For decades, the name Baypren® has been synonymous with high-performance chloroprene rubber (Cr).

LANXESS is one of the leading manufacturers of chloroprene rubbers worldwide. Baypren® is a premium versatile elastomer with a unique combination of high flexibility, dynamic load-bearing capacity and resistance to both chemicals and weath-ering. This makes it the material of choice for a multitude of rubber applications, so it’s hardly surprising that Baypren® is found in a whole host of different rubber products.

Synthetic rubber is an integral part of the LANXESS portfolio. The specialty chemicals company is committed to ongoing investment in process technology and product innovation so as to match the Baypren® portfolio as closely as possible to its customers’ needs. Our technical service with well-equipped laboratories provides customers across the globe with reliable support.

Following many years of research and development work on chloroprene rubber, two new Baypren® products lines are now being launched:

Baypren® high Performance (hP) and Baypren® green Finishing (gF).

Off to new shores in CR - the new products meet high requirements for tough applications such as powerful inflatable motorboats

The High Performance products – Baypren® HP M010 VP and Baypren® HP M210 VP – provide particularly low Mooney viscosities that are unprecedented on a production scale.

The advantages of low viscosity lie in longer flow paths during injection molding and lower energy consumption during mixing and extrusion. This is helpful during processing and for optimizing injection molding and extrusion.

It also makes LANXESS the first rubber manufacturer to respond to the industry’s demand for polychloropene grades with enhanced flow properties.

The lower viscosity delivers key processing benefits: Better flowability Higher throughput Reduced die swell Lower energy consumption for extrusion Less ‘nerve’ Suitable for compounding with CR of a higher viscosity Low scorching tendency Adjustable crosslinking Reduced marching modulus

Mechanical properties such as stress-strain behavior and hardness remain excellent despite the lower viscosity, making the products ideal for use in cables, hoses and profiles.

Product variants are available with slow or medium crystalliza-tion rates to suit the relevant temperature range. Optimized variants have also been developed for MTT crosslinking, but all grades can also be vulcanized with established crosslinking systems such as ETU.

Fast vulcanization combined with low-viscosity Baypren® HP has two big advantages – easy processing and optimized crosslinking.

As an international specialty chemicals group, we bear a major responsibility toward people and the environ-ment. safety, environmental protection and quality are key components of our strategy at LANXESS. The inno-vative production process we have developed reflects this commitment, using less water, no natural gas for drying and no ammonia, a coolant that is harmful to the environment. This also conserves resources.

Vulcanization accelerators are needed to vulcanize rubber. One feature of the new Baypren® GF products is their optimized crosslinking with N-methyl-thiazolidine-2-thione (MTT), a vulcanization accelerator that poses no handling risks. This speeds up the crosslinking process and makes it easy to control. It also opens up new possibilities – especially in applications such as cables and foams, where rapid vulcanization is vital.

Further properties: Various viscosity ranges Slow and medium crystallization rates Mercaptan (M)- and xanthogen disulfide (XD)-modified grades Optimized crosslinking characteristics with MTT Faster MTT crosslinking Adjustable crosslinking options Reduced marching modulus

The new Baypren® GF products are still modified using mercaptan or xanthogen disulfide. The Green Finishing products in the xan-thogen disulfide series exhibit very good properties, with superior strength, tear propagation resistance and fillability as the mercap-tan grades.

Baypren® high Performance (hP) and Baypren® green Finishing (gF) Production of these grades will commence early in 2014, marking the start of a new product generation. Low-viscosity and

MTT-optimized Baypren® grades are the first members of a new product family that will expand in the future. The products described here are already available in sample quantities of up to 100 kg.

The specified Mooney ranges and limits will be defined more precisely after the start of production.
