July went smoothly with

Norma Robbins welcomed in as our new President. A

cheque for $500 was handed over to Ballina Marine

Rescue.

August meeting welcomed District Chairman, Marie

Keys, to a light luncheon at the Wharf Restaurant. We

then adjourned to the home of our Secretary, Helen

Payne, for our meeting, followed by coffee and cake.

A trip out of town to Pimlico was enjoyed by members

in September. We visited the home of member Jo-Ann

Hart (and husband Alan). Committee catered and it

was a great day.

Coffs Harbour President: Liesel Brown

We are absolutely delighted to have District Chairman

Marie attend our September meeting and present our

member Frances Blake with the Margarette Golding

Award. Frances was an inaugural member of our club

and our first Secretary. She has spent a lifetime

working for the community and was Citizen of the

Year 2014.

Forster-Tuncurry President: Lillian Parsons

Forster-Tuncurry club has had many social outings

since changeover. We all enjoy our coffee get together

at one of the many cafes available in our twin town.

President Lillian has inducted a new member Cynthia

Lockhart. Welcome Cynthia. With the new

membership rules it will be much easier to attract new

members.

Grafton President: Rose Covre

In early July our past President Shirley Grainger and

members where hosts to a very successful 80th District

Conference and Changeover meeting. Amongst our

special guests were past I.W. Aust. President Bev

Crowe and her husband Adrian. By numerous

comments made, guests truly enjoyed the warm

camaraderie and our beautiful Jacaranda City.

Currently we are actively planning for our traditional

Jacaranda Luncheon and the Club’s 20th Birthday

Celebrations.

Inverell President: Margaret Lenord

At our August meeting we invited Josephine Kelly

from Inverell Rotary Club to speak on the need for a

refuge for our homeless men. The two Inverell Rotary

Clubs, Inner Wheel and the Interact Club have been

encouraged to gather and confront the problems and

look for solutions. Any experience or wise suggestions

from any of our Inner Wheel ladies would be

appreciated.

Lismore President: Rosemary Davis

President Rosemary held a very successful afternoon

Tea at her home in August. It was a social and

financial success raising $313 for the Cancer Council.

We have welcomed Kal Junior

a small toy koala who belongs to

the Inner Wheel Club of

Kalgoorlie-Boulder in Western

Australia. Kal Junior is a very

well-travelled koala having

recently returned from the Inner

Wheel Club of Manchester, UK.

We will be hosting him for two

Changeover in July embraced the international theme

of ‘Unique and United’ with multicoloured handprints

on the tables to celebrate Joan Burrell taking over from

Ros Hall as President.

The local Women’s Refuge has been supported, a local

school project in Cambodia, as well as donating to

Tanna Island after the cyclone. Two garden seats were

purchased and installed at the children’s section of

Narrabri Lawn cemetery.

November will see members support a luncheon for

the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. We welcome our very

own Marie Keys on her Official visit next month.

Port Macquarie West President: Maria Collins

Mothers Day we gave beautiful Coat Hangers and

morning tea to some of the Residents of Wintergarden

Village.

We once again supplied sandwiches, slices and cakes

and drinks for the Survivors and Carers at Relay for

Life.

Stationary and school items were boxed and sent to

children of Tanna in Vanuatu after the devastation of

Cyclone Pam.

The Craft Group have been busy having supplied 92

bundles this year for the Premi Ward at the Base

hospital. They also supplied 6 special baby and mother

bundles for the babies born on Christmas Day.

Tamworth President: Kay Eather

Our Changeover night had the theme of "Happy New

Year" from President Narelle to incoming President

Kay. One meeting, members wore their special apron

and told its interesting story. One treasure was over

100 years old.

Member Jean downsized her lovely garden of beautiful

azaleas, geraniums, pots and statues, and this

combined with a well stocked trading table/white

elephant stall provided a wonderful day with proceeds

donated to a local school breakfast club.

Wee Waa President: Pat Verwey

Wee Waa continues to shine and contribute to its

community. Donations last year included $800 each to

the Cancer support group and Hospital Auxiliary and

also $1,200 to Cord Blood.

Opportunities continue to be created where members

can share friendship and fundraising.

Albury President: Heather Elliot

After a very successful year fund raising we were able

to donate to a variety of worthwhile causes. Riding for

the Disabled was again given a substantial amount plus

"Headspace" an organization that helps prevent young

people succumbing to suicide. It also helps for parents

to cope. Workers from both of these worthy causes

spoke at our May and June meetings when the cheques

were presented to them. Another recipient was the

women's refuge "Betty's Place."

Griffith East President: Helen Donaldson

The club social activity for August was the movie

“Last Cab to Darwin” which was enjoyed by all who

went.

A $100 donation was given to the Binya School P & C

for their school program. They are a small school of 15

families.

Leeton President: Lorraine McKellar

We celebrated our 58th birthday with a visit to the local

Yarrawonga Mulwala President: Bronwyn Lloyd

As we all head into the

new Inner Wheel year,

we can not only look

forward to some new

ideas, but can we look

forward to some better

weather? Our final

meeting in June gave

us an opportunity to enjoy guest Speaker, Glenys

Davis, Trustee and director of the Eva May foundation

which supports people in need in Myanmar. What an

inspiration Glenys is, the foundation supports four

rural areas with free education for children in great

need, the building of two villages providing housing

and water and much more.

Yenda President: Gwen Duff

Our club conducted a very successful High Tea in May

due to a wonderful response from the extended

community. Never were there so many silver teapots in

the Yenda Diggers Club!

Continuing to raise money

for the Cord Blood Research

project, we had a table with

merchandise at the Farm

Fair in Murrumbidgee, as

well as helping our Rotary

‘boys’ with their barbeque.

Baulkham Hills President: Yvonne Whyte

The Inner Wheel club of Baulkham Hills continues to

enjoy vibrant fellowship with interesting meetings and

fun filled activities.

We relish the opportunity to give back to society by

financially supporting charities and appeals such as

Stewart House, the Myanmar Eye Project and a local

Women’s refuge. We give practical assistance to

several groups such as Meals on Wheels and Western

Sydney Homeless Connect.

Beecroft President: Gloria Allison

A BBQ celebrated our Changeover at the Forsight

Foundation, and baby and wedding photos provided

the fun! Kirsty Fromholtz, a dance therapist from the

disabled – amazing.

Proceeds from a ‘Blue Illusion’ sale will support an

Early Intervention Program at Narara Public

School. Coin for Cord with Pat Walters, a champion

“bucket jangler” at Beecroft Railway Station.

Two sad events – the passing of member and dear

friend Jean Morton, and the destruction on Tanna

Island, Vanuatu, when the Jump Start Foundation

suffered damage from cyclone Pam, and fires.

Blacktown City President: Rhonda Bensley

We are busy with Craft Days making Christmas hats

from recycled Christmas Cards for the Senior’s

Christmas Party with 350 residents from Aged Care

facilities. Christmas wrapping is also on the agenda -

our biggest fundraiser.

Campsie President: Joan Brown

Campsie members enjoyed a lovely Changeover with

“A Touch of Austria” and embraced the IIW theme of

“Unique and United”. We intend to have a good year

and among other ideas will be organizing a Mother’s

Day Raffle of a beautiful Quilt, hand-sewn and donated

by our Secretary June’s talented daughter, Carolyn.

Kenthurst President: Maggie Dutton

Our 37th Changeover was a great success with a Citrus

theme as our area produces citrus. Donations throughout

the year have been given to Fred Hollows Foundation,

Kenthurst RFS, Royal Flying Doctor Service and

Taldumande Youth Services.

September the Orange

Blossom Festival

brought Kenthurst

residents to Rotary

Park. Inner Wheel

ladies worked hard on

the Preloved Goods

Stall.

Monthly meetings and

luncheons enjoyed by

all, as are our Bus

trips.

Liverpool Combined President: Judith Banks

Our Changeover was well attended by members,

District and friends. Nice to have support for our small

club.

In August we had a lovely tour of ‘Camelot’ at

Kirkham, a house fully restored to former glory. It also

has a lovely garden. It is used for making the TV series

‘A Place to Call Home’.

Members attended the District A.G.M, and the Getting

to Know You morning Tea. Judith and Laurel are going

to the IWA Conference in Warrnambool. Have a good

time girls. Lots of outings planned and also fund raising

events.

Nepean President: Robyn Portelli

This year a joint changeover was held for the first time

for the Inner Wheel and Rotary clubs of Nepean.

Robyn and Frank Portelli were the incoming Presidents

for their respective clubs. It was a sparkling winter

afternoon and everyone enjoyed a sumptuous “High

Tea” at Mulgoa Valley Receptions.

Thanks to Merilyn

Beach for the most

generous donation of

a ring for our major

fundraising raffle.

Funds raised enabled

us to continue our

World Vision sponsorship of a young girl in

Zimbabwe and also to donate funds to a number of

very different charities.

Norwest President: Dallas Bendt

Changeover for Norwest Inner Wheel took place on

July 18th. It was a great evening at the Castle Hill

RSL to welcome Dallas Bendt, our new President

for 2015-2016.

New member Deb Pike was inducted in September,

the same evening as our guest speaker Carol

Leaver, A53 District Chairman visited.

Parramatta President: Caroline Flynn

Glasses of bubbly and finger food at our 67th ‘Ladies

only’ Changeover Luncheon. A stall for Coin for A

Cord Day and a table of merchandise at the three

day Eastwood Patchwork Quilters Exhibition. At

TAD Disability Services we witnessed a child’s

delight on receiving a special ‘Freedom Wheel’

bike. Again we will pack Christmas gift boxes at

Samaritans Purse.

Exhibition of Historical Wedding Gowns worn on

stage, screen and television at Old Government

House Parramatta was followed by lunch at

Lachlan’s Restaurant. We viewed a spring/summer

collection at our Spring Fashion Parade, held at Blue

Illusion Hornsby.

Penrith President: Jean Cook

We have had a good year with guest speakers such

as a spokesperson from the NRMA with driving tips

for seniors, an excursion to a local winery, “The Big

Morning Tea” and a meeting where members were

to bring and talk about something connected with

their mother. There were lots of interesting

memories. Lots more on the agenda.

Ryde President: Julie Thorp

Ryde Club is small in numbers but vibrant and

enthusiastic.

We meet in members’

homes, enjoying

f r i e n d s h i p a n d

fellowship and very

i n t e r e s t i n g a n d

informative speakers.

Members Shirley, Elizabeth,

We continue to raise money for our local and

International Charities such as Parkinson’s Disease

Research, Cord Blood, Taldumanda Youth Service

and High Himalayan Hospital. We warmly welcome

new members into our ranks and look forward to

increasing our numbers.

Smithfield President: Susan H. Lumley

President Sue has plans in hand for outings to see the

“Exhibition of Bridal Fashions” at Old Government

House, Parramatta, and in October our ladies are

going to lunch at the Little Snail Restaurant in

Darling Harbour.

Club members will also attend one of the School

Spectacular Concerts, at the Entertainment Centre, to

support students from the Les Powell School, a

school for profoundly disabled children, who have

been chosen to present an item at this concert, a great

effort!

The Hawkesbury President: Ida Harris

The Hawkesbury Ladies have been very busy with

Coin for Cord Blood and Changeover with new

President Ida at the helm. Lots of ideas for fun,

friendship and food always involved. Raising funds

through our community involvement with cocktail

parties, trivia nights, fashion parades, Christmas

Carols in The Park and BBQ catering at Rotary

markets.

The Hills President: Maralyne Skeggs

In July, President Elect Maralyne, hosted a delightful

Club Changeover at the Riverside Oaks Golf Club at

Cattai. With a theme of pink and a room decorated in

beautiful roses, members enjoyed a delicious

luncheon, thanked the outgoing and welcomed the

new Committee.

In August the Club held a

High Tea at the Hills

Lodge to farewell long

standing member, Yolanda

Seach. More fun and

laughter was heard in

September when the Club held a fund raising Crazy

Whist night. All of these events were memorable for

their fun, laughter and friendship.

West Harbour President: Lucile Clarke

Our Changeover theme this year was Scandinavian,

held at Marlene’s home, with District Chairman

Carole Leaver, and members of her committee

attending. Our special guest from Bear Cottage,

Nadia was presented with a cheque from our fund

raising Garden Party luncheon.

This year we will be happily raising funds for both

our President’s Charity and that of District Chairman

Carol.

Gosford North President: Kath McGrath

Combining with other organisations we have made

over 100 kits for DFGs and plan an indoor Garden

Party to fundraise for the cause. We welcomed our

newest member, Senanie de Silva to our club.

Sewing and crafty

members continue to

create beautiful items

for the forthcoming

Christmas markets.

Members and friends

travelled to Sydney to

view the Archibald

Prize paintings and The Powerhouse exhibit of

‘Undressed Underwear of Yesteryears’ – this caused

a giggle or two.

Scone President: Dianne Chad

Members have been very active in Inner Wheel and in

roles within the wider community over many years,

and continue to support local organisations such as

the Scouts, Scone Anglican Church community,

Counsellor with the Australian Breastfeeding

Association, Probus, the hospital, CWA and Aged

Care Facility.

Our club has been featured in

the local paper with a number

of articles including, ‘Ladies

Make a Difference’ focusing

on Cord Blood.

Mary Woodland, a member

for 30 years, decided on a sea

change, so sadly we said

goodbye.

We always enjoy our combined Change Over with the

local Rotary Club.

Terrigal President: Joan Davis

Meetings continue to have very interesting guest

speakers, whether it be our own members talking on a

special object they own, or a local Historian, or a

local lady giving an informative introduction to Italy.

Our sewers are busy producing ‘clothing protectors’

for the local hospital.

In August we lost a dear friend and member Jan

Tomlin – she will be sadly missed.

Fund raising events include a manicure and nail day at

TAFE, and a September Springtime Fashion Parade

with friendship and afternoon tea all in the ‘high’

category.

Wyong President: Robyn Herzog

Three members enjoyed the IIW Convention in

Copenhagen. We continue to support a child’s

education in Nepal as well as

helping with the earthquake

appeal in that country.

The Wyong Neighbourhood

Centre has received more knitted

rugs from us.

Other agencies to receive sup-

port from us are the Children’s

Medical Research Institute,

through ‘Jeans for Genes’ day,

the Lake Haven Recreation Club,

as well as other local charities.

Member Susan Chisholm has the club support behind

her during her year as District Chairman and we are

sure she will have a very successful year.

Balmain President: Sallee Robinson

Our 24th Changeover at Haldon House Function

Centre, Lakemba on July 12th, from outgoing

President Ursula D'ibiasi to incoming President Sallee

Robinson was a lovely occasion with good food and

plenty of it.

A new member, Sandy Guy was inducted. Cheques to

recipients of our fundraising efforts were presented.

On 13th August a few members were invited to the

130th Anniversary of Balmain Hospital which is one

of our charities.

Belrose President: Jennifer Furness

Many of our club members are travelling at present -

all are enjoying great weather and doing so much.

Our yearly Inter-District reunion lunch with A52

Wyong was a special day. Smooth crossing from

Palm Beach. A51’s Northern Beaches club joined us

and everyone had a great time. Some were saying that

we should do it every 6 months.

Our Bunnings BBQ is scheduled for December and

plans have begun for IWA’s Conference in

Warringah in October 2016. Everyone is welcome to

join us in Warringah - a wonderful part of the East

Coast of Australia.

Bomaderry President: Elva Johnson

Our club will hold a garden party in October in

memory of Colleen Timbs, who died in July.

Proceeds going towards cancer research. We’ll miss

Colleen’s friendship, caring nature, bubbly

personality. Her scones, jam and cream were a legend

at all our social and fund-raising events.

At our August meeting we had 100% attendance – all

ten of our members were present, a first for many

years! Age is creeping up on all of us and the winter

weather is not to our advantage, but we continue to

enjoy the fellowship of Inner Wheel friends.

Camden President: Janice Newport

Lilla Patterson, a Charter

member of our Club and a lady

of distinction, was President in

2000-2001 and served as ISO

Officer. Now a sprightly 99

Lilla is leaving our Club after

27 years active service to move

c o - o r d i n a t o r ,

Bettie Small, was

interviewed by

Camden Rotary as

part of its program

‘Everyone has a

Story’. In her unique way, Bettie amused and

entertained the audience.

Campbelltown President: Diane Symonds

Our Club may be small, now reduced to 10 members,

but Friendship is strong and that is what it is all about

isn’t it? “Unique and United”.

North Sydney President: Joan Antarakis

Our club was formed on the 6th December 1932 – 83

years of friendship and service! Keeping our service

active is an achievement we aspire to and this has

been very difficult having experienced the death of

six active members within the past fifteen months.

At our changeover luncheon this year

our past International President

Gwen Bowman travelled down from

Elermore Vale to share the occasion

with us, it was

just wonderful.

We are currently looking at

ways we CAN achieve what is

possible for us to take on, how

we CAN seek new members.

Our difficulty is getting “out

there”, marketing our club, and

learning communication skills on the computer.

‘Unique & United’ we aim to succeed, with a hug and

a smile.

Northern Beaches President: Vivienne Anderson

Changeover in July was a relaxing, quiet lunch of 3

delicious soups. August a busy month with guest

speaker, Linda Edwards, Assistant Principal of the

Royal Far West School in Manly, where children

from Regional NSW visit for a week to be medically

and developmentally assessed.

We held a Fashion and Accessories Parade to raise

funds for the Dalwood Spilstead Services, an early

intervention centre for young children. Next day some

of our ladies helped the Rotary Club of Brookvale

with the Pub-to-Pub Fun Run selling raffle and bus

tickets.

Port Hacking President: Trish Woodford

After our August meeting we had a fun night with a

Beetles Game (you throw dice and, depending on

what number, you then draw a leg, body, antennae,

etc). There were some fantastic, ODD BEETLES,

plenty of fun and laughter!

Members from Port Hacking and Sutherland were on

the Committee for the Fashion Parade scheduled for

September. A big job, but a big

success – the amount raised goes

towards a Cord Blood Research

project. Since its inception in

2002, our members have been

couriers, transporting fresh cords

to the Blood Bank each morning.

(Well done Girls - Ed.)

Southern Highlands President: Lorraine McAlpine

A poem........

‘Southern Highlands Inner Wheelers

are ladies who ‘do’

Anything and everything for me and for you:

We sell tourists tickets to tiptoe through flowers;

Man Cord Blood stalls in sunshine or showers;

We cook, conserve, crochet and knit;

Propagate, paint, even plan whilst we sit;

We organise, supervise in so many ways;

Having fun together with rewarding days.’

Sydney Inner West President: Julie Yates

Italian visitor Antonella Ronarolo, Extension

Chairman, District 209 with 25 clubs, told us of a

special program involving the purchase of “Baby

Nests” for abandoned babies. The nests give the

mothers a safe place to leave their unwanted babies

otherwise left to die in rubbish dumps.

Our assistance with the Breakfast Program at Sydney’s

Cleveland Street Intensive Language School every

Friday morning continues to be a source of joy for all!

Porridge, toasted cheese sandwiches and Milo prove

very popular with the students who queue with smiles

and thanks. Five loaves of bread, a huge pot of

porridge with extras and litres of milk are needed to

feed the hungry students. So good to see their happy

faces.

Wollongong President: Heather Jenkins

A number of members were recently invited to a party

to celebrate the 100th birthday of former member,

Reay Porter - a member for many years.

Irene Treble with

President Joan.

Lunch with lovely red

roses.

Also among the guests was another former member

Peg Smith, who has just celebrated her 101st birthday.

A lovely afternoon with over l00 guests and

entertainment provided by a Scottish piper.

Some members attended an art exhibition held by the

local Autism Spectrum. We have been supporting them

for some years now and it is wonderful to see what

they are achieving.

One of the outings planned is a train trip to Sydney.

This trip will include our husbands who are always on

hand to help with sausage sizzles and catering for the

Antique Fair.

Bernice Eshman, our Club Correspondent says “now

that I have my pacemaker, I don't plan to miss out on

anything!”

Bathurst President: Christine Mahony

Changeover was celebrated with a lovely lunch when

President Chris outlined a number of forthcoming

events. October was our annual Bring and Buy meeting

to fundraise for the District Project – Daniel, a student

at the School of St Jude, Tanzania.

Hosting the District Christmas

meeting, we plan to delight IWA

President Kay with a wonderful

day.

Plans well underway for

Melbourne Cup Day following on

last year’s success – fine food,

fine hats and lots of fun.

Blayney President: Lucy Needham

Blayney President Lucy’s mission is to increase

membership. With the induction of two at Changeover

and another underway a good start has been made.

Africa was the theme

for International day,

with a giraffe to greet

guests, displays of

African violets, photos,

souvenirs, accompanied

by appropriate food, it

was truly an “out of

Africa” event.

Cowra President: Diane Walsh

Cowra Club continues to have interesting guest

speakers on topics such as the history of Cowra and

life in South Korea.

We donated 12 Cord Blood

Bears to the Maternity Unit

at Cowra Hospital.

PP Mandy Howard dressed

in her Mother of the Bride

Singapore-styled outfit and

gave members an insight

into the lovely wedding of

her daughter.

Dubbo President: Melva Blake

District A50 and IWC of Dubbo combined their

changeovers at the Taronga Western Plains Zoo,

with members from all

clubs in the District in

attendance. Meryl Usback

was inducted as District

Chairman and Melva

Blake as President of

IWC of Dubbo. Four new

members were also

inducted.

S u c c e s s f u l d i n n e r

meetings with delicious

home cooked meals continue. District Chairman

Meryl gave an inspirational address on her visit.

President Melva has lots of interesting trips and

events planned. Monthly morning teas at cafes

around town are popular, as is our trading table at

meetings.

Lithgow President: Marilyn Tulley

It was a pleasure to induct a new member, Janette

Phillips, at our 56th Changeover in July. Members

continue to knit knee rugs for our Aged Care homes

and Trauma Teddies for

the Hospital.

We will hold a

Christmas Hamper

Raffle in November to

raise funds for our local

community. Monthly

coffee mornings are

enjoyed by all.

Oberon President: Melita Braun

of our major fund

raisers.

Orange President: Patricia Cuming

A busy and productive

year for IWC of Orange

saw a Garden Party to

raise funds for the

B a r b a r a M a y

Foundation – perfect

weather and great stalls

helped the cause

immensely.

A biggest Morning Tea was also well supported.

Mother’s Day was celebrated at Ex Services Club

where we shared memorabilia and photographs of our

Mothers.

Changeover was celebrated with a High Tea with

members providing a beautiful display of china and

silverware.

Orange Minhi President: Alison Broughton

A busy few months of fundraising - two movie nights

to raise funds for a local lady from Orange who has

MS and is having treatment in Russia, Barbara

Parkins Foundation in Africa, and a local cat rescue

organisation called ‘Blossoms’. A Trivia Night in

June to help a local girl with a genetic condition, who

is being schooled at home. The funds raised enabled

equipment to be purchased for

her.

We held our Changeover on 7

August 2015, which was a fun

night with guests from IW

Clubs including Orange,

Bathurst, Blayney, and Dubbo.

We had four new members

inducted on the night.

Albany President: Kaye Bolger

including: Girls Weekend Away, Sausage Sizzles, Soup

and Craft Nights, Movie Nights, High Tea, Mothers

Day Remembrance Event, Guest Speakers, Friendship

We had a request from Parkerville Children’s home

for Easter Eggs. We all rallied to the call and took lots

of them up there.

We celebrated our 50th Birthday on the 30th August

with a lunch at The Lesmurdie Club in Walliston.

Most WA clubs

were represented,

some bringing

gifts. We were

honoured by the

presence of IWA

President Kay Morland

who presented our

President Dorothy with

a new collar ribbon as

is the custom.

Kalgoorlie-Boulder President: Diana Williams

A tour of our new Emergency Department in June

enabled us to view the wall games we purchased as

our President's Project for the past year.

We ended our year with our usual High Tea which

was a fabulous way to spend a cold afternoon at

Charter Member Chris's home. A40 Chairman Tish

and husband Neil Darch attended our changeover on

25th July, and we inducted our 3rd new member in 12

months, Denise, on the night.

wish Beverley a warm, rewarding and happy year.

Mandurah President: Jean L’Estrange

Our Club dinner meetings are held at the Mandurah

Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club (MOFSC), and

are a pleasing combination of business, interesting

speakers, social activity and supporting the chosen

charities. Regular morning teas are enjoyed between

meetings, and this year our Christmas function will

be a performance of "A Medieval Romp"!!

Shortly we are promoting our Club to the Mandurah

Ac-cent members at one of their Community Cafe

mornings.

Members enjoyed a pleasant changeover with a

difference this year. We held an evening with

Girls, Flood relief in Nepal,

an Ethiopian Charity, and

plan to provide ongoing

assistance to a local

Women’s refuge, having

already donated blankets.

Swan Valley President: Lorraine Reed

Our International night was held at our Presidents

home in April. The theme for the night was Italian,

with foods including antipasto, lasagnes, pizzas, and

concluded with tiramisu, cassata and coffee. The

evening was a great hit, lots of fellowship and laughter

as we supported our

District International

of fellowship and shopping, despite the heavy rain as

we had lunch together then returned to the Swan
