About the University

About Indian Society of Mycology and Plant Pathology

Growth of horticulture sector has been one of the driving forces of overall agricultural development in India. At present, the sector has, perhaps, become the most profitable venture of all farming activities, as it provides ample employment opportunities and scope to raise the income of the farming community in the country.

Karnataka produces about 17.80 MT of horticulture produce from an area of 1.87 million ha, accounting for 7.40% of horticultural production of the country. In the state, major share of production comes from vegetables, fruits, and plantation crops with 50.88%, 35.25%, and 10.07%, respectively. Although the sector accounts for only 15% of total net area sown, its contribution to gross value of output in the sector was around 40%. The state is identified as the largest producer of spices, and aromatic and medicinal crops in the country. Looking to the huge scope of horticulture sector in the state, the University of Horticultural Sciences at Bagalkot was

ndestablished by Government of Karnataka on 22 November, 2008 with the aim of supporting the sustainable horticultural production and commercialization of horticulture sector in the state.

The growth of the University in a span of ten years has been phenomenal in teaching, research and extension. The University has nine constituent colleges, 11 Horticultural Research and Extension Centres (HRECs) covering 23 districts of Karnataka to meet the immediate demand of students and farmers.

College of Horticulture, Bagalkot offers Post Graduate programme in different disciplines. The horticultural crops in the region are experiencing the most debilitating diseases like bacterial blight and wilt in pomegranate, ring spot in papaya, early blight, late blight, leaf curl in tomato, and viral disease complex in chilli etc. Keeping these in context, the Department of Plant Pathology is offering both master's and doctoral degree programmes and focusing basic and applied research on the above mentioned pertinent diseases of horticultural crops.

Indian Society of Mycology and Plant Pathology is a very prestigious society in the country borne as brain child of many aspiring plant pathologists who were inspired by doyens such as Dr. N. Prasada and Dr. R. Prasada. The society was originally started by the initiation of Dr. Prasada at SKN College of Agriculture, Jobner, Rajasthan during December, 1969 and later the society head quarter was relocated to Udaipur during 1970. During the formative stage of the Society, academician and industrialist Late Shri P P Singhal, Founder of Pesticides India, Udaipur helped generously in various ways. He was the founder "Patron" of the society and started an annual prestigious award "PP Singhal Memorial PI Industries Award". The society started its own journal in the name of “Indian Journal of Mycology and Plant Pathology” under leadership of Dr N Prasada as chief editor during December,1971.

The society has also started publication of ISMPP News from the year 1995. Dr Y L Nene had been the Founder Editor of the News. The society endeavoured for a new and unusual venture of taking the responsibility of beginning the publishing of Annual Review of Plant Pathology from year 2002. The other activities of the Society include organizing Annual Conferences. The Society has sponsored in all 40 Annual Conferences till date covering almost all the states of India.

In order to recognize, the work done in field of Mycology in particular and Plant Pathology in general, society has started giving awards annually to distinguished scientists across the country who have made significant contribution. The various awards of the society are as listed below. include Y L Nene Outstanding Plant Pathology Teacher Award, Prof H C Dube Outstanding Young scientist Award, Prof K S Bilgrami Best Poster Presentation Award, Smt Guman Devi Verma Memorial Best Women Scientist Award, Dr. P R Verma Award for M Sc & Ph D students, Prof. S S Chahal Life Time Achievement award and Dr R Prasada Memorial Award for the Best Paper Published in JMPP. Further, society is also awarding the scientists who made notable contribution as Fellows of the society.

Healthy plants constitute the foundation for all life on earth, making up the oxygen we breathe and over 80% of the food for the human and animal consumption. Sustaining plant health protects the environment, biodiversity and livelihoods enhances food security, addresses the effects of climate change, boosts economic development and supports efforts to end hunger, malnutrition and poverty.

Plant health is of global importance for sustainable and competitive agriculture as well as for the protection of biodiversity and ecosystem. The most conspicuous and direct effect of plant diseases on agriculture as whole are loss or the reduced efficiency of production and cost associated with management of diseases. The trans boundary movements of diseases with plants have made remarkable negative impact on global food security, trade and other international relations.

It is estimated that, about 50% of the food production needs to be increased globally by 2050 to meet the ever-increasing population. Currently, around quarter of worlds crops are lost due to pest and diseases alone in crop production. In order to meet out the increased demand for food, shelter and clothes, protection of plant through improved means of managing diseases is paramount importance as the horizontal expansion of production is almost impossible. Hence, keeping in view of all factors, in order to focus the new research findings and also to find out way forward for

stmitigating the losses due to diseases in plants, it is proposed to conduct 41 annual meeting of ISMPP, Udaipur for the year 2019-20 and national e- symposium on during 28-30 January, 2021 at University of Horticultural Sciences, Bagalkot.
