Why Flexibility?

7

The entire electric system needs to be more flexible to accommodate 100% carbon-free electricity, enabling a system in which load can follow variable generation

Innovations and programs to promote adoption and grid interconnection of renewable energy, energy efficiency, and energy storage, among others, are critical to achieve the Climate Act

At the same time, the biggest sources of carbon – transportation and buildings –must electrify, adding new load to the electric system

Technology adoption Increased electrification

Ambitious Climate Act goals can be addressed by maximizing grid and end-use flexibility to balance a system with intermittent supply

REV Connect Innovation Priorities

REV Connect refreshed and ranked Innovation Opportunities highlighting energy innovation needs for New York State, prioritizing Grid-Edge Flexibility and Accelerating the Gas Transition

The need for innovative solutions that will help maximize grid and end-use (“Grid-Interactive”) flexibility, i.e., load control and optimization, to balance the system at a 70% renewables generation mix by 2030.

Grid-Edge Flexibility

The need for innovative solutions that will help New York State decarbonize a large portion of its thermal load that is currently met with fossil fuels as it transitions to a low-carbon future.

Accelerating the Gas Transition

Collaboration Is Key

9

Ambitious goals in New York State, as laid out in the Climate Act, present a challenge for all stakeholders in the energy ecosystem

Reaching Climate Act and other goals requires innovation today to scale tomorrow. NYS recognizes this and encourages energy innovation through several channels, including REV Connect

REV Connect provides a space for all stakeholders in the energy ecosystem to innovate, share, and learn in support of meeting energy-related targets. When we work together and support each other, we can achieve these ambitious goals

NYS supports utilities and the market in using REV Connect as a resource to advance the priority area of innovation discussed today

Utilities, the market, NYSERDA, and DPS can collaborate to seek out innovative ways to improve grid-edge flexibility

Impact through REV Connect

15

To ensure projects submitted through REV Connect make meaningful impact towards Climate Act targets, we ask you to estimate that impact in your submission.

Pilot vs. ScaleWe anticipate that many solutions may be implemented first as a demo or pilot before expanding. We are interested in how large an indicative pilot would be, and how large a realistic program at scale in the utility’s service territory would be

Funding amountWhile an exact budget is not required, we ask you to provide an estimate of funding you are seeking for the proposed project and what you are willing to contribute.

We want to understand the size and scale of your idea, as counted by customers, subscriptions, units sold, or units installedWe also want to know the value provided by your solution; for example, reduction of demand charges (MW per customer), energy savings (MWh saved per customer), renewable energy generation (MWh generated) etc.

You can also share impact to society and customers, such as avoided tons CO2e, customer energy savings, etc.

Meet the people on the REV Connect facilitation team

Take action and submit your idea by March 10 at 8 pm ET.• What happens next? If your submission meets the facilitation criteria, you will be eligible to have a qualification

consultation call with a member of the REV Connect team. We will present the New York utilities and State energy agencies with qualified ideas based on consultation conversations.

• Can I make more than one submission? Yes! There is no limit on the number of submissions a single company or individual can make. Each idea or business model concept should be submitted separately.

• Is it possible to work with REV Connect to modify an application after its submission? Yes! Our industry experts can help to refine parts of the submission, such as impact metrics and project budgets, before sharing with utilities.

• What happens if I don’t meet criteria for facilitation or no utility is interested? If it is determined that the submission does not qualify for consultation, a REV Connect team member will notify the provided contact and offer the opportunity to resubmit.

• What if I don’t know how to estimate the impact of my solution? We are looking for submitters to demonstrate some understanding of the market rather than exact values. Submitters will not be held to the numbers and will have the opportunity to review and refine them with REV Connect facilitators.

• What if my idea is not related to this Sprint topic or I miss the deadline? REV Connect accepts submissions related to any Innovation Opportunities on a rolling basis. If you miss the deadline for a Sprint, you may still submit and get many of the benefits of REV Connect participation, but you will miss out on Sprint-specific opportunities, such as the virtual workshop.
