Celebrating Christ UMC

Irene Keating, Lay Leader

Summer is here and families are figuring out what the children will do with their time. Many church events are directed to children and youth during the summer. If you are able to help with VBS please let Rachel South know. Many grandparents host their grandchildren during VBS and Camp Narnia. It’s a great way to enjoy them and have wonderful entertainment for them too.

The task force to move the capital campaign forward will be forming in June, so if you’re asked to serve please pray about it and I hope you’ll accept the opportunity. This will be a 15 member group and we want to represent the church demographics as much as possible.

June marks the completion of the new HVAC system in the Annex. If you’ve been in there lately you’ve seen the work and also noticed some rooms are hot and others are cold. This will greatly reduce our utility costs too!

The Annex conference room has been moved into the space that was the original bookstore and also known as “the well.” James Faith has moved into the old conference room. Several new staff members are joining us so please come by and welcome them. Graham Michel (front) is the new Youth Director and Kevin Rund (back) is the new Middle School Coordinator in a part time role.

As Told by Tommy Myrick: Now the story about the plumber. Bethlehem UMC has been meeting at a funeral home the last four weeks waiting for us to finish the project. The hold-up has been issues finding a plumber.

Over the past couple of months, folks have been working hard to make necessary repairs and upgrades to this 143-year-old church. One of

the biggest hurdles to completing this project was finding a reliable plumb-er. Trust me, this church needed some major plumbing done!

Bethlehem UMC, Hempstead, TX

Divine Intervention: Here’s the part you haven’t heard

I contacted three different plumbers. Each time I had to

make an appointment to meet, wait for the appointment, then they surveyed the job and told me when they would start. Then I waited for the start date only to: 1. After a week receive a high quote we couldn’t afford, 2. After another 10 days the second plumber didn’t show up or return phone calls, and 3. After another ten days

we finally got someone who said they would help, and I spent three hours with him last Thursday making sketches and materials list. He was going to start this Thursday [May 17]. Tuesday he called and said he was not going to do it. Needless to say I was frustrated and the church was frustrated. Thursday morning I went to check on a lead for a fourth plumber with no results.

I started driving around, praying. I thought I would drive around until I saw a plumbing truck and follow the truck then beg for help. As I was praying

God put in my spirit to go to the plumbing section at Lowes and I would find a plumber. I went to Lowes and walked to the plumbing section to get the plumber. As I approached I saw a couple from the Christ. I asked the guy if he was a plumber and told him God told me to come there. He wasn’t a plumber so I told him he must be there to delay me until the plumber shows up. We talked and as he walked away another guy from Christ walks up. I asked him if he was a plumber and told him the story and he said no, he’s a contractor and could call his plumber. This is 11:30 yesterday morning [May 17]. The plumber owns H&A Plumbing, has seven crews and is booked beyond belief. BUT he can meet me in Hempstead at 1:00 if I can make it. I make it. He looks the job over, we go get a permit from the city and he says he can start Friday morning but his crews are tied up. Everybody ready to praise God? He brought two trucks and put down totally new plumbing from the meter. He had everything roughed in and the inspector passed it. We left at 6 p.m. tonight [May 18]. I told one of the women there, when we left, that he was an angel. There’s no doubt in mind God sent him. Praise the Lord! Yes, Amen! Thank you for sharing, Tommy.

We are the church. We go beyond the walls and past the programs. We are the church. We are not defined by which service we attend, but by

the love we show each other and the world. We are the church. We grow stronger in unity as we worship together and serve in mission. We are the church. It is our privilege to be the hands and feet of God, to bring hope to our neighbor and comfort to the hurting.
