(CNS)—Following passage of legislation to allow same-sex marriage in the state, the Catholic bishops of New York expressed concern “that both marriage and family will be undermined by this tragic presumption of government.” In a June 24 statement, the heads of the state’s eight Catholic dioceses said they were “deeply disappointed and troubled” by the approval of a bill that will “alter radically and forever humanity’s historic understanding of marriage.” The state Senate passed the measure 33-29 in an evening vote on June 24, and NewYork Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat and a Catholic, signed it into law later that night. Unless it is delayed by legal challenges, it will take effect in late July. New York would then become the sixth state to permit same-sex marriage. It currently is allowed in Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont, in addition to the District of Columbia. The bishops said the true definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman “cannot change, though we realize that our beliefs about the nature of marriage will continue to be ridiculed, and that some will even now attempt to enact government sanctions against Churches and religious organizations that preach these timeless truths.” The statement was signed by Archbishop Timothy M. As the head coach of Roncalli’s team, Lauck reveled in every second of the celebration on June 11. But his joy was also touched with a feeling of wistfulness in what may have been the most emotional moment of the day. That moment joined Lauck with Marty and Kathleen Lynch. Ever gracious, even in their deep pain, the husband and wife hugged Lauck and told him how happy they were for him and the girls on the team. Bishop Gettelfinger reflects on 50 years of ministry

ALBANY, N.Y. (CNS)—Followingpassage of legislation to allow same-sexmarriage in the state, the Catholic bishops ofNew York expressed concern “that bothmarriage and family will be undermined bythis tragic presumption of government.”

In a June 24 statement, the heads of thestate’s eight Catholic dioceses said they were“deeply disappointed and troubled” by theapproval of a bill that will “alter radicallyand forever humanity’s historic understandingof marriage.”

The state Senate passed the measure 33-29 in an evening vote on June 24, andNew York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democratand a Catholic, signed it into law later thatnight. Unless it is delayed by legal challenges,it will take effect in late July.

Bishop Gerald A. Gettelfinger wasordained a priest of the Archdiocese ofIndianapolis 50 years ago.

Everywhere he looked, David Lauck savored thescenes of pure emotion that come from winning ahigh school state championship.

He watched the girls in the dugout rush across thesoftball diamond to join their teammates on the field,all of them diving on each other in a joyous, tangledpile of bodies on the pitcher’s mound.

“as a protest of the corrupt political process inNew York state.

“More than half of all New Yorkers oppose thislegislation,” he said. “Yet the governor and the statelegislature have demonized people of faith, whetherthey be Muslims, Jews or Christians, and identifiedthem as bigots and prejudiced” if they opposedchanging the fundamental definition of marriage,he added.

A last-minute amendment to the legislationexempts any clergy members who decline toperform same-sex weddings, and protects any

employee “being managed, directed or supervised byor in conjunction with a religious corporation,benevolent order or a not-for-profit corporation.”

It also says failure to provide same-sex ceremonieswould not “result in any state or local governmentaction to penalize, withhold benefits or discriminateagainst such religious corporation, benevolent order, anot-for-profit corporation operated, supervised orcontrolled by a religious corporation.”

Bishop DiMarzio said the amendment showed that“our political leaders do not believe their own rhetoric.

“If they did, how in good conscience could theycarve out any exemption for institutions that would beproponents of bigotry and prejudice?” he asked. †

Archbishop Daniel M. Buechlein, publisher ofThe Criterion, the archdiocese’s newspaper, has receivedthe prestigious Bishop John England Award from theCatholic Press Association. It was one of four awards thatthe newspaper staff recently won from the Catholic PressAssociation and the Pontifical Society for the Propagationof the Faith.

The England award is named for the Irish-born bishop ofCharleston, S.C., who founded The Catholic Miscellany, theoldest Catholic newspaper in the United States in terms ofcontinuous publication.

Presented annually, the award recognizes publishers inthe Catholic press for the defense of First Amendmentrights, such as freedom of the press and freedom ofreligion. It is the CPA’s highest award for publishers.

The award also recognized Archbishop Buechlein for hislongstanding commitment to his column, “Seeking the Face

of the Lord,” published weekly inThe Criterion.

When the nomination was made,Archbishop Buechlein had nevermissed a deadline for delivering hiscolumn since he became the leaderof the archdiocese in 1992.

“Intensive radiation andchemotherapy treatmentsthrough much of 2008 to treatHodgkin’s lymphoma did not stophim from meeting his deadline,”the nomination read.

“In fact, the archbishop’scommitment to The Criterion is evident by his regularpractice of delivering columns weeks ahead of time.”

Archbishop Buechlein’s commitment to theCatholic press goes back even further to his days asshepherd of the Diocese of Memphis.

While serving as bishop there, he developed his practiceof penning a weekly column for the readers ofCommonsense, the newspaper of the Diocese of Memphis.

The archbishop published columns for more than1,000 consecutive weeks in those two Catholic newspapers.That amazing streak came to an end when he suffered astroke three months ago. He continues to recuperate fromhis health setback, and continued prayers are appreciated.

When he first became a bishop in 1987,Pope John Paul II asked then-Bishop Buechlein toemphasize his role as teacher.

“This weekly column is an important opportunity to doso,” he wrote in his first Criterion column in 1992.

Nearly 19 years later, the archbishop continues to dojust that. He views the newspaper as his primary tool ofevangelization, and his columns touch on importantinformation about our faith and the life of the Church.

Archbishop Buechlein also believes Catholic newspapershave a key role in dealing with the challenges facingthe Church.

“In order to provide information pertinent to theChurch,” he wrote, “a Catholic weekly will not only publishthe good news about the Church, but when there is badnews it too is published.”

Archbishop Buechlein has served as consultor for theUSCCB Ad Hoc Committee to oversee the use of theCatechism of the Catholic Church, co-moderator of theDisciples of Christ-Roman Catholic International Dialogue,member of the USCCB Committee on Evangelization andCatechesis, consultor for the Vatican Congregation forClergy, and member of the USCCB Committee onDivine Worship.

Assistant editor John Shaughnessy was recognized as a2010 Archbishop Edward T. O’Meara journalism winner foroutstanding world mission coverage. He won first place inthe Pontifical Society for the Propagation of the Faith’s“Interviews with Missionaries” category for a feature aboutIndianapolis residents Kelly and Megan Gardner.

The story, “ ‘There are so many ways to help’:Two sisters share an amazing adventure of hope, faith andcaring in a foreign land,” focused on the sisters’mission work in an impoverished area of Peru. Graduates ofBishop Chatard High School in Indianapolis, theGardners are members of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, alsoin Indianapolis.

The awards are named for the late Archbishop O’Meara,who served as the national director of the Pontifical Societyfor the Propagation of the Faith from 1966 to 1979, and wasArchbishop Buechlein’s predecessor as shepherd of theArchdiocese of Indianapolis from 1979 to 1992. Thesociety is responsible for informing Catholics about theChurch’s worldwide mission, and advising them of waysthey can participate in that mission.

This is the fifth consecutive year that a staff member hasbeen recognized for reporting on mission work, notedCriterion editor Mike Krokos.

“There is no doubt that Archbishop O’Meara is smilingright now,” said Krokos as he reflected on the staff againbeing honored. “With the history of the awards and theirconnection to our late archbishop, we were very pleased toonce again be recognized.”

The CPA awards that staff members won for materialpublished in 2010 include:

• First place—Best Regular Column, Family Life,reporter Sean Gallagher, for his monthly column

“Faith and Family.”“These columns offer depth

and good spiritual reflection oneveryday life with a family ofsmall children,” judges wrote.“Good use of literary andscriptural references entwinedwith the family life anecdotes thatmake these columns helpful andinspiring.”

VATICAN CITY (CNS)—Raised Catholic by Jewishand Catholic parents, Msgr. Robert Stern loved his faithbut never planned on becoming a priest.

The outgoing head of the international Vatican agencyCatholic Near East WelfareAssociation said that when he wasin college, the priesthood seemedlike a “gloomy road,” and he hadhis eyes instead on the brighterpath of becoming a nuclearphysicist.

“It was the ‘in’ thing at thetime,” he told Catholic NewsService at CNEWA’s central officeat the Vatican.

But God had different plans forthe native New Yorker, and the“temptation” to enter ordained life

grew while he was an undergraduate student.The tall, spritely 78-year-old priest said he only

thought about the priesthood because he felt theHoly Spirit calling him strongly, and “I wanted to dowhat God wanted.”

Yet, it was with “fear and trepidation” that he startedexploring a priestly vocation in his junior year at college.

However, the increased workload of getting up tospeed on Latin and Greek, which were necessary at thetime before entering a diocesan seminary, meant that hehad to compromise and pursue a less demanding major inmathematics.

“I started out in one direction, and God pushed me inanother,” he said.

That priestly ministry soon took him on a 24-year-long“fantastic and wonderful learning experience” when hewas asked to lead CNEWA from its New York Cityheadquarters in 1987.

Established in 1926 by Pope Pius XI, the associationserves the Churches and peoples of the Middle East,Northeast Africa, India and Eastern Europe, areas where

there are indigenous and ancient Eastern-rite Churches, andwhere Catholics are a minority.

Its programs focus on formation of clergy, religious andlay leaders, building religious and social service institutions,caring for children in need, and humanitarian aid anddevelopment.

But when Msgr. Stern came on board in 1987, he didmore than just fill in for his successor, the late Bishop JohnG. Nolan. Msgr. Stern rebuilt and revitalized the agency andexpanded its reach.

“The first thing was really going back to the sources andsaying what is the mandate of the Holy Father,” he said.

He said he discovered that the agency was meant notonly to help the Eastern Churches and support the peopleand institutions under the jurisdiction of the Congregationfor Eastern Churches, but also to educate Roman Catholicsin the West about their Catholic brothers and sisters in theEast and to work for Christian unity.

With the monsignor’s guidance, CNEWA embarked on aunique approach to ecumenical cooperation, not by basingrelations on theological discussions, but on the concretecontribution of aid and assistance.

“Our policy, almost a mantra we give to our staff, is wesay, ‘Work as though the Church is one unless youencounter a difference,’ ” he said.

That approach has opened doors to good relationshipswith Orthodox and even some Protestant and evangelicalcommunities in the countries that CNEWA serves, he said.

It took years to build up enough trust with some groupsbecause “of course they would wonder what is the realagenda” every time that CNEWA would meet with them andask how it could be of help, he said.

But eventually someone would ask for funds to fix aleaky church roof or to send an Orthodox priest forgraduate studies. “It was in little small steps like that ofhelpfulness that we started to develop a workingrelationship” with non-Catholic communities,Msgr. Stern recalled.

“In some places, we almost helped build the first bridges

toward dialogue with some of the Orthodox Churches,” hesaid, citing the agency’s work in Ethiopia.

“The spirit is, ‘We’re your brothers and sisters, andwe’re one Church,’ ” he explained. It was an attitudewhich put people at ease so they would share their needs“because they’re not being humiliated by the charity.”

Msgr. Stern helped CNEWA extend and strengthen itsprograms in Egypt, India and Eritrea as well.

Having guided the establishment of field offices andthe training of local staff, Msgr. Stern compared his workto being the quartermaster who supplies and manages thelogistics of a national army. Such a position calls forsomeone who is happy working behind the scenes,building “a really good and hopefully enduringmanagement structure and fundraising” with transparentfinancial operations, he said.

While successful on the ground, Msgr. Stern believesthat CNEWA still has “an uphill battle” in enlighteningRoman Catholics in North America that Catholicism hasdeep roots in the East, and that “not everyone who wearsa sari and golden bangles is a Hindu,” and not everyonewho speaks Arabic is Muslim.

The myriad varieties of traditions, liturgies andattitudes within the Catholic Church represent a sort of“ecclesiastical gene pool” in which the more diverse it is,the stronger and more resilient the Church as a whole willbe, he said.

Msgr. Stern said he planned to spend the rest of theyear helping his successor, Msgr. John E. Kozar, “learnthe ropes” and fit into his new role. The priest fromPittsburgh’s election by the CNEWA board was approvedby the Vatican in June.

Msgr. Stern said he won’t be assigned to a new postbecause of his age. But he is ready for whatever newadventure awaits. He said he hopes to continue to put togood use his knowledge and expertise about theMiddle East and Eastern Churches.

“[Or] I can run off and raise tomatoes,” he said.“Whatever God wants.” †

Most of the Catholic schools in the archdiocese plan toparticipate in the Indiana school voucher program that willstart on July 1.

According to archdiocesan officials, 62 of the68 Catholic schools have already committed to the program.

The voucher program, passed by the 2011 Indianalegislature, is targeted toward students who will be comingfrom a public school or who received a tax credit scholarshipduring the 2010-11 school year.

To be eligible for the voucher program, familieshave to meet certain requirements concerning family income.For a family of four with a total income below $41,348, thetotal annual voucher could be up to $4,500 for students infirst grade through eighth grade, and more than $7,000 forstudents in high school.

For a family of four with a total income between $62,022and $41,348, the voucher would be for 50 percent of theschool tuition amount.

The voucher amount is for each eligible student in thefamily, and the voucher would be received for each yearthrough a student’s senior year in high school.

During an eligible student’s 12 years in Catholic schools,a family could receive more than $60,000 in voucherassistance from the state of Indiana to help pay for tuition,according to archdiocesan officials.

“Vouchers will not change the mission or purpose of ourCatholic schools,” said Ron Costello, the archdiocese’ssuperintendent of Catholics schools. “Parents who enrollstudents in our schools need to understand that we areCatholic first and schools second.”

For parents interested in the voucher program, Costellorecommends that they follow three guidelines.

First, check to see that the Catholic school you areconsidering intends to accept vouchers. Second, enroll yourchild in the school. Life in Christ is what the Eucharist isall about.

It is about the personal communionwith Jesus Christ that is experiencedeach time we receive the holy Eucharist.It is about the ecclesial communion thattakes place whenever we gather asChurch around the altar to participate inthe Lord’s sacrificial meal.

It is about his real presence in thesacrament, and his radical closeness toeach of us as we witness to him in ourwords and actions every day.

At Sunday Mass, we remember andrenew the great mystery of ourredemption through Jesus Christ.Faithful to the Lord’s command, we eathis body and drink his blood. We givethanks for the sacrificial gift of Christ’slove, and for the communion of faiththat has united us in his name.

But celebrating the Lord’s Dayincludes more than participation in theSunday Eucharist. Keeping the Lord’sday holy—the third commandment—challenges us to extend the Eucharist tothe entire day and, ultimately, to theentire week.

For modern Americans, a faithfulobservance of the Lord’s Day is trulycountercultural. It challenges us to givetop priority to our faith, to our familiesand to a grateful appreciation of allGod’s gifts. The Lord’s Day is part ofthe celebration of the Creator’s work.

On Sunday, we rejoice in God’saccomplishments in creation andsalvation, and we share in the rest andjoy of the Creator. This rest is not simplyphysical inactivity, but is fundamentallyconcerned with contemplation—notworking, but taking the time to enjoywhat has been accomplished by God forus and through us.

Many of us today feel stressed outbecause we can’t find enough time to doeverything that is expected of us. TheLord’s Day invites us to experiencetime differently.

Sunday is the first day of the week,but it is also the eighth day insofar as itlooks forward to the completion of thiswork of redemption.

On Sunday, we look forward to theday when Christ will come again andbring creation to its perfection ineternal life.

Through our celebration of theLord’s Day, we are invited to experiencetime not as the hurried, fragmentedpassage of hours, days and years, but asthe beginning of new life in Christand as the constant renewal of God’screative and redemptive activity in ourdaily lives.

The Lord’s Day is also the day of theChurch. In particular, the celebration ofthe Eucharist in the parish communityon Sunday manifests the nature of theChurch as the whole mystical body,connected as it is to the universalChurch through union with the

local bishop.As modern life tries to pull us farther

and farther away from our families andfrom the community of faith, observanceof the Lord’s Day helps provide us withthe grace we need to keep first thingsfirst. We are not isolated individualsstruggling to make our way in a hostileworld. We are sisters and brothers inChrist, who are united in faith, hope andlove and who are called to give witnessto the goodness of God’s creation.

Archbishop Robert J. Carlson ofSt. Louis recently offered the followingreflections on the Sunday Eucharist:

“Gathering together each week tokeep holy the Lord’s Day is notoptional. It’s what’s expected of each oneof us. Sunday Mass should not be aburden. Celebrating the SundayEucharist with our parish communityand, indeed, with the whole Churchallows us to worship God, to learn aboutour faith, to open our hearts to the Wordof God, to receive the Bread of Life at thetable of the Lord, and to be strengthenedfor the work we must do during thecoming week.”

On Sunday, we celebrate the joy ofthe Risen Christ, who reveals in hisresurrection the true nature and dignity ofhumanity. We proclaim the Good Newsof salvation, and it is therefore fitting toengage in virtuous practices of prayerand works of charity—on Sunday andthroughout the week that follows.

If we are true to our calling asdisciples of Jesus Christ, Sunday can beso much more than simply one elementof the secular holiday we have come toknow as “the weekend.”

It can truly be the Lord’s Day, a dayof peace, a day of joy and a day ofcommunion with all those we love inJesus’ name.

I wasn’t sure I could do it—attend thefuneral of my friend’s husband.

It was just a yearago that we stood inthat very church,unfolding the pall overmy own husband’scasket. An exquisitemoment—like puttinghim to bed for the lasttime … .

They were sick atthe same time. My

friend and I had walked the walk together,and then there it was, the dreaded funeral ofa gentle, gracious and dear man who hadbefriended me.

I told myself that I didn’t have to go,wouldn’t make myself go, and shouldn’t goif it would cause anyone more grief, but thatmorning a deep calm settled over me. Iwent to the funeral wrapped in my prayershawl.

I sat in the last pew on the center aisle soshe would know that I came. Special friendsfiltered in and filled the pews, and it began.Music, procession, blessing, special stories,eulogy… . I started to sink into “Maybe Ishouldn’t have done this after all.”

Then there was the thump of a kneeler, achild’s voice interrupting the spell of it.

In the corner of my vision was a shortstruggle, a streak toward the sanctuary door,

and a mother with an infant on one armand a diaper bag on the other in hot pursuit.The priest didn’t fumble a bit.

It was a moment before I realized thatthere was nobody to help her there in thehallway of the church. Something stood meup and moved me after them.

“Do you need the cry room? Let meshow you.”

The child sprinted off in the rightdirection, thank goodness.

“Would you hold the baby? Here.”She thrust the infant at me, and off she

went after the toddler, the baby havingbeen caught up in my shawl-covered arms.

I was stunned. Would I hold your baby?So that is how it came to be that I sat in

the cry room on a folding chair with thefuneral liturgy in full sight, perfectly ableto hear it all, with the four walls and achallenging toddler providing emotionaldistance, and cradling a small, warm,breathing bundle snuggled close to myheart.

My cup was full, pressed down andrunning over.

Only later did it occur to me, “My Lordand my God, how perfect is yourProvidence for me.”

I got to hold the baby!

Marriage is not a ‘Catholic thing’Consider This/Stephen Kent

Those who seek to redefine marriage asanything other than the union of one man

and one woman must,by the very longexistence of theinstitution, be held toa high standard ofproof rationale tomake their case.

There is, instead,manipulation oflanguage.

Their theme isinevitably of same-sex marriage, and“a strategy of incremental erosion ofmarriage.”

A newspaper columnist recentlyillustrated this.

The attorney general ofWashington state, in announcing hiscandidacy for governor, said that he isagainst same-sex marriage.

“[Marriage] has to do with families,” hesaid. “It has to do with reproduction ofchildren. It has to do with stability ofsociety,” said Rob McKenna.

Right, three for three. Nothing newhere.

It rubbed Danny Westneat, a columnistfor The Seattle Times, the wrong way.Westneat called McKenna’s position “discriminatory and divorced from reality.”

“Society and science have alreadyrecast marriage and remade the family,” hewrote.

Right. And how’s that working outfor you?

The reality that Westneat sees is thestatus quo.

Noting that married households arenow the minority in Washington state,he says, “meaning there is no marriageat the core of the majority of ourfamilies anymore.”

Westneat is not alone in misunderstanding the intrinsic nature ofmarriage, seeing it as some sort of legalconstruct, no more than a state licenseapproval of sexual relations.

It is not a “Catholic thing.” It is nomore possible to redefine marriage as toredefine water as something other than itselemental constituents.

“Strategies of language are crucialhere,” said the head of the U.S. bishops’effort for promotion and defense ofmarriage. “What we see happening in themarriage debate with terms such as

‘equality’ is similar to the manipulation oflanguage found in the pro-abortion rhetoricof ‘choice,’ ” said Bishop Salvatore J.Cordileone of Oakland, Calif.

The columnist sees the candidate’s viewas divorced from reality. That reality is farfrom perfect, one in much need of rehabili-tation.

“Our culture is one that often forgets thesacred gift of the child,” said BishopCordileone, and “fails to recognize the vitalimportance of a mother and a father togetherfor the life and upbringing of that child.”

Bishop Cordileone’s committee provides avery good analogy: “The word ‘marriage’isn’t simply a label that can be attached todifferent types of relationships. Instead,‘marriage’ reflects a deep reality—the realityof the unique, fruitful, lifelong union that isonly possible between a man and a woman.

“Just as oxygen and hydrogen areessential to water, sexual difference isessential to marriage. The attempt to‘redefine’ marriage to include two persons ofthe same sex denies the reality of whatmarriage is. It is as impossible as trying to‘redefine’ water to include oxygen andnitrogen.”

The columnist urged the candidate tochange his position.

“It would get you into the 21st centurywhen it comes to family,” Westneat advised.

Something very strange has takenplace in the last few years: Christianshave lost touch with heaven! Of the

desire for heaven, our ‘heavenly home,’ wehear hardly a word. It is as if Christians havelost the orientation that for centuries definedthe direction of their journey.

“We have forgotten that we are pilgrims,and the goal of our pilgrimage is heaven.Connected with this is another loss: Welargely lack awareness that we are on adangerous pilgrim path, and that it ispossible for us to miss our goal, to fail toreach the goal of our life. To put it bluntly:we do not long for heaven; we take it forgranted that we shall get there. Thisdiagnosis may be exaggerated, overstated.The trouble is, I am afraid it isessentially true.”

These words were spoken byCardinal Christoph Schöenborn of Vienna ina retreat conference to Pope John Paul IIand his curia during their annual retreat(Loving the Church, San Francisco,Ignatius Press, p. 177). This theme struck meas I read this publication of the cardinal’sretreat conferences while I was on my

annual retreat with the bishops of Indiana,Illinois and Wisconsin a couple weeks ago.

The cardinal speaks of the image of ourChurch as “home” on the way to thekingdom of heaven. Are we forgetting thatlife as we know it on this Earth is not ourdestination? In that sense, the Church is agift to us as “our home on the way home.”It would be good to use our imagination inthinking about our desire—and our need—tobe with Christ, to live with him and to be athome with him.

In his retreat conference, the cardinalevokes the image of people who have losttheir homes or their homeland. For them, theword “home” is a word of longing. Theword “home” has a strongly emotional,almost devotional, resonance. “ ‘Home’ isnot just a particular landscape, not just itslanguage, its familiar landmarks, but aboveall the people who live there. When thepeople we were familiar with [friends,neighbors, acquaintances] no longer livethere, then ‘home’ has died, even if thelandscape remained” (Ibid, p. 178). We olderfolks sense the meaning of that.

The Church is the promise of home. Theperson who has found the Church has founda way home. St. Paul speaks on this theme:“Our home is in heaven” (Phil 3:20). Ourhome is in heaven, because it is in heaventhat we find our true family. He told thepeople of Ephesus: “You are no longerstrangers and travelers, but fellow citizens

En su conferencia de retiro, el cardenalevoca la imagen de aquellas personas quehan perdido sus hogares o sus patrias.Para ellos la palabra “hogar” es unapalabra llena de melancolía. La palabra“hogar” encierra una fuerte connotaciónemocional, casi devota. “El ‘hogar’ no essimplemente un cierto lugar, no essolamente su idioma, sus hitos familiares.Es, por encima de todo, la gente que lohabita. Cuando aquellas personas queconocemos (amigos, vecinos, conocidos),ya no se encuentran allí, el ‘hogar’ hamuerto, aunque el terreno permanezca enel mismo lugar” (Ibid, p. 178). Laspersonas mayores sienten este significado.

La Iglesia es la promesa del hogar.Aquellos que han hallado a la Iglesia, hanhallado su camino a casa. San Pablo hablasobre este asunto: “Nosotros somosciudadanos del cielo (Flp 3: 20). Cardinal Schöenborn remarked, “Hopefor heaven, for full communion with Christ‘and all the angels and saints,’ is the verymotor, the driving force, of Christianengagement in this world” (Ibid). He isconcerned that there is an alarminglypragmatic and horizontal understanding ofthe Church that has become widespread. It isseen too much as a human work, too little asthe place of grace. To that I would add thatlife itself has become so fixed andpreoccupied with our hectic day-to-dayactivities with little thought—or even timefor thought—about the goal of this life.

Are we forgetting that we are a pilgrimpeople on our way to a destination beyondthis worldly life? Are we tending to forgetthat we need God’s grace to arrive in heaven,that we can’t get there on our own? Have welost sight of the need of our Church and thesacraments of our Church as the way wereceive the grace to make this pilgrimage?

Some people want to say, “God, yes.The Church, no!” The problem with thatsentiment is the fact that it wants to ignorethe way home that Jesus himself left for us.

Many people have not only lost sight ofheaven, but also of the meaning and valueof the way to get there. Of course, it is aquestion of faith. And our culture wants toaccept only what it can see. Grace, ofcourse, is not visible. But the sacramentsare. The divinity of Christ was not visiblewhen he walked the Earth and launched thisway home. But his humanity was.

We need to pray for the gift of faith andour hearts must be open to accept it in orderto satisfy our deepest longings for home. †

BALTIMORE (CNS)—Carolyn Y. Woo, deanof the Mendoza College of Business at theUniversity of Notre Dame, has been namedpresident and chief executive officer ofCatholic Relief Services.

Woo, 57, will succeed Ken Hackett, who isretiring after 18 years as head of the bishops’international relief and development agency.

She will begin the job on Jan. 1.“Dr. Woo is a woman of deep faith with a

strong commitment to the mission of theChurch,” Bishop Gerald F. Kicanas of

Tucson, Ariz., chairman of the CRS board ofdirectors, said in a statement from theBaltimore-based agency. “She will bringexceptional abilities and gifts to the task ofserving the poor around the world in the name ofCatholics throughout the United States.”

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Woo servedon the CRS board of directors from 2004 until2010, and traveled to observe the agency’sprogram in Africa and Asia, includingBanda Aceh, Indonesia, soon after theIndian Ocean tsunami.

She immigrated to the United States to attendPurdue University in Indiana, where she receivedbachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. Sheheld various positions at Purdue, ultimatelyserving as associate executive vice president foracademic affairs.

Her teaching and research interests includecorporate and competitive strategy, entrepreneurship, management of innovation andchange, and organizational systems.

A prayer service, a party and apilgrimage.

Benedictine Sister Sharon Bierman,longtime administrator of St. PaulHermitage in Beech Grove, began herretirement celebration on June 25 with aprayer service in the Hermitage chapelfollowed by a party where she greetedfriends from three decades of ministry atthe retirement home adjacent to Our Ladyof Grace Monastery.

On Sept. 5, she will embark on a two-week pilgrimage to Benedictinemonasteries and other holy sites in Italywith Benedictine Sisters Mary Luke Jonesand Joan Marie Massura.

June 30 was Sister Sharon’s officialretirement date, but she said a part of herheart will always remain at the Hermitagewhere she enjoyed ministering for33 years.

She began working at the Hermitageon Aug. 7, 1978, and served as a physicaltherapist and director of rehabilitationuntil Jan. 1, 1999.

On April 3, 2000, she was named theseventh administrator, an assignment thatshe cherished because it gave her dailyopportunities to interact with residentsand their families.

“I have loved being here,” Sister Sharonsaid. “The elderly bring me to life. Theyhave taught me so much. I have gonethrough a spiritual transformation justbeing a part of their wonderful lives. Theresidents are also friends.”

Benedictine Sister Rebecca MarieFitterer, a registered nurse and formerdirector of nursing at the Hermitage,begins her new ministry as the health carefacility’s eighth administrator on July 1.

Currently, there are 110 employees and104 residents.

Among her other duties,Sister Rebecca will oversee a newcapital campaign in 2012 to raise anestimated $2.4 million for necessaryfacilities improvements to the Hermitage,

which also houses a retirement wing forpriests and a health care center forresidents with medical challenges.

Benedictine Sister Juliann Babcock,prioress of Our Lady of Grace Monastery,said Sister Sharon’s love for the elderlyhas enriched the sisters’ ministry at theHermitage, which was founded at therequest of the late Archbishop PaulC. Schulte in 1960.

“Sister Sharon certainly reflects acompassionate presence and a caringmanner for each resident and each staffperson,” Sister Juliann said. “She is verydedicated, and I know loves each personthat is presently at the Hermitage and hasbeen there throughout those 33 years. It’samazing that she remembers their namesand their families.

“She has a great reverence for theelderly,” the prioress said. “St. Benedictsays in the Rule that care of the sickshould come before all else, and I thinkSister Sharon has certainly embodied thatspirit and that part of our Rule as she hascared for the residents as a physicaltherapist and an administrator.”

During 11 years as administrator,Sister Sharon was instrumental in coordinating plans for resident-centeredcare as well as raising funds to hire aresidential nurse, buy a 14-passenger bus,and renovate the Hermitage entrance,dining room, rehabilitation department,recreation room and beauty shop.

She also arranged for each residentto receive an emergency pendant,installed a code alert system on doors,began weekly news updates, andpublished comprehensive handbooks forhealth care, employees and residents.

Sister Sharon also served her sisters asthe physical therapist at the monastery.

Later this year, she will complete aclinical pastoral education course forcertification as a chaplain.

“I want to become a chaplain for eithera hospital or a hospice,” Sister Sharonsaid. “I’ve helped a lot of Hermitageresidents transition from this life to the

next. … My dream would be that I couldbe on call for God. I would visit people inthe hospital and in health care facilities,and be present when God may be callingthem home.

“Death is not scary,” she said. “It’s atransition. Life is changed, not takenaway. A man whose wife died four yearsago told me that, ‘Each year that passes,I’m one year closer to being withher again.’ ”

Sister Sharon’s legacy will continue atSt. Paul Hermitage thanks to six corevalues that she introduced for employeesand residents—respect and dignity,teamwork, hospitality, communitybuilding, honest communication, andpersonal and professional growth.

“When you treat each person withrespect and dignity, that loving spiritpermeates the whole building,” she said.“We are a family.”

Perhaps the greatest lessons she haslearned in her ministries at St. PaulHermitage, Sister Sharon said, are that“God works miracles in everyday life,

and intervenes in the human condition tomake things work out and solve problemsthat seem insurmountable.” †

inspired by the devastating heartbreak of Katie’s death.

Setting an example for living lifeWhen Katie died at age 17 on May 20, the news rocked

the Roncalli community and everyone who knew and lovedher. After an announcement about her sudden and unexpecteddeath was made at the school on that Friday morning,shocked, grief-stricken students looked for understanding andcomfort from each other and their teachers—teachers whoneeded understanding and comfort, too.

A Roncalli teacher, Lauck was at home on that morning,helping his wife, Kara, with their newborn baby, Aubree,who had entered the world just five days earlier. When Lauckreceived the phone call about Katie, the news took away thebreath of the father of four.

Similar to everyone familiar with Katie’s story, Lauckknew that she had been battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma—atype of cancer—for three years. But the expectations and themedical percentages were always high that she wouldeventually recover.

Her doctors believed that she was getting better everyday after she received an adult stem-cell transplant atRiley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis on May 12. Shewas even dancing and laughing in her hospital room on thenight before she died of a blood clot.

“She was happy-go-lucky, always smiling on the field andoff the field,” Lauck recalls. “She was a very confidentplayer. Softball was going to be her sport in high school.”

In her freshman year, she played for Roncalli even as shereceived radiation treatments for the disease. When shecouldn’t play in her sophomore year, she served as amanager for the team. She also attended as many games asshe could this season. Even more telling, she reached out tonearly everyone at Roncalli, making special efforts toconnect with students who are quiet, shy or doubtedthemselves.

That helps explain why more than 4,000 people attendedher wake in the Roncalli gym.

“She had a fighter’s personality,” Lauck says. “She wentaround nationally speaking about cancer awareness. She wasalso involved in the St. Baldrick’s Foundation [an effort inwhich people agree to shave their heads for donations thatbenefit research for a cure of childhood cancer]. A number ofkids at Roncalli shaved their heads every year becauseof her.”

As he thought of Katie, Lauck also focused on someof the girls who knew her well—the members of thesoftball team.

‘We came together’Since the beginning of the softball season in March,

Lauck believed he had a state championship-caliber team.But the team just wasn’t playing like it or acting like it as theseason moved deeper into May.

“There were some trust and chemistry issues with theteam,” Lauck says. “It wasn’t a united team.”

Looking back now, everyone connected with the teamsays the change in attitude came with the news about Katie.

On the afternoon of the day that she died, theteam was scheduled to play against a team fromWhiteland High School. The players all told Lauck thatthey still wanted to play. When he met with them beforethe game, he noticed the depth of their shared sadness.He also noted that the air of invincibility that marksmany teenagers had been shaken. As the players took the

field that day, they all had written Katie’s initials—K.M.L.—on their upper right arms.

“After Katie passed away, everyone was so impacted,”says Kristen Thomas, a senior pitcher on the team. “Itbrought the team closer together. Everyone was so inspiredby her efforts to fight off the cancer.”

Roncalli won the game against Whiteland, but it was ascene afterward that was more memorable.

“We came together at home plate with Whiteland’s teamand offered a prayer for Katie, for her energy and herpersonality,” Lauck recalls. “All the fans were on the field,too. It was a touching moment [that] I’ll never forget andthe players won’t ever forget.”

In the days that followed, Lauck used the tragedy ofKatie’s death to talk about the priorities and foundations oflife—family, faith, relationships, trust, forgiveness andsupport for others. He had stressed those themes throughoutthe season. This time, the players embraced them.

The team also set a goal: “Win State for Kate!”“We wanted to show her what she meant to us, the

whole softball program and all of Roncalli,” Kristen says.Nine straight wins later, the team made it to the state

championship game.

‘They never forgot her’Before the championship game against the team from

Andrean High School in Merrillville, the Roncalli playershung Katie’s softball jersey in their dugout, just as they hadbefore every game throughout the state tournament. Theyalso once again displayed her initials on their upperright arms.

In the stands, the majority of the Roncalli fans worespecial T-shirts honoring the team and Katie. On the rightsleeve of the shirt was Katie’s name. There was also thesymbol of a cross within a heart. Beneath the symbol werethe words, “In Our Hearts.”

Katie’s parents were among the fans wearing the shirts.So were her three older siblings, Sean, Daniel and Kerry.Their presence during the team’s tournament run touchedthe players and their families.

“They actually drove down to Jasper the week before forthe semi-state championship,” says Kathy George, themother of senior player Melanie Keyler. “I know this is so

hard on them, but they keep giving their support becausethey know that’s how Katie would have wanted it. Theirentire family has been such a witness to the power of faithand Christian community. It leaves many of us in awe.”

Roncalli’s 8-0 victory in the championship left their fansin complete joy.

After the pile-up on the pitcher’s mound and countlessrounds of hugs, the team posed for a photo with the statechampionship trophy. Someone remembered to take downKatie’s jersey from the dugout and placed it near the championship trophy. That touch was noticed andappreciated by Katie’s family.

“She’s a special kid,” says Katie’s mother,Kathleen Lynch, about the youngest of her four children.“This was very emotional because those kids were playingtheir hearts out with her in mind. They felt that she was theirangel, carrying them. They never forgot her. People’s livesgo on, but they haven’t forgotten her. It’s so important to usthat people don’t forget her and what she is about. That’swhy these girls and their parents and their coaches are sospecial to us.”

Marty Lynch especially appreciated what Lauck told himfollowing the game.

“When we stood there and talked, Dave said that theteam changed after the unfortunate incident with Kaitlin,”her father recalls. “I was very thankful to know that eventhough she wasn’t able to be there, she was still providingan influence on her peers. It hurt, but it was a proudmoment, too.”

After the celebration on the field, Lauck stressed one lastpoint to his players about their championship run.

“I kept reflecting on the journey of our season,” Laucksays. “I told them the championship feeling will come andgo, but the journey we made together will last.”

That journey has led to two important reminders foreveryone who was a part of it:

The great moments in our lives stay in our memories.The people who touch our lives remain in our

hearts forever.

“One thing that was very sacred in ourhouse was that one never criticized apriest. We always respected the priesthood.And if we had difficulty with an individualpriest, we dealt with him one-on-one. Welearned that as children. So we had a great,deep respect for the priesthood and, ofcourse, for the sacredness of individualpriests as well.

“I really never thought about going tothe seminary until after the end of theeighth grade. During catechism class fortwo weeks during May, [Benedictine]Sister Mary Philip Seib showed a film ofMaryknoll missioners in Africa.

“And three of us first cousins alldecided we ought to be priests. So we toldthe nun, and she told the pastor. And hemade arrangements for us to take theentrance exam. Two of us took it, and Iwas the only one accepted. So what reallystarted out as the Three Musketeers endedup being the Lone Ranger.

“So I began my seminary training atSaint Meinrad on Sept. 9, 1949, and spent12 years there.

“I had 12 years to discern thepriesthood. It was not just a momentarything. It was only after the ninth year that Ireally ultimately said ‘Yes. This is what Iwant to do if the archbishop willaccept [me].’

“Growing up on a family farm, each ofus had responsibilities. It was atremendous experience to know that weneeded each other. But we also learnedvery clearly that, even when Mom andDad did everything very well in terms offarming, if the weather did not cooperate[with] either too much rain or not enoughrain or too much sun, the best was notalways good enough. You know?

“That was comforting in many ways.Because in my 28 years in Indianapolisand 22 years here, my best has not alwaysbeen good enough. I think that was apowerful experience growing up in a farmfamily in St. Bernard Parish inFrenchtown.”

Q. Being the son of a farmer mightlead you to be a good pastor since thatterm itself is an animal husbandry term.

A. “If you look at my coat of arms, Ihave the symbol of the seed sower. I wasborn a farmer, trained as a teacher and aprofessed preacher.”

Q. You were ordained a year beforethe Second Vatican Council wasconvened. What was it like for you as ayoung priest to experience the years ofthe council and the reforms in the life ofthe Church that followed?

A. “My dad, back even in the 1950s,made the comment, ‘Why can’t we haveMass in English?’ I also remember[Benedictine] Archabbot Ignatius Esser ofSaint Meinrad had written Pope Pius XII,and said that if there were ever to be anyexperimentation with the liturgy,Saint Meinrad Archabbey would bewelcome to do that. And so I kind of grewup in that milieu.

“And then when the word came, webegan to interject English into part of theliturgy. So it was kind of an evolutionalthing that took place.

“Then, of course, being in a brand newhigh school and teaching and being anassociate pastor at St. Matthew [theApostle] Parish in Indianapolis, my lifewas consumed pretty well and I didn’thave a lot of chances to reflect on whatwas happening, but more to experience it.

“Superimposed over all of that was theVietnam War. That was all there. And sothe late 1960s for young priests was reallya matter of survival.

“Then the changes came for the liturgy.And the tragic thing about that was thatwhat was decided in Rome on Thursday,we precociously in the United States triedto implement on Friday, with nopreparation.”

Q. In 1989, you received a call fromthe apostolic nuncio’s office telling youthat Pope John Paul II had appointedyou as bishop of Evansville.

Please share your memories ofreceiving that life-changing phone calland what it meant to you at the time.

A. “It was most interesting. There hadbeen rumors from June 1988 that keptebbing and flowing all throughout the

winter that I was going to be bishop ofEvansville. And so as long as the diocesewas not filled, it was a possibility.

“And so when the call came, it was asurprise, yes, but not totally so. Now Iknew that both Archbishop O’Meara andArchbishop Pio Laghi, the nuncio, were inRome. So I knew that it couldn’t happenthat week. Well, it did.

“It was a monsignor from the nunciaturethat called and said that the Holy Fatherwas inviting me to be bishop of Evansvilleand [asked] if I would accept it. He wasthat blunt and straightforward.

“I asked how long I had [to answer].And he said that the bishop of Evansvillewas anxious to retire, and the people ofEvansville were anxious to get anew bishop.

“So I said if the Holy Father was willingto have confidence in me to do it, as well aseverybody else along the way, then I waswilling to accept. And the monsignor said,‘I congratulate you, bishop.’ It was just thatquick.”

Q. Wow. Your life was certainlydifferent from that point onward.

A. “Absolutely. Oh, absolutely. But itwas one that I was not totally unpreparedfor because I had had three greatarchbishops. Archbishop Schulte appointedme as a high school teacher and principal.Then Archbishop Biskup made me schoolsuperintendent. And Archbishop O’Mearamade me chancellor and vicar general.

“They all empowered me and gave methe chance to spread my wings and do whatI could do. They had confidence in me.That was tremendously empowering to me.

“So when I became a bishop, I hadlearned an awful lot. And I also learnedhow to let others do what they could dowell, which I didn’t have to do myself.”

well known among people throughoutthe archdiocese for your love of theoutdoors. How have your camping,canoeing and skiing trips remained animportant part of your life since youwere ordained a bishop in 1989?

A. “It’s all the Boy Scouts’ fault.Msgr. John Ryan, who died in 2005, ofImmaculate Heart of Mary Parish, invitedme to get involved with Scout Troop 174there in Indianapolis, to which, by the way,I’m still affiliated.

“I started canoe trips and in the wintertime with skiing.

“I had always prayed, even as aseminarian, that I might be helpful withyouth. And I could not have written a betteror more exciting script than I’ve hadworking in high school and then withScouting along the way. I’ve kept my feetin both of those camps along the way.

“The outdoors is a fantastic way foryoung people to recognize their need to beinterdependent on each other and also thefact that they are fragile. Our human natureis great in many ways, but we do have ourfragility.

“I’ve always loved working withScouting. I think young people canexperience things in it that they wouldn’t dootherwise.”

Q. You were in the seminary atSaint Meinrad at the same time asArchbishop Buechlein. He was a fewyears behind you. He was also one ofyour co-ordaining bishops at yourepiscopal ordination.

What has it been like for you to be abrother bishop with him over the past22 years, especially since he came toIndianapolis in 1992?

A. “He is a beloved friend. Of course,he was [later] rector of Saint Meinrad,which is my home away from home,

Archbishop Daniel M. Buechlein, thenthe bishop of Memphis, Tenn., was a co-ordaining bishop. They had known eachother since their days together in theseminary.

For the next 22 years,Bishop Gettelfinger led the Church insouthwestern Indiana. Last fall, heturned 75, the age at which canon lawrequires bishops to submit their resignationto the pope.

Pope Benedict XVI accepted hisresignation on April 26. On the sameday, his successor, Bishop-designateCharles C. Thompson, was announced. Hewas ordained and installed on June 29.

Q. What are some of the highlights ofyour tenure as the bishop of Evansville?

A. “That’s a tough question becausethere are both positives and negatives. Thepositive side is that the folks in theEvansville Diocese welcomed me mostcordially. It’s been a great, greatexperience.

“The negative side, of course, is that wehave been dealing with the sex-abusescandal since the time [that] I became abishop until now. Those are some of theless than bright highlights, but they’re real.

“The more important thing is that thepeople of Evansville and the diocese herehave been wonderful and most welcomingin every way. It’s been a great, greatexperience for me.”

Q. You recently passed your50th anniversary of your ordination tothe priesthood. What are some of thefond memories you have of your28 years of life and ministry as a priestin the archdiocese?

A. “First off, I was prepared to be ateacher in high school. I was involved inCatholic schooling and education from1961 until 1980. That was the biggesthighlight. Of course, the challenge wasthat I was part of the brand newBishop Chatard High School in Indianapolis in 1961.

“Then I became the assistant principaland guidance director, and eventuallyprincipal from 1967-70. Then I was [thearchdiocesan school] superintendent for10 years. So Catholic education was mykey ministry.

“But I always had my foot in pastoralministry. I never lost my touch and love forbeing with people in parishes. In fact, inmy last years there, I was the pastor ofFrench Lick. I’d go down to Our Lady ofthe Springs [Parish] on Friday afternoonand come back on Sunday. After that, Ibecame rector of the cathedral.

“The experience was reallymultifaceted, but most joyful inevery way.”

Q. You grew up as a member ofSt. Bernard Parish in Frenchtown in thearchdiocese’s New Albany Deanery. Howdid your vocation to the priesthoodemerge in your life with your family,and in your life of faith in yourhome parish?

A. “Let me start with my family. In myfamily, I was the fourth of eight children. Ihad five sisters and two brothers.

VATICAN CITY (CNS)—Pope Benedict XVI gave acyber spark of life to a new Internet portal that gathers allVatican news into one multimedia website, officials from theVatican’s communications office announced.

With a click on a tablet device on the evening of June 28,Pope Benedict officially launched the aggregator of newscontent from the Vatican’s newspaper, radio, television andonline outlets, they said.

The site, www.news.va, was to be fully functional onJune 29, said Archbishop Claudio Celli, who heads thePontifical Council for Social Communications.

The date coincides with the feast of Sts. Peter and Pauland the 60th anniversary of Pope Benedict’s ordination tothe priesthood.

Archbishop Celli explained at a June 27 news conferencethat the site will streamline news from the Vatican newspaperL’Osservatore Romano, Vatican Radio, the Vatican televisionstation CTV, the Vatican Information Service (VIS), the Fidesmissionary news agency, the Vatican press office and themain Vatican website.

It will offer print, video and audio material in Italian andEnglish. New languages will be added gradually, beginningwith Spanish, followed probably by French and Portuguese,he said.

Thaddeus Jones, an official of the pontifical council whocoordinated the creation of the portal, said it will give all theinformation generated by the various information sources,and will highlight the latest news and most important itemsof the day.

It will feature a list of the 10 most-read stories and offer

links to many social network sites. Users will be able toshare content through Facebook, Twitter and e-mail,

Jones said.Gustavo Entrala, CEO of 101, the

Spanish digital media agency chosenfor the technical development of thenew site, said it was constructed ona high-end flexible platform that willallow millions of people to use it atthe same time.

The first big test, saidJesuit Father Federico Lombardi,head of the Vatican press office, willbe the World Youth Day event inMadrid on Aug. 16-21, which willbe attended by Pope Benedict and

which is expected to generate heavy traffic to the site.Costs of the development and maintenance of the site

will be borne exclusively through donations from privateorganizations and foundations, Archbishop Celli said. It willnot be supported at present or in the future by advertising orother commercial initiatives, he said.

While Pope Benedict may not appear to be a media-savvy pontiff, Archbishop Celli said, “in reality, withthis pope Vatican communications have made enormousstrides.”

The archbishop gave as an example the pope’s replywhen his advisers proposed an appearance on YouTube.According to the archbishop, the pope replied, “I want to bepresent wherever the people are found.” †

really. I grew up from age 13 to 25 atSaint Meinrad Seminary.

“When I had the choice to invite co-consecrators[for my episcopal ordination], I invited first myclassmate, who was Bishop Thomas O’Brien inPhoenix. And then I invited then-Bishop, nowArchbishop, Buechlein.

“It’s been a joy. He’s a great leader. He doesvery well in every way. I’m just so sorry that he’sstruggling now with some health issues. But he’sa great man of the Church. I’m proud to beone with him.”

Q. Bishop-designate Charles C. Thompson,who is your successor in Evansville, is now in thesame position that you were in 22 years ago.What advice have you given him thus far aboutadjusting to the life and ministry of a bishop?

A. “Bishop-elect Thompson and I have metseveral times. And my only advice to him at thispoint would be, number one, to be yourself. You’vegot to be who you are. You can’t put on airs. Youcan’t be phony. You’ve got to be yourself.

“And I can guarantee you, he will be. He is awonderful man. And he will have a great life here,and will be a great bishop as well.”

Q. What are your thoughts about thechallenges and opportunities that are currentlybefore the Church in the Diocese of Evansvilleand in Indiana?

A. “All of the dioceses are struggling with thesame main issue, and that is the shortage of priests.That’s facing the Church throughout [the U.S]. But,here in the Evansville Diocese, I have chosen not tobring in [foreign-born] priests because we are not amissionary territory.

“I’ve strived to get our people to recognize thatwe need to have our own indigenous priesthood.And we have the capability. But we need to draw

on it. We can’t simply expect other people to comein and help us out. That masks the issue.

“The key thing is that the development of thepriesthood comes from the family—around thedining room table, around the kitchen sink, in thefarm, wherever else they are.

“That’s where the priesthood has grown. And tobring someone in from some other place simplymasks that and makes people feel like nothing haschanged. Well, things have changed.

“The other side of this [issue] has to dowith the fact that many small parishes wereformed by reason of the fasting laws prior to theSecond Vatican Council, where people had to fastfrom midnight until Mass time without evenhaving water.

“And so we have a lot of … small countryparishes that have grown up, … but we don’t needthem in terms of numbers because a larger placecould work. But it’s very difficult to change that.”

Q. Do you have other plans for what you willdo after Bishop-designate Thompson isordained and installed as the new bishop ofEvansville?

A. “Number one, I’m a priest. Number two,I’m a bishop. And I plan on being a supply prieston weekends to help our parishes out. I’m going tolive here in the diocese.

“I plan on helping Bishop Charles anyway thatI can, except in the first year I plan on notaccepting any requests to do confirmations unlessthere’s some emergency. I think it’s important thathe have a chance to get around and help people,and they have a chance to meet him.

“Our folks here are familial. They like to knowthe guy at the top.”

The Church affirms the inherent dignity of human beingsBy Marcellino D’Ambrosio

The Catholic Church is the original Bible Church. Itsofficial teaching is no more than interpretation andapplication of God’s word. The lives of its saints are acommentary on Scripture and how to put it into practice.

So when we ask how the Church reaffirms the inherentdignity of human beings, we have to start with the Bible.

The various religions that existed in biblical timesrecognized gods who were made in man’s image andlikeness. Many had all of the foibles and vices played outin a soap opera: They played favorites, schemed to destroytheir enemies, cheated on their spouses and held grudges.

The Bible proclaims instead that human beings aremade in God’s image and likeness. We are called to be acommunity of persons who give themselves to each othereternally in love since God is indeed a God of love, asublime artist who creates the world in love as amasterpiece of beauty and nobility.

In creating man and woman in his image and likeness,God invites us to an intimate, personal relationship withhimself, and offers us the incredible privilege of being co-creators with him.

Sin gets in the way of all this, of course, defacing God’slikeness in us. Every sin is an offense against God preciselybecause it debases us as well as others.

But how does God respond to the outrage and uglinessof sin?

He does not draw back in revulsion, but instead drawsclose. He even assumed our human nature so that he couldcome to our rescue.

God never loses sight of the divine dignity that hidesbeneath the rags of our sin. He loved Matthew andZacchaeus, both tax collectors, back into their dignity. Hetook the time to listen to the Samaritan woman who hadfive husbands, offering her a new life.

The Second Vatican Council drew out the implicationsof this biblical witness. It based the right to freedom ofreligion on human dignity, teaching that:

• Morality can never just be imposed from without withrules and regulations, but must be internalized in asanctuary called conscience to be truly effective.

• All are called to the heights of holiness, not just aselect few, regardless of their state in life or occupation.

• If all people are created in God’s image and likeness,then all are equal in dignity, whether man or woman, adultor child, born or unborn, cleric or lay.

• We must work in society to bring about livingconditions that correspond to human dignity.

The teaching of the Church is beautifullyexpressed in councils, encyclicals, the Catechism of theCatholic Church and in its recognition of the lives ofits saints.

For example, the life of Blessed Teresa of Kolkata is amoving testimony to the dignity of the human person.

Mother Teresa recognized and honored the image of Godin people who were cast off by society and left to die inthe gutter in slums. She and her sisters loved theserejects, befriended them, and stood with them until theend of their lives.

Then there is Blessed Pope John Paul II, the apostle ofhuman dignity. His opposition to the death penalty on thegrounds of human dignity caused quite a stir. And whengravely wounded by a would-be assassin, Blessed JohnPaul did not simmer in resentment and outrage. As theGood Shepherd went out after the lost sheep, he went tothe prison cell of his attacker, looked him in the eye andspoke to him of his forgiveness and God’s love.

In raising these two witnesses and many others to thedignity of the altar, the Church is reaffirming the dignityof every single human person without exception.

The favored child of a wealthy andpowerful family abruptly abandons his

enthusiastic pursuit of fame and pleasurefor a life of radical service to the poor.

Today, such a change of direction wouldlikely generate family distress and mediadiagnoses of mental illness—and even amade-for-TV movie script.

When Francesco Bernardone did it inhis 12th-century hometown of Assisi, thereaction wasn’t much different. His fatherwas outraged, and many people thoughtyoung Francis was insane.

Happily, this dramatic turnaroundmarked not a mental breakdown, but a deepconversion to Christ and his Gospel.

St. Francis of Assisi understood thatthe world is not a mere storehouse ofpossible possessions, but a transformativesacrament of God’s loving presence. Herecognized how easy it is for possessionsto obscure the face of Christ in our sistersand brothers.

Most of us are not called to the kind ofradical poverty and simplicity thatSt. Francis famously embraced. At thesame time, all of us need to attend to thewisdom embodied in his choice.

No one living in today’s media-saturatedworld can fail to be influenced by the

incessant call to own more stuff, toupgrade. Even so, the spiritual value ofsimplicity and the hollow falsehood ofconsumerism are not new to Christians.The biblical tradition is filled with the sameinsight, repeated endlessly. Only Godfulfills our longings. Only God, uniquelyand unfailingly present in Christ and hisdisciples, satisfies us and fulfillsour aspirations.

Happiness and meaning are found, notin the possession and enjoyment of eventhe finest and most beautiful things, but inloving relationships.

Resisting the gravitational pull ofconsumerism is hard to do. Its persuasiveappeal is both relentless and attractive.And, as St. Francis knew, the things of theworld can powerfully communicateGod’s beauty and love.

How can we resist?The late Franciscan Sister Jose Hobday

had an elegantly simple strategy. Aninternationally renowned writer andretreat leader who was 80 when she died in2009, Sister Jose was asked once how wemight simplify our lives in the face ofsuch pressures.

St. Francis of Assisi is portrayed in a stained-glass window. The 12th-centuryItalian saint understood well that happinessis found in relationships, not in the accumulation of possessions.

Live more simply for the sake of discipleship in Jesus Christ“I try to have only one of whatever I

need,” she said. “And every time I buysomething, I give something away.”

If she couldn’t find someone to takethe well-worn dress or the serviceablepair of shoes or the marked-up book, shewould, regretfully but resolutely, throwit away.

She knew, like her spiritual father,Francis, that things themselves weren’tthe problem—reliance on them was.

The choice to live more simply makesus vulnerable. It may not be the radicalsimplicity of St. Francis or even themoderate but energetic simplicity ofSister Jose, but living more simply forthe sake of discipleship in Christ canbe scary.

The good news is that such vulnerability opens the door to deeperreliance on Jesus, and to greaterfreedom to share the Good News ofhis boundless love.

St. Anthony Zaccaria, whose feast is onJuly 5, is not one of the best-known saints,

but he was animportant influence onthe Church in the16th century. That wasa time when theChurch badly neededreform. Indeed, it wasthe century of theProtestant Reformationthen the reforming

Council of Trent.Anthony Zaccaria, a medical doctor

who became a priest, founded theBarnabites with the expressed purpose ofreforming both the decadent society of hisday and the Church, beginning with theclergy and religious. The congregation’spatron is St. Paul, and it is named after hiscompanion.

Today, there are about 500 members ofthe congregation in 17 countries fromAfghanistan to Zaire, including here in theUnited States. The Barnabites havemissions in the Amazon, Rwanda,Tanzania and Zaire, with hospitals, clinics,schools and radio stations.

St. Anthony is known for his preaching,both in churches and on street corners. Heencouraged frequent Communion—rare atthe time—the Forty Hours devotion andthe ringing of church bells at 3 p.m. onFridays. He died in 1539 at age 36.

In one of his sermons to members ofthe society that he founded, Anthonyacknowledged the opposition theyreceived from those who didn’tappreciate their efforts at reformation,which included two official religiousinvestigations.

However, he said, “We should loveand feel compassion for those whooppose us, rather than abhor and despisethem, since they harm themselves and dous good, and adorn us with crowns ofeverlasting glory while they incite God’sanger against themselves.”

He encouraged his brothers to emulatetheir patron, St. Paul, and pray for thosewho opposed them and thus overcome evilwith goodness. “We should heap goodworks like red-hot coals of burning loveupon their heads, as our Apostle urges usto do, so that when they become aware ofour tolerance and gentleness they may

We often think about the kingdom ofGod as some far-off place that we will

get to experience asour eternal rewardwhen our time hereon Earth ends.

I’d like to suggestthat God’s kingdomis here and now, andcan be witnessedand experiencedwhen our hearts areopen enough. I had

one of these experiences just this week.June 20 was “World Refugee Day.”

Our amazing and dedicatedCatholic Charities Refugee Resettlementstaff, and their volunteer high school andcollege-age refugee ambassadors, puttogether a wonderful dinner andcelebration to mark this occasion.This first-ever event hosted at theArchbishop Edward T. O’MearaCatholic Center in Indianapolis wasattended by about 250 people.

As I looked around the room, Ibegan to experience an awareness thatthis group gathered together in one placefor a couple of hours was a greatrepresentation of the kingdom of God.

Among our guests were men, womenand children from Iraq, Sudan, Ethiopia,Kenya, Burma, Eritrea and othercountries that I had never even heard ofnor could even pronounce.

I began to consider the Scripture thattells us that God created human beingsin God’s own image and likeness.

Wow, is God diverse!In our small representation of the

world that evening, we had skin colorsof nearly every shade, facial features ofmany shapes and sizes, straight hair,curly hair, no hair at all and dozens oflanguages being spoken—just to name afew of the differences that could be seenand heard.

The cultural, religious and lifestyledifferences would have been toonumerous to count. And all of thesedifferences are a reflection of the Godwho created each of us.

Father Greg Boyle, the Jesuit priestwho works with gang members inLos Angeles, often uses the expression,“our parishes that are hermitically sealed”to describe the lack of diversity in the vastmajority of our Catholic parishes.

This lack of diversity can lead manyof us to the notion that we are like mostof the rest of the world in terms of howwe look and how we live in the world.This can also lead us to have a limitednotion of God, whose diversity andvastness has no end.

Among the very few direct commandsthat Jesus gave us was to “welcome thestranger” (Mt 25:35). Jesus said thatwhen we do this, we welcome him. Ourparishes, homes, workplaces and ourcountry are great places to live out thiscommand.

Catholic Charities Indianapolis hasbeen welcoming Jesus in strangers fromall over the world in central Indiana fornearly 30 years. Thanks to many of you,these people are welcomed and helped tomake a life where they can fully expressall that God has created them to be.

Most of us had ancestors who made asimilar journey to this great countrywhere we have the profound privilege ofoutwardly expressing our gratitudeto God.

He reminded his brothers that God hadchosen them out of the world “to servehim and thus to advance in goodness andto bear the greatest possible fruit of lovein patience.”

Part of their calling, he said, was tofollow, “admittedly from afar,” thefootsteps of the Apostles and otherfollowers of Christ. That meant, he said,being willing to share in their sufferingsas well.

As St. Paul sometimes referred to ourlives as a race, Anthony admonished hisbrothers to keep running steadily in therace they started, “while keeping our eyesfixed on Jesus, who leads us in our faithand brings it to perfection,” quoting theLetter to the Hebrews (Heb 12:2).

Since they chose such a great Apostleas St. Paul as their guide and father, andclaim to follow him, Anthony said, “Weshould try to put his teaching and exampleinto practice in our lives. Such a leadershould not be served by faint-heartedtroops, nor should such a parent find hissons unworthy of him.” †

A few days ago, we had to make a quickrun to the grocery store for some key dinner

ingredients.Maybe they have

completely shifted into“summer mode,” butmy son and daughter,ages 6 and 3, werehooting and holleringthroughout the storelike savages.

They played catchwith an apple in the

produce section then attempted a swordfight with stalks of celery. I won’t evenmention the incident in the cereal aisle.

Because the kids were in especially rareform, I tried to make the trip as quick aspossible. But their antics continued, myembarrassment grew and enough wasenough.

“Stop it, kids!” I demanded. “They willthink we’re a bunch of heathens.”

An hour later at home, the phone rangand my 6-year-old son, Henry, answered itsince I was preoccupied with anoverflowing pot on the stove. I heard himtell the neighbor, “She can’t come to thephone right now because she’s busyburning dinner.”

I shook my head and said, “Oh, whatthat neighbor must think.”

My son is a bit more observant than Ihad considered, and innocently posed this

question. “Mom, why do you care so muchabout what other people think?” he asked.

His question caught me off guard. He’sright. Too often, I’m overly concerned withwhat other people think. I am conscientiousabout the glances from passers-by at thegrocery store. I’m sensitive to fleetingcomments made by my peers and, moreoften than I’d like to admit, I look for theiraffirmations to becontent.

Instead of being soconcerned about whatothers think, I need toconsider what mattersmost—What does Godthink? And is the wayI’m living making Godhappy?

In this world, we willalways have fans, and wewill always have critics.Some people will like us,and some will not. But what is mostimportant is whether God likes the choicesthat we’re making. We must look to Godinstead of to those around us.

At the end of the day, it’s between me andGod. When I look at myself in the mirror, Idon’t see the many people I was hoping toimpress or make an impact on during theday. It’s only me. I must remember that I amaccountable by God’s standards instead of bythe world’s standards.

Do your best to be right with God each dayI don’t think God consults our neighbors

for references when we try to get intoheaven. He won’t be swayed by fancyclothes or the amount of square footage inour houses.

In the end, he will see us as we truly are.So we shouldn’t consider others as ourjudges. And we should never considerourselves as the judges of others, either.

There’s a beautifulquote from a devotionaltitled God Calling,which says,“Never judge. Theheart of man is sodelicate, so complex,only its maker canknow it. Each heart isso different, actuatedby different motives,controlled by differentcircumstances,influenced by

different sufferings.”So the next time I catch myself worrying

about what others think or how they mightsee me, I will return to my son’s question inmy mind. I realize that I cannot control whatothers think of me, but I can do my best tobe right with God.

Instead of being soconcerned about whatothers think, I need toconsider what mattersmost—What does Godthink? And is the wayI’m living making Godhappy?

Those who have followed my“Faithful Lines” column might recall the

years when my sister,Beverley, who is fromBelleville, Ill., and Iwere deeply involvedwith caregiving forelderly loved ones.

If so, those readersmight also rememberthe agonizingproblems thatdeveloped when our

mother was badly abused while living in ahometown nursing home.

Happily, we found help for Mom in achurch-run nursing home that followedChristian rules of conduct and care. ACatholic nun recommended the facility.We knew we had chosen the right placewhen we took Mom there, and the staffmembers greeted and hugged Mom.

Some readers also might recall that atthe same time, my husband and I, whowere caring for his mother in our home,had to find a nursing home in Indianapolisfor her because I could not be in two states

at the same time and Paul had to work.The bottom line was that for a long

time, Bev and I became advocates for theelderly, even speaking to nursing homestaff members.

In July, I will turn 75 and my sister issix years younger. I’m the elder amongfour siblings. So I naturally wonder aboutthe future for us and for our spouses.

Then I came upon a book that changedmy perspective, and would have been aGodsend for Bev and me during ourcaregiving years.

The Book of Zechariah provides thisweekend’s first biblical reading.

Zechariah was ofthe priestly caste andwas born in Babylonduring the time whenmany Jews were inforced exile in theBabylonian capital.When the exileended, due topolitical changes andPersia’s subjugation

of Babylonia, he went to the Holy Landwith his grandfather.

It might be assumed that he waseither a youth or young adult when hemade this trip because few grandparentsat the time lived long enough to seetheir grandchildren reach middle age.

Whatever his age, unless he was aninfant too young to notice, and this isunlikely, he would have seen, andprobably was part of, the enthusiasm ofthe people as they departed from thedespised Babylon and began theirjourney home.

Finally in the Holy Land, he devotedhimself to the care and study of theScriptures. Obviously, he saw himself,and was regarded by others, as aprophet. He met a violent death,apparently murdered in the templeprecincts.

This weekend’s reading captures thisgreat joy and enthusiasm of the exiles asthey came upon their homeland. It was aholy joy based on the thought that Godhad rescued them.

God will continue to protect them.One day, God will send a messiah whowill enter the holy city of Jerusalemwith great humility seated on a donkey.

This image was to be a part of theevent of Palm Sunday, actually to occurmany centuries later when Jesus enteredJerusalem.

St. Paul’s Epistle to the Romansprovides the second reading.

In it, Paul repeats the theme so oftengiven in his writings. Christians not onlyfollow Christ, or join Christ in their ownwalks through life. The Lord becomes apart of them, and they become a part of

Jesus. Christian discipleship forges thisstrong of a bond.

The last reading is fromSt. Matthew’s Gospel.

Jesus continually encountered personsthat were very well educated in theScriptures, but often they opposed theLord. It was a problem. In the minds ofmany people at the time, they wereregarded as the wisest in the society.

Jesus had to insist that the wisest inpopular consensus were not the wisestafter all. By contrast, the Lord said thathumble and innocent children often canbetter see profound truths.

As to the critics, Jesus does not leavethem to drown in the sea of their ownpride. Rather, the Lord reaches out tothem. The lesson is strong. God offerssalvation even to those who reject it orsee no need for it, but they still mustrespond to this offer.

ReflectionThe Gospel this weekend presents

facts that are indispensable to Christiandoctrine and to achieving Christianholiness.

None of us, in the last analysis, isthat insightful. Original Sin has robbedus of good vision. We all see a world,but it is a distorted and unclear image.We are myopic, thinking only ofourselves.

To compound it all, we deny, or areoblivious to, our inadequacy. Weexaggerate ourselves, making ourselvesgreater than we are.

We deceive ourselves. We trickourselves into thinking that we can findthe way on our own. We cannot. OnlyGod can show us the way.

Mercifully, happily for us, God showsus the way in Jesus. Jesus not only leadsus, but also gives us divine life itself. Astrue believers, we live in Jesus and theLord lives in us.

The key to attaining this relationshipis our humility, our trust in God.

We do not have to yearn for Godwithout relief. God awaits our call. Heloves us with an everlasting, perfectlove. He will come to us. Thus, withZechariah, we can rejoice that the Lordcomes to us. †

My Journey to God

Death is a given.Such a fleeting thought when lifethrives, then reality.

Death coming in youthcauses us to question why,hard to accept, understand.

Eternal life with Godnot measured by hours or daysbut everlasting.

Death can be sudden.A life so dear is takenfrom us and this Earth.

Let us rememberGod is good, merciful, love.He wants us happy.

Sometimes death is slowdelivering pain, sorrow andfeelings of despair.

Positive Thoughts of Death

QI have an 8-year-old autistic grandson.My daughter can’t get any help about

what to do about hisfirst Communion.

Our parish religiouseducation director doesn’tknow what to do to preparehim to receive thesacrament.

Today, hisclassmates made theirfirst Communion. Mydaughter didn’t go to

church. She couldn’t take it. I am heartbroken.What is the Catholic answer?

AI understand why you are heartbroken, butthere’s no need to give up hope. God is

good to all his people and especially concernedfor his handicapped children.

The parish priest has the obligation to makesure that children who present themselves forfirst Communion “are properly prepared, able todistinguish the Body of Christ from ordinaryfood and able to receive Communion withreverence.”

Moreover, the child should make hisfirst confession before his first Communion.(See Canons #913-#914.)

Ultimately, it will be up to the parish priestto determine whether the child is ready and ableto receive holy Communion while bearing inmind what is stipulated in canon law.

Parents should aid the parish priest in thisdetermination since they are the primaryeducators of their children and know just howmuch the child is able to understand.

In some cases, it would be fitting to allow anautistic child to receive holy Communion.

In other cases, it might not be appropriate, alldepending on whether the child is a high-,medium- or low-functioning autistic person.

You may want to inform yourself and yourparish about the marvelous catecheticalassistance offered by the SPRED program, theSpecial Religious Development ministry of theArchdiocese of Indianapolis that has beenassisting families such as yours for many years.

Some people have argued that low-functioning autistic children and low-functioning Down syndrome children donot need the grace of the holy Eucharistbecause they are not responsible for themorality of their actions and thereforesubjectively cannot sin.

Still, special children in these situations dohave feelings. They welcome love andacceptance just as they feel hurt by isolation andexclusion. This alone could be a compellingreason to admit such special children of God to

the holy Eucharist.

QMy question is about suicide. I wouldnever consider taking my own life, but

what if some people just can’t believe thatsuicide is punishable with eternal hell?

Some problems just don’t seem to besolvable by a person any other way than bytaking his or her life.

People in this situation don’t even knowthey have a severe form of depression andthey kill themselves.

AThe Catechism of the Catholic Churchprovides some answers—clear, sobering

and yet hopeful—to your question.“We are stewards, not owners, of the life

God has entrusted to us. It is not ours todispose of …

“Suicide is contrary to love for theliving God.

“If suicide is committed with the intentionof setting an example, especially to theyoung, it also takes on the gravity of scandal.Voluntary cooperation in suicide is contraryto the moral law.

“Grave psychological disturbances,anguish, or grave fear of hardship, sufferingor torture can diminish the responsibility ofthe one committing suicide.

“We should not despair of the eternalsalvation of persons who have taken theirown lives. By ways known to him alone, Godcan provide the opportunity for salutaryrepentance. The Church prays for personswho have taken their own lives” (#2280-#2283).

Whether an individual accepts that suicideis intrinsically evil and deserving of hell isbeside the point. (See Veritatis Splendor #80and Gaudium et Spes #27.)

An individual’s conscience is neitherinfallible nor supreme in determining theobjective morality of a human act.

However, his or her subjective culpabilityis a different question, and only God canjudge a person because only God can trulyknow his or her intentions.

That’s why we offer such unfortunatepeople the pastoral care of the Church with aproper funeral, and we remember to pray fortheir souls.

It is true that some problems are very, verydifficult, but God’s grace is always sufficient.I admit, at times, that it takes a lot of faith toaccept this.

Certain ailments, such as hypoglycemia ordepression, can contribute to a person’stendency toward suicide, thus making it allthe more important that we offer our serviceto all those around us in need. †

A mom with two kids is now likely to be counted among the homelessWASHINGTON (CNS)—Out

of work and living in a shelter,Jasmine, asingle mother,has one thingon hermind—reuniting herfamily.

Her son,Emanuel, 3, is

staying with Jasmine—whoasked that her last name not beused—at the Ozanam FamilyShelter in Edison, N.J., run byCatholic Charities of the Dioceseof Metuchen. But her 5-year-olddaughter, Monet, is not. She is withher grandmother, the mother ofJasmine’s former boyfriend.

“It’s difficult because she wantsto see him all the time and hewants to see her,” Jasmine saidabout her children. “It’s difficult tofind transportation to get up thereor so she can get here.”

Jasmine turned to the shelterin mid-June after she and herboyfriend decided it was time togo their separate ways. ForJasmine, Emanuel and Monet,finding even a modest apartmentin northern New Jersey is outof the question. Rent for a one-bedroom apartmenttypically runs $900 a month. Atwo-bedroom place is $1,500.

“Two kids and an adult can’tlive in a one-bedroom apartment,”Jasmine said. “It’s either live onthe streets or come to a shelter.”

Jasmine’s predicamentillustrates a growing trend acrossthe country: Families are making

up a growing proportion ofhomeless people. Shelter providerstold Catholic News Service they areseeing more families who havebeen forced to abandon stableliving arrangements, and thrust intothe uncertainty of life on the streets.

Wesley R. Moore, divisiondirector for housing and socialconcerns for Catholic Charities inMetuchen, told CNS that manyparents landing in the OzanamFamily Shelter—single ormarried—are facing unemploymentor underemployment, making itdifficult for them to makeends meet.

The 2010 Annual HomelessAssessment Report by theDepartment of Housing andUrban Development found thatsince 2007, the number of people infamilies who are homeless hasincreased by 19.8 percent. Basedon reports from shelter providersnationwide, HUD estimates thatpeople in families now make up35.6 percent of the country’shomeless population on any givennight. That compares with29.8 percent in 2007.

Homelessness amongindividuals declined 6.4 percentduring the same period.

Overall, HUD estimated thatnearly 1,593,150 people werehomeless in 2009-10, with567,334 from families. Thatcompares with an estimate of1,581,595 homeless people in2006-07, with 473,541 fromfamilies.

Neil Donovan, executive directorof the National Coalition for the

Homeless, said his organizationbelieves that the federalgovernment’s count may be off byas much as 20 percent because notall shelters report their statistics onhomelessness every year, and thatpeople who stay out of shelters arenot part of any count. He urgedHUD and the U.S. Census Bureauto do a better job of identifyingwho is homeless and why they arehomeless so that the reasonspeople are without a home can bebetter addressed.

HUD’s data are not meant todownplay the size of thetraditional homelesspopulation—men. In fact, 62percent of all sheltered homelesspeople in 2010 were male. Thelargest group—37 percent—weremen 31 to 50 years old.

HUD found, however, that agrowing number of single menwere homeless because of a lostjob than because of alcohol ordrug abuse.

The typical homeless family,HUD reported, is a mother withtwo children. The report also citeda growing number of two-parentfamilies experiencinghomelessness as victims of layoffsand real estate foreclosures.

Jean Beil, senior vice presidentof programs and services atCatholic Charities USA, sees themovement of people from homeownership into the rental marketas a primary reason for theincrease in homelessness amongfamilies. With more peopleseeking to rent, prices moveupward, forcing some at the low

foreclosure crisis,” she said.The new wave of homelessness

has prompted shelter providers todevelop new programs to movefamilies into more stableenvironments. Transitional housingprograms that help families returnto independence are developingrapidly, but the need still exceedsthe number of slots available acrossthe country.

At shelters, case managersincreasingly are focusing onhelping residents improve skills inresume writing, interviewingtechniques and networking.

“Ultimately, we want the clientsto be self-reliant,” explainedLindsay Cuomo, case manager atthe Ozanam Family Shelter. “Wetry to point them in the rightdirection. We want them to securethese things on their own.” †

Karen Wallensak, executivedirector of the Catholic CharitiesHousing Resource Center in theArchdiocese of St. Louis, said heragency has seen homelessness onthe rise in suburban and ruralareas, especially among two-parent families.

“This is due primarily becauseof the economic crisis and the
