The quality of the new simplehuman Recycler Sensor Bin is extraordinary. Evident from the first time you use its

nylon discs to effortlessly glide it across the floor, or activate the silent motion-activated opening-and-closing mechanism, the bin actually responds to how you’re using it.

Sensors detect when you approach and the bin opens its lid automatically, ready to receive your rubbish.

Incredible technology Where it gets really clever, however, is that the bin can sense when you’re doing longer chores – like peeling something or changing the liner. In these cases, it'll not only open its lid wider to accommodate your needs, it'll also stay open for an extended 30-second period – even if you walk away.

The trigger zone is a focused space directly above the lid. It's easy to reach when you want to use the bin, but it's also very precise. The sensor's signal doesn't spill out in front of the bin where it can be mistakenly triggered by people walking nearby.

You're unlikely to find a fresher-smelling bin either. Fitted with special carbon filters that eliminate odours naturally, it should keep your kitchen smelling of treats, not trash.

Speaking of trash, it's worth mentioning that the bin is pretty clever on the inside too,

coming with two internal buckets to allow easy separation between general waste and recycling. Each of these buckets lifts out separately, so you won't have to wait for the garbage section to be full before taking out the recycling – and vice versa.

Meet the owners:Helensvale Howards: Ian and Gay Redmile

Eight years ago, Ian and Gay Redmile were working in the corporate world. Gay was a professional recruiter, while Ian was General Manager of Barbeques Galore Wholesale and Export Division – but they both wanted something different.

“Ian had always wanted his own business and fell in love with Howards from shopping in the store,” says Gay. They were living in Sydney at the time, but no shops were due to open there in the short-term. “We were originally from Melbourne, so we decided to take an opportunity there and move back.”

After six great years in Melbourne, Ian and Gay decided a sea change was in order: “I've got family in Helensvale so when the store became available it was an opportunity we couldn't resist,” says Gay. They have loved every minute in Queensland, particularly with the customers. “Our customers are really lovely; most are repeat visitors and they are like friends.”

Being franchisees has made sense to this ex-corporate couple. “You have your own business, but are part of an organisation,” says Gay. She adds: “We like the support; we can talk to other stores, share good things. And it's good to have the Group Office. We can go to it for any situation.”

Gay says the greatest reward has been the sense of achievement: “We love the self satisfaction of running our own business; being in control of our own destiny.”

My client was dismayed! Her 1930s, delicately painted, fine bone china afternoon tea set

was worthless – not because it was poor quality, but because she had failed to use it. We were decluttering her attic and she decided the tea set inherited from her uncle could be sold, but upon inspection, the antiques expert advised it was full of star cracks and would disintegrate once filled with hot beverages. Fine bone china needs to be used. By storing it for “good”, not only had she denied herself the pleasure of using it but potentially several hundred dollars from ultimately selling it. The saying “use it or lose it” is applicable to more than fitness; it can also apply to our possessions.

We have expensive dinner sets, wine glasses and cutlery, which we save for special occasions. For over 30 years, I hung on to a set of water glasses that were a wedding gift. Recently, the ordinary kitchen glasses needed replacement and, rather than purchase new ones, I commissioned the ‘special set’ for everyday use. The whole family commented on how nice they were to drink from.

I saved money and the time involved purchasing a new set and also gained some precious storage real estate. Furthermore, the environmental cost of purchasing duplicate items for ‘good’ and for ‘every day’ is worth considering.

Using quality items for everyday use means simple pleasures are enhanced. A cup of tea is a little nicer from a fine cup than a cheap, clunky mug. Of course, there is always a risk that in using an item it could be damaged, but at least we will have had the enjoyment of its use on a daily basis. And quality items may need replacing less frequently.

My grandfather used to say: “I am too poor to buy cheap.” He bought the best

he could afford; he needed his purchases to last. And as for wear and tear, items used and loved gain a genuine patina, which can become an inherent part of its beauty. Think of an antique kitchen table.

So after my experience with the glasses,

I have resolved to use ‘special’ items every day and, in doing so, make every day more special. To enjoy using quality hangers that extend the life of my clothes, to write with a smooth roller ball pen rather than the hotel give-away, to store leftovers in quality containers with a good seal and easy snap locking. Investing in quality for every day, rather than having duplicates for ‘good’, is a small step in the quest for a little more organisation. Fewer items of better quality pays dividends in time, space and money... which we could all do with.

■ Why wait for a special occasion?

Silicone is fast becoming the material of choice for many home applications. There are, however, different types

of silicones, and while they may all initially perform the desired function, it is with time that quality becomes important.

Silicone itself is an inert synthetic compound/polymer chiefly comprising silicon, carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Its characteristics are a rubber-like texture with low conductivity, low reactivity and low toxicity. In short, it is a flexible, thermally stable compound that does not support microbial growth, doesn’t stick and is UV resistant (so its bright colours won’t fade).

These key attributes translate, in good-quality silicone, to an item that will withstand heat to 250°C, remain flexible during heating or cooling, resist flavour or odour absorption, and not leech colour or chemicals.

For new mums and mums-to-be, the challenge of keeping everything under control lies in creating a functional

space that is well organised with a place for everything. Key to this are simple systems that can be maintained with very little fuss and can evolve as your child's needs change, through three early phases – newborn, toddler and preschool. To help you get organised, here are our top tips.

NewbornOrganising a room for a newborn brings many challenges, not least of which is finding a home for the large amount of clothes your new baby will use on a daily basis. Before you have a baby, you think you have everything you’ll need for a week without washing, but some days you feel like you are changing your baby's outfit every hour – so be prepared!

Also, keep in mind that sizing isn't an exact science. If your baby arrives looking a touch smaller than you expected, your 000 size isn't going to fit for a few weeks and you'll be scrambling to find 0000. Conversely, growth spurts can see last week's top suddenly become a size too small!

Allocate a drawer for each size of clothes and move them upwards as you need them. Outgrown clothes can go directly into storage or to another mum.

If you're standing with a baby in your arms, taking a fresh jumpsuit or singlet from the

top drawer is always the easiest option. As such, the best solution is a system with either several top drawers or a large top drawer containing dividers so that rompers, singlets, tops, booties and warm items can be kept separate but always visible and easy to locate.

While your newborn is small, another great idea is a purpose-specific change table, as

it's not only the right height but also houses everything needed for efficient and safe nappy changing, from wipes to disposal bags. Place this near your set of drawers so you can reach a change of clothes with one hand. Don't worry – this will soon be second nature!

Quick tips Figure out how much storage space you'll need… then put in more. Almost without fail, parents underestimate the amount of stuff they'll acquire for their newborn.

ToddlerThe sense of peace and calm that you once tried so hard to create for your newborn's nursery has disappeared. Within two minutes of you tidying up, your giggling toddler has pulled everything onto the floor looking for a book.

Now is the time to edit your child's toy collection. We sympathise with how heartbreaking it can be to take Mr Fluffy out of circulation, as particular toys are a potent reminder of those exciting first months. But if your toddler no longer plays with him, Mr Fluffy should go – less unused toys mean less mess and easy organisation.

Fear not though – if Mr Fluffy is too precious to throw away, store him safely

and he can be a fantastic keepsake for when your child is older.

Next, get all the toys and books off the floor to give your child more room to play and reduce trip hazards. Invest in a compartmentalised bookshelf or hanging shelves to lift everything up and away.

grow with your needs. Specific space can be allocated to toys, books, cars, dolls or balls.

Pre-schoolerOrganising your child’s space is now about making room for a range of activities from painting to playing at the beach.

By now a more child-friendly system will be needed for your child's clothes and the hanging part of the wardrobe plays a larger role for storing dresses and shirts. Looser items like jumpers and cardigans are starting to have a longer life. They are also getting bulkier and clothing like this is still best stored lower, with everyday items above.

The ever-expanding toy collection is now a thing to behold. Your child should be in the habit of putting things away in groups, and their understanding of what goes where should have improved dramatically.

If your child is still confused, take a photo of what the drawer should contain and attach the image to the front as a visual label.

Crouch down for a child's-eye view. Are the things they need easy for them to reach and put back? Sit on the floor and see!

It's well worth bringing your child into the process too. Watch them for a while and see if you can understand their organisational logic. It may well make perfect sense for an adult to separate cars and dinosaurs, but if the child likes to keep them together then you might as well stick to their system.

Finally, take toys in and out of circulation. Kids get a huge amount of pleasure being reacquainted with a toy they'd forgotten about.

#5 Add some excitement Buy storage solutions that

excite your child and he or she will be much more inclined to use them. After all, a sense of ownership is the first step towards having a desire to keep their own space clean. #1 Break the job down For example, instead of saying, “Go

clean your room,” say, “Do you want to pick up the dolls or the crayons? The big things or the little things? #2Create a game Another option at clean-up time is to

Supper Surprise!

Jared Ingersoll gives the rum baba, a traditional favourite, a surprising twist.

Let the babas soak in syrup for at least 20 minutes!

Typically, a baba is soaked in a syrup made from dark rum. I came up with this version one night when trying to

pair a dessert with a particularly delicious Gewürztraminer wine. I really like the results as this wine variety is big enough in flavour and body to enable some very good flavour combinations. It is best to make the syrup first.

For the syrup 150 ml (5 fl oz) water 335 g (11¾ oz/1½ cups) sugar 6 dried apricots 6 pieces of dried pear 1 vanilla bean, split 400 ml (14 fl oz) Gewürztraminer wine

For the babas 60 g (2¼ oz/½ cup) raisins100 ml (3½ fl oz) Gewürztraminer wine1 teaspoon dried yeast80 ml (2½ fl oz/¹⁄ 3 cup) milk,warmed slightly125 g (4½ oz/1 cup) plain(all-purpose) flour2 eggsa big pinch of sugara pinch of salt100 g (3½ oz) unsalted butter, softened

To make the syrup, combine the water and sugar in a saucepan, then place over a high heat and stir until the sugar has dissolved, then add the dried fruit, vanilla bean and wine. Bring back up to heat but do not boil. Just before it is about to simmer, remove from the heat and allow to cool.

To make the babas, put the raisins in a small bowl with the wine and set to one side to soak.

In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in the milk and let it sit for a moment. Now mix in the flour and eggs and beat until you have a smooth dough, then cover with plastic wrap and allow to rise at room temperature for about 45 minutes.

Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F/Gas 4). Add the sugar, salt and butter to the batter, mixing vigorously to incorporate.

When all of the butter is combined, add the

soaked raisins and wine and beat really well.Grease a six-hole 125 ml (4 fl oz/½ cup)

muffin tin with a little butter before dividing the batter among the holes. Let the mixture rise until the holes are full, then place them in the oven for 20–25 minutes until golden. To test if the babas are ready, insert a skewer – if it comes out clean, the babas are cooked.

When the babas have been allowed to cool slightly, lift them from the tin, place them in the syrup and let them soak for at least 20 minutes. You can actually store the babas in the syrup overnight. When you are ready to serve, lift a baba onto a plate and add a piece of the apricot and pear.

Spoon some of the syrup into a saucepan and place over high heat and bring to the boil. Pour the hot syrup over the cake and, if you feel inclined, serve with a little whipped cream. ■ inplace

Life is full of potential distractions, from “unmissable” TV shows to “making a quick cup of tea before I start”. The

magic of distractions is how they sit in hiding until you resolve to do something important. Overcoming these obstacles is difficult, but with a bit of willpower you could soon be the super-fit, super-organised person that you know you can be.

HealthWe all know that a healthier lifestyle is better in every way, so what's stopping us from getting off that couch and heading to the gym, taking a walk or saying “no thank you” to unhealthy food? Professional Ironwoman and three time winner of the Coolangatta Gold, Hayley Bateup (also known as Nitro from her starring role on Australian Gladiators) says she feels “people are often overwhelmed by the big picture and need to break their goals down into components.”

Hayley also believes that many people are after a miracle result, which creates new obstacles: “When an advertising campaign or promotion tells people they can lose 5kg in a week, expectations become skewed and,

when we fail to achieve an unrealistic goal, we become disheartened.” If weight loss is the goal, she suggests taking a long term view and, instead of focusing on the 5kg mark, to aim each week for a small but sustainable loss: “Any healthy weight loss is a step in the right direction, so be proud of your achievements.”

It's also worth remembering that we are all human and sometimes weight loss does not go to plan. “If your weight goes up, don't give up. Think about what caused it and create a strategy to avoid that situation or manage that meal in the future,” Hayley says.

The same applies to physical fitness; no-one is going to wake up one morning and run a marathon having never run a kilometre in their life. That said, unless you actually start by running that single kilometre, you will never run a marathon (have a chat with your doctor before setting off though, as everyone has different health considerations).

Some of the obstacles we tend to put in the way of exercise include time, effort, and the old “I just don't like it.”

Hayley suggests starting small and calling on friends to get started: “A half-hour walk or run is always going to be better for you than half an hour on the couch, and if you are meeting a friend it's even harder to talk yourself out of it.”

It's okay to fall off the exercise wagon; we all get too busy occasionally. The most important thing is simply to stick with it!

EducationThe idea of going back to school and learning a new set of skills is something most people consider at some point in their lives. Obstacles can be as deep as fear and as practical as time constraints. To overcome

fear, try to break the issue down into manageable portions. If, for example, you were considering a course in Australian literature, rather than buying all the books at once and feeling overwhelmed, start small, familiarise yourself with the reading list and read the novel that seems the most appealing. By starting with baby steps, you'll be on your way to giving yourself the boost of confidence needed to get on with the next novel.

Time is an entirely different problem and requires good organisational skills. It also needs the realisation that the time you have freed up is time for pursuing your new goal. For example, a well-organised pantry in conjunction with a well-planned menu for the entire week will save you oodles of time when shopping and cooking. This spare time can now be used to read, research and think.

HappinessDr Tony Grant, Director of the Coaching Psychology Unit at the University of Sydney, star of the hit ABC documentary, Making Australia Happy and author of Eight Steps to Happiness, is a firm believer in positive psychology. “We have a huge amount of influence on how happy we are – the choices we make on a daily basis determine our happiness,” says Dr Grant.

He believes our levels of happiness are largely determined by the level of meaning and engagement we have in our lives, including how we feel about ourselves and the world.

When it comes to happiness, obstacles to motivation can be deep-seated and require complex analysis, but getting started may be as simple as reviewing the way you greet each day. Start by listing the positives, such as family, friends and opportunities. These are the areas that enrich our lives. By focusing on these soul-enriching parts of life, rather than objects and short term satisfactions, long-term happiness can be achievable.

Next, think about how you interpret things. Dr Grant suggests examining your view to determine if it's “helpful in enhancing your wellbeing – or not.” Orientating yourself toward happiness and wellbeing does not mean suddenly loving everything and everyone, but can be as simple as looking for the good in a cold rainy day – you might take it as a great opportunity to cook a great meal, read a new book, or organise a messy cupboard. ■ inplace

The Howards Blogger Challenge has begun – but what does it take to run a top blog?

The Challenge is On!

Over the past few years the world of personal blogging has exploded. One of the most exciting topics

being covered is the home, with bloggers sharing their opinions on everything from decorating to organising.

So, who better than bloggers for our latest makeover challenge? We’ve picked four of Australia’s best and given each of them a $1000 voucher to bring organisation to an area of their home.

But what does it take to run a popular blog? An excellent example is Table Tonic – a fabulously eclectic meld of interior design, home solutions, food and life. It was started by Louise Bell in 2009: “I was looking for a new career path and everyone else was blogging. It was December and I had some time and just dived in.”

The ability to communicate mood is essential to good blogging and Louise sees this reflected in the way some blogs have

evolved into books and television. Also key to Louise’s success has been the fact that she blogs every day: “There is just so much to blog about, so much to be inspired about; it just comes and out it goes.”

Louise’s dedication creates a continuous dialogue with her readers and also allows the blog’s focus to shift: “I have thrown in fashion and that went really well, and lately food and, even more recently, healthy food. There has been a great response to that.”

Selected bloggers have been given a Howards $1000 gift card to spend on their homes so that they can share their experience of improving their home’s organisation.

Each blogger will receive a one-on-one consultation with organisation expert Cathy Player to review their areas of concern. Cathy will make suggestions regarding positioning of

items in the home, workflow and Howards products

that could make a difference.
