4 Wireless Technologies

BluetoothBluetooth was designed as a short-range wireless cable replacement for mobile phones. It quickly was adopted as a common solution for industrial applications as well. Bluetooth provide a wide variety of profi les to transfer data between devices.

Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) was added with version 4.0 of the standard. It is especially designed for low power consump-tion. This enables new markets such as wearables and health devices.

WiFiAlso known as W-LAN, WiFi is designed as wireless replace-ment for ethernet local area networks. Based on the IEEE 802.11 standards, it allows easy networking with multiple devices.

Although WiFi is mainly known for its use in computer net-working. Industrial applications also use this technology to connect embedded devices.

ISM Band / Short Range RadioProprietary Solutions and Mesh NetworkingRadio communication using ISM band frequencies adds a lot of flexibility for wireless connectivity of your application. The radio parameters and protocols can be tailored to your spe-cifi c requirements.

Different frequency bands are available for local, regional and even worldwide operation. You can use proprietary solutions or select an industry standard protocol as needed.

Industry standard protocols like ZigBee or Thread enable easy connection of multiple devices in a mesh network. Both pro-tocols use the 2.4 GHz frequency band, allowing worldwide deployments. Other protocols or proprietary solutions use Sub-GHz frequency bands, which can often provide better range and coverage.

Wireless Gecko SoCFlexible SoC for Multiprotocol WirelessEFR32 Wireless Gecko SoCs provide enough memory and offer features including over-the-air software updates to support application enhancements and evolving protocol needs in the fi eld. With SILICON LABS’ multiprotocol software and hardware you can design a single product that supports multiple wireless connectivity protocols. This can be the same device that is capable of connectivity to multiple protocols in the fi eld or a device that can be confi gured in the fi eld or factory to one of a number of different wireless protocols. By using the same SoC that supports multiple protocols, or pin compatible SoCs for specifi c protocols, you have fl exibility in your go-to-market approach. With a secure update mechanism you are also in a position to update devices in the fi eld to add additional functionality or to react to any changes in the market such as surge in popularity of a specifi c ecosystem that requires a specifi c mesh technology.

Maintaining fl exibility with multiprotocol wireless connectivity

Multiprotocol wireless connectivity can deliver a better consumer experience, enable designs to service multiple regions, and support fi eld upgrades to meet evolving market needs. Take advan-tage of a multiprotocol software and wireless SoCs with an integrated ARM Cortex-M4 MCU to introduce Bluetooth Low Energy technology (BLE), ZigBee, Thread, and proprietary wireless con-nectivity to get to production faster.

Programmable multiprotocol

A device platform that can support different radio protocols can be used for a programmable mul-tiprotocol solution. You can quickly address different markets with a single streamlined hardware design by programming the required protocol software during production. Depending on the mar-ket, ZigBee, Thread, Bluetooth Low Energy or proprietary protocols can be supported.

Switched multiprotocol

With switched multiprotocol, a bootloader can change the fi rmware for devices already deployed in the fi eld. For example, a device can be easily setup by using a smartphone and Bluetooth Low Energy. Then, the device can switch to another protocol like ZigBee or Thread to connect with other devices.With Over-the-Air (OTA) updates, devices can also evolve with changing market needs.

Dynamic multiprotocol

Ultimately, a multiprotocol solution might run multiple wireless protocols simultaneously. By using time slicing, access to the radio is shared. This opens even more use cases, especially when combining Bluetooth Low Energy with other wireless protocols.

EFR32™ Flex Gecko Proprietary Wireless SoCThe Flex Gecko family of wireless solutions combines an energy-friendly MCU with a highly integrated radio transceiver supporting 2.4 GHz and Sub-GHz proprietary wireless protocols. Flex Gecko SoCs are ideal for proprietary modulation schemes including OOK, shaped FSK, shaped OQPSK, DSSS modulation techniques and FEC. The single-die solution provides industry-leading energy effi ciency, ultra-fast wakeup times, a scalable power amplifi er, an integrated balun and no-compromise MCU features. Blue Gecko BGM11S / BGM121 / BGM123Bluetooth Low Energy SiP ModulesSILICON LABS Blue Gecko Bluetooth SiP Module integrate a Bluetooth Low Energy solution in a compact SiP package. They are targeted for applications where ultra-small size, reli-able high performance RF, low-power consumption and easy application development are key requirements. The SiP mod-ules are based on the Blue Gecko wireless SoC with Blue-tooth 4.2 compliant stack and can also run the end-user appli-cation. A high performance antenna is also integrated in the ultra-compact 6.5 × 6.5 × 1.4 mm SiP package.

The BGM11S variant additionally has a metal shield enabling full modular certifi cation for worldwide regulatory compliance.

Blue Gecko BGM111 / BGM 113Bluetooth Low Energy ModulesThe BGM111 and BGM113 are fully integrated, certifi ed Blue-tooth Low Energy modules ideally suited for low-power, short-range wireless applications. They combine a 2.4 GHz Blue Gecko wireless SoC and high effi ciency chip antenna on a compact module. This minimizes the time and effort typically required for complex RF designs.

BGM113 is footprint-compatible with the popular BLE113 module, opening a migration path to an ARM Cortex M4 Blue-tooth platform with higher processing power and lower power consumption.

Bluegiga Bluetooth Low Energy ModulesBluegiga BLE series modules provide Bluetooth Low Energy connectivity in a compact, fully inte-grated module. They include all RF components and a chip antenna to enable easy integration. The Bluetooth stack software supports standard GATT based profi les. Designed for low power consumption, the modules can often be powered from a 3 V coin cell or a pair of AAA batteries.

Bluegiga BLE112 / BLE113 Bluetooth Smart ModulesThe BLE112 and BLE 113 are Bluetooth Smart modules tar-geted for low-power sensors and accessories. The modules can also host end-user applications eliminating the need for an external microcontroller in size or price constrained devices. Flexible hardware interfaces allow connection to different peripherals. The module can be powered directly from a 3 V coin cell battery or a pair of AAA batteries. Low power modes enable current consumption as low as 500 nA in sleep mode and fast wake up within a few hundred microseconds.

The enhanced BLE113 is even smaller than the BLE112 and consumes approximately 30 % less power.

Bluegiga BLED112 Bluetooth Low Energy DongleThe BLED112 Bluetooth Low Energy Dongle integrates all Bluetooth LE features. The USB dongle has a virtual COM port that enables seamless host application development on Windows, Linux or Android devices using a simple application programming interface. The BLED112 can also be used for quickly prototyping new Bluetooth LE applications by utilizing the Profi le Toolkit™ and BGScript™ functions.

Bluegiga BLE121LR Bluetooth Smart Long Range ModuleBLE121LR is targeted for Bluetooth Smart applications where the best possible RF performance and range are required. At +8 dBm TX power and -98 dBm sensitivity BLE121LR has best-in-class RF performance and can provide Bluetooth Smart connectivity up to 450 meters.

The BLE121LR can also host end user applications, with fl ex-ible hardware interfaces to connect different peripherals and sensors. Although BLE121LR Bluetooth Smart Long Range Module is targeted for applications requiring high RF perfor-mance, it is still has relatively low power consumption and can be powered using a standard 3 V coin cell battery.

BT111 is compatible with Windows and Linux operating systems and Microsoft and BlueZ Bluetooth stacks and offers OEMs fast and risk free way to integrate Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity into their applications.

Wizard Gecko WGM110 WiFi® Module

The Easiest Path to Native IoT Connectivity

The Wizard Gecko WGM110 is an all-inclusive WiFi module targeted for applications where good RF performance, low power consumption and fast time to market are key require-ments. WGM110 has excellent RF performance and can pro-vide long range with robust wireless connectivity and security.

The WGM110 integrates all elements required by WiFi IoT including a 802.11b/g/n radio, integrated antenna, certifi ca-tions, a microcontroller, WiFi and IP stacks, an HTTP server and multiple protocols such as TCP and UDP. WGM110 can host BGScript end user applications or be run in Network Co-Processor mode together with an existing customer MCU.

The WGM110 module includes highly fl exible hardware inter-faces supporting various peripherals and sensors. In addition to the WiFi module itself, SILICON LABS offers the support to guide and help developers in using WGM110 to build IoT applications, with quick time to market.

Bluegiga WF121 WiFi® Module

The WiFi Module for IoT Applications

Bluegiga's WF121 is a stand-alone WiFi module providing fully integrated 2.4 GHz 802.11 b/g/n radio, TCP/IP stack and a 32-bit microcontroller (MCU) platform for embedded appli-cations requiring simple, low-cost and low-power wireless IP connectivity. It also provides fl exible peripheral interfaces such as SPI, I2C, ADC, GPIO and timers to connect various peripheral interfaces directly to the WF121 WiFi module.

The WF121 WiFi module also allows end-user applications to be embedded onto the on-board 32-bit MCU, using a simple BGScript™ scripting language and free-of-charge develop-ment tools. This eliminates need for and additional MCU and enables end users to develop smaller and lower cost WiFi devices. The WF121 can also be used in modem-like mode in applications where the external MCU is needed. The 802.11 access point and HTTP server functionality is also included for easy confi gurations and direct connections with phones, tablets, and PCs.

With an integrated 802.11 radio, antenna, single power sup-ply, and CE, FCC and IC regulatory certifi cations, the WF121 provides low-risk and fast time-to-market for applications requiring WiFi connectivity.

BlueGiga WF111 WiFi® Module

WiFi for Linux and Android Devices

The WF111 is a fully integrated single 2.4 GHz band 802.11 b/g/n module designed for portable and battery-powered appli-cations that need WiFi connectivity. The WF111 integrates an IEEE 802.11 b/g/n radio, antenna or U.FL antenna connector, and SDIO host interface. It provides a low cost and simple WiFi solution for devices that run an operating system and a TCP/IP stack on-board, but still offers the benefi ts of a module – small form factor, certifi cations, and easy integration.

SILICON LABS also offers WF111 drivers for the Linux and Android operating systems. The WF111 has hardware support for WiFi encryption protocols.

Zentri AMW006 / 036 / 106 / 136 WiFi® Modules

Ultra-low power WiFi networking module for battery powered applications

The AMW006/036/106/136 modules are ultra-low power WiFi networking module with full regulatory certifi cation. The mod-ule runs an embedded TCP/IP networking stack & webserver with RESTful API/websockets and SSL/TLS/HTTPS security.

The modules run ZentriOS, specifi cally designed for resource constrained IoT devices. ZentriOS accelerates time to market with a common software foundation. Abstracting the underly-ing complexity of connectivity, developers can focus on the core functions of their applications, building great products and accelerating time to market.

AMW106 and AMW136 feature a faster 100 MHz MCU, and 128 kB RAM allowing for more applications and WiFi services to run concurrently.

AMW 036 and AMW136 include a PCB antenna, simplifying RF integration.

AMW006-A1U and AMW006-A1W are fully certifi ed through-hole PCB-modules using the AMW006. They use the pseudo-standard pinout often used for 802.15.4 modules and feature dual U.FL connectors (AMW006-A1U) or dual wire antennas (AMW006-A1W).

Zentri AMW007 / AWM037 WiFi® ModulesThe AMW007 is a WiFi networking module complete with full regulatory certifi cation designed for low cost IoT edge devices. The modules use an 80 MHz microcontroller running the ZentriOS-Lite embedded OS, designed to enable fast product development. With dimensions of just 12 mm x 11 mm and a wide temperature range, the module is suitable for integration into most embedded applications.

AMW037 module also includes a PCB antenna, simplifying RF integration.

The modules have FCC & IC modular approval for use in the United States and Canada, CE approval for use in Europe and related approvals for use in other countries.

Mighty Gecko MGM12P Module for ZigBee and ThreadSILICON LABS’ Mighty Gecko MGM12P module integrates the EFR32MG12 Mighty Gecko SoC into a small form fac-tor module for ZigBee, Thread and Bluetooth low energy (LE) networks. With 1024 kB of Flash and 256 kB of RAM, this module is ideal for applications that require multiple protocols.

Modules enable the fastest time to market and are ideal for lower volume (< 100K) applications. The fully certifi ed modules integrate all components (crystals, RF passives and antenna) required for a system-level implementation of ZigBee, Thread and BLE networks. Telegesis ETRX Mesh Network ModulesTelegesis ETRX Series modules are based on the Ember EM series SoC. Using the EmberZNet PRO ZigBee protocol stack, they enable easy development of ZigBee applications.

Telegesis ETRX3587 Radio Modules The SILICON LABS Telegesis ETRX3587 is based on the EM358x ZigBee SoC family. The EM3587 chip is a single-chip, high-performance 2.4 GHz ZigBee transceiver and ARM Cortex-M3 processor integrated with the rigorously tested and fi eld-proven EmberZNet PRO ZigBee networking protocol stack. This ZigBee software sets the bar for ZigBee stack reli-ability and has been used in more announced products than any other ZigBee stack.

The ETRX3587 module is footprint compatible with the best-selling ETRX357 module but it brings signifi cant additional fl ash memory and RAM. With 512 K of Flash memory and 64 K of RAM this powerful product has more than enough capacity to deal with the most code intensive applications. The ETRX3587 has been designed to be integrated into any device without the need for RF experience and expertise and lets you add powerful ZigBee wireless networking capability to your products easily and bring them to market quickly. It can also be used by those developers who wish to use Thread technology in their solution.

Telegesis ETRX351 / 357 ZigBee® Radio ModulesThe ETRX3 series modules have a footprint of just 19 mm x 25 mm for both standard and PA/LNA versions which repre-sents a 40 % reduction in size compared to the ETRX2 mod-ule. They will be available with either an on board antennae or a Hirose U.FL connector to allow connection of external antennae. A link budget of 105 dB on the standard ETRX3 module gives excellent performance and RF power can be further boosted by use of the ETRX3-LRS which adds the new SiGe SE2432 front-end module containing both LNA+PA for highest possible link budget.

The ETRX3 series are low power 2.4 GHz ZigBee Radio modules integrating a 2.4 GHz, IEEE 802.15.4 compliant transceiver with up to 192k of fl ash, 12k of RAM, and many advanced peripherals. EZRadio® ISM Band Transmitters, Receivers and Transceivers

SILICON LABS’ EZRadio family of fully integrated, low-power, cost-effective wireless ICs is designed to meet the needs of OEMs developing ISM applications for the consumer, indus-trial and automotive markets. The EZRadio family are easy-to-use, low current, Sub-GHz ISM band transceivers, receivers and transmitters. Covering all major bands from 27 MHz to 960 MHz, it combines plug-and-play simplicity with the fl exibility needed to handle a wide variety of applications. Excellent sensitivity up to –116 dBm allows for a longer operating range, while the low current consumption of up to 12 mA active and up to 50 nA standby provides for superior battery life. By fully integrating all components from the antenna to the GPIO or SPI interface to the MCU, the EZRadio devices make realizing this performance in an application easy. The devices target one-way wireless link applications such as remote keyless entry (RKE), garage door openers, remote controls, home automation and security devices.

EZRadioPRO ISM Band Transmitters, Receivers and Transceivers

SILICON LABS’ EZRadioPRO devices are high-performance, low current transceivers covering the Sub-GHz frequency bands from 119–1050 MHz. The radios are part of the EZRadioPRO family which includes a complete line of transmitters, receivers and transceivers to cover a wide range of applications. EZRadioPRO offers outstanding sensitivity of up to –133 dBm while achieving extremely low active and standby current consumption. The devices exhibit excep-tional output power up to +20 dBm with its integrated on-chip PA, he active mode TX current consumption. Also included are built-in features such as wake-up timer, low battery detector, transmit and receive data FIFOs, power-on reset circuit and general-purpose digital I/Os.

Flex Gecko Wireless SoC for 2.4 GHz and dual bandThe EFR32 Flex Gecko family of wireless SoCs combines an energy-friendly MCU with a highly integrated radio transceiver supporting Sub-GHz and 2.4 GHz proprietary wireless protocols. The single-die solution provides industry-leading energy effi ciency, ultra-fast wakeup times, a scalable power amplifi er, and an integrated balun. The devices are supported with SDKs including an intuitive radio abstraction interface layer (RAIL) and connect stack to accelerate proprietary protocol development.

EZR32WG / HG / LG 32-bit Wireless MCUThe EZR32 series 32-bit Wireless MCUs deliver high-performance wireless solution integrated into a small form factor package. They provide the ultimate in fl exibility with a family of pin-com-patible parts that scale for different application requirements. Based on ARM Cortex-M0+, M3 or M4 cores and with fl ash memory from 32 up to 256 KB fl ash, you can easily select the SoC that fi ts best for your application. Various transceiver options and RF output power levels are avail-able as well as different interface options with or without USB.

The ultra low power operating modes and fast wake-up times of the SILICON LABS energy friendly ARM Cortex-based 32-bit MCUs, combined with the low standby, transmit and receive power consumption of the Sub-GHz radio, result in a wireless solution optimized for battery pow-ered applications.

Si10xx Sub-GHz Wireless MCUsSILICON LABS’ Si106x/8x Wireless MCUs combine high-performance wireless connectivity and ultra-low power microcontroller processing into a small 5 mm × 6 mm form factor. Support for major frequency bands in the 142 to 1050 MHz range is provided including an integrated advanced packet handling engine and the ability to realize a link budget of up to 146 dB. The devices have been optimized to minimize energy consumption for battery-backed applications by minimizing TX, RX, active, and sleep mode current as well as supporting fast wake-up times.

The Si106x Wireless MCUs are pin-compatible with the Si108x devices that can scale from 8 to 64 kB of fl ash and provides a robust set of analog and digital peripherals including an ADC, dual comparators, timers, and GPIO. All devices are designed to be compliant with the 802.15.4g smart metering standard and support worldwide regulatory standards including FCC, ETSI and ARIB.
