INNOVATION IN ROLLER-BASED LINEAR SYSTEMS

Page 4: Innovative Linear Bearings · sliders with only 2 screws. Order codes RACER RA18-3 Angular slider for 18mm rail, with one Floating roller and two guiding rollers. RP28-3 Floating

The complete modular linear system MODULARACE is

designed around double row precision ball-bearing rollers, with

high radial and axial load capacities, and raceways with a

protruding truncated cone-shape. The complete system has

hardened and honed raceways and a surface treatment for

high resistance to wear and corrosion. Thanks to the many

combination possibilities, a wide range of linear rails have been

developed within MODULARACE, to satisfy the demand for

strong reliable linear systems, for medium precision applications

and general automation.

Two rail designs and different size rails are available: The

MR-rail with internal raceways (RAILRACE) and the FXR-rail

with external raceways (FLEXRACE). They both have the

same protruding truncated cone raceway shape, but the

FLEXRACE has multi direction raceways.

The rails are all completely surface hardened. The innovative

hardening treatment also offers a standard high wear and

corrosion protection, assuring long life for the whole system.

The C-shaped cross section offers

well protected internal raceways and

provides compact overall dimensions.

The MR-rails are offered in 3 sizes

and all with 2 different fixhole systems

for the rail installation: MRL-rails for

cylindrical TORX head screws for

which the special screws are

supplied, see below screw

dimensions, or MRS-rails for standard

countersunk screw heads.

The screw pitch for all MR-rails is

80mm and a 40mm pitch for first and

last fixing hole.

THE RAILS:

The FXR-rails have a unique design as its rail offers three protruding

raceways, angled at 90° intervals. Providing an extremely versatile

linear system. The stronger FXR-rails have a 160mm hole pitch for

easy assembling.

The ROLLERACE rollers are designed around a double-row

precision ball bearing to guarantee both high radial and axial

load capacities. The rollers are protected by a double lip sealing

system (2RS) to assure long lifetime, even in difficult

environments. The integrated roller pivot has concentric or

eccentric shape, to allow for preload setting in the different

systems.

The rollers external ring comes with 2 slightly different profiles:

The Guiding-roller, assures system precision and load/moment

capacities in all directions, while the Floating-roller provides

limited lateral movement and minor rotation around its axis,

which allows for certain structural/assembling errors.

ROLLERS:

• The guiding roller is locked onto

raceways’ angled surfaces, for

precise slider guiding and ensuring

both radial and axial load

transmission.

Loading rollerGuiding roller

Guiding roller with eccentric pivot - REVGuiding roller with concentric pivot - RCV

Floating roller with concentric pivot - RCP Floating roller with eccentric pivot - REP

• The Floating roller touches only the raceways

central surface, due to wide central area of the

outer ring of the bearing. Hereby enabling only

radial load capacities. Thanks to this design,

the roller can move axially and rotate slightly

around its axis. As described further in the

TWINRACE part, the combination of Guiding

roller and Floating rollers in the TWINRACE

sliders offers a system which can absorb certain

structural/assembling misalignment errors.

SLIDERS:R

The sliders are available in three

sizes ( 18mm – 28mm – 43mm) with

3 or 5 rollers and each size in three

versions : Guiding (RV), Floating

(RP) and Rotating (RA);

The adjustable rollers are easily

identified, as the holes for the

eccentric pivot screw are clearly

visible on the slider’s body strap. The

non-adjustable (concentric) fixed

rollers, have all their central thread

totally covered by the slider body’s

black label.

Since the rollers are positioned

asymmetrically in the slider, the

correct slider orientation in the rails

is therefore important, to assure that

max. radial load is directed towards

the raceway with the highest number

of rollers.

The load direction is indicated by two

ingraved points.

The RACER (R) slider is equipped

with strong raceway wipers to keep

the raceways clear and smooth, while

lateral longitudinal seals assure good

overall dust protection.

The strong raceway wiper system,

incorporates greased sponges to

guarantee proper lubrication of

raceways for life, under clean

standard environment. (see page 44

for Maintenance).

For general use, it is

sufficient to fix the 3-roller

sliders with only 2 screws.

VERSATILE LINEAR SYSTEM:

This is a fully versatile system thanks

to the unique rails, which allow multi

radial-load directions. This system

is composed of one or more FXR-

rails, and ROLLERACE (R) rollers.

FLEXRACE is a Low-cost linear

precision system for fast and

easy assembly.

The many possible different rail-

combinations, solve a wide

variety of linear applications, as

shown below and on page 38-40. A

typical application example is for

moving doors and shields on

equipment.

10 11

Modular System‘s four product families

The MONORACE system is a rigid linear system, used with

one or two rails. The system is composed of MRL-MRS-rails

and RV guiding sliders, which use guiding rollers, type RCV-

REV.

Thanks to its optimized design, the Monorace system

guarantees load and moment capacities much higher than any

competitive product.

When used as a single rail, the system allows for loads and

moments in all directions.

When more than one rail is used, the rails must be well aligned

to assure smooth movement without binding.

STANDARD LINEAR SYSTEM:

SELF-ALIGNING TELESCOPIC RAILS:

The TWINRACE system is designed as a self-aligning linear

solution, capable of compensating for low accuracy mounting

surfaces or assembling errors. The system is composed of

two parallel MRL/S-rails and RA – RP-sliders. One rail

assembled with RA-sliders, assures precise movement, while

providing some slider rotation to compensate for horizontal

misalignment. The other rail mounted with RP-sliders, which

in addition to horizontal compensation; also compensates for

parallelism errors, as the slider allows for some lateral

movement, while maintaining its original preload.

A truly self-aligning system, which guarantees precise

straight-line movement, with no play, but with the benefit

of lower assembly cost.

SELF-ALIGNING LINEAR SYSTEM:

The TELERACE system is the world’s only telescopic rail system

for complete extension, based on precision rollers and hardened

raceways and with incorporate self-aligning feature (TLR series).

The system offers unique possibilities for all kinds of automation

applications, where smooth and precise telescopic movement is

required. Optimal movement with no play for High-Tech telescopic

applications, or for even heavy load and high frequency applications.

The TELERACE system is composed of exactly the same

precision components as the MONORACE and TWINRACE

system, except that the slider bodies are different, as longer

and with more rollers. All telescopic rails feature strong raceway

wipers and greasing system for low maintenance.

The TLR telescopic rails offer unique self-aligning capability, when

used in pair. As the right telescopic rail TLRD, allows the RA-like-

sliders to rotate in the lower rail-element, to compensate assembling

or surface misalignment errors, while maintaining the same precise,

preloaded extension.

To guarantee high load capacities and low deflexion, the TLR

telescopic rails are fixed to an intermediate S-shaped steel plate.

The TLQ telescopic rails have the MR-rails functioning as the

intermediate element, offering good radial and axial load capacities,

with very compact overall dimensions.

SELF-ALIGNING LINEAR SYSTEM

In most cases, when a pair of linear rails

are needed, the TWINRACE system

can be used with great advantages to

compensate for rail misalignment and

low accuracy of mounting surfaces,

thanks to the TWINRACE unique

features. The system is designed so that

one rail is assembled with RA-sliders,

assuring precise movement, meanwhile

capable of some slider rotation to

compensate for axial misalignment. The

other rail

mounted

with RP-

sliders, which

in addition to

axial misalignment

also compensates for

longitudinal parallelism

errors, as the slider allows

some free lateral movement,

while maintaining its original

preload and same precise straight-

line movement.

The “Rotating” RA- sliders are

mounted with two or three guiding

R_V-rollers (depending if slider

has 3 or 5 rollers in total), which

are aligned against the same lower

raceway for max. radial load

capacity. While one or two

(depending if slider has three or

five rollers in total) floating R_P-

rollers are mounted against the

upper raceway. This configuration

allows the RA-slider a minor

rotation, around the contact points

of the lower raceway. This

compensates for axial

misalignment, while maintaining

its original preload and same

straight, precision motion. The idea behind the concept is to offer

the engineers a compact linear system,

which provides assembly cost savings,

for the wide range of medium precision

applications. The target market for

TWINRACE is the medium accuracy

applications, where the precision of

recirculating linear guides is not needed.

TWINRACE yields savings in these

applications through lower cost. Reduced

assembly time, custom allignment at

assembly and product precision

requirements for the mounting surfaces.

Rail with a “Rotating” slider RA series.Rail with a “Floating” slider RP series.

“Floating” slider RP series. “Rotating” slider RA series.

The “Floating” RP-sliders contain

only floating R_P rollers, three or

five in total. The contact areas with

the raceways only provide for

radial load and Mz capacities, thus

allowing for axial movement and

a simultaneous slight rotation of

the slider to offer axial and

longitidinal compensation, while

maintaining original preload and

same precise and smooth straight-

line movement.

As for the MONORACE system, also

the TWINRACE system is available

with MRL and MRS-rails. When the

fixing holes are descent aligned or

usage of T-slot in profiles, it becomes

natural for most applications, to use

the self-aligning MRS rails with

countersunk fixing holes, for easy

and fast rail assembling.

The radial load and Mz moment

capacities remains the same as for

MONORACE system, while axial load

and My – Mx moments are generally

not present in a configuration of two

parallel linear rails.

SELF-ALIGNING TELESCOPIC SYSTEM

The TLR and TLQ rails are the world’s

only telescopic rail system which

incorporates self-aligning feature to

absorb parallelism errors of the

mounting surfaces.

The TLR telescopic rails are designed

for heavy duty High-Tech telescopic

applications, with precise motorized

movement, requiring constant smooth

sliding performance with no play.

The special smooth operating

performance is due to double-row

precision bearings, strong rails with

hardened and honed raceways, fixed

to a rigid intermediate S-shaped steel

plate, assuring high load capacities

and low deflexion at even fully

extended position.

The TLR telescopic rails assure

unique self-aligning capability, when

used in pairs.

COMPENSATION OF ASSEMBLING/SURFACE ERRORS

The right telescopic rail TLRD, allows

the RA-like-sliders to rotate with no

play, in the lower rail-element to

compensate for surface

misalignments, while the rigid left

TLRS telescopic rail, maintains a

stable and precise extension.

TLR system offers unique possibilities

and benefits for all kind of automation

applications with variable telescopic

strokes, which until now have been

troubled by common friction and

breakdown problems, during the ball-

cage rephasing when using of old-

type ball-cage telescopic rails.

To assure max. load capacity the

telescopic rail must be correctly

positioned according to the rollers’

positioning, - which are non-symmetric

and with different position in upper –

lower rail element.

Therefore the extended part must

always be fixed to the lower rail, which

is identified by the letter B.

All TELERACE telescopic rails

guarantee maintenance free

operation, thanks to strong raceway

wipers and longitudinal seals for dust

and impurity protection, and an

integrated lubef for-life greasing

system, assuring a constant thin layer

of lubrification on the raceway

surfaces.

All TELERACE telescopic rails are

equipped with internal end-stops,

only designed to drag the

intermediate element. It is therefore

highly recommended not to use these

internal end- of stroke travel limits as

functional terminals; strong external

end-stops must be added.

The TELERACE’s load capacities

are intended at half extension (L/2)

as indicated in by letter “P” in below

drawing. Unlike ball-cages drawer

slides, the TELERACE max. load

capacities are based on continuously

non-stop operation.

Therefore a straight load comparison

with other telescopic rails isn’t

possible, as these load capacities

are merely a static load capacity,

based on low daily frequency.

To offer a wide range of load

capacities and extensions, the TLR

telescopic rails come in 2 dimensions.

The TLR.80, based on 28mm rails

with outer height of 80mm and

TLR.116, based on 43mm rails, with

outer height of 116mm. Both rails

come with an overall black finish.

32 33

TELESCOPIC RAIL TLR116 SERIES

In the case of horizontal panel

extension, we recommend the use

of a pair of TLR and TLQ, as the TLR

can absorb some lateral structural

misalignments on the vertical axis.

TLQ system assures smooth

extension for all kinds of automation

applications with variable telescopic

strokes, which until now have been

troubled by common friction

breakdown problems, during the ball-

cage rephasing, when using typical

drawer slides. Same rephase

problem or even deformation of the

ball-cages, occurs for all vertical

applications, as the ball-cage in such

telescopic rails, constantly tend to

move downwards, so extra friction is

generated with each stroke, during

the repositioning of the ball-cages.

To assure max. load capacity the

telescopic rails must be correctly

orientation, assembled.

The extended part must always be

fixed to the shortest slider, identified

by the letter B.

The very compact TLQ telescopic

rails are designed for High-Tech

telescopic applications with precise

motorized movement, requiring

constant smooth sliding performance

with no play.

The squared designed is obtained

by using two MR-rails with hardened

honed raceways, as the rigid

intermediate element, into which the

sliders are assembled. The TLQ

telescopic rails offer both high radial

and axial load capacities.

The rail/slider configuration allows

the TLQ telescopic rails to be

mounted not only at the side, but also

underneath the moving part, when

there are space limitations at the

sides, or to be used in typical vertical

applications. See below tables and

figures.

All TELERACE telescopic rails

guarantee maintenance free

operation, thanks to strong raceway

wipers and longitudinal seals for dust

and impurity protection, and an

integrated lubed for-life greasing

system, assuring a constant thin layer

of lubrification on the raceway

surfaces.

All TELERACE telescopic rails are

equipped with internal end-stops,

on ly des igned to drag the

intermediate element. It is therefore

highly recommended not to use these

internal end of stroke travel limits as

functional terminals; strong external

end-stops must be added.

Similarly to the TLR series, the TLQ’s

stroke goes slightly beyond the

overall length of the rail in closed

position.

The rails come with an overall black

finish.

VERSATILE LINEAR SYSTEM

The FLEXRACE system provides an

extremely versatile linear system, with

great variety of rail configurations for a

wide range of applications.

FLEXRACE is designed to be a strong

and simple multitask linear system for

larger handling and automation

applications. It is a Low -cost, easy to

assemble system, that offers smooth

motion even on inaccurate surfaces.

1. Wide-base configurations for

high cantilever moments.

With external slider/structure

2. Combined solutions to obtain telescopic systems.

With internal slider/structure

3. Solutions with

flat mounted rails.

4. Applications for doorsand shields.

It is also possible to assemble a

combination of guiding (REV43-

RCV43) rollers and loading rollers

(REP43-RCP43), to obtain linear

system which can compensate

structural misalignments.

FXR RAIL WITH ROLLERS

Roller assembling to mobile part The position and number of rollers

depends on the size, weight and force

applied on the moving element, see

also pages 42-43 for further

indications.

In general, the rollers should be

positioned, along the axis upon which

the radial-load is applied. When the

moving part is just resting on the rails,

only concentric rollers are assembled.

For applications where a guiding

slider/support is constructed, a

combination of concentric rollers and

eccentric rollers must be used, see

example figure A. Only the eccentric

rollers allow for preload setting. For

application with a guiding

slider/support, similar to figure A, but

with the rails positioned far apart, it

is recommend to assemble loading

rollers REP43 in lower rail, when only

radial loaded.

In case more than 2 rollers are

mounted on the same rail, it is

recommended to use 2 concentric

rollers at the two ends of the moving

part and all remaining central rollers

of the eccentric REP or REV type, in

order to eliminate as much as

possible of roller misalignment, by

having a max 0,8mm displacement

of the roller, ref. below figure B.

The ROLLERACE rollers coded with

the middle letter E ( REV or REP)

have an eccentric integrated pivot,

which allows for a clearance-preload

adjustment of the linear system.

The assembled sliders are normally

supplied with a standard preload

setting, according to the MR-rail it is

supplied with, ensuring maximum

smoothness with no play.

Roller preload setting

For more detailed information on ROLLERACE rollers, refer to page 6.

LOAD CAPACITY

• Insert the Allen wrenche through

the rail attachment hole, into the

socket head of the roller to calibrate,

only the rollers which are

accessable.

• slightly loosen a bit the rollers fixing

screw to enable some pivoting

movement of the screw (not too

much).

• Slightly rotate the roller by means

of the socket head screw in one

direction or, alternatively, in the

other, to “feel” the increase of

clearance or preload. Reach the

position of a clearance. Then turn

the roller against upper raceway to

eliminate the clearance, achieving

a small preload. Subsequently,

tighten the screw again, maintaining

firm the socket head screw behind

the roller;

The preload is set for the slider in

the special raceway it comes with -

To avoid the need of additional

adjustments, keep the sliders and

rail/raceway together.

However in case preload setting or

adjustment is necessary, this is easily

done by turning the rollers with the

eccentric pivot by means of a pair of

Allen wrenches, as shown below.

Manual adjustment of the slider

inserted in the MR-rail:

Tightening torgue of rollers:

RR18 = 3 Nm

RR28 = 9 Nm

RR43 = 22 Nm

• Verify the slider’s running

smoothness along the rail.

• Caution: the slider should move

very easily, but without any

clearance. If the slider moves with

difficulty, it means that the preload

setting is too high and this may

result in a reduced lifetime of the

MR rail.

• In order to obtain precise preload

setting, specific adjustment tools

are available on request. These

tools are special preload

measurement devices, very much

similar to those used during

production. Our Technical

Department is always available for

any further explanation or advice.

For applications with more than 2

rollers in a pair of rails, we

recommend the configuration of

concentric and eccentric rollers as

indicated in figure C.

Sizing control System lifetimeWhen the positioning and configuration

of rails and sliders or rollers is

determined, it is necessary to verify the

correct sizing of system components,

for both static and dynamic function.

With regard to the static verification, it

is necessary to determine the load

applied onto each single slider. When

the heaviest loaded slider is identified,

the safety coefficient must be calculated

on that slider and the result must be

compared with the maximum static load

capacity.

When the load applied is the result of

a sum of radial and axial loads as well

as moments, it is necessary to calculate

the value of each component and verify

the following:

Pax----------Co ax

Prad----------Co rad

Mx----------

Mox

My----------

Moy

Mz----------

Moz

1------

Z+ + + + <=

Where:

• Pax = axial load component;

• Prad = radial load component;

• Mx,My, Mz = applied moments;

• Co ax = axial load capacity

• Co rad = radial load capacity;

• Mox,Moy, Moz = resistance capacity to moments;

• Z = safety coefficient >= 1

1------

Z<=

Pax----------Co ax

Prad----------Co rad

+

For system sizing of FLEXRACE,

only the axial (Pax) and radial (Prad)

load components must be taken into

consideration. As a result, it is

sufficient to calculate the following:

Z

1 - 1,5

1,5 - 2

2 - 3,5

Application conditions

Accurate determination of static and dynamic loads.Precise assembly, tight structure.

Average conditions

Insufficient determination of applied loads.Vibrations, loose structure. Imprecise assembly.Unfavourable environmental conditions.

It is recommended to apply the following values to safety coefficient Z:

The actual lifetime of the system (rails,

sliders, and rollers) depends on the

applied load, but is also influenced by

factors such as: correct lubrification,

environmental conditions, assembly

precision to avoid uncalculated

component stress/wear, total cycle

length.

In order to estimate the expected system

lifetime in km of operation, the following

equation must be solved:

L(Km) = 100 x (C/P)3 x fc/n x fa

Where:

Co= dynamic load coefficient of roller or slider

P = is the equivalent load applied on the heaviest loaded roller or slider.

For each single roller: P = P rad + (Pax / Co ax) x Co rad

For the slider: P = P rad + (Pax / Coax + Mx / Mox + My / Moy + Mz / Moz)

x Co rad

Fc = coefficient depending on the actual length of the stroke. This is an

important factor in the case of applications with short stroke and high

frequency. In these cases total lifetime in km is much shorter, than if application

with long strokes. The factor is equal to 1 for stroke longer than 2 meter,

while for shorter than 2 meter, the value is derived from the graph shown

below:

n = number of rollers or sliders running on the same rail.

fa = coefficient depending on lubrication and environmental conditions;

recommended values are shown in the table below:

fa

0,7 - 1

0,2 - 0,5

0,05 - 0,1

Application conditions

Good lubrication; availability of self-lubricating railwiper system; no dust accumulation and no pollutants;precise assembly.

Random lubrication; environmental dust;thermal fluctuations; vibrations.

Low lubrication; high environmental pollution;strong thermal fluctuations; high vibrations.

Corrosion Resistance All MR and FXR rails have a surface

treatment, which guarantees the

hardness and offers a high resistance

to corrosion. As the surface treatment

is carried out after working the

raceways, the complete surface has

a high corrosion protection also on

the raceways.

The treatment gives the rails an

overall black finish.

In comparison to traditional electrolytic

galvanization zinc plating, this surface

treatment offer a much better corrosion

resistance protection of the rails, which

usually are more exposed to corrosion

than the sliders.

All sliders and intermediate plate in TLR

telescopic rails have an electrolytic zinc

platting surface treatment.

Maintenance The roller’s internal elements are

lubricated and protected by double lip

seals (2RS). As a result, they are

maintenance free.

The sliders of the MONORACE and

TWINRACE systems are equipped with

lateral seals and a system of strong rail

wipers, which incorporate a lubrification

system, assuring a release of lubricating

oil on the raceways overtime. This gives

a maintenance free systemfor the entire

lifetime, under normal clean operational

environment.

A similar rail wiper and lubrification

system is also standard assembled on

the entire system of TELERACE

telescopic rails of the TLR series.

In case the wipers with integrated

lubrication system is disassembled,

it is necessary to provide a periodic

manual lubrication of the raceways,

to assure a sufficient lubrication on

the contact areas. In addition, it is

also necessary to regularly clean the

raceways for impurities or other

residues.

For lubrification we recommend to

apply standard Litium soap

lubrication, specific for ball bearings.

Any further technical product

information or questions about their

correct installation, may be requested

to our Technical Department, which

also support with our best technical

dimensioning of any application.

Additional technical information

Linear precision As a result, two slider precision values

are determined, one referring to the

surface the rails is fixed to ( = A ) and

the other ( = B ) to the precision of

supporting rail.

Precision is achieved when the

surfaces are aligned.

When all screws are correctly

tightened, the MR rail aligns with the

fixing surface, and this adds up to

the construction linear precision of

the same rail.

When the MR-rail is loose, it may

result slightly curved. However, this

does not give rise to any problem of

alignment, once the rail is properly

fixed.

T RACE reserves it right to change

data and characteristics in the

catalogue without further notice.

We apologize in case any

errors or omissions

have been made, despite

every care has been taken

in making the catalogue.

The linear precision of the running

slider depends on the rail and,

specifically, on the longitudinal

parallelism between the raceways

and precision of the surface to which

they are mounted.
